Let P be a set of n points in the plane. A geometric proximity graph on P is a graph where two points are connected by a straight-line segment if they satisfy some prescribed proximity rule. We consider four classes of higher order proximity graphs, namely, the k-nearest neighbor graph, the k-relative neighborhood graph, the k-Gabriel graph and the k-Delaunay graph. For k=0 (k=1 in the case of the k-nearest neighbor graph) these graphs are plane, but for higher values of k in general they contain crossings. In this paper, we provide lower and upper bounds on their minimum and maximum number of crossings. We give general bounds and we also study particular cases that are especially interesting from the viewpoint of applications. These cases include the 1-Delaunay graph and the k-nearest neighbor graph for small values of k.  相似文献

We examine a recolouring scheme ostensibly used to assist in classifying geographic data. Given a drawing of a graph with bi-chromatic points, where the points are the vertices of the graph, a point can be recoloured if it is surrounded by neighbours of the opposite colour. The notion of surrounded is defined as a contiguous subset of neighbours that span an angle greater than 180 degrees. The recolouring of surrounded points continues in sequence, in no particular order, until no point remains surrounded. We show that for some classes of graphs the process terminates in a polynomial number of steps. On the other hand, there are classes of graphs with infinite recolouring sequences.  相似文献

We study the existence of edges having few crossings with the other edges in drawings of the complete graph (more precisely, in simple topological complete graphs). A topological graphT=(V,E) is a graph drawn in the plane with vertices represented by distinct points and edges represented by Jordan curves connecting the corresponding pairs of points (vertices), passing through no other vertices, and having the property that any intersection point of two edges is either a common end-point or a point where the two edges properly cross. A topological graph is simple if any two edges meet in at most one common point.Let h=h(n) be the smallest integer such that every simple topological complete graph on n vertices contains an edge crossing at most h other edges. We show that Ω(n3/2)≤h(n)≤O(n2/log1/4n). We also show that the analogous function on other surfaces (torus, Klein bottle) grows as cn2.  相似文献

A rectilinear drawing of a graph is one where each edge is drawn as a straight-line segment, and the rectilinear crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings over all rectilinear drawings. We describe, for every integer k ≥ 4, a class of graphs of crossing number k, but unbounded rectilinear crossing number. This is best possible since the rectilinear crossing number is equal to the crossing number whenever the latter is at most 3. Further, if we consider drawings where each edge is drawn as a polygonal line segment with at most one break point, then the resulting crossing number is at most quadratic in the regular crossing number. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Let Qn denote the n-dimensional hypercube. In this paper we derive upper and lower bounds for the crossing number v(Qn), i.e., the minimum number of edge-crossings in any planar drawing of Qn. The upper bound is close to a result conjectured by Eggleton and Guy and the lower bound is a significant improvement over what was previously known. Let N = 2n be the number of vertices of Qn. We show that v(Qn) < 1/6N2. For the lower bound we prove that v(Qn) = Ω(N(lg N)c lg lg N), where c > 0 is a constant and lg is the logarithm base 2. The best lower bound using standard arguments is v(Qn) = Ω(N(lg N)2). The lower bound is obtained by constructing a large family of homeomorphs of a subcube with the property that no given pair of edges can appear in more than a constant number of the homeomorphs.  相似文献

A clique-transversal set D of a graph G is a set of vertices of G such that D meets all cliques of G.The clique-transversal number,denoted Tc(G),is the minimum cardinality of a clique- transversal set in G.In this paper we present the bounds on the clique-transversal number for regular graphs and characterize the extremal graphs achieving the lower bound.Also,we give the sharp bounds on the clique-transversal number for claw-free cubic graphs and we characterize the extremal graphs achieving the lower bound.  相似文献

The forcing number of a perfect matching M of a graph G is the cardinality of the smallest subset of M that is contained in no other perfect matching of G. In this paper, we demonstrate several techniques to produce upper bounds on the forcing number of bipartite graphs. We present a simple method of showing that the maximum forcing number on the 2m×2n rectangle is mn, and show that the maximum forcing number on the 2m×2n torus is also mn. Further, we investigate the lower bounds on the forcing number and determine the conditions under which a previously formulated lower bound is sharp; we provide an example of a family of graphs for which it is arbitrarily weak.  相似文献

We study the stopping times of gossip algorithms for network coding. We analyze algebraic gossip (i.e., random linear coding) and consider three gossip algorithms for information spreading: Pull, Push, and Exchange. The stopping time of algebraic gossip is known to be linear for the complete graph, but the question of determining a tight upper bound or lower bounds for general graphs is still open. We take a major step in solving this question, and prove that algebraic gossip on any graph of size n is On) where Δ is the maximum degree of the graph. This leads to a tight bound of for bounded degree graphs and an upper bound of O(n2) for general graphs. We show that the latter bound is tight by providing an example of a graph with a stopping time of . Our proofs use a novel method that relies on Jackson's queuing theorem to analyze the stopping time of network coding; this technique is likely to become useful for future research. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A graph H is called a supersubdivison of a graph G if H is obtained from G by replacing every edge uv of G by a complete bipartite graph K2,m (m may vary for each edge) by identifying u and v with the two vertices in K2,m that form one of the two partite sets. We denote the set of all such supersubdivision graphs by SS(G). Then, we prove the following results.
1. Each non-trivial connected graph G and each supersubdivision graph HSS(G) admits an α-valuation. Consequently, due to the results of Rosa (in: Theory of Graphs, International Symposium, Rome, July 1966, Gordon and Breach, New York, Dunod, Paris, 1967, p. 349) and El-Zanati and Vanden Eynden (J. Combin. Designs 4 (1996) 51), it follows that complete graphs K2cq+1 and complete bipartite graphs Kmq,nq can be decomposed into edge disjoined copies of HSS(G), for all positive integers m,n and c, where q=|E(H)|.
2. Each connected graph G and each supersubdivision graph in SS(G) is strongly n-elegant, where n=|V(G)| and felicitous.
3. Each supersubdivision graph in EASS(G), the set of all even arbitrary supersubdivision graphs of any graph G, is cordial.

In this paper, we study bounds on the number of edges required to be added to G to obtain 2-vertex or 2-edge connected plane geometric graphs. In particular, we show that for G to become 2-edge connected, additional edges are required in some cases and that additional edges are always sufficient.
