A monolayer of amphiphilic molecules on water surface (Langmuir monolayer) at the so-called “solid” phase is studied using Monte Carlo simulations. Each molecule is considered to be a rigid rod, one end (the hydrophilic “head”) of which is assumed to be fixed on a two-dimensional lattice, while the other end (the hydrophobic “tail”) interacts with its nearest and next-nearest neighbours through the Lennard-Jones potential. With increase in temperature, the system undergoes a first-order transition from a low-tilt to a high-tilt phase. With increase in tail-length, the two-phase coexistence region decreases and the transition becomes sharper.  相似文献

Polystyrene spheres of the same size (10–100μm) dispersed in ferrofluid produce voids, which have been denoted magnetic holes. A two-dimensional system of interacting magnetic holes confined between two glass plates and subject to rotating magnetic fields in the sample plane are studied in a light microscope. For low frequencies of the field rotation, the holes form pairs, which arrange themselves in a regular triangular lattice when stabilized with a weak constant field normal to the sample plane. By increasing the frequency of the rotating field, we observe that above a critical frequency, the steady forward rotation of the pairs is interrupted by backward rotations in short time intervals. Because the intervals of backward rotation occur at different times for each individual pair, disorder is introduced in the system, and the triangular lattice of pairs “melts” and forms a liquid-like structure at high rotation frequencies of the field. This “melting” transition is observed both directly and in light scattering experiments using a laser.  相似文献

We calculate the potential between “quarks” which are in the adjoint representation of SU(2) color in the three-dimensional lattice theory. We work in the scaling region of the theory and at large quark separations R. We also calculate the masses MQg of color-singlet bound states formed by coupling an adjoint quark to adjoint glue (“gluelumps”). Good scaling behavior is found for the masses of both magnetic (angular momentum J = 0) and electric (J = 1) gluelumps, and the magnetic gluelump is found to be the lowest-lying state. It is naively expected that the potential for adjoint quarks should saturate above a separation Rscr where it becomes energetically favorable to produce a pair of gluelumps. We obtain a good estimate of the naive screening distance Rscr. However we find little evidence of saturation in the potential out to separations R of about 1.5Rscr.  相似文献

Using an atomistic shell model we study the temperature dependence of the ferroelectric properties of BaTiO3 under biaxial compressive strain applicable to growth on perovskites substrate. Molecular dynamics simulations show a “rcp” sequence of phase transitions when temperature is increased, and the absence of an “ac phase”. The first-order paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition presents in bulk changes to a second-order one as a consequence of the in-plane constraint imposed by the mechanical boundary conditions. From the tetragonal ferroelectric c phase, the transition takes place in a finite range of temperature where the lattice parameter normal to the plane keeps approximately constant until Tc is reached. Analysis of the local polarization behavior reveals an order–disorder dynamics as the dominant mechanism of the transition.  相似文献

We consider theoretically a phase-locking transition in Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice in the regime where system can realized as a three-dimensional Josephson junction array. The coherence between adjacent Bose condensates (trapped in the valleys of the periodic potential) caused by the Josephson tunneling can lead to a phase transition with a global phase coherence at certain critical temperature. Using a model Hamiltonian of Josephson weakly coupled Bose condensates we calculate the critical temperature for the three-dimensional system placed in a simple cubic lattice and discuss the result in the context of system parameters and possible experiments.  相似文献

In this paper we construct a scenario for the QCD transition from the hadron phase to the quark/gluon phase using physical models for these phases. The hadron phase is modeled by a spectrum of hadrons with masses which drop (with a common scaling factor) towards zero at chiral symmetry restoration. The number of hadronic effective degrees of freedom is limited by the number of microscopic degrees of freedom in the quark/gluon phase. This limitation can be imposed either by fiat or through the introduction of a temperature-dependent excluded volume. Given that the number of degrees of freedom in hadrons and in quarks and gluons are roughly equal, the QCD phase transition is inhibited by the bag constant. The only phase transition seen in lattice-gauge calculations, once low-mass quarks are included, is the restoration of chiral symmetry which occurs at the relatively low temperature of ˜ 150 MeV. At present, lattice gauge calculations do not have the resolution to determine the properties of the higher hadronic states accurately. They do, however, demonstrate that chiral restoration takes place in the (ρ. a1), ( +)), ( −)) and (π, σ) systems by yielding “screening masses” for chiral partners which are distinct for T < T xSR and identical for T>T xSR. Further, within numerical accuracy, these “screening masses” are consistent with pure thermal energies and show no evidence of remaining bare masses once chiral symmetry is restored. These, and other lattice-gauge results, will be discussed in the light of our scenario. We shall also consider the consequences of our picture for relativistic heavy-ion experiments.  相似文献

We show that, independently of the boundary conditions, the two phases of the 4-dimensional compact U(1) lattice gauge theory can be characterized by the presence or absence of an “infinite” current network, with an appropriate definition of “infinite” network takes values 0 or 1 in the cold and hot phase, respectively. It thus constitutes a very efficient order parameter, which allows one to determine the transition region at low computational cost. In addition, for open and fixed boundary conditions we address the question of the impact of inhomogeneities and give examples of the reappearance of an energy gap already at moderate lattice sizes.  相似文献

A simple first-order Kikuchi approximation is studied for the short-range (nearest-neighbour) version of the van Hemmen mean-field model originally proposed for spin-glasses. Although the approximation is very similar to the mean-field treatment, the phase diagrams from the two methods are drastically different. Previously reported results are reviewed and extended. The “reentrant” ferromagnetic to “spin-glass” transition found in zero magnetic field persists in small fields. The equilibrium magnetization displays a maximum as a function of temperature in the reentrance region. The characteristic S-shape of the magnetization versus field in the “spin-glass” region and magnetic hysteresis are observed. In addition, some exact results concerning the problem of the lower critical dimension of the short-range model are derived.  相似文献

We perform simulations of an effective theory of SU(2) Wilson lines in three dimensions. Our action includes a kinetic term, the one-loop perturbative potential for the Wilson line, a non-perturbative “fuzzy-bag” contribution and spatial gauge fields. We determine the phase diagram of the theory and confirm that, at moderately weak coupling, the non-perturbative term leads to eigenvalue repulsion in a finite region above the deconfining phase transition.  相似文献

We show that the zero-temperature physics of planar Josephson junction arrays in the self-dual approximation is governed by an Abelian gauge theory with a periodic mixed Chern-Simons term describing the charge-vortex coupling. The periodicity requires the existence of (Euclidean) topological excitations which determine the quantum phase structure of the model. The electric-magnetic duality leads to a quantum phase transition between a superconductor and a superinsulator at the self-dual point. We also discuss in this framework the recently proposed quantum Hall phases for charges and vortices in presence of external offset charges and magnetic fluxes: we show how the periodicity of the charge-vortex coupling can lead to transitions to anyon superconductivity phases. We finally generalize our results to three dimensions, where the relevant gauge theory is the so-called BF system with an antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond gauge field.  相似文献

A system of two parallel Josephson junction arrays coupled by interlayer capacitances is considered in the situation where one layer is in the vortex-dominated and the other in the charge-dominated regime. This system shows a symmetry (duality) of the relevant degrees of freedom, i.e. the vortices in one layer and the charges in the other. The charges feel the magnetic field created by vortices, and, vice versa, the vortices feel a gauge field created by charges. For long-range interaction of the charges the system exhibits two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions, one for vortices and another one for charges. The interlayer capacitance suppresses the temperature of vortex-unbinding transition. It further replaces the charge-unbinding transition by a crossover, which is smeared already for weak interlayer coupling.  相似文献

A series of new compounds Ba4(Pb1−xBix)3O10 with 0≤x<0.3 has been prepared and characterized by X-ray and electron diffraction. The d.c. resistivity vs. temperature data for different x values are presented and structural features are compared to those of the superconducting phase Ba(Pb1−xBix)O3. The “mother-compound” Ba4Pb3O10 is tetragonal, with lattice constants A=0.4280(1) and C=3.017(1) nm. Its structure can be regarded as a stacking of Ba(PbBi)O3 triple-layers, separated by single BaO layers. Electron diffraction reveals the presence of a weak superstructure with the a-axis related to that of the perovskite by a=√2ap. Frequent intergrowth of this phase with the perovskite structure is observed. The conductivity of the samples Ba4Pb3O10 is nearly independent of temperature, while Bi-doped samples exhibit semiconductor-like behaviour at low temperature. No superconducting transition is observed down to 2K.  相似文献

Different anomalies in the Hall effect, electrical resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility of simple Co-P amorphous alloys have been observed. We show that the anomalies detected are due to a transition from “para” to “ferromagnetic” order. The transition, which is not well defined, suggests a large compositional inhomogeneity in the samples with high content in P.  相似文献

Single-layer washer-type high-Tc YBa2Cu3O7−x rf SQUIDs with grain-boundary Josephson junctions, as well as low-Tc Nb rf SQUIDs with Nb–Al2O3–Nb tunnel junctions, have been investigated in finite magnetic fields. It was shown experimentally that the suppression of the critical current of the Josephson junction due to the magnetic field leads to a modulation of the amplitude of the SQUID output signal. The role of the “unwanted” junction in high-Tc rf SQUIDs, which is formed by the grain boundary running through the washer of the SQUIDs on bicrystal substrates, has also been clarified. The drop of the SQUID signal at a finite magnetic field is originated by the penetration of the magnetic field into the unwanted junction. Based on these results, a direct radio-frequency method for the determination of the first critical field Hc1 for long Josephson junctions has been developed.  相似文献

Discussion is focused on the peculiarity of the out-of-plane and the in-plane charge dynamics related to the two-dimensionality in high-Tc cuprates. Recent observations of a double Josephson plasmon and a intra-bilayer Josephson effect remind us that each CuO2-plane is in fact an independent superconducting layer, suggesting that the superconducting coherence length in the c-direction is shorter than the interlayer distance. The origin of this extremely short c-axis coherence length as well as the long c-axis penetration depth is discussed in relation with the incoherent c-axis transport in the normal state. Another peculiarity is a strong itinerant nature of charges within the planes. As an example, it is demonstrated that a static charge order is inhibited even in the “stripe” phase in the cuprates.  相似文献

We report on the first observation of hypernuclear γ transitions using germanium detectors. Using a large-acceptance Ge detector system, we observed two γ transitions in Λ7Li, the spin-flip transition at 689±4keV and the transition at 2050±2 keV (preliminary). The strength of the ΛN spin-spin interaction is derived from the energy of the former transition. As for the latter transition, B(E2) was measured to be 3.9±0.6±0.4 e2fm4 (preliminary), which indicates a shrinkage of the nuclear size of Λ7Li from 6Li and confirms “glue-like role” of Λ.  相似文献
