The main result of this paper is the following theorem, related to the missing link in the proof of the topological version of the classical result of Helly: Let be any family of simply connected compact subsets of R2 such that for every i,j∈{0,1,2} the intersections XiXj are path connected and is nonempty. Then for every two points in the intersection there exists a cell-like compactum connecting these two points, in particular the intersection is a connected set.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is: (i) to construct a space which is semilocally simply connected in the sense of Spanier even though its Spanier group is non-trivial; (ii) to propose a modification of the notion of a Spanier group so that via the modified Spanier group semilocal simple connectivity can be characterized; and (iii) to point out that with just a slightly modified definition of semilocal simple connectivity which is sometimes also used in literature, the classical Spanier group gives the correct characterization within the general class of path-connected topological spaces.While the condition “semilocally simply connected” plays a crucial role in classical covering theory, in generalized covering theory one needs to consider the condition “homotopically Hausdorff” instead. The paper also discusses which implications hold between all of the abovementioned conditions and, via the modified Spanier groups, it also unveils the weakest so far known algebraic characterization for the existence of generalized covering spaces as introduced by Fischer and Zastrow. For most of the implications, the paper also proves the non-reversibility by providing the corresponding examples. Some of them rely on spaces that are newly constructed in this paper.  相似文献

In this note we introduce the concept of a quasi-finite complex. Next, we show that for a given countable simplicial complex L the following conditions are equivalent:
L is quasi-finite.
There exists a [L]-invertible mapping of a metrizable compactum X with e-dimX?[L] onto the Hilbert cube.Finally, we construct an example of a quasi-finite complex L such that its extension type [L] does not contain a finitely dominated complex.

New tools are introduced for the study of homogeneous continua. The subcontinua of a given continuum are classified into three types: filament, non-filament, and ample, with ample being a subcategory of non-filament. The richness of the collection of ample subcontinua of a homogeneous continuum reflects where the space lies in the gradation from being locally connected at one extreme to indecomposable at another. Applications are given to the general theory of homogeneous continua and their hyperspaces.  相似文献

We investigate the structure of the collection of terminal subcontinua in homogeneous continua. The main result is a reduction of this structure to six specific types. Three of these types are of one-dimensional spaces, and examples representing these types are known. It is not known whether higher dimensional examples having non-trivial terminal subcontinua and representing the three remaining types exist.  相似文献

This paper applies the concepts introduced in the article: Filament sets and homogeneous continua [J.R. Prajs, K. Whittington, Filament sets and homogeneous continua, Topology Appl. 154 (8) (2007) 1581-1591, doi:10.1016/j.topol.2006.12.005] to decompositions of homogeneous continua. Several new or strengthened results on aposyndesis are given. Newly defined decompositions are discussed. A proposed classification scheme for homogeneous continua is shown to be mostly invariant under Jones' aposyndetic decomposition.  相似文献

The main result of this paper states that every homogeneous pseudo-path connected continuum is weakly chainable, or equivalently, every homogeneous continuum connected by continuous images of the pseudo-arc is itself a continuous image of the pseudo-arc. We notice that even though there exist homogeneous path connected continua that are not continuous images of an arc (Prajs, 2002), they all are continuous images of the pseudo-arc.  相似文献

In this paper, we answer a question by Krasinkiewicz, Reńska and Sobolewski by constructing countable connected Hausdorff and Urysohn spaces as quotient spaces of bunches of arcs in the plane. We also consider a generalization of graphs by allowing vertices to be continua and replacing edges by not necessarily connected sets. We require only that two “vertices” be in the same quasi-component of the “edge” that contains them. We observe that if a graph G cannot be embedded in the plane, then any generalized graph modeled on G is not embeddable in the plane. As a corollary we obtain not planar bunches of arcs with their natural quotients Hausdorff or Urysohn. This answers another question by Krasinkiewicz, Reńska and Sobolewski.  相似文献

Using ideas from shape theory we embed the coarse category of metric spaces into the category of direct sequences of simplicial complexes with bonding maps being simplicial. Two direct sequences of simplicial complexes are equivalent if one of them can be transformed to the other by contiguous factorizations of bonding maps and by taking infinite subsequences. This embedding can be realized by either Rips complexes or analogs of Roe?s anti-?ech approximations of spaces.In this model coarse n-connectedness of K={K1K2→?} means that for each k there is m>k such that the bonding map from Kk to Km induces trivial homomorphisms of all homotopy groups up to and including n.The asymptotic dimension being at most n means that for each k there is m>k such that the bonding map from Kk to Km factors (up to contiguity) through an n-dimensional complex.Property A of G. We introduce the notions of a brush space and a weak brush space. Each of these spaces has a compact connected core with attached connected fibers and may be either compact or non-compact. Many spaces, both in the Hausdorff non-metrizable setting and in the metric setting, have realizations as (weak) brush spaces. We show that these spaces have the fixed point property if and only if subspaces with core and finitely many fibers have the fixed point property. This result generalizes the fixed point result for generalized Alexandroff/Urysohn Squares in Hagopian and Marsh (2010) [4]. We also look at some familiar examples, with and without the fixed point property, from Bing (1969) [1], Connell (1959) [3], Knill (1967) [7] and note the brush space structures related to these examples.  相似文献

In this paper we examine the role of the β-space property (equivalently of the MCM-property) in generalized ordered (GO-)spaces and, more generally, in monotonically normal spaces. We show that a GO-space is metrizable iff it is a β-space with a Gδ-diagonal and iff it is a quasi-developable β-space. That last assertion is a corollary of a general theorem that any β-space with a σ-point-finite base must be developable. We use a theorem of Balogh and Rudin to show that any monotonically normal space that is hereditarily monotonically countably metacompact (equivalently, hereditarily a β-space) must be hereditarily paracompact, and that any generalized ordered space that is perfect and hereditarily a β-space must be metrizable. We include an appendix on non-Archimedean spaces in which we prove various results announced without proof by Nyikos.  相似文献

Suppose f is a map of a continuum X onto itself. A periodic continuum of f is a subcontinuum K of X such that fn[K]=K for some positive integer n. A proper periodic continuum of f is a periodic continuum of f that is a proper subcontinuum of X. A proper periodic continuum of f is maximal if and only if X is the only periodic continuum that properly contains it. In this paper it is shown that the maximal proper periodic continua of a map of a hereditarily decomposable chainable continuum onto itself follow the Sarkovskii order, provided the maximal proper periodic continua are disjoint. The case in which the Sarkovskii order does not hold reduces to the scenario in which the map's domain is the union of two overlapping period-two continua, each of which is maximal.  相似文献

We present a geometric interpretation of the operation ab and the gyration on the unit-disc as defined by A.A. Ungar. Using this geometric interpretation we show that the two known generalizations to the n-dimensional unit ball are identical. The interpretation in the plane leads us to the notion of outer-median of a triangle and we discuss some possible properties of this median.  相似文献
