The effects of diluent on molecular motions and glass transition in the polystyrene–toluene system was studied by means of dielectric, thermal, and NMR measurements. Three dielectric relaxations were observed between 80 and 400°K. On the basis of NMR measurements on solutions in toluene and in deuterated toluene, relaxation processes were assigned to segmental motions of polystyrene, rotations of toluene, and the local motions of polystyrene and toluene in order of appearance from the high-temperature side. The concentration dependence of the relaxation strength and of the activation energy for the primary relaxation (that at the highest temperature) show a step increment at about 50% by weight. The activation plots for the primary process were expressed by the Vogel–Tamman equation. With this equation, the temperatures at which the mean dielectric relaxation time becomes 100 sec is determined. This agrees well with the glass-transition temperature Tg and hence Tg in concentrated solution is expressed by in terms of the parameters A, B, and T0 of the Vogel–Tamman equation. The values of A and B are, respectively, about 12 and 0.65 and independent of the concentration. The physical meaning of these parameters is discussed.  相似文献

Melt blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(vinyl acetate (PVAc) were prepared andstudied by Torsional Pendulum Analysis (TPA) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). Two glasstransitions were found in these blends. The lower T_g corresponds to the segmental motion in thepure PEO. The dependence of the position and broadness of the higher T_g on composition of theblends indicates that the two components are compatible in the amorphous phase with micro-hetero-geneity. These T_g values observed from mixed PVAc/PEO phase are much higher than that calculatedfrom Fox equation. The comparison of the blends quenched and annealed from melt implies thatPVAc mixed with PEO at the segmental level on molten state and the deviation of T_g values fromFox equation could be due to variation of the blend's composition by crystallization of part of thePEO component. Further indication that the blends are compatible down to the level of chain segments and thatthere are specific interactions between PVAc and PEO molecules comes from the analysis of FTIRspectra of the blends and the solution of PVA in diethylene glycol dimethyl ether.  相似文献

Dielectric measurements, differential thermal analyses, and density measurements are reported on concentrated solutions of polyvinylchloride in tetrahydrofuran. The relaxation processes observed between 80 and 400°K have been classified into four types. From the analysis of experimental data, the primary process at the highest temperature and the process at the lowest temperature are assigned, respectively, to segmental motion of the polymer and motion of the solvent. Activation plots for the primary process conform to the Vogel–Tamman equation. The dielectric glass-transition temperature T'g (defined as the temperature at which the dielectric relaxation time is 100 sec) determined with this equation agrees well with the glass-transition temperature Tg from thermal analysis. Therefore, Tg can be represented by an expression of the form The parameters of the Vogel–Tamman equation A and B are nearly independent of concentration, whereas To depends strongly on concentration. The dipole moment per monomeric unit calculated from the experimental data changes with concentration and exhibits steep increments around 30% and 90% by weight. The width of the distribution of the relaxation time also increases with the concentration. The results were compared with those for the system polystyrene–toluene studies in the same way.  相似文献

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the segmental (α) and secondary (β) relaxations in hydrogen‐bonded poly(4‐vinylphenol)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PVPh/PMMA) blends with PVPh concentrations of 20–80% and at temperatures from ?30 to approximately glass‐transition temperature (Tg) + 80 °C. Miscible blends were obtained by solution casting from methyl ethyl ketone solution, as confirmed by single differential scanning calorimetry Tg and single segmental relaxation process for each blend. The β relaxation of PMMA maintains similar characteristics in blends with PVPh, compared with neat PMMA. Its relaxation time and activation energy are nearly the same in all blends. Furthermore, the dielectric relaxation strength of PMMA β process in the blends is proportional to the concentration of PMMA, suggesting that blending and intermolecular hydrogen bonding do not modify the local intramolecular motion. The α process, however, represents the segmental motions of both components and becomes slower with increasing PVPh concentration because of the higher Tg. This leads to well‐defined α and β relaxations in the blends above the corresponding Tg, which cannot be reliably resolved in neat PMMA without ambiguous curve deconvolution. The PMMA β process still follows an Arrhenius temperature dependence above Tg, but with an activation energy larger than that observed below Tg because of increased relaxation amplitude. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dynamic mechanical properties determined with a torsion pendulum were used to ascertain the glass transition temperature Tg of poly-ε-caprolactone. By measurements on compatible blends of poly-ε-caprolactone and poly(vinyl chloride), the Tg of amorphous poly-ε-caprolactone was shown to be 202°K at about 1 cps. This is 16°K lower than the Tg of annealed, crystalline polymer. The blend transition data were well fitted by both the Fox and the Gordon-Taylor expressions. The Fox expression was also used to describe the decrease from 233°K of the secondary low-temperature relaxation due to poly(vinyl chloride) by assuming the low temperature relaxation of poly-ε-caprolactone, 138°K, was responsible for the decrease in the blends. The 138°K relaxation due to poly-ε-caprolactone was decreased when more than 50% poly(vinyl chloride) was present.  相似文献

Dielectric spectroscopy (DS) measurements were performed to probe the segmental dynamics and ion mobility of poly(vinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate-co-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate) terpolymer dopped with different amounts of tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate ([TBA] [BF4]) ionic liquid (IL). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was also employed to trace the change in the glass transition temperature (Tg) at different loads of IL. The DSC measurements revealed a remarkable reduction in the PVVH Tg from 344 to 310 K just by adding 20 wt% of IL. The DS measurements revealed three relaxation processes named α, β1, and β2. The α-process is related to the segmental motion of PVVH while the β1 and β2 are due to the restricted local dynamics of side chains. The segmental relaxation times (α-relaxation) speed up with increasing the concentration of IL due to the plasticization effect of IL on polymer chains. The temperature dependence of α-relaxation follows the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) relation with dynamic glass transition between 323 and 294 K in agreement with the DSC measurements. The β1 and β2-relaxations have an Arrhenius temperature dependence. The temperature dependence of ionic conductivity obeys the VFT behavior indicating the coupling between the segmental motion of PVVH chains and ion transport. Polaronic tunneling is the predominant conduction mechanism in PVVH and its composites. The specific capacitance increases with increasing both the temperature and IL concentration.  相似文献

Crystal engineering can be described as the understanding of intermolecular interactions in the context of crystal packing and the utilization of such understanding to design new solids with desired physical and chemical properties. Free‐energy differences between supramolecular isomers are generally small and minor changes in the crystallization conditions may result in the occurrence of new isomers. The study of supramolecular isomerism will help us to understand the mechanism of crystallization, a very central concept of crystal engineering. Two supramolecular isomers of dichloridobis(1,10‐phenanthroline‐κ2N,N′)cobalt(II), [CoCl2(C12H8N2)2], i.e. (IA) (orthorhombic) and (IB) (monoclinic), and two supramolecular isomers of dichloridobis(1,10‐phenanthroline‐κ2N,N′)cobalt(II) N,N‐dimethylformamide monosolvate, [CoCl2(C12H8N2)2]·C3H7NO, i.e. (IIA) (orthorhombic) and (IIB) (monoclinic), were synthesized in dimethylformamide (DMF) and structurally characterized. Of these, (IA) and (IIA) have been prepared and structurally characterized previously [Li et al. (2007). Acta Cryst. E 63 , m1880–m1880; Cai et al. (2008). Acta Cryst. E 64 , m1328–m1329]. We found that the heating rate is a key factor for the crystallization of (IA) or (IB), while the temperature difference is responsible for the crystallization of (IIA) or (IIB). Based on the crystallization conditions, isomerization behaviour, the KPI (Kitajgorodskij packing index) values and the density data, (IB) and (IIA) are assigned as the thermodynamic and stable kinetic isomers, respectively, while (IA) and (IIB) are assigned as the metastable kinetic products. The 1,10‐phenanthroline (phen) ligands interact with each other through offset face‐to‐face (OFF) π–π stacking in (IB) and (IIB), but by edge‐to‐face (EF) C—H...π interactions in (IA) and (IIA). Meanwhile, the DMF molecules in (IIB) connect to neighbouring [CoCl2(phen)2] units through two C—H...Cl hydrogen bonds, whereas there are no obvious interactions between DMF molecules and [CoCl2(phen)2] units in (IIA). Since OFF π–π stacking is generally stronger than EF C—H...π interactions for transition‐metal complexes with nitrogen‐containing aromatic ligands, (IIA) is among the uncommon examples that are stable and densely packed but that do not following Etter's intermolecular interaction hierarchy.  相似文献

The development of flexible, room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials remains challenging owing to the quenching of their unstable triplet excitons via molecular motion. Therefore, a polymer matrix with Tg higher than room temperature is required to prevent polymer segment movement. In this study, a RTP material was developed by incorporating a 4-biphenylboronic acid (BPBA) phosphor into a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix (Tg=−27.1 °C), which exhibits a remarkable UV-light-dependent oxygen consumption phosphorescence with a lifetime of 1275.7 ms. The adjustable RTP performance is influenced by the crystallinity and polymorph (α, β, and γ phases) fraction of PVDF, therefore, the low Tg of the PVDF matrix enables the polymeric segmental motion upon microwave irradiation. Consequently, a reduction in the crystallinity and an increase in the α phase fraction in PVDF film induces RTP after 2.45 GHz microwave irradiation. These findings open up new avenues for constructing crystalline and phase-dependent RTP materials while demonstrating a promising approach toward microwave detection.  相似文献

The complex dielectric constant was measured under elevated pressure for the α relaxation of vulcanized chlorinated polyethylene. Both temperature and pressure effects on the static dielectric constants, the activation enthalpy, and volume, and the pressure dependence of the glass-transition temperature were obtained. The dependence of shift factors on temperature was expressed by the Vogel–Fulcher–Tamman–Hesse (VFTH) equation: ?log aT = A ? B/(T ? T0). The parameters A, B, and T0 for each pressure applied were calculated by minimizing the standard deviation between log aT and experiments. The values of the parameters in the Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) equation: ?log aT = C1(T ? Tg)/[C2 + (T ? Tg)], were also estimated from the resulting values of the VFTH parameters. All these parameters depended on pressure. The activation volume plotted against T ? Tg decreased with increasing pressure.  相似文献

Alternating and random copolymers of ethyl α-cyanocinnamate and vinyl acetate were studied. Infrared, 1H, and 13C spectra of the copolymers are discussed by comparison with a model compounds, poly(vinyl acetate), and various copolymers. The decomposition temperature and Tg of copolymers of various composition, studied by TMA and DSC, increase both with increasing content of ethyl α-cyanocinnamate.  相似文献

A diffusive gas-transport isotope effect is used to estimate the size of the free volume element above and below the glass transition for poly(ethyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl fluoride). The cavity size, as measured by the hydrogen probe molecule, is apparently larger in the glassy region for both polymers than it is above Tg. It is postulated that the number of free volume elements essentially decreases below Tg, so that the total free volume, which is the sum of all such elements, is smaller below the glass transition, in accord with density measurements on bulk polymers.  相似文献

The thermal degradation of a series of copolymers of vinyl acetate and methyl acrylate and the two homopolymers poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(methyl acrylate) obtained using Ce(IV) as initiator has been investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetry (TGA) in dynamic nitrogen. The kinetic parameters E, n, and A have been obtained following several methods of thermogravimetric analyses. The stability increases as the methyl acrylate content in the copolymer composition increases. The incorporation of 5 mol % of vinyl acetate in the copolymer produces a marked decrease in stability compared to the homopolymer poly(methyl acrylate). There is evidence for an intramolecular lactonization process in vinyl acetate—methyl acrylate copolymers.  相似文献

The nanobubble inflation method is the only experimental technique that can measure the viscoelastic creep compliance of unsupported ultrathin films of polymers over the glass–rubber transition zone as well as the dependence of the glass transition temperature (Tg) on film thickness. Sizeable reduction of Tg was observed in polystyrene (PS) and bisphenol A polycarbonate by the shift of the creep compliance to shorter times. The dependence of Tg on film thickness is consistent with the published data of free‐standing PS ultrathin films. However, accompanying the shift of the compliance to shorter times, a decrease in the rubbery plateau compliance is observed. The decrease becomes more dramatic in thinner films and at lower temperatures. This anomalous viscoelastic behavior was also observed in poly(vinyl acetate) and poly (n‐butyl methacrylate), but with large variation in the change of either the Tg or the plateau compliance. By now, well established in bulk polymers is the presence of three different viscoelastic mechanisms in the glass–rubber transition zone, namely, the Rouse modes, the sub‐Rouse modes, and the segmental α‐relaxation. Based on the thermorheological complexity of the three mechanisms, the viscoelastic anomaly observed in ultrathin polymer films and its dependence on chemical structure are explained in the framework of the Coupling Model. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The spin-lattice relaxation times are determined for the methylene carbon of polyisobutylene (PIB), as well as for the ortho carbon of toluene in toluene-polyisobutylene solutions. The Hall-Helfand correlation function combined with restricted anisotropic rotational diffusion was used to treat the T1 data of the methylene carbon of PIB. A simple exponential correlation function was used to describe the local motion of toluene in the solutions which falls in the extreme narrowing limit for the solutions studied. Both models described satisfactorily the temperature and field dependence of the spin-lattice relation times. From the temperature dependence of the correlation times for the polymer segmental motion, the free volume of the solution at each concentration is extracted and compared with the values obtained from previous studies of the translational motion of the toluene penetrant. The free volume values extracted from the T1 data for the methylene carbon of PIB and the self-diffusion data for the toluene were found to be in substantial agreement. The interrelationship of the timescale of segmental motion of the polymer and the translational diffusion of the toluene was also examined and it was found that the two types of motion seem to be correlated in high polymer concentrated solutions. The toluene reorientational motion was found to be much faster than both the polymer segmental motion and the toluene translational diffusion leading to the conclusion that the toluene reorientational motion is uncoupled from these two motions. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The crystallization process of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)and PEO/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) blends has been characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR) spectra in conjunction with Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) measurements. Thecrystallinity of PEO varies consistently with PEO content in PEO/PVAc blends and the PEO/PMMAblends containing 50 wt% or less PMMA. For the PEO/PMMA blends containing 60 wt% ormore PMMA, the crystallinity of PEO decreases more than PEO content but develops with crystal-lization time. These results can be explained in terms of difference between the crystallization tem-perature (T_c) and glass transition temperature (T_g) of the blends as a function of content of amorphouscomponent.  相似文献

Vinyl fluoride was polymerized by photochemical initiation in a continuous-flow cylindrical reactor at room temperature and at pressures of up to 30 atm. Copolymers with vinyl acetate were prepared in order to improve the solubility and processability of poly(vinyl fluoride) (PVF). The copolymers were hydrolyzed to the corresponding vinyl alcohol copolymers and yielded hydrophilic films that are strong and flexible only when swollen by water. It was found that on hydrolysis the Tg, Tm, and heat of fusion as well as degree of crystallinity increased. It was suggested that PVF and the copolymers with vinyl alcohol are isomorphous.  相似文献

Measurements of the complex permittivity were used to study miscibility and phase behavior in blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with two random ethylene—vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers containing 45 and 70 wt % of vinyl acetate. The dielectric β relaxation of the pure polymers and blends was followed as a function of temperature and frequency for different blend compositions and thermal treatments. Blends of EVA 70/PVC were found to be miscible for compositions of about 25% EVA 70 and higher. Blends of lower EVA 70 content showed evidence of two-phase behavior. EVA 45/PVC blends were found to be miscible only at the composition extremes; at intermediate compositions these blends were two-phase, partially miscible. Both blend systems showed lower critical solution temperature behavior. Phase separation studies revealed that in the EVA 45/PVC blends, PVC was capable of diffusing into the higher Tg phase at temperatures below the Tg of the upper phase. In the blends, ion transport losses were significant above the loss peak temperatures, and in the two-phase systems, often obscured the upper temperature loss process. It was shown possible, however, to correct the loss curves for this transport contribution.  相似文献

The photochromic effect has been investigated for three compounds of the benzospiran group dissolved in amorphous polymers: poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(n-butyl methacrylate), poly(vinyl acetate), and poly(vinyl n-butyrate). The kinetics of the thermal bleaching reaction above Tg of the matrix follow a first-order equation due to the averaging of free volume distribution related to the diffusion of segments in viscoelastic state. A more complex mechanism of decolorization below Tg has been considered from the point of view of unequal, discrete distribution of environments in which the photochromic molecules exist in the glassy matrix. A change of the activation energy and the mechanism of color decay on passing through Tg is not a rule (PVB), which shows, that for a polymer having long, flexible chains, secondary glass transition phenomena play a decisive role. In the case of glassy polymers (PMMA), the photochromic effect of benzospirans may be employed to determine Tβ. It seems, that in addition to steric restrictions for trans–cis isomerization in the decolorization process one must consider the interactions of photochromic molecules with the matrix as well as their chemical nature.  相似文献

Diglycidyl ether of bisfenol-A (DGEBA)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/poly(4-vinyl phenol) brominated (PVPhBr) ternary blends cured with 4,4’-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Homogeneous (DGEBA+DDM)/PVPhBr networks with a unique T g are generated. Ternary blends (DGEBA+DDM)/PVAc/PVPhBr are initially miscible and phase separate upon curing arising two T gs that correspond to a PVAc-rich phase and to epoxy network phase. Increasing the PVPhBr content the T gof the PVAc phase move to higher temperatures as a consequence of the PVAc-PVPhBr interactions. Different morphologies are generated as a function of the blend composition.  相似文献

Blends of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAI) with poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) were prepared by casting from a common solvent. All blends show a single, composition dependent glass transition temperature (Tg), indicating that the blends are miscible in the amorphous state and in the melt. The overall crystallization rate of PVAI in the blend decreases with increasing PEI content. The crystallinity index of PVAI in the blend does not decrease greatly with PEI content up to a composition of 70/30 PVAI/PEI, since the Tg of the crystallizable component PVAI is larger than that of the non-crystallizable component PEI. The Tg of the system PVAI/PEI decreases with increasing PEI content. The interaction parameter B of the two polymers in the melt was found to be −24 J/cm3.  相似文献
