This review article describes the preparation of polymer brushes by nitroxide‐mediated radical polymerization using either the ‘grafting to’ or the ‘grafting from’ approach. The use of TEMPO as a classical initiator is intensively described. More sophisticated nitroxides are also included in the discussion. Brush formation on flat surfaces such as wafers and also on particles is reported. Finally, some applications of polymer brushes are presented.

Photolabile polymer brushes with tailored length containing a photoremovable protecting group (NVOC) are prepared via the SI‐ATRP method. Upon light irradiation, the NVOC group is removed to generate controlled densities of free amine groups (PAMA) randomly distributed along the brush. The presence of the ionizable groups induces a photo‐triggered swelling response. The swelling degree can be tuned by the irradiation dose. A dual (light and pH), tunable response is demonstrated.

Summary: Magnetic nanoparticles have been prepared by a co‐precipitation method and modified with methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane. Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer particles have been prepared by suspension polymerization in silicone oil. The particles possess a high affinity to the template molecules and are rapidly separated under a magnetic field.

A series of selenophene oligomers incorporating conjugated fluorinated phenylene units have been synthesised as potential semiconductor materials for organic field‐effect transistors (OFETs). X‐ray crystallography shows that the molecules are held in close proximity by several short intermolecular contacts, making them ideal candidates for OFET applications.

Summary: The synthesis of aqueous dispersions of hybrid acrylic copolymer particles with either a monofunctional or a multifunctional polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane methacrylate comonomer has been performed by free radical heterophase polymerization. The miniemulsion process gives stable latexes, whereas the less controlled emulsion route results in colloidal instability of the products. The thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite latex films have been preliminarily investigated.

Summary: The success of metathesis chemistry techniques has sparked a tremendous interest in polymer and material chemistry. This contribution provides an overview of the state of the art in ring opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP). It is intended to provide the reader with useful information on the interplay of initiators, monomers, and reaction conditions, thus aiding polymer chemists to utilise the ROMP toolbox. Prominent and illustrative examples from current research are given in the article.

The present study investigates shape properties of the enzyme dUTPase from Escherichia coli in the solution phase. In this work small angle neutron scattering (SANS) findings on dUTPase/D2O solutions for temperature values of T = 8 °C and T = 37 °C are presented. The analysis of SANS data, carried out by using a prolate ellipsoid core/shell model fitting and the well‐known Guinier and Zimm analysis procedures allows the characterization of the shape of the protein in solution. By means of the comparison with experimental and theoretical data existing in literature on dUTPase in the crystalline state, we find that the protein in solution maintains its dimensions before the denaturation process. Furthermore, by analyzing the SANS spectra of dUTPase/D2O/trehalose solutions, we emphasize the bioprotective effects of trehalose on the protein.

Perfectly alternating copolymers can be synthesised by reacting diacrylates with terminal dienes using alternating diene metathesis polycondensation (ALTMET). This novel method is very versatile and allows preparation of diverse structures of polymers, including main‐chain liquid crystalline polymers.

Summary: A series of high clay content Laponite XLS/polyacrylamide (PAAm) nanocomposite hydrogels (S‐M gels) with excellent resilience, low elastic hysteresis, and ultrahigh elongation, have been successfully synthesized. Based on our results, it is concluded that the mechanical properties of nanocomposite hydrogels probably depend to a great extent on the hydrophilicity and flexibility of the macromolecules. Moreover, it is found that the transparency during the in‐situ polymerization of S‐M gels does not change, which is quite different from clay/poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) nanocomposite hydrogels.

The storage moduli, shear moduli and surface morphologies of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and alumina hybrid hydrogels were investigated. The storage moduli of hybrid hydrogels with higher alumina contents were found to be 1.5 times higher than those of PVA gels. This increase in modulus might be attributed to the cohesion of alumina to the PVA network.

Biodegradable polymeric nanocylinders were fabricated by segmental degradation of electrospun nanofibers. Poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLA) was electrospun to produce non‐crystalline nanofibers that were immediately treated with amino group‐containing strong bases to fabricate semi‐crystalline PLA nanocylinders with tunable aspect ratio. The formation of PLA nanocylinders was attributed to two concurrent events occurring during the aminolysis reaction: (i) development of stacked lamellae and (ii) transversely oriented degradation and fragmentation of the amorphous gaps between lamellae, both responsible for the fragmentation of PLA nanofibers into uniformly shaped nanocylinders. The aspect ratio of PLA nanocylinders was tunable by varying aminolysis time and controlling nanofiber diameter.

Kinetic simulations are reported, where the ATRP equilibrium constant KATRP is varied and the rates and degree of control in different ATRP systems are evaluated. The apparent rate constant kapp increases with increasing KATRP, but a maximum is reached. The limit of control is passed before the maximum, i.e. when KATRP is increased further, apparent first‐order kinetics and well‐controlled molecular weights will no longer be obtained. The equilibrium constant at which the limit of control is reached varies linearly with the propagation rate constant. This enables the design of well controlled ATRP systems. The influence of the conversion and chain length dependence of the termination rate constant on the simulation results is discussed.

Summary: This article reports the application of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to monitor the interaction between polymer‐DNA complexes and glycoaminoglycans (GAG). The GAG selected was hyaluronic acid (HA). First a HA derivative containing a disulfide linkage was synthesized, enabling chemisorption onto a gold surface. Next, the interaction between different complexes (prepared using PEI or PDMAEMA) and HA was studied using SPR. This study clearly indicates that GAG‐polyplex interactions depend on the type of polymer selected and on the charge ratio of the polyplexes prepared.

The derivative developed opens up new perspectives in the field of nonviral gene delivery.  相似文献

Summary: Aliphatic dithiol‐diacid type polythioesters were first enzymatically prepared by the direct polycondensation of hexane‐1,6‐dithiol and diacid diesters using the immobilized lipase from Candida antarctica (lipase CA). As a typical example, diethyl sebacate and hexane‐1,6‐dithiol were polymerized using lipase CA in bulk in the presence of molecular sieves 4A to produce the corresponding polythioester with an of 10 200 in 90% yield. Both the melting and crystallization temperatures of the produced polythioesters were higher when compared to those of the corresponding polyoxyesters. A higher molecular weight polythioester was produced using lipase in a two‐step procedure, i.e., cyclization with subsequent ring‐opening polymerization.

Organic π‐conjugated polymers have emerged as one of the most fascinating classes of materials as they have found utility in a host of plastic electronics technologies. The distance between π‐systems and their relative orientation dictate energy/charge transfer, conductivity, and photophysical properties of these materials in bulk. This Feature Article discusses π‐conjugated polymers and model compounds in which specific inter‐π‐system interactions are covalently enforced and the effect that the scaffolding has on optoelectronic properties.
