Colloidal photonic crystals were prepared from monodisperse core–shell particles. The shell is hereby formed from a functional monomer, such as glycidylmethacrylate or different reactive ester monomers, which can perform chemical reactions and the core from a standard monomer, which yields highly monodisperse colloids. It was possible to crystallize the core–shell particles into artificial opals with excellent optical properties. Reactions on the functional surface of the colloids were carried out, which lead to a dramatic rise in the mechanical stability or to a functionalization of His‐tagged silicatein, which acts as nanoreactor to synthesize and immobilize gold nanoparticles from auric acid onto the core–shell colloids.

Colloidal quantum dots are well‐established probes for quantum optical experiments. However, they possess a limited stability toward their environment. Herein, the generation of hybrid particles composed of a high optical quality quantum dot centered in a polymer particle by means of a miniemulsion polymerization procedure is reported. This embedding strongly enhances emission intensity and photochemical stability of these single‐photon emitters. At the same time, their colloidal mobile nature is not compromised.

We assess the elastic properties of PS‐b‐PAA vesicle membranes under different pH values by AFM force measurements. We find that based on the shell deformation theory, the values of the estimated apparent Young's modulus of the vesicle membranes decrease as the pH of the solution increases. The onset of the decrease of E coincides with the surface pKa determined from ζ‐potential measurements. This decrease of E at higher pH is attributed to electrostatic repulsion between the deprotonated PAA chains resulting in the thinning of the vesicle membrane.

Transparent film materials with excellent mechanical and thermal properties were elaborated by drying a latex suspension of armored polymer/Laponite composite particles. Low‐temperature TEM observation of ultrathin cross‐sections of the films indicated a unique network morphology characterized by a “honeycomb” distribution of the Laponite platelets remindful of the original particles morphology.

In this work, we design and synthesize a kind of amphiphilic mushroom cap‐shaped particles with wettability difference on the opposite sides of the particles. Colloidal crystals consisting of uniformly oriented anisotropic particles were fabricated on the water–air interface based on the wettability difference of particles. This simple approach offers a new way for self‐assembly of anisotropic colloidal crystal by amphiphilic design of particles.

Intrinsically glucoside‐based microspheres are prepared in olive oil via a water in oil inverse suspension polymerization. The microspheres are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), evidencing the intrinsic glucose character of the spheres. A novel boronic acid fluorescent molecule was subsequently conjugated to the microspheres in an aqueous environment, exhibiting the spatial and uniform distribution of glucoside as well as the affinity of the microspheres to bind with boron, evidenced via fluorescence spectroscopy measurements.

Poly(ethersulfone) membranes were surface modified in a one‐step procedure. For this purpose, the membranes were soaked with aqueous solutions of different low‐molecular weight molecules bearing diverse hydrophilic functionalities and subject to electron beam treatment. No catalysts, photoinitiators, organic solvents or other toxic reagents were used, and no additional synthetic or purification steps were required.

Novel glucosamine hydrochloride functionalized water‐soluble conjugated polyfluorene was easily synthesized through Cu(I)‐catalyzed azide/alkyne “click” ligation and Suzuki coupling polymerization. The water‐solubility and biocompatibility of the polymer were improved after grafting glucosamine hydrochloride to the side chains of the conjugated polymer. As a fluorescent model system of chitosan, its interaction with single‐stranded DNA was studied by spectrofluorometric titration.

Summary: Fabrication of honeycomb‐patterned films from amphiphilic dendronized block copolymer (PEO113b‐PDMA82) by ‘on‐solid surface spreading’ and ‘on‐water spreading’ method is reported. Highly ordered honeycomb films with quasi‐horizontally paralleled double‐layered structure can be fabricated by the on‐solid surface spreading method. This work raises the possibility that such structures can be formed in amphiphilic dendronized block copolymers and extends the family of source materials.

Summary: The synthesis, morphology, and photophysical properties of PF‐b‐PAA with different coil lengths in dilute solutions of dichloromethane/methanol are reported. A tape‐like lamellar morphology is observed at a short coil length of PF‐b‐PAA. As the coil length increases, a large compound micelle, sphere, or vesicle is observed with different methanol contents because of the enhancement of the PAA swelling with methanol and the interfacial tension between the PF core and the PAA corona. Upon further increase of the coil length, an inverted morphology of a sphere or rod with a PF corona and PAA core is first observed but the core/corona is then reversed at a high methanol content as a result of the enhanced solubility of PAA. The morphological transformation leads to a significant variation in optical absorption or fluorescence characteristics because of the possible H‐aggregate formation.

The layer‐by‐layer (LBL) assembly of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) on poly(sulfo propyl methacrylate) brushes resulted in films with nanometer‐ and micrometer‐sized holes and ledges, observed by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Polyelectrolyte assembly was followed by the quartz microbalance technique. The formation of ledges and holes is explained by the interaction of the brush polymers with the incoming polyelectrolytes during the LBL assembly, inducing a spatially localized and self‐organized accumulation of the assembled polymers.

Summary: Raspberry‐like aggregates containing secondary nanospheres were studied. The formation of raspberry‐like aggregates was due to complexation between core‐shell microspheres and core‐corona micelles. The core‐shell microspheres were synthesized with soap‐free polymerization of styrene and methyl acrylic acid, which included carboxyl groups in the periphery. The micelles were self‐assembled by polystyrene‐block‐poly(4‐vinylpyridine), which contained pyridine groups in the corona. The driven force to form raspberry‐like aggregates was due to the affinity between the carboxyl and pyridine groups. The morphology of the raspberry‐like aggregates could be tuned by changing the ratio of the microspheres to micelles. IR measurements suggested that the raspberry‐like aggregates were like zwitterions.

A poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐poly(2‐vinyl pyridine)‐block‐poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA‐PAA‐P2VP‐PAA‐PMMA), pentablock terpolymer has been synthesized by anionic polymerization with sequential addition of monomers and studied in aqueous media at low pH. The system exhibits combined properties and adopts the behavior of ‘telechelic’ polyelectrolytes and that of double hydrophilic polyampholytes. This complex behavior leads to the pentablock terpolymer forming a pH and temperature sensitive reversible hydrogel at very low polymer concentration.

Summary: Monodisperse thermosensitive PS‐NIPA core‐shell particles composed of a PS core and a cross‐linked PNIPA shell can be successfully synthesized by a novel method: photoemulsion polymerization. Cryo‐TEM images indicate clearly the core‐shell morphology of the PS‐NIPA particles: A homogeneous regular PNIPA shell has been affixed on the spherical PS core. DLS measurements indicate that the obtained PS‐NIPA latex particles are thermosensitive. The shell of PNIPA networks with different cross‐linking densities can shrink and re‐swell with temperature and the volume transition temperature is around 32 °C in all cases.

Summary: Polyelectrolyte multilayer films of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and PAH/poly(sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate) (PSS) based on electrostatic interactions as a driving force are patterned by room‐temperature nanoimprint lithography (RT‐NIL). Under an imprinting pressure of 40 bar for 8 min, well‐defined pattern structures with a line width of 330 nm and a separation of 413 nm are achieved. Meanwhile, hydrogen‐bonding‐directed multilayer films of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVPON)/poly(methyl acrylic acid) (PMAA) and poly(4‐vinylpyridine)/PAA can also be patterned in a similar way by RT‐NIL. The successful imprinting of these films originates from the high compressibility and fluidity of the layered polymeric films under high pressure.

Using a layer‐multiplying coextrusion process to fabricate films with thousands of alternating polymer nanolayers, we report here a new crystalline morphology in confined polymer nanolayers and an abrupt transition in the crystallization habit. At higher temperatures, poly(ethylene oxide) crystallizes as large, in‐plane lamellae. A 5 °C change in the crystallization temperature produces an on‐edge lamellar orientation. The results point to a transition from heterogeneous nucleation to substrate‐assisted nucleation. This may be a general phenomenon that accounts for previously unexplained differences in the preferred chain alignment of confined polymer crystals.

Au nanoparticles (NPs) and polymer composite particles with phase‐separation structures were prepared based on phase separation structures. Au NPs were successfully synthesized in amphiphilic block‐copolymer micelles, and then composite particles were formed by a simple solvent evaporation process from Au NPs and polymer solution. The phase separated structures (Janus and Core‐shell) were controlled by changing the combination of polymers having differing hydrophobicity.

Summary: The recrystallization behavior of high density polyethylene (HDPE) single crystals with vacuum evaporated metal chromium or carbon on their surface has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) techniques. The results indicate that the particle‐coated HDPE single crystals can retain their single crystal structure after complete melting and subsequent recrystallization, with the heat‐treated temperature as high as 200 °C. This phenomenon is attributed to a surface fixing effect of vacuum evaporated Cr or carbon on the single crystals.

π‐Conjugated microporous networks have been prepared from the tetraarylated diketopyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole unit as a tetrafunctional building block. The reactions are carried out using microwave‐assisted Yamamoto or Sonogashira cross‐coupling. Red insoluble powders are obtained, showing intense fluorescence. The polymer networks exhibit a high gas storage capability, with BET surface areas up to about 500 m2 · g−1.
