Self‐assembly of two‐dimensional (2D) structures from functional molecules is of great scientific importance. Herein, using a typical linear conducting polymer, polyaniline as building blocks, 2D single crystalline microplates are successively produced. The structure of 2D microplates is clearly defined by selected area electron diffraction, X‐ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. Owing to the anisotropic arrangement of linear conjugated PANI molecules, the microplate shows a typical anisotropic electrical transport property.

Summary: A chiral, regioregular poly[3‐(4‐alkoxyphenyl)thiophene] has been prepared and studied. Films prepared by fast evaporation of the solvent, consist of random‐coils, while films prepared by slow evaporation are composed of chirally aggregated, coplanar strands. Heat treatment transforms the random‐coils into aggregated films via an intermediate state, which was characterized as chiral, coplanar, unaggregated polymer strands.

Herein, a convenient and general method to simultaneously fix and functionalize polymeric vesicles with sulphydryl groups by the co‐self‐assembly of poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly[3‐(triethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate] (PEO‐b‐PTESPMA) and 3‐mercaptopropyltrialkoxysilane in an aqueous solution is reported. The presence of sulphydryl groups across the vesicle membrane has been confirmed by using an energy‐filtered technique during TEM analysis and by capturing Au nanoparticles.

Summary: We have successfully constructed a redox‐responsible hydrogel system by combination of β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD), dodecyl‐modified poly(acrylic acid) [p(AA/C12)], and a redox‐responsive guest, ferrocenecarboxylic acid (FCA). In the reduced state of FCA, the ternary mixture exhibited a gel‐like behavior, whereas, in its oxidized state, the mixture exhibited a sol behavior.

Summary: A methacrylate‐functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) macromonomer was copolymerized at the surface of methacrylate‐derivatized maghemite nanoparticles. After silylation of the magnetic core with methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, two grafting procedures based on either a direct copolymerization reaction in water or an inverse emulsion polymerization were compared. A direct copolymerization led to low polymer surface amounts, whereas an inverse emulsion process allowed nanocomposite particles containing up to 90 wt.‐% polymer to be obtained.

Spherical single‐chain‐particles of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) were prepared in aqueous solution above the lower critical solution temperature upon the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The size of the single‐chain‐particles was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and viscosity measurements of the corresponding solutions, indicating the absence of inter‐chain entanglements among the single‐chain‐particles.

A nickel α‐diimine catalyst was used for Grignard metathesis (GRIM) polymerization of 2,5‐dibromo 3‐hexylthiophene and 2‐bromo‐5‐iodo‐3‐hexylthiophene monomers. GRIM polymerization of 2‐bromo‐5‐iodo‐3‐hexylthiophene generated regioregular polymers with molecular weights ranging from 3 000 to 12 000 g · mol−1. The nickel α‐diimine catalyst was also successfully used for the GRIM polymerization of a bulky benzodithiophene monomer.

A simple scheme to fabricate 2‐D arrays of Au/titania hybrid nanopatterns is presented, using polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer (PS‐b‐PEO) as templates coupled with sol–gel chemistry. Both the functionalized Au nanoparticles (NPs) and titania precursors are selectively incorporated into the PEO domain. A series of morphologies ranging from nanodot to nanowire arrays is formed and the mechanism of morphological evolution is discussed. Such hybrid films exhibit characteristic localized surface plasmon resonance bands originating from the coupling between neighboring Au NPs spatially located in a controlled manner.

Summary: A novel non‐aqueous emulsion system, consisting of cyclohexane as the continuous and acetonitrile as the dispersed phase, is described. Stabilization of the system can be achieved by using polyisoprene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) copolymers as emulsifiers. The suitability of this system for performing water‐sensitive, catalytic, and oxidative polymerizations and polycondensations is demonstrated by the synthesis of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene), poly(thiophene‐3‐yl‐acetic acid), and polyacetylene. In all cases spherical nanoparticles with diameters as small as 23 nm can be obtained.

The preparation of associative networks containing multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with covalently attached cyclodextrin (CD) rings and poly[(isobutylene)‐co‐(maleic anhydride)‐co‐(maleic acid‐(4‐tert‐butylphenyl)amide)] in water is described in this study. The synthesis of CD containing MWCNTs is realized by an amidation reaction of oxidized MWCNTs with propargylamine followed by a 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition with CD‐azide. Dispersion behavior indicated the high stability of these networks. An increase in viscosity compared to a solution of pure polymer as a cause of network formation is observed. The addition of a CD‐decomposing enzyme (taka‐diastase from Aspergillus oryzae) let the network collapse and results in sedimentation of the modified MWCNTs.

Nonlinear optical vinyl polymers with high glass transition temperature (Tg) were prepared by the functionalization of a fluorinated acrylate‐methyl vinyl isocyanate copolymer. A modified pathway to obtain a thiophene bridged chromophore was worked out. Poled films of the polymers show a fairly high and stable nonlinear optical response, even at elevated temperatures.

Two new, fully conjugated polymeric cyanine dyes based on trimethine and heptamethine moieties have been synthesized. Both polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, UV‐vis and IR spectroscopy, elementary analysis and cyclic voltammetry. The structure of one material could be confirmed with NMR spectroscopy. Upon head‐to‐tail coupling of the dye moieties distinct bathochromic shifts up to 159 nm were observed for the polymers which absorb solely in the near infrared (NIR) region with maxima up to 1 002 nm and very high molar absorption coefficients. This highly efficient absorption in the NIR spectral domain combined with the strong electron accepting properties makes these dyes interesting candidates for many optical applications; investigations on photovoltaic devices based on polymeric cyanine dye/C60 heterojunctions identify one of these possibilities.

The synthesis of primary amine end‐functional poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)s has been achieved by using the Gabriel reaction. Polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate was first achieved by atom transfer radical polymerization using ethyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate or paramethoxyphenyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate as initiator. Both resulting polymers, with a bromide‐end atom, were converted into phthalimido intermediates which then were successfully hydrolyzed using potassium hydroxide in tert‐butyl alcohol to result in poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)s terminated by a primary amine function. End group interconversions were followed by 1H NMR, FT‐IR, and MALDI‐TOF MS measurements. All the results proved that quantitative transformations were achieved at each step. Moreover, the method developed is very easy to carry out.

We present an efficient method for functionalizing the large polymer–air interface of a gyroid nanoporous polymer. The hydrophilicity of nanoporous cross‐linked 1,2‐polybutadiene is tuned by thiol‐ene photo‐grafting of mercaptosuccinic acid or sodium 2‐mercaptoethanesulfonate. The reaction is monitored by FT‐IR, UV–Vis, contact angle, and gravimetry. Overall quantum yields are calculated for the two thiol‐ene “click” reactions in nano‐confinement, neatly revealing their chain‐like nature. Top–down photolithographic patterning is demonstrated, realizing hydrophilic nanoporous “corridors” exclusively hosting water. The presented approach can be relevant for many applications where, e.g., high control and contrast in hydrophilicity, chemical functionality or refractive index are needed.

Summary: We report novel organic‐inorganic hybrid nanomaterials that consist of polymer hydrogel nanoparticles (nanogels) and calcium phosphate. Hybrid nanoparticles that measure ca. 40 nm are synthesized from a dilute solution of hydroxyapatite using nanogels as templates for calcium phosphate mineralization. These nanoparticles show a narrow size distribution and high colloidal stability. Nanogel‐adsorbed liposomes act as templates for hierarchical hybrid nanostructures. These nanohybrids can potentially be used as biocompatible drug carriers with controlled‐release properties.

Chromophore‐containing dendritic structures (G1, G2) are utilized to intercalate layered silicates, which results in a large d‐spacing up to 126 Å. An exfoliated morphology is obtained by mixing the dendritic structure intercalated layered silicates with polyimide in N,N‐dimethylacetamide solution. The dendritic structures attached on the clay template would arrange in a non‐centrosymmetric manner. This self‐assembled arrangement brought about the electro‐optical coefficients of 5–6 pm · V−1 for these relatively low chromophore‐containing organic/inorganic nanocomposites without resorting to poling. Excellent temporal stability (100 °C) is also achieved.

Summary: The coordinative polymerization/cyclization of a flexible monodisperse di‐terpyridine ligand with iron(II ) chloride is reported. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight (MALDI‐TOF) investigations showed the preferred formation of a [2 + 2] macrocycle, but also larger aggregates (cycles or linear oligomers) with up to 10 monomer units were found. Because of its C16‐spacer, the solubility is sufficient for performing viscosity experiments in CHCl3/MeOH solution. A viscosity titration revealed a maximum in viscosity at the 1‐to‐1 ratio of iron(II ) ions to di‐terpyridine‐ligands, which indicates the formation of extended oligomers, polymers, catenanes and/or cycles at that ratio.

A novel colorimetric and fluorometric chemosensor for Hg2+ detection based on poly(p‐phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) containing benzo[2,1,3]thiadiazole (BDT) has been developed. A highly Hg2+‐selective fluorescence quenching property in conjunction with a visible colorimetric change from yellow to violet can be observed, which indicates that PPE‐BDT can serve as a sensitive ‘naked‐eye’ indicator for Hg2+.
