One of the longstanding problems in universal algebra is the question of which finite lattices are isomorphic to the congruence lattices of finite algebras. This question can be phrased as which finite lattices can be represented as lattices of equivalence relations on finite sets closed under certain first-order formulas. We generalize this question to a different collection of first-order formulas, giving examples to demonstrate that our new question is distinct. We then note that every lattice M n can be represented in this new way.  相似文献

We consider the question of which zero-dimensional schemes deform to a collection of distinct points; equivalently, we ask which Artinian k-algebras deform to a product of fields. We introduce a syzygetic invariant which sheds light on this question for zero-dimensional schemes of regularity two. This invariant imposes obstructions for smoothability in general, and it completely answers the question of smoothability for certain zero-dimensional schemes of low degree. The tools of this paper also lead to other results about Hilbert schemes of points, including a characterization of nonsmoothable zero-dimensional schemes of minimal degree in every embedding dimension d?4.  相似文献

In this paper we answer in the negative a question due to J. P. R. Christensen about almost everywhere existence of nearest points using a decomposition of ℓ2 due to J. Matoušek and E. Matoušková. We also formulate a similar question about almost everywhere existence of farthest points and answer it in the negative. We study the growth of the Betti sequence of the canonical module of a Cohen–Macaulay local ring. It is an open question whether this sequence grows exponentially whenever the ring is not Gorenstein. We answer the question of exponential growth affirmatively for a large class of rings, and prove that the growth is in general not extremal. As an application of growth, we give criteria for a Cohen–Macaulay ring possessing a canonical module to be Gorenstein. GJL was partly supported by a grant from the National Security Agency. Star chromatic number, introduced by A. Vince, is a natural generalization of chromatic number. We consider the question, “When is χ* < χ?” We show that χ* < χ if and only if a particular digraph is acyclic and that the decisioin problem associated with this question is probably not in NP though it is both NP-hard and NP-easy. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

This paper addresses the question: when the frequency of collisions vanishes, will the solutions of the Landau system converge to the solutions of the Vlasov system? This paper addresses three questions related to George Berkeley’s theory of compensating errors in the calculus published in 1734. The first is how did Berkeley conceive of Leibnizian differentials? The second and most central question concerns Berkeley’s procedure which consisted in identifying two quantities as errors and proving that they are equal. The question is how was this possible? The answer is that this was not possible, because in his calculations Berkeley misguided himself by employing a result equivalent to what he wished to prove. In 1797 Lazare Carnot published the expression “a compensation of errors” in an attempt to explain why the calculus functions. The third question is: did Carnot by this expression mean the same as Berkeley?  相似文献

We prove the main result from Schmüdgen's 2003 article in a more elementary way. The result states that the question of whether a finitely generated preordering has the so-called strong moment property can be reduced to the same question for preorderings corresponding to fiber sets of bounded polynomials.

We present a monostable delayed reaction–diffusion equation with the unimodal birth function which admits only non-monotone wavefronts. Moreover, these fronts are either eventually monotone (in particular, such is the minimal wave) or slowly oscillating. Hence, for the Mackey–Glass type diffusive equations, we answer affirmatively the question about the existence of non-monotone non-oscillating wavefronts. As it was recently established by Hasik et al. and Ducrot et al., the same question has a negative answer for the KPP-Fisher equation with a single delay.  相似文献

In [2] it was shown with reference to the cylindrical bending of a plate that the Kirchhoff-Love hypothesis is asympototically accurate for determining the critical load irrespective of the properties of the material. However, the question of the dependence of the critical load on the material properties was left unexplored. This question is now numerically investigated. This article addresses a question of Carl de Boor (In: Constructive theory of functions, Varna 2005, pp. 51–63, Marin Drinov Academic, Sofia, [2006]): What ideal projectors are the limits of Lagrange projectors? The results of this paper answer the question in the sense that for every ideal projector P, we prescribe finitely many computations that determine whether the projector P is a limit of Lagrange projectors.  相似文献

We investigate the deformation theory of the simplest bihamiltonian structure of hydrodynamic type, that of the dispersionless KdV hierarchy. We prove that all of its deformations are quasi-trivial in the sense of B. Dubrovin and Y. Zhang, that is, trivial after allowing transformations where the first partial derivative ∂u of the field is inverted. We reformulate the question about deformations as a question about the cohomology of a certain double complex, and calculate the appropriate cohomology group.  相似文献

This paper deals with a classical question of Frey and Jarden, who asked in their 1974 paper if any non-zero Abelian variety over a number field K acquires infinite rank over the maximal Abelian extension Kab of the ground field. We generalize recent results of Rosen and Wong on the subject. However, the original question in full generality remains open. Some further results on the rank in certain other infinite extensions are included.  相似文献

In 1891, Poincaré started a series of three papers in which he tried to answer the following question (cf. [21-23]): “Is it possible to decide if an algebraic differential equation in two variables is algebraically integrable?” (in the sense that it has a rational first integral). More or less at the same time P. Painlevé asked the following question: “Is it possible to recognize the genus of the general solution of an algebraic differential equation in two variables which has a rational first integral?”. In this paper we give examples of one-parameter families which show that both problems have a negative answer. With some of the families we can also answer a question posed by M. Brunella in [5].  相似文献

After publishing his recent paper in SIAM J. Appl. Math. 74, 392–410, 2014 the author has realized that actually he has addressed in that paper, for the first time, a long standing open question being unaware about this. This question is about the uniqueness of a 3-d inverse scattering problem without the phase information. Thus, it makes sense in the current paper to explicitly make the latter statement and to formulate corresponding uniqueness theorems.  相似文献

We study the the following question in Random Graphs. We are given two disjoint sets L,R with |L| = n and |R| = m. We construct a random graph G by allowing each xL to choose d random neighbours in R. The question discussed is as to the size μ(G) of the largest matching in G. In this note we exhibit bases of the polynomial identities satisfied by the Grassmann algebras over a field of positive characteristic. This allows us to answer the following question of Kemer: Does the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra with 1, over an infinite fieldK of characteristic 3, satisfy all identities of the algebraM 2(K) of all 2×2 matrices overK? We give a negative answer to this question. Further, we show that certain finite dimensional Grassmann algebras do give a positive answer to Kemer's question. All this allows us to obtain some information about the identities satisfied by the algebraM 2(K) over an infinite fieldK of positive odd characteristic, and to conjecture bases of theidentities ofM 2(K).  相似文献

In 2002 Jarque and Villadelprat proved that planar polynomial Hamiltonian systems of degree 4 have no isochronous centers and raised an open question for general planar polynomial Hamiltonian systems of even degree. Recently, it was proved that a planar polynomial Hamiltonian system is non-isochronous if a quantity, denoted by M2m−2, can be computed such that M2m−2≤0. As a corollary of this criterion, the open question was answered for those systems with only even degree nonlinearities. In this paper we consider the case of M2m−2>0 and give a new criterion for non-isochronicity. Applying the new criterion, we also answer the open question for some cases in which some terms of odd degree are included.  相似文献
