Abstract— In this study measurements are reported that were carried out between August 1983 and December 1985 on the solar middle ultraviolet radiation (UVB-280-320 nm) in Kuwait (29.5°N). These measurements are based primarily on polysulfone film detectors. Comparative measurements were also made on a Robertson-Berger meter and a spectroradiometer. The results reported include the daily variation of the solar UVB between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon over the year, the diurnal variation, as well as the amount of UVB as a function of the receiving angle with the horizontal.
Based on these data the polysulfone films were found to be reliable and inexpensive detectors, giving results similar to those of the R-B meter. The diurnal variation of the solar UVB was found to vary as sin2q, where q is an angle that corresponds to the time since sunrise compared to the sunrise-sunset interval times 180. An empirical equation is developed that gives the maximum UVB as a function of the time of day and day of year. A correlation is determined of the polysulfone readings with the spectroradiometric and the R-B meter measurements. The solar insolation was found to be independent of the receiving angle with the horizontal in the winter months and develops into a cosine dependence in the summer months.  相似文献

Measurements of solar ultraviolet radiation (<320 nm) have been made with polysulphone film at a temperate and a tropical site and compared mean monthly values of the fraction of ultraviolet in solar radiation are calculated which allow an estimate of ultraviolet dose to be made from a knowledge of total solar radiation. While the data demonstrate the marked effect of sun elevation on the ultraviolet fraction of solar radiation they also indicate the effect of seasonal variation in the thickness of the ozone layer above the temperate site.It is also shown that whereas sunlight makes by far the major contribution to total solar radiation, skylight is of prime importance as regards ultraviolet radiation.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr were exposed in two outdoor experiments, ranging in duration from 52 to 137 days, to spectral treatments: (1) natural sunlight (=present ambient UVB level), (2) solar radiation supplemented with enhanced UVB radiation from lamps simulating 20% or 8% stratospheric ozone loss or (3) UVB-depleted sunlight achieved by screening with Mylar-D film. The growth, condition and immune function of the salmon were quantified after treatments. Exposure to enhanced UVB radiation retarded growth, and decreased hematocrit value and plasma protein concentration. Further, enhanced UVB radiation affected plasma immunoglobulin concentration. The results demonstrate that juvenile Atlantic salmon are not able to fully adapt to increased ambient UVB levels in long-term exposures, and the interference with immune system function suggests a negative effect of UVB on disease resistance in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

A COMPARISON OF DOSIMETERS USED FOR SOLAR ULTRAVIOLET RADIOMETRY   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Radiometric measurements of terrestrial sunlight using three different types of broad-band dosimeters were compared with equivalent integrated quantities obtained from simultaneous spectroradiometric measurements. Measurements were made at Durham, UK (55 degrees N) during one day in mid-summer and one day in the autumn. By this means it was possible to encompass a wide range of ultraviolet irradiances. There was close agreement between UV-A irradiance measured using a broad-band radiometer and determined spectroradiometrically over the whole range of irradiances when allowance was made for the spectral sensitivity of the UV-A radiometer. The agreement between erythemally-effective irradiance determined spectroradiometrically and the response of a Robertson-Berger meter showed some non-linearity due to the mismatch between the erythema action spectrum and spectral response of the sensor. There was a similar disparity in agreement between erythemally-effective dose determined spectroradiometrically and the response of polysulphone film for similar reasons. Nevertheless it is concluded that if these latter two dosimeters are calibrated using sunlight, or a solar simulator, as the source, they can yield data which are sufficiently reliable for many applications.  相似文献

The optical properties of the waters of five different stations, three located in the Messina Strait and two near the Strait (open sea), were analysed. Direct spectral measurements of the downward solar irradiance (290 - 800 nm) at different depths (0.5 m, 7 m, 10 m, 13 m, 20 m) were made using a cosine sensor connected to a spectroradiometer. Water samples were collected in the surface layer and their absorption spectra were analysed. The natural fluorescence profiles, along the water column, were determined using a fluorometer (SBE 911plus - Sea Teach). The spectral attenuation coefficient (K(lambda)), the variation of K(lambda) in different wavelength ranges (deltaK(deltalambda)), the wavelength corresponding to minimum value of K(lambda), the spectral depths of penetration of both 1% and 10% of the sub-surface irradiance values (P(lambda)), the depths of 1% of penetration of UVB, UVA and PAR, the depth ranges of the maxim concentration of Chl a and superficial CDOM were measured at each station. The maximum solar UVB penetration was about 65% of the photic zone and the maximum UVA penetration was nearly 100% (data of the Ionic sea station). Thus, a large part of the photic zone was exposed to UV radiation sufficient to cause a possible reduction in the photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton. The spectral penetration of solar radiation, especially UVB radiation, was significantly different in the three stations of the Strait with respect to the two stations studied in the open sea. This shows that variations in the spectral attenuation along the water column can be used as an indicator of properties of the water body.  相似文献

The spectral properties of selected UV-blocking and UV-transmitting covering materials were characterized by means of a UV-VIS spectroradiometer or a UV-VIS spectrometer to provide researchers and growers with guidelines for selecting suitable materials for use in studying the effects of ambient solar UV radiation on the production of tomatoes and other high-value crops in high tunnels. A survey was made of a wide range of plastic covering materials to identify commercially available products that had the desired characteristics of transmitting high levels of photosynthetically active radiation and of being stable under ambient solar UV radiation. The study was focused on evaluating films that either blocked or transmitted UV wavelengths below 380 nm to determine comparative growth, yield and market quality and to provide a tool for integrated pest management. Based on this survey, two contrasting covering materials of similar thickness (0.152 mm) and durability (4-year polyethylene), one a UV-blocking film and the other a UV-transmitting film, were selected and used to cover two high tunnels at Beltsville, MD. Spectroradiometric measurements were made to determine comparative spectral irradiance in these two high tunnels covered with these materials and under ambient solar UV radiation. Comparative measurements were also made of selected glass and plastic materials that have been used in UV exclusion studies.  相似文献

This study determined the sensitivity of vaccinia virus, an orthopox virus commonly used as a surrogate for variola virus (etiological agent of smallpox), exposed to UVB radiation emitted by a solar simulator, or to direct natural sunlight. The data obtained indicate that: (1) the virucidal effect of natural sunlight can be mimicked adequately by an artificial light source with similar spectral characteristics in the UVB, (2) viral sensitivity to UVB or to solar radiation can be correlated with experimental data previously obtained with UVC, (3) the correlation factor between virus inactivation by solar radiation (measured at 300 ± 5 nm) and by UVC (254 nm) is between 33 and 60, and (4) the sensitivity of viruses either dry on glass surfaces or in liquid suspension is similar when in the presence of similar amounts of cellular debris and growth media. The findings reported in this study should assist in estimating the threat posed by the persistence of virus during epidemics or after an accidental or intentional release.  相似文献

Doses of erythemally weighted irradiances derived from polysulphone (PS) and electronic ultraviolet (EUV) dosimeters have been compared with measurements obtained using a reference spectroradiometer. PS dosimeters showed mean absolute deviations of 26% with a maximum deviation of 44%, the calibrated EUV dosimeters showed mean absolute deviations of 15% (maximum 33%) around noon during several test days in the northern hemisphere autumn. In the case of EUV dosimeters, measurements with various cut-off filters showed that part of the deviation from the CIE erythema action spectrum was due to a small, but significant sensitivity to visible radiation that varies between devices and which may be avoided by careful preselection. Usually the method of calibrating UV sensors by direct comparison to a reference instrument leads to reliable results. However, in some circumstances the quality of measurements made with simple sensors may be over-estimated. In the extreme case, a simple pyranometer can be used as a UV instrument, providing acceptable results for cloudless skies, but very poor results under cloudy conditions. It is concluded that while UV dosimeters are useful for their design purpose, namely to estimate personal UV exposures, they should not be regarded as an inexpensive replacement for meteorological grade instruments.  相似文献

Abstract— A meter for measuring the skin sunburn effectiveness of a light source is being used in an extensive network to provide solar data for correlation to skin cancer incidence. The solar radiation measured also affects a wide variety of organisms. The intensity of this band of radiation is also strongly affected by ozone concentration so that the output correlates with ozone thickness.
The meter spectral response is essentially the excitation spectrum of magnesium tungstate phosphor which is similar to the erythema action spectrum (EAS). In addition to the waterproofed, dose reading embodiment, a cheaper, easily transportable, batteryless, intensity reading meter with the same spectral response has been developed.
The deviation of any sunburn meter from the ideal erythema action spectrum can be calculated by convolution of a series of solar spectra against each of the two response spectra. Plotting the change in output against the change in input results in straight lines. Either log-log coordinates are required, or, as is done here, decibels can be used on linear coordinates. The angle between the straight lines is taken as the error. An error angle of 6.5° is calculated for the present meter.  相似文献

The combination of salt water baths and solar radiation is known as an effective treatment for patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. To determine whether increased susceptibility to UVB radiation may contribute to this therapeutic effect we have studied the effect of bathing the skin in salt water prior to UVB irradiation. Twelve subjects were phototested on the volar aspects of their forearms with increasing doses of UVB radiation. One forearm was exposed to 5% salt water prior to irradiation. The minimal erythema dose (MED) was determined and the erythema index and skin pigmentation were assessed by photometric measurement. The combination of salt water bath and irradiation yielded a significant decrease of the MED when compared to UVB alone (median 90 mJ/cm2 vs 130 mJ/cm2, P < 0.01). Analysis of variance showed a significant influence of salt water bath on erythema (P < 0.05) but not on skin pigmentation. Within the MED test area the erythema index of the salt water exposed forearms was elevated significantly (P < 0.05) while skin pigmentation was not affected. Thus, bathing the skin in salt water leads to a decreased threshold level for the elicitation of UVB-induced erythema and a selective increase of the erythemal response. This sensitization to the effects of shortwave UVB radiation may increase immunosuppressive effects of UVB radiation and may lead to an increased efficacy of UVB phototherapy. However, there is also an increased sunburn risk when salt water baths are followed by exposure to UV radiation.  相似文献

Abstract—
We have designed, developed, and field evaluated a two-part personal dosimeter for estimating ocular exposure to visible and ultraviolet radiation. The detector head is compact enough to be mounted on the bow of eyeglass frames, and the recorder is small enough to be carried in a shirt pocket. The detector head consists of a silicon photodiode with filter (Schott glass GG400) and diffuser for visible light measurements and a polysulphone film badge for ultraviolet-B (UVB, 290–320 nm) measurements. The measurements correspond well to those obtained using ambient monitors and should be useful for studies of ocular UVB exposure.  相似文献

Spectral UV irradiance on vertical surfaces: a case study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The UV spectral irradiance on horizontal and vertically oriented surfaces was measured throughout a cloudless day (18 July 1995) at Izana station, Tenerife, using a Bentham DTM300 spectroradiometer scanning from 290 to 500 nm in steps of 5 nm. Results show that irradiance measured on a horizontal surface is not proportional to irradiance on a vertical surface. The relation between the two depends upon orientation of the vertical surface, zenith angle and wavelength. At short UVB wavelengths surfaces directed toward the solar azimuth received their maximum irradiances much closer to solar noon than the maxima for longer wavelengths. Some vertical surfaces also received significantly more irradiance than the horizontal surface at long wavelengths during all but the central hours of the day, while at short wavelengths all vertical irradiances were less than the horizontal except for the measurements at the extreme ends of the day. Erythemally effective radiation followed the diurnal pattern of irradiations for short UVB wavelengths.  相似文献

Abstract— A radiative transfer model is used to study the effect of stratospheric ozone depletion and tropospheric pollution on UVB (280-315 nm) radiation in the troposphere at midiatitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. The difference in the vertical distribution of UVB radiation for a range of pollution conditions typical for remote clean and more polluted sites on cloudless summer days is shown. The changes in downward UVB irradiance, UVB actinic flux, DNA-weighted UV radiation and photodissociation frequency of ozone at the earth's surface are quantified in relation to stratospheric ozone depletion and typical ranges of tropospheric pollutants (ozone [O3], sulfur dioxide [SO2] and aerosols) in nonurban polluted regions. The results show that near the earth's surface, in non-urban polluted regions, an increase of tropospheric pollution, which occurred over the last 50-100 years, has cancelled the effect of an increase of UVB radiation due to stratospheric ozone depletion that has occurred since the late 1970s. The results hold for summer conditions and the decrease of UVB radiation is most pronounced in the polluted boundary layer. At higher altitudes the effect of tropospheric pollution on UVB radiation is far less. Prior to 1970 it was mainly tropospheric pollution that altered UVB radiation at the surface of the earth. In addition, since the late 1970s enhanced UVB radiation reaching the top of the troposphere, due to stratospheric ozone depletion, also had an impact on UVB levels in the troposphere.  相似文献

While solar light is indispensable for sustenance of life, excessive exposure can cause several skin-related disorders. The UV part of solar radiation, in particular, is linked to disorders ranging from mild inflammatory effects of the skin to as serious as causing several different types of cancers. Changes in lifestyle together with depletion in the atmospheric ozone layer during the last few decades have led to an increase in the incidence of skin cancer. Skin cancers consisting of basal and squamous cell carcinomas are especially linked to the UVB part of solar radiation. Reducing excessive exposure to solar radiation is desirable; however, as this approach is unavoidable, it is suggested that other novel strategies be developed to reduce the effects of solar radiation to skin. One approach to reduce the harmful effects of solar radiation is through the use of phytochemicals, an approach that is popularly known as "Photochemoprotection." In recent years many phytochemicals with potential antioxidant properties have been identified and found to be photoprotective in nature. We describe here some of the most popular phytochemicals being studied that have the potential to reduce the harmful effects associated with solar UV radiation.  相似文献

Ultraviolet-B (UVB;280–320 nm) radiation is a small but biologically significant portion of the solar spectrum reaching the earth's surface. Research interests have been fostered because UVB has been increasing in recent years due to depletion of stratospheric ozone. Ultraviolet-B that penetrates into plant tissue may damage important cellular macromolecules. Although there has been considerable research on the effects of UVB on plants, the influence of the level of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR;400–700 nm) on effects of UVB requires further definition as a prelude to studies of UVB sensitivity and defense mechanisms. Arabidopsis thaliana wildtype ecotype Landsberg erecta (LER), which is relatively insensitive to UVB, and the relatively sensitive LER-based mutant transparent testa-5 (tt5), were grown under 100 or 250 μmol m?2 s?1 PAR and then exposed to O or 7 kJ m?2 day ?1 UVBBE under these PAR levels. Plants exposed to UVB had reduced dry weight and leaf area and higher levels of UV-absorbing compounds in leaf tissue. The level of PAR did influence the effects of UVB, with the higher level of PAR prior to UVB exposure reducing sensitivity of LER to UVB. In contrast to other studies, higher PAR supplied simultaneously with UVB increased rather than decreased sensitivity of both genotypes to UVB. These results demonstrate the importance of controlling and comparing PAR levels when undertaking studies of UVB sensitivity, as effects of UVB on plants are influenced by the PAR levels plants are growing under prior to and during exposure to UVB.  相似文献

Abstract Quantifying individual exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is critical to understanding the etiology of a number of diseases including nonmelanotic and melanotic skin cancers. Measurements of personal exposure to solar UVR were made in Hobart, Tasmania in February (summer) 1991 for six different outdoor activities using UVR-sensitive polysulfone (PS) film attached at seven anatomical sites. Concurrent behavioral and environmental observations were also made. To date many studies have relied on subject recall to quantify past solar UVR exposures. To gain insight into the accuracy of subject recall the measured UVR exposures received by different subjects using the PS film were compared to those calculated from personal diaries and ambient solar UVB levels from a monitoring station. In general, when UVR exposure activities took place under close supervision, good correlations were obtained between the PS badges and the ambient measurements/diaries approach. Ultraviolet radiation exposures for the field study involving 94 subjects engaged in a number of outdoor activities are presented.  相似文献

In studies involving mice in which doses of UVA (320-400 nm) and UVB (290-320 nm) radiation were administered alone or combined sequentially, we observed a protective effect of UVA against UVB-induced erythema/edema and systemic suppression of contact hypersensitivity. The UVA immunoprotection was mediated by the induction of the stress enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in the skin, protection of the cutaneous Th1 cytokines interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and IL-12 and inhibition of the UVB-induced expression of the Th2 cytokine IL-10. In this study, we seek evidence for an immunological waveband interaction when UVA and UVB are administered concurrently to hairless mice as occurs during sunlight exposure in humans. A series of spectra providing varying ratios of UVA/UVB were developed, with the UVA ratio increased to approximately 3.5 times the UVA component in solar simulated UV (SSUV). We report that progressively increasing the UVA component of the radiation while maintaining a constant UVB dose resulted in a reduction of both the erythema/edema reaction and the degree of systemic immunosuppression, as measured as contact hypersensitivity. The UVA-enhanced immunoprotection was abrogated in mice treated with a specific HO enzyme inhibitor. UVA-enhanced radiation also upregulated the expression of cutaneous IFN-gamma and IL-12 and inhibited expression of both IL-6 and IL-10, compared with the activity of SSUV. The results were consistent with the previously characterized mechanisms of photoprotection by the UVA waveband alone and suggest that the UVA component of solar UV may have beneficial properties for humans.  相似文献

Personal ultraviolet radiation (UVR) dosimetry is important because sunlight is the most important risk factor for skin cancer and a risk factor for some eye diseases and immunosuppression and related disorders. Integrating devices, such as polysulphone film dosimeters, are generally used. To measure the exact dose at specific times, we have developed a personal electronic UVR dosimeter that makes time-stamped measurements. It has a sensor with an erythema action spectrum response and a linear sensitivity (dose-response) with no offset. The sensor has cosine response, and the dosimeter can cope with environmental conditions such as rain, temperature and dirt. It can be programmed to measure with different time intervals and save the average of a specified number of measurements in the memory that can store 32 000 time-stamped measurements. It is small (36 x 28 x 13 mm), weighs 14 g and can work for 4 months without maintenance. It is worn on the wrist, is equipped with a watch showing the time and may thus be used in large-scale studies. The sensitivity can change by 10% due to temperature changes from -5 to 40 degrees C. The UVR dosimeter sensitivity is 0.09 standard erythema doses (SED)/h and the difference in total received dose during 7 days between a Solar Light 501 UV-Biometer (186 SED) and our UVR dosimeter was 3% and the median difference in daily total dose was 2.2%. The dosimeter provides unique possibilities. Examples of personal UVR measurements, data calculations and how they can be interpreted are given.  相似文献

Daily values of solar global ultraviolet (UV) B and UVA irradiation as well as erythemal irradiation have been parameterized to be estimated from pyranometer measurements of daily global and diffuse irradiation as well as from atmospheric column ozone. Data recorded at the Meteorological Observatory Potsdam (52 degrees N, 107 m asl) in Germany over the time period 1997-2000 have been used to derive sets of regression coefficients. The validation of the method against independent data sets of measured UV irradiation shows that the parameterization provides a gain of information for UVB, UVA and erythemal irradiation referring to their averages. A comparison between parameterized daily UV irradiation and independent values of UV irradiation measured at a mountain station in southern Germany (Meteorological Observatory Hohenpeissenberg at 48 degrees N, 977 m asl) indicates that the parameterization also holds even under completely different climatic conditions. On a long-term average (1953-2000), parameterized annual UV irradiation values are 15% and 21% higher for UVA and UVB, respectively, at Hohenpeissenberg than they are at Potsdam. Daily global and diffuse irradiation measured at 28 weather stations of the Deutscher Wetterdienst German Radiation Network and grid values of column ozone from the EPTOMS satellite experiment served as inputs to calculate the estimates of the spatial distribution of daily and annual values of UV irradiation across Germany. Using daily values of global and diffuse irradiation recorded at Potsdam since 1937 as well as atmospheric column ozone measured since 1964 at the same site, estimates of daily and annual UV irradiation have been derived for this site over the period from 1937 through 2000, which include the effects of changes in cloudiness, in aerosols and, at least for the period of ozone measurements from 1964 to 2000, in atmospheric ozone. It is shown that the extremely low ozone values observed mainly after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 have substantially enhanced UVB irradiation in the first half of the 1990s. According to the measurements and calculations, the nonlinear long-term changes observed between 1968 and 2000 amount to +4%, ..., +5% for annual global irradiation and UVA irradiation mainly because of changing cloudiness and + 14%, ..., +15% for UVB and erythemal irradiation because of both changing cloudiness and decreasing column ozone. At the mountain site, Hohenpeissenberg, measured global irradiation and parameterized UVA irradiation decreased during the same time period by -3%, ..., -4%, probably because of the enhanced occurrence and increasing optical thickness of clouds, whereas UVB and erythemal irradiation derived by the parameterization have increased by +3%, ..., +4% because of the combined effect of clouds and decreasing ozone. The parameterizations described here should be applicable to other regions with similar atmospheric and geographic conditions, whereas for regions with significantly different climatic conditions, such as high mountainous areas and arctic or tropical regions, the representativeness of the regression coefficients would have to be approved. It is emphasized here that parameterizations, as the one described in this article, cannot replace measurements of solar UV radiation, but they can use existing measurements of solar global and diffuse radiation as well as data on atmospheric ozone to provide estimates of UV irradiation in regions and over time periods for which UV measurements are not available.  相似文献
