We analyse the “Einstein box” thought experiment and the definition of the momentum of light inside matter. We stress the importance of the total energy-momentum tensor of the closed system (electromagnetic field plus material medium) and derive in detail the relativistic expressions for the Abraham and Minkowski momenta, together with the corresponding balance equations for an isotropic and homogeneous medium. We identify some assumptions hidden in the Einstein box argument, which make it weaker than it is usually recognized. In particular, we show that the Abraham momentum is not uniquely selected as the momentum of light in this case.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a coupled system of equations on oriented compact 4-manifolds which we call the Bach–Merkulov equations. These equations can be thought of as the conformally invariant version of the classical Einstein–Maxwell equations. Inspired by the work of C. LeBrun on Einstein–Maxwell equations on compact Kähler surfaces, we give a variational characterization of solutions to Bach–Merkulov equations as critical points of the Weyl functional. We also show that extremal Kähler metrics are solutions to these equations, although, contrary to the Einstein–Maxwell analogue, they are not necessarily minimizers of the Weyl functional. We illustrate this phenomenon by studying the Calabi action on Hirzebruch surfaces.  相似文献

In the paper [M. Akbar and R.G. Cai, Commun. Theor. Phys. 45 (2006) 95], a complete classification is provided with at least one component of the vector field V is zero. In this paper, I consider the vector field V with all non-zero components and the static space times with maximal symmetric transverse spaces are classified according to their Ricci collineations. These are investigated for non-degenerate Ricci tensor det R ≠0. It turns out that the only collineations admitted by these spaces can be ten, seven, six or four. It also covers our previous results as a spacial case. Some new metrics admitting proper Ricci collineations are also investigated.  相似文献

We study conformal vector fields on space-times which in addition are compatible with the Ricci tensor (so-called conformal Ricci collineations). In the case of Einstein metrics any conformal vector field is automatically a Ricci collineation as well. For Riemannian manifolds, conformal Ricci collineation were called concircular vector fields and studied in the relationship with the geometry of geodesic circles. Here we obtain a partial classification of space-times carrying proper conformal Ricci collineations. There are examples which are not Einstein metrics.  相似文献

A complete classification of static space times with maximal symmetric transverse spaces is provided, according to their Ricci collineations. The classification is made when one component of Ricci collineation vector field V is non-zero (cases 1~4), two components of V are non-zero (cases 5~10), and three components of V are non-zero (cases 11~14), respectivily. Both non-degenerate (det Rab ≠0) as well as the degenerate (det Rab=0) cases are discussed and some new metrics are found.  相似文献

We present the result of the analysis of the GREAT (Galileo gravitational Redshift test with Eccentric sATellites) experiment. An elliptic orbit induces a periodic modulation of the fractional frequency difference between a ground clock and the satellite clock, partly due to the gravitational redshift, while the good stability of Galileo clocks allows one to test this periodic modulation to a high level of accuracy. GSAT0201 and GSAT0202, with their large eccentricity and on-board H-maser clocks, are perfect candidates to perform this test. Satellite laser ranging data allows us to partly decorrelate the orbit perturbations from the clock errors. By analyzing several years of Galileo tracking data, we have been able to improve the Gravity probe A test (1976) of the gravitational redshift by a factor of 5.6, providing, to our knowledge, the first reported improvement since more than 40 years.  相似文献

We investigate the Einstein field equations corresponding to the Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou form for an axisymmetric rotating field by using the classical symmetry method. Using the invafiance group properties of the governing system of partial differential equations (PDEs) and admitting a Lie group of point transformations with commuting infinitesimal generators, we obtain exact solutions to the system of PDEs describing the Einstein field equations. Some appropriate canonical variables are characterized that transform the equations at hand to an equivalent system of ordinary differential equations and some physically important analytic solutions of field equations are constructed. Also, the class of axially symmetric solutions of Einstein field equations including the Papapetrou solution as a particular case has been found.  相似文献

In this paper we develop an integral formula involving the Ricci and scalar curvatures of a compact spacelike hypersurface M in a spacetime equipped with a timelike closed conformal vector field K (in short, conformally stationary-closed spacetime), and we apply it, when is Einstein, in order to establish sufficient conditions for M to be a leaf of the foliation determined by K and to obtain some non-existence results. The simplest non-trivial solutions of WDVV equations are An-and Bn-potentials, which describe metrics of Saito on spaces of versal deformation of An-and Bn-singularities. These are some polynomials, which were known for n≤4. In this paper, we find the potentials for all An-and Bn-singularities.
