We outline a statistical-mechanical theory of granular materials. Stress propagation and force fluctuations in static granular media are still poorly understood. We develop the statistical-mechanical theory that delivers the fundamental equations of stress equilibrium. The formalism is based on the assumptions that grains are rigid, cohesionless, and that friction is perfect. Since grains are assumed perfectly rigid, no strain or displacement field can enter the equations for static equilibrium of the stress field. The complete system of equations for the stress tensor is derived from the equations of intergranular force and torque balance, given the geometric specification of the material. These new constitutive equations are indeed fundamental and are based on relations between various components of the stress tensor within the material, and depend on the topology of the granular packing. The problem of incorporating into the formalism the "no tensile forces" constraint is considered. The compactivity concept is reviewed. We discuss the relation between the concept of compactivity and the problem of stress transmission. (c) 1999 American Institute of Physics.  相似文献

When submitted to gentle mechanical taps a granular packing slowly compacts until it reaches a stationary state that depends on the tap characteristics. The properties of such stationary states are experimentally investigated. The influence of the initial state, taps properties and tapping protocol are studied. The compactivity of the packings is determinated. Our results strongly support the idea that the stationary states are genuine thermodynamic states.  相似文献

The nature of randomness in disordered packings of frictional and frictionless spheres is investigated using theory and simulations of identical spherical grains. The entropy of the packings is defined through the force and volume ensemble of jammed matter and this is shown to be difficult to calculate analytically. A mesoscopic ensemble of isostatic states is then utilized in an effort to predict the entropy through the definition of a volume function that is dependent on the coordination number. Equations of state are obtained relating entropy, volume fraction and compactivity characterizing the different states of jammed matter, and elucidating the phase diagram for jammed granular matter. Analytical calculations are compared to numerical simulations using volume fluctuation analysis and graph theoretical methods, with reasonable agreement. The entropy of the jammed system reveals that random loose packings are more disordered than random close packings, allowing for an unambiguous interpretation of both limits. Ensemble calculations show that the entropy vanishes at random close packing (RCP), while numerical simulations show that a finite entropy remains in the microscopic states at RCP. The notion of a negative compactivity, which explores states with volume fractions below those achievable by existing simulation protocols, is also explored, expanding the equations of state. The mesoscopic theory reproduces the simulations results in shape well, though a difference in magnitude implies that the entire entropy of the packing may not be captured by the methods presented herein. We discuss possible extensions to the present mesoscopic approach describing packings from random loose packing (RLP) to RCP to the ordered branch of the equation of state in an effort to understand the entropy of jammed matter in the full range of densities from RLP to face-centered cubic (FCC) packing.  相似文献

The present paper develops a Statistical Mechanics approach to the inherent states of glassy systems and granular materials by following the original ideas proposed by Edwards for granular media. We consider three lattice models (a diluted spin glass, a system of hard spheres under gravity and a hard-spheres binary mixture under gravity) introduced to describe glassy and granular systems. They are evolved using a “tap dynamics” analogous to that of experiments on granular media. We show that the asymptotic states reached in such a dynamics are not dependent on the particular sample history and are characterized by a few thermodynamical parameters. We assume that under stationarity these systems are distributed in their inherent states satisfying the principle of maximum entropy. This leads to a generalized Gibbs distribution characterized by new “thermodynamical” parameters, called “configurational temperatures” (related to Edwards compactivity for granular materials). Finally, we show by Monte Carlo calculations that the average of macroscopic quantities over the tap dynamics and over such distribution indeed coincide. In particular, in the diluted spin glass and in the system of hard spheres under gravity, the asymptotic states reached by the system are found to be described by a single “configurational temperature”. Whereas in the hard-spheres binary mixture under gravity the asymptotic states reached by the system are found to be described by two thermodynamic parameters, coinciding with the two configurational temperatures which characterize the distribution among the inherent states when the principle of maximum entropy is satisfied under the constraint that the energies of the two species are independently fixed. The problem of finding the most efficient way to pack spheres has an illustrious history, dating back to the crystalline arrays conjectured by Kepler and the random geometries explored by Bernal in the 1960s. This problem finds applications spanning from the mathematician’s pencil, the processing of granular materials, the jamming and glass transitions, all the way to fruit packing in every grocery. There are presently numerous experiments showing that the loosest way to pack spheres gives a density of ∼55% (named random loose packing, RLP) while filling all the loose voids results in a maximum density of ∼63%-64% (named random close packing, RCP). While those values seem robustly true, to this date there is no well-accepted physical explanation or theoretical prediction for them. Here we develop a common framework for understanding the random packings of monodisperse hard spheres whose limits can be interpreted as the experimentally observed RLP and RCP. The reason for these limits arises from a statistical picture of jammed states in which the RCP can be interpreted as the ground state of the ensemble of jammed matter with zero compactivity, while the RLP arises in the infinite compactivity limit. We combine an extended statistical mechanics approach ‘a la Edwards’ (where the role traditionally played by the energy and temperature in thermal systems is substituted by the volume and compactivity) with a constraint on mechanical stability imposed by the isostatic condition. We show how such approaches can bring results that can be compared to experiments and allow for an exploitation of the statistical mechanics framework. The key result is the use of a relation between the local Voronoi volumes of the constituent grains (denoted the volume function) and the number of neighbors in contact that permits us to simply combine the two approaches to develop a theory of volume fluctuations in jammed matter. Ultimately, our results lead to a phase diagram that provides a unifying view of the disordered hard sphere packing problem and further sheds light on a diverse spectrum of data, including the RLP state. Theoretical results are well reproduced by numerical simulations that confirm the essential role played by friction in determining both the RLP and RCP limits. The RLP values depend on friction, explaining why varied experimental results can be obtained.  相似文献

We present extensive computational results for the effective temperature, defined by the fluctuation-dissipation relation between the mean square displacement and the average displacement of grains, under the action of a weak, external perturbation, of a sheared, bi-disperse granular packing of compressible spheres. We study the dependence of this parameter on the shear rate and volume fractions, the type of particle and the observable in the fluctuation-dissipation relation. We find the same temperature for different tracer particles in the system. The temperature becomes independent on the shear rate for slow enough shear suggesting that it is the effective temperature of the jammed packing. However, we also show that the agreement of the effective temperature for different observables is only approximate, for very long times, suggesting that this defintion may not capture the full thermodynamics of the system. On the other hand, we find good agreement between the dynamical effective temperature and a compactivity calculated assuming that all jammed states are equiprobable. Therefore, this definition of temperature may capture an instance of the ergodic hypothesis for granular materials as proposed by theoretical formalisms for jamming. Finally, our simulations indicate that the average shear stress and apparent shear viscosity follow the usual relation with the shear rate for complex fluids. Our results show that the application of shear induces jamming in packings whose particles interact by tangential forces.  相似文献

Randomly packing spheres of equal size into a container consistently results in a static configuration with a density of ∼64%. The ubiquity of random close packing (RCP) rather than the optimal crystalline array at 74% begs the question of the physical law behind this empirically deduced state. Indeed, there is no signature of any macroscopic quantity with a discontinuity associated with the observed packing limit. Here we show that RCP can be interpreted as a manifestation of a thermodynamic singularity, which defines it as the “freezing point” in a first-order phase transition between ordered and disordered packing phases. Despite the athermal nature of granular matter, we show the thermodynamic character of the transition in that it is accompanied by sharp discontinuities in volume and entropy. This occurs at a critical compactivity, which is the intensive variable that plays the role of temperature in granular matter. Our results predict the experimental conditions necessary for the formation of a jammed crystal by calculating an analogue of the “entropy of fusion”. This approach is useful since it maps out-of-equilibrium problems in complex systems onto simpler established frameworks in statistical mechanics.  相似文献

We discuss a theoretical approach to structural glasses as they happen in real situations. Older ideas based on ‘configurational entropy’, on ‘fictive temperatures’ and on Edwards' ‘compactivity’ are sharpened and unified in an out of equilibrium context. The picture is such that it may be supported or disproved by an experimental test, which we describe.  相似文献

We investigate the nature of randomness in disordered packings of frictional spheres. We calculate the entropy of 3D packings through the force and volume ensemble of jammed matter, a mesoscopic ensemble and numerical simulations using volume fluctuation analysis and graph theoretical methods. Equations of state are obtained relating entropy, volume fraction and compactivity characterizing the different states of jammed matter. At the mesoscopic level the entropy vanishes at random close packing, while the microscopic states contribute to a finite entropy. The entropy of the jammed system reveals that the random loose packings are more disordered than random close packings, allowing for an unambiguous interpretation of both limits.  相似文献

General conservation equations are derived for 2D dense granular flows from the Euler equation within the Boussinesq approximation. In steady flows, the 2D fields of granular temperature, vorticity and stream function are shown to be encoded in two scalar functions only. We checked such prediction on steady surface flows in a rotating drum simulated through the Non-Smooth Contact Dynamics method even though granular flows are dissipative and therefore not necessarily compatible with Euler equation. Finally, we briefly discuss some possible ways to predict theoretically these two functions using statistical mechanics.  相似文献

We investigate the existence of random close and random loose packing limits in two-dimensional packings of monodisperse hard disks. A statistical mechanics approach-based on several approximations to predict the probability distribution of volumes-suggests the existence of the limiting densities of the jammed packings according to their coordination number and compactivity. This result has implications for the understanding of disordered states in the disk packing problem as well as the existence of a putative glass transition in two-dimensional systems.  相似文献

The dynamics of a bidimensional dense granular packing under cyclic shear is experimentally investigated close to the jamming transition. Measurement of multipoint correlation functions are produced. The self-intermediate scattering function, displaying slower than exponential relaxation, suggests dynamic heterogeneity. Further analysis of four point correlation functions reveal that the grain relaxations are strongly correlated and spatially heterogeneous, especially at the time scale of the collective rearrangements. Finally, a dynamical correlation length is extracted from a spatiotemporal pattern of mobility. Our experimental results open the way to a systematic study of dynamic correlation functions in granular materials.  相似文献

A granular clock is observed in a vertically vibrated compartmentalized granular gas composed of two types of grains with the same size. The dynamics of the clock is studied in terms of an unstable evaporation or condensation model for the granular gas. In this model, the temperatures of the two types of grains are considered to be different, and they are functions of the composition of the gas. Oscillations in the system are driven by the asymmetric collisions properties between the two types of grains. Both our experiments and model show that the transition of the system from a homogeneous state to an oscillatory state is via a Hopf bifurcation.  相似文献

We study the interface fluctuations of a granular jet falling under gravity and show that for small scales they are the analog of the thermally induced capillary waves. Experimental results from radial height and velocity fluctuations, static correlation functions and capillary ripple velocities allow us to estimate a granular surface tension. The ultralow interfacial tensions measured (of the order of 100 microN/m) can be rationalized using a simple model.  相似文献

An adsorption-desorption (or parking-lot) model can reproduce qualitatively the densification kinetics and other features of a weakly vibrated granular material. Here we study the the two-time correlation and response functions of the model and demonstrate that their behavior is consistent with recently observed memory effects in granular materials. Although the densification kinetics and hysteresis are robust properties, we show that the aging behavior of the adsorption-desorption model is different from other models of granular compaction. We propose an experimental test to distinguish the possible aging behaviors. Received 26 February 2001  相似文献

Numerical simulations are employed to consider the problem of determining the granular temperatures of the species of a homogeneous heated granular mixture with a power-law size distribution. The partial granular temperature ratios are studied as functions of the fractal dimension D, the restitution coefficient e, the rescaled viscosity time, the average occupied area fraction φ, the total particle number N and the number fraction. Different species of particles in a power-law system typically do not have the same mean kinetic energy, namely the granular temperature. It is found that the extent of nonequipartition of kinetic energy is determined by the fractal dimension D, the restitution coefficient e and the rescaled viscosity time, while is insensitive to the total particle number N , the area fraction φ and the number fraction.  相似文献

The optical method of dynamic photoelasticity is used to visualize the load transfer profiles due to explosive loading in granular aggregates. The granular media are simulated by using arrays of disks fabricated from a brittle polyester material—Homalite 100. Attention is focused on the effect of microstructure or the geometrical packing of the grains on the wave propagation phenomena. The experimental data are analyzed to obtain the stress wave attenuation, wave velocities and contact stresses as a function of time along various directions in the assembly of grains. Dynamic load transfer functions are developed to predict dynamic contact loads in any systematic or random assembly of grains for any given loading. The predicted results are compared with the experimental data. The effect of local inhomogeneities on the wave propagation phenomena is also shown.  相似文献

The correlation properties of films consisting of granular structures with granules smaller than 6 nm prepared by the laser electrodispersion method are investigated. The correlation functions of the nanoparticle distribution on a transparent substrate are calculated from the angular structure of scattered radiation using the single-scattering approximation, as well as from the data of atomic force microscopy for copper, nickel, and palladium structures with different packing density. The size of coarse particles in nanostructures is estimated.  相似文献

Using particle simulations of the uniform shear flow of a rough dilute granular gas, we show that the translational and rotational velocities are strongly correlated in direction, but there is no orientational correlation-induced singularity at perfectly smooth (beta=-1) and rough (beta=1) limits for elastic collisions (e=1); both the translational and rotational velocity distribution functions remain close to a Gaussian for these two limiting cases. Away from these two limits, the orientational as well as spatial velocity correlations are responsible for the emergence of non-Gaussian high-velocity tails. The tails of both distribution functions follow stretched exponentials, with the exponents depending on normal (e) and tangential (beta) restitution coefficients.  相似文献
