The results of statistical treatment of experimental data on the physicomechanical properties of glass-reinforced plastics, based on alkali-free, aluminoborosilicate glass fibers (composition NS-55/6) with paraffin as lubricant and epoxyphenolbutyral composition EFB-4, obtained from tensile tests on flat specimens prepared by "wet" winding on a mandrel, are given. A previously developed [4] general method of solving the nonlinear (in the statistical sense) boundary value problem of the theory of elasticity is used to determine the macroscopic moduli of elasticity of randomly reinforced plastics whose structure is simulated by a two-phase microinhomogeneous medium. The macroscopic modulus is represented in the form of a series composed of the sum of the mean value of the modulus and a sequence of corrections that take into account the central moments of the distribution of elastic constants. The limits of convergence of this series are established. The basic relations of the theory of anisotropic creep of unidirectional glass-reinforced plastics (GRPs) in a three-dimensional stress state are found using a model of a material with inhomogeneous structure and the rheological properties of the resin. These relations are suitable for investigating the stress state of GRPs for resin stresses not exceeding certain values. The author examines the problem of the state of stress of glass-reinforced strip under short-time loading, when viscoelastic effects are unimportant. The proposed model is composed of a system of parallel identical glass fibers the space between which is filled with a matrix—resin. The change in the elastic constants is found as a function of the volume content of glass reinforcing. The dependence of the parameters of the static stress-strain and creep diagrams on the gage width and length of the specimen has been experimentally investigated. Other technical factors — the accuracy with which the specimen is mounted in the grips or wedges, the transverse strain distribution, and Saint Vanant's principle — are also considered. It is proposed to employ a variable winding tension designed to give a required initial stress distribution. The program is constructed on the basis of solutions describing the loss of tension associated with winding and the softening of the resin during heat treatment. The problems are solved in the elastic formulation. Nonlinear damage accumulation rules are usually constructed on the basis of certain hypotheses derived from semiempirical considerations. A method is proposed for constructing an averaged nonlinear damage accumulation rule based on the direct utilization of the results of static fatigue tests on glass-reinforced plastic specimens. The elastic and strength characteristics of glass-reinforced plastics based on three-dimensional multilayer glass fabrics with high-modulus, hollow and solid glass fibers have been studied. The effectiveness of using high-modulus and hollow fibers in these composites is estimated. The authors consider the effect of the low shear strength and shear stiffness of oriented glass-reinforced plastics (GRP) on the stress distribution and type of failure in bending. On the basis of relations obtained in [1] it is shown that the effect of shears on the magnitude and law of distribution of the normal and shear stresses is important only for very short beams made of materials with a low shear stiffness. An experimental study of the nature of failure in bending has revealed that the chief cause of extension of the region of shear failure of oriented GRP is the low shear strength of the material, and has made it possible to establish the limits of this region for three typical materials. Data are presented on the mechanical characteristics of oligoester maleates copolymerized with styrene and the corresponding glass-reinforced plastics crosslinked by the thermochemical and radiation methods. The conditions determining the design of two-way glass-reinforced plastics with high compressive strength are investigated. The relations between the physicomechanical and geometric parameters of the composite are obtained in the form of a system of inequalities, satisfaction of which ensures the obtaining of a high-strength material with a given utilization factor. A theory of nonlinear elasticity of anisotropic bodies of the flow theory type is used to investigate nonlinear strains in orthotropic glass-reinforced plastics. The determination of the residual stresses in glass-reinforced plastics elements is considered. It is shown that these stresses reach appreciable values and should be taken into account in strength calculations. Quantitative data are supplied for a series of materials.
