The effects of hydrodynamic and thermal heterogeneity, for the case of variation in both the horizontal and vertical directions, on the onset of convection in a horizontal layer of a saturated porous medium uniformly heated from below, with weak vertical throughflow, are studied analytically for the case of weak heterogeneity. It is found that when the boundary conditions at the upper and lower boundaries are symmetric, the throughflow magnitude and the permeability and conductivity gradients enter the expression for the critical Rayleigh number at second order. The throughflow on its own is stabilizing but the combination of throughflow and heterogeneity may be either stabilizing or destabilizing.  相似文献

It is shown that the governing equation for the stream function of the Darcy free convection boundary layer flows past a vertical surface is invariant under arbitrary translations of the transverse coordinate y. The consequences of this basic symmetry property on the solutions corresponding to a prescribed surface temperature distribution T w (x) are investigated. It is found that starting with a “primary solution” which describes the temperature boundary layer on an impermeable surface, infinitely many “translated solutions” can be generated which form a continuous group, the “translation group” of the given primary solution. The elements of this group describe free convection boundary layer flows from permeable counterparts of the original surface with a transformed temperature distribution \({\tilde {T}_w \left( x \right)}\), when simultaneously a suitable lateral suction/injection of the fluid is applied. It turns out in this way that several exact solutions discovered during the latter few decades are in fact not basically new solutions, but translated counterparts of some formerly reported primary solutions. A few specific examples are discussed in detail.  相似文献

On the basis of a numerical simulation of convection in a horizontal fluid layer with a uniform heat source it is concluded that the convective heat flux is constant over the entire convection layer not only in the case of steady-state external conditions but also in the case of heating (cooling) of the fluid layer at a constant rate. The convective heat flux is mainly determined by the Rayleigh number and depends only slightly on the layer heating (cooling) rate.  相似文献

This article considers the problem of mixed convection stagnation-point flow towards a vertical plate embedded in a porous medium with prescribed surface heat flux. It is assumed that the free stream velocity and the surface heat flux vary linearly from the stagnation point. Using a similarity transformation, the governing system of partial differential equations is transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations, before being solved numerically by a finite-difference method. The features of the flow and the heat transfer characteristics are analyzed and discussed. It is found that dual solutions exist for both buoyancy assisting and opposing flows.  相似文献

Transient natural convection in a vertical cylinder partially filled with a porous media with heat-conducting solid walls of finite thickness in conditions of convective heat exchange with an environment has been studied numerically. The Darcy and Brinkman-extended Darcy models with Boussinesq approximation have been used to solve the flow and heat transfer in the porous region. The Oberbeck–Boussinesq equations have been used to describe the flow and heat transfer in the pure fluid region. The Beavers–Joseph empirical boundary condition is considered at the fluid–porous layer interface with the Darcy model. In the case of the Brinkman-extended Darcy model, the two regions are coupled by equating the velocity and stress components at the interface. The governing equations formulated in terms of the dimensionless stream function, vorticity, and temperature have been solved using the finite difference method. The main objective was to investigate the influence of the Darcy number $10^{-5}\le \hbox {Da}\le 10^{-3}$ , porous layer height ratio $0\le d/L\le 1$ , thermal conductivity ratio $1\le k_{1,3}\le 20$ , and dimensionless time $0\le \tau \le 1000$ on the fluid flow and heat transfer on the basis of the Darcy and non-Darcy models. Comprehensive analysis of an effect of these key parameters on the Nusselt number at the bottom wall, average temperature in the cylindrical cavity, and maximum absolute value of the stream function has been conducted.  相似文献

The radiation effect in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field on steady free convection flow with variable viscosity is investigated. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as the reciprocal of a linear function of temperature. Boundary layer equations are derived. The resulting approximate non-linear ordinary differential equations are solved linearly and nonlinearly by shooting methods. The velocity and temperature profiles are shown, and the skin friction on the plate and heat transfer coefficient are presented and discussed. The results of the present study show that in the presence of magnetic field, as the radiation parameter increases the temperature increases, but the velocity decreases.  相似文献

The problem for determining the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of convection in a horizontal porous layer with vertical throughflow is re-examined with the aim of obtaining analytical formulas applicable in the cases of weak and strong throughflow. For the case of strong throughflow an asymptotic analysis is performed.  相似文献

The effect of vertical heterogeneity of permeability, on the onset of convection in a horizontal layer of a saturated porous medium, uniformly heated from below but with a non-uniform basic temperature gradient resulting from vertical throughflow, is studied analytically using linear stability theory. It is found that, to first order, a linear variation of the reciprocal of permeability with depth has no effect on the critical value of the Rayleigh number Ra c based on the harmonic mean of the permeability, but a quadratic variation increasing in the upwards direction leads to a reduction in Ra c.  相似文献

An analytical investigation of the effect of vertical throughflow on the onset of convection in a composite porous medium consisting of two horizontal layers has been made. The cases of iso-flux and iso-temperature boundaries are both investigated. The critical Rayleigh number depends on a Péclet number $Q$ , a permeability ratio $K_{r}$ , a thermal conductivity ratio $k_{r}$ , and a depth ratio $\delta $ . For the case of small $Q$ an approximate solution is obtained, which shows that in general throughflow has a stabilizing effect whose magnitude may be increased or decreased by the heterogeneity. This solution is supplemented by an asymptotic solution valid for large $Q.$   相似文献

The Darcy free convection boundary layer flow over a vertical flat plate is considered in the presence of volumetric heat generation/absorption. In the present first part of the paper it is assumed that the heat generation/absorption takes place in a self-consistent way, the source term q ′′′S of the energy equation being an analytical function of the local temperature difference TT . In a forthcoming second part, the case of the externally controlled source terms S = S(x,y ) will be considered. It is shown that due to the presence of S, the physical equivalence of the up- and downflows gets in general broken, in the sense that the free convection flow over the upward projecting hot plate (“upflow”) and over its downward projecting cold counterpart (“downflow”) in general become physically distinct. The consequences of this circumstance are examined for different forms of S. Several analytical solutions are given. Some of them describe algebraically decaying boundary layers which can also be recovered as limiting cases of exponentially decayingones. This asymptotic phenomenon is discussed in some detail.  相似文献

The effect of vertical throughflow on the onset of convection in a rectangular box occupied by a saturated porous medium uniformly heated from below, is studied using linear stability theory. It is found that, for small values of the throughflow, the stabilizing effect of the throughflow and the stabilizing effect of the confining lateral walls of the box are approximately independent of each other.  相似文献

In this article, free convection heat transfer over a vertical cylinder with variable surface temperature distributions in a porous medium is analyzed. It is assumed that the fluid and solid phases are not in local thermal equilibrium and, therefore, a two-temperature model of heat transfer is applied. The coupled momentum and energy equations are presented and then they are transformed into ordinary differential equations. The similarity equations are solved numerically. The resulting velocity, streamlines, temperature distributions for fluid and solid phases are shown for different values of parameters entering into the problem. The calculated values of the local Nusselt numbers for both solid and fluid phases are also shown.  相似文献

This paper investigates the onset of convection in a vertical cylinder occupied by a saturated porous medium of vertically heterogeneous permeability. The flow is induced by an applied vertical temperature gradient and an imposed solute concentration gradient. The main interest of this paper is studying the effect of vertical throughflow on the onset of instability in this system. The study is performed using linear stability theory. The problem is of considerable interest for hydrological and geophysical situations.  相似文献

We present an analytical investigation of the effect of vertical throughflow on the onset of convection, induced by internal heating, in a composite porous medium consisting of two horizontal layers. If convection is induced by internal heating, the bulk of the convection occurs in the upper half of the layer where the buoyancy force is destabilizing. For the case of heterogeneous porous medium, if the permeability increases in the upward direction, or if the thermal conductivity decreases in the upward direction, instability is increased. It is also found that upward throughflow is stabilizing but a modest amount of downward throughflow is destabilizing.  相似文献

In the present work, the effect of mixed convection about vertical surfaces on the phenomenon of melting process in a fluid-saturated porous medium is analyzed on the basis of boundary layer approximations. Similarity solutions are obtained for aiding external flow. The final similarity equations are integrated numerically by use of the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. Results are reported for the flow and thermal fields in the melt region. The melting phenomenon decreases the local Nusselt number at the solid–liquid interface.  相似文献

The vertical throughflow with viscous dissipation in a horizontal porous layer is studied. The horizontal plane boundaries are assumed to be isothermal with unequal temperatures and bottom heating. A basic stationary solution of the governing equations with a uniform vertical velocity field (throughflow) is determined. The temperature field in the basic solution depends only on the vertical coordinate. Departures from the linear heat conduction profile are displayed by the temperature distribution due to the forced convection effect and to the viscous dissipation effect. A linear stability analysis of the basic solution is carried out in order to determine the conditions for the onset of convective rolls. The critical values of the wave number and of the Darcy–Rayleigh number are determined numerically by the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. It is shown that, although generally weak, the effect of viscous dissipation yields an increase of the critical value of the Darcy–Rayleigh number for downward throughflow and a decrease in the case of upward throughflow. Finally, the limiting case of a vanishing boundary temperature difference is discussed.  相似文献
