We investigate the competing effects of interlayer exchange coupling and magnetostatic coupling in the magnetic heterostructure ([Co/Pt]/NiO/[Co/Pt]) with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). This particular heterostructure is unique among coupled materials with PMA in directly exhibiting both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic coupling, oscillating between the two as a function of spacer layer thickness. By systematically tuning the coupling interactions via a wedge-shaped NiO spacer layer, we explore the energetics that dictate magnetic domain formation using high resolution magnetic force microscopy coupled with the magneto-optical Kerr effect. This technique probes the microscopic and macroscopic magnetic behavior as a continuous function of thickness and the interlayer exchange coupling, including the regions where interlayer coupling goes through zero. We see significant changes in domain structure based on the sign of coupling, and also show that magnetic domain size is directly related to the magnitude of the interlayer exchange coupling energy, which generally dominates over the magnetostatic interactions. When magnetostatic interactions become comparable to the interlayer exchange coupling, a delicate interplay between the differing energy contributions is apparent and energy scales are extracted. The results are of intense interest to the magnetic recording industry and also illustrate a relatively new avenue of undiscovered physics, primarily dealing with the delicate balance of energies in the formation of magnetic domains for coupled systems with PMA, defining limits on domain size as well as the interplay between roughness, domains and magnetic coupling.  相似文献

Interlayer exchange coupling that oscillates between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic as a function of NiO thickness has been observed in [Pt(5 A)/Co(4 A)](3)/NiO(t(NiO) A)/[Co(4 A)/Pt(5 A)](3) multilayers with out-of-plane anisotropy. The period of oscillation corresponds to approximately 2 monolayers of NiO. This oscillatory behavior is possibly attributed to the antiferromagnetic ordering in NiO. The antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling for the 11 A NiO layer shows an increase in coupling strength with increasing temperature, in agreement with the quantum interference model of Bruno for insulating spacer layers. A coexistence of exchange biasing and antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling has been observed below T=250 K.  相似文献

The magnetization reversal is studied in magnetron sputtered artificial superstructures of the form [Ni/Pt]6/Pt(x)/[Co/Pt]6 with perpendicular anisotropy, in which the [Co/Pt]6 stacks have higher coercivity than the [Ni/Pt]6. For x≥2 nm the two stacks reverse separately and exhibit characteristic stepped loops with a “plateau” in the region between the two switching fields. First-Order Reversal Curves (FORCs) reveal that the maximum coupling is obtained for x=1.5 nm. While each of the Ni/Pt and Co/Pt stacks by itself is thin enough to reverse in large domains when they are coupled, formation of maze like domains is observed. In this case some reversibility of the demagnetization curves associated with interfacial domain wall pinning appears while in the rest of the cases the reversal mechanism is based on lateral domain wall pinning with low reversibility. In the loops monitored by Extraordinary Hall Effect (EHE) measurements this “plateau” appears as a hump due to the different sign of the EHE coefficient between the [Ni/Pt]6 and [Co/Pt]6.

We report on an effect of reduced dimensionality on the magnetotransport in cobalt layers sandwiched by platinum. In a current in-plane geometry it is found that the resistivity depends on the magnetization orientation within the plane perpendicular to the current direction. The resistivity shows a symmetry adapted cos(2) dependence on the angle to the surface normal, with the maximum along the surface normal. The Co thickness dependence of the effect in Pt/Co/Pt sandwiches clearly points out that the mechanism behind this effect originates at the Co/Pt interfaces and is disparate to the texture induced geometrical size effect.  相似文献

We have studied the field-driven motion of a pair of coupled Bloch domain walls in a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy Pt/Co/Pt/Co/Pt multilayer Hall bar. The nucleation of an isolated but coincident pair of walls in the two Co layers, observed by Kerr microscopy, took place at an artificial nucleation site created by Ga+ ion irradiation. The average velocity v of the wall motion was calculated from time-resolved magnetotransport measurements at fixed driving field H, where the influence of the extraordinary Hall effect leads to the observation of voltages at the longitudinal resistance probes. We observed a good fit to the scaling relation lnvH−1/4, consistent the motion of a single 1-dimensional wall moving in a 2-dimensional disordered medium in the creep regime: the two walls are coupled together into a 1-dimensional composite object.  相似文献

We study magnetization reversal in the interlayer coupled [Pt/Co]5/Ru/[Co/Pt]5 multilayers (MLs) by means of the measurement of extraordinary Hall effect (EHE). Fitting experimental data to a simple model, we determine the interlayer coupling strength for various thicknesses of the ferromagnetic layers at a fixed Ru spacer thickness. It is found that the dependence of interlayer coupling strength on the Pt layer thickness is much stronger than the previous report in the ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic/ferromagnetic multilayers.  相似文献

We detail measurements of field-driven expansion and zero-field relaxation of magnetic mirror domains in antiferromagnetically coupled perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin Co layers. The zero-field stability of aligned ('mirror') domains in such systems results from non-homogeneous dipolar stray fields which exist in the vicinity of the domain walls. During field-driven domain expansion, we evidence a separation of the domain walls which form the mirror domain boundary. However, the walls realign, thereby reforming a mirror domain, if their final separation is below a critical distance at the end of the field pulse. This critical distance marks the point at which the effective net interaction between the walls changes from attractive to repulsive.  相似文献

The time dependences of the transfer of the magnetic moment between stable magnetic states of heterostructures with two Pt/Co/Ir/Co/Pt ferromagnetic layers with the perpendicular magnetization have been studied. Spontaneous oscillations of the macroscopic magnetization with a period of several hours are observed after switching the magnetic field to a new value. The phase portrait of the magnetic relaxation corresponds to damped oscillations. The macrospin oscillation may be due to the high nucleation rate of the reverse magnetization phase induced by the exchange and magnetic dipole interaction between the phase nucleation centers, which arise in different layers. The changes in the Zeeman energy of the system under magnetic oscillations are considered.  相似文献

We have quantitatively investigated the Hall effect in [Co, CoFe/Pt] multilayer films. The [Co, CoFe/Pt] multilayers exhibit large spontaneous Hall resistivity (ρH) and Hall angle (ρH/ρ). Even though the Hall resistivity in [Co, CoFe/Pt] multilayer films (2.7–4 × 10−7 Ω cm) is smaller than that of amorphous RE–TM alloy films which show large spontaneous Hall resistivity (<2 × 10−6 Ω cm), the Hall angle of multilayer (6–8%) is almost twice than that in amorphous rare earth–transition metal alloy films (∼3%). The Hall angle provides evidence of the effects of the exchange interaction of the Hall scattering. The exchange is between conduction electron spins and the localized spins of the transition metal. The large Hall angle of [Co, CoFe/Pt] multilayer can be considered due to the high spin polarization and high Curie temperature of Co and CoFe transition metal layers. Even though the role of interfaces and surfaces in the magnetic properties of multilayer films may dominate that of the bulk, the Hall effects in [Co, CoFe/Pt] multilayer may be mainly dominated by the bulk effect.  相似文献

[Co(30 Å)/Pt(x Å)]20 multilayers with the Pt layer thicknesses varying from 5 Å to 20 Å were characterized structurally by high angle X-ray diffraction, X-ray reflectivity, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetically by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. It is found that the structure and magnetic properties of Pt have a strong correlation with the Pt layer thickness. The 20 Å thickness Pt layer is not almost influenced by the adjacent Co layer and the nearest neighbors are dominated by Pt-Pt shells. With decreasing Pt layer thickness, the nearest neighbors are gradually dominated by Pt-Co shells and the Pt-Co intermixing regions also remarkable increase at the interfaces, especially for the 5 Å thickness Pt layer. The orbital and spin magnetic moments as well as the ratio morb/mspin all decrease systematically with increasing Pt layer thickness, indicating that the interface atoms are polarized by direct Pt-Co hybridization, but that the adjacent layers are polarized by Pt-Pt interactions.  相似文献

We theoretically and experimentally analyze the pinning of a magnetic domain wall (DW) at engineered anisotropy variations in Pt/Co/Pt strips with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. An analytical model is derived showing that a step in the anisotropy acts as an energy barrier for the DW. Quantitative measurements are performed showing that the anisotropy can be controlled by focused ion beam irradiation with Ga ions. This tool is used to experimentally study the field-induced switching of nanostrips which are locally irradiated. The boundary of the irradiated area indeed acts as a pinning barrier for the domain wall and the pinning strength increases with the anisotropy difference. Varying the thickness of the Co layer provides an additional way to tune the anisotropy, and it is shown that a thinner Co layer gives a higher starting anisotropy thereby allowing tunable DW pinning in a wider range of fields. Finally, we demonstrate that not only the anisotropy itself, but also the width of the anisotropy barrier can be tuned on the length scale of the domain wall.  相似文献

We have studied 111 and 001 oriented Co(3 Å)/Pt(18 Å) superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy via X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation. The diffraction peak shapes, for the scattering vector Q parallel to the film planes, were found to be characteristically different between these two films. For the 111 oriented sample, this broadening is characterized by a Lorentzian peak shape with a positional correlation length of the order of 50 Å. The data further indicate that the atomic correlation in the 111 sample has a long range orientational but only short range positional order.  相似文献

Exchange bias measurements of ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic (F/AF) bilayers are typically performed with the magnetization of the F layer parallel to the AF interface. We describe measurements of Co/Pt multilayers with out-of-plane magnetic easy axis that are exchange biased with CoO. Field-cooling experiments with the applied field perpendicular and parallel to the sample plane exhibit loop shifts and enhanced coercivities. Modeling and comparison to biasing of samples with planar easy axis suggests such measurements provide a way to probe the spin projections at F/AF interfaces.  相似文献

Magnetic properties of an interface between cobalt and platinum or tantalum nanolayers have been studied by the optical second-harmonic generation and nonlinear magneto-optical Kerr effect methods. It has been shown that a high sensitivity of the second-harmonic generation method makes it possible to determine the orientation of the easy magnetization axis in the plane of a polycrystalline structure without measurement of the magnetic field dependence of second-harmonic generation. The comparison of the field dependences of magnetic-field-induced second-harmonic generation with the linear magneto-optical effect indicates the difference in the processes of magnetization reversal in Co/Pt and Co/Ta interfaces and the bulk of the cobalt film. In particular, a new linear in magnetization effect has been observed in the second harmonic that is symmetry-forbidden for uniformly magnetized structures.  相似文献

Present study compares the effects of 200 MeV Ag15+ and 100 MeV O7+ ion irradiations on the structural, interfacial mixing and magnetic properties of annealed Pt/Co/Pt layers fabricated by DC magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that ion irradiations coupled with post annealing results in the formation of the face centred tetragonal L10 CoPt phase. Irradiation using 200 MeV Ag15+ ions having higher ionizing energy transfer to the film was found to be more efficient in causing structural phase transition as compared with that using 100 MeV energy O7+ ions having lower ionizing energy transfer at similar fluence. Rutherford back scattering analysis reveals the role of defect mediated inter-atomic diffusion in tailoring the alloy composition of the film irradiated by different energetic ions. A broad magnetic switching field distribution for O7+ ion irradiated films compared to Ag15+ ion irradiation was evident from the magnetic measurements. The contribution of alloy composition to switching field distribution has been discussed in details. Above results showed that the electronic energy loss and fluence dependent defects, generated by irradiation, played an important role in tuning the structural, atomic diffusion and magnetic reversal properties of Pt/Co/Pt.  相似文献
