Fourier transforms, generic vanishing theorems and polarizations of abelian varieties

The purpose of this paper is to give two applications of Fourier transforms and generic vanishing theorems: – we give a cohomological characterization of principal polarizations – we prove that if X an abelian variety and a polarization of type (1, ...,1,2), then a general pair is log canonical. Moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces

In this paper, we consider basic problems on moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces. Our main assumption is the primitivity of the associated Mukai vector. We determine the deformation types, albanese maps, Bogomolov factors and their weight 2 Hodge structures. We also discuss the deformation types of moduli spaces of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces. Secant varieties and birational geometry

We show how to use information about the equations defining secant varieties to smooth projective varieties in order to construct a natural collection of birational transformations. These were first constructed as flips in the case of curves by M. Thaddeus via Geometric Invariant Theory, and the first flip in the sequence was constructed by the author for varieties of arbitrary dimension in an earlier paper. We expose the finer structure of a second flip; again for varieties of arbitrary dimension. We also prove a result on the cubic generation of the secant variety and give some conjectures on the behavior of equations defining the higher secant varieties. Characterization of abelian varieties

Complexity of Chow varieties and number of morphisms on surfaces of general type

We provide a general estimate for the number of irreducible components of a Chow variety, the variety that parametrizes algebraic cycles of given dimension and degree contained in a projective variety. The result is then applied to obtain an upper bound for the finite number of surfaces of general type that are images of a fixed surface. Projective normality of abelian surfaces¶given by primitive line bundles

In this paper, we study projective normality of abelian surfaces, with embeddings given by ample line bundles of type (1,d). We show that if d≥ 7, the generic abelian surface is projectively normal. Received: 12 June 1998     

A stratification of Hilbert schemes by initial ideals and applications

We show that the set of the homogeneous saturated ideals with given initial ideal in a fixed term-ordering is locally closed in the Hilbert scheme, and that it is affine if the initial ideal is saturated. Then, Hilbert schemes can be stratified using these subschemes. We investigate the behaviour of this stratification with respect to some properties of the closed points. As application, we describe the singular locus of the component of Hilb^{4 z +1} _ℙ4 containing the ACM curves of degree 4. Received: 30 November 1998 / Revised version: 16 September 1999     

Towards the arithmetic degree of line bundles¶ on abelian varieties

In this paper we analyze the integral of the star-product of (n+1) Green currents associated to (n+1) global sections of an ample line bundle equipped with a translation invariant metric over an n-dimensional, polarized abelian variety. The integral is shown to equal the logarithm of the Petersson norm of a certain Siegel modular form, which is explicitly described in terms of the given data. This result can be interpreted as evaluating an archimedian height on a family of polarized abelian varieties. The key ingredient to the proof of the main formula is a dd ^c -variational formula for the integral under consideration. In the case of dimensions n=1,2,3 explicit examples in terms of classical Riemann theta functions are given. Received: 13 February 1998

Embeddings of general blowups of abelian surfaces

Blowups of algebraic surfaces polarized by tensor powers of ample line bundles were studied by Coppens [8].
