A systematic spectrophotometric study on the complexation of uranyl ions with ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is carried out. Factors influencing the sensitivity or selectivity of uranyl ascorbate are studied, and adequate elimination or control of the procedure is suggested. Results of the absorbance of uranyl ascorbate developed in HNO3, HCl, and H2SO4 acid media within the concentration range (1.0–8.0) × 10−N show a marked dependence on the nature and concentration of the acid used. The observed decrease in color intensity at higher acidities is explained on the basis of the decomposing effect of hydrogen ions on uranyl ascorbate and the complexing effect on uranyl ions. Study of the stoichiometry of uranium:ascorbic acid complex in acid medium by continuous variation and molar ratio methods indicated the formation of 1:1 and 1:2 complexes. The formation constant of the 1:1 complex as calculated by these two methods was found to be 4.8 × 104 and 5.0 × 104, respectively. Best suitable conditions for stabilizing and increasing the color intensity of uranyl ascorbate, dependent on the nature of the medium and pH of the solution, are suggested for the determination of ascorbic acid in pharmaceutical preparations using this method.

Promethazine hydrochloride forms a yellowish-green complex with platinum(IV) in sodium acetate-hydrochloric acid buffer containing copper catalyst. The complex has an absorption maximum at 406 nm with molar absorptivity 1.001 × 104 liters mol?1 cm?1. The sensitivity of the reaction is 19.5 ng/cm2 for . Beer's law is valid over the range 0.5–7.5 ppm of platinum(IV) with optimum concentration range 0.8-7.3 ppm. Continuous variations, mole ratio, and slope ratio methods indicate 1:1 composition for the complex. The effects of pH, time, temperature, order of addition of reagents, reagent concentration, and interferences from various ions are reported.

We have studied the formation of a platinum complex and developed a simple, rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of platinum in solution. The method is based on the complexation reaction of the chromogen, prochlorperazine bismethane-sulfonate (PCPMS), with platinum(IV) in phosphoric acid medium which forms a reddish brown 1 1 complex with an absorption maximum around 528 nm. The reaction is fast in the presence of copper(II) and goes to completion within 1 min. Beer's law is obeyed over the concentration range 0.3–7.2 g/ml of platinum(IV) with an optimal range of 1.2–6.6 g/ml. The molar absorptivity is 2.65 × 1041 mol–1 cm–1 and the Sandell's sensitivity is 7.8 ng cm–2. The stability constant, logK, of the complex is 4.96±0.1 at 25 ° C. The effects of time, temperature, concentrations of acids, PCPMS and copper(II), and the interference by various ions are investigated. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of platinum content in alloys and minerals.

The complex formed by uranyl ion with 2-mercaptopyridine-1-oxide (thione) is studied by spectrophotometry. At pH 4.5 and 25 degrees the only complex formed is UO(2)(thione)(3)(-). The conditional stability constant of this complex is 2.6 x 10(12). Tributyl phosphate is used for the extraction of the complex from the aqueous phase and the extraction constant is 8.9 x 10(12). The use of the reagent for the separation and determination of uranyl ion is elaborated.

The noncovalent interaction of dibenzoyl peroxide and beta-cyclodextin (beta-CD) has been studied by spectrophotometry. The mechanism of the inclusion was studied. The results showed that beta-CD reacts with dibenzoyl peroxide to form a 2:1 host-guest complex with an apparent formation constant of 2.5 x 10(4)mol(-2)L(2). The beta-CD reacts with benzoic acid to form a 1:1 host-guest complex with an apparent formation constant of 6.9 x 10(2)mol(-1)L after the dibenzoyl peroxide was reduced by hydroxyl ammonium. Based on the enhancement of the absorbance of dibenzoyl peroxide produced through complex formation, a spectrophotometric method for determination of dibenzoyl peroxide in bulk aqueous solution in the presence of beta-CD was developed. A linear relationship between the absorbance and dibenzoyl peroxide concentration was obtained in the range of 0.300-50.0 microg mL(-1). Linear regression equation of the calibration graph C=0.02926+53.25 A, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9984 and a relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) of 3.4%. The detection limit was 0.200 microg mL(-1), and the recovery was from 98.00 to 105.0%. The proposed method was used to determine the dibenzoyl peroxide in the flour with satisfactory results. The principal advantage of the proposed method is its excellent selectivity based on molecule recognition of beta-CD.

Summary The solvatochromic behaviour ofbis-(cyano)-bis-(9,10-phenanthroline)-iron(II) has been reexamined spectrophotometrically in a series of 19 solvents including water, alcohols and dipolar. aprotic media. Satisfactory correlations between the wave numbers of the long-wavelength band and solvent acceptor numbers are obtained in all media; only values, for carboxylic acids deviate from the regression line.

A spectrophotornetric study of the beryllium complex with purified thorin shows the formation of a I : I complex at pH 12. The dissociation constant obtained after successive corrections for reagent absorbance is 1.38·10-7. Beryllium in concentrations of 0.05% to 2.0% in copper base, zinc base, aluminiuin base and ferrous alloys can be determined by the formation of the thorin complex after its preliminary separation as accetylacetonate in presence of EDTA.
