By electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy we investigated the molecular orientation in a surface-stabilized liquid crystal (LC) cell, which includes a racemic (±) or an enantiomerically enriched (S,S) paramagnetic LC, (2S,5S)-2,5-dimethyl-2-tridecyloxyphenyl-5-[4-(4-tridecyloxy-benzenecarbonyloxy)phenyl]pyrrolidine-1-oxy (2), whose spin source is fixed inside the rigid core. For both the smectic C (SmC) phase of (±)-2 and the chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase of (S,S)-2 in a surface-stabilized LC cell (antiparallel configuration, thickness of 4 μm), the profile of the observed g-value as a function of the angle between the applied magnetic field and the cell plane could be explained by the orientation model, where, with some disordering, the molecules align uniformly with the direction which tilts from the normal line of the smectic layer being orthogonal to the rubbing direction on the cell surface. We divided the effect from the disordering into two parts, one of which is concerning the direction of the molecular long axis and the other is concerning the rotation around the molecular long axis. As a result of the analysis, the SmC* phase gave quite lower ordering concerning the direction of the molecular long axis and a little lower ordering concerning the rotation around the molecular long axis than the SmC phase at the same temperature (80 °C). The obtained lower ordering in the SmC* phase is probably due to the chirality that would result in the formation of a helical superstructure in a bulky state. We provide a hydrodynamical approach utilizing time dependent Landau-Ginzburg model (L-G) and the Cahn-Hilliard model (C-H) to investigate antiferroelectric liquid crystals (AFLCs) exhibiting different chiral phases between paraelectric smectic A (SmA?) phase and antiferroelectric smectic CA? phase (SmCA?). Introducing conserved and non-conserved order parameters in C-H and L-G models, we have predicted the appearance of a chiral smectic C (SmC?) phase and a ferrielectric SmCFI1? phase (three layers SmCA?) in an antiferroelectric phase sequence. The three layers periodicity for SmCFI1? phase is studied in detail with a non-uniform layer interactions among smectic layers with strong experimental support. Finally, we provide some theoretical basis for the non-uniformity of our proposed layer interactions.  相似文献

The effect of an external electric field on the local layer structure is investigated in the SmC* A, SmC* FI and SmC* phases using X-ray diffraction. X-ray scattering and spontaneous polarization measurements are performed under several increasing (and decreasing) steps of AC applied voltage. The effects of the electric field differ significantly from one phase to the other. The chevron-to-bookshelf transition occurs abruptly at a high field value in the SmC* A phase whereas layer deformations are more progressive and occur at lower field values in the other phases. Comparison of the different behaviours suggests that the destruction of the chevron structure is mainly affected by the local molecular order. The aim of this paper is to study the influence of electric field on alignment of para-, ferro- and antiferroelectric phases in the vicinity of SmA* — SmC* or SmC* — SmC A * phase transitions as to obtain mono-domain cells. Four mixtures studied (W-193B, W-193B-1, W-201, W-204D) show the SmC A * phase in a wide room temperature range. Measurements of the spontaneous polarization versus temperature by using reversal current method give an answer to the question, what kind of the transitions take place between para-, ferro- or antiferroelectric phases using the Landau mean field theory. Optimal electrooptic parameters for different compositions of the mixtures such as tilt angle, spontaneous polarization and saturation voltage have been measured to compare parameters of the mixtures studied.  相似文献

3,5-Disubstituted 1,2,4-oxadiazoles are a new type of liquid crystalline (LC) compounds with asymmetrical five-membered heterocycle as a central unit. They have a bent shape and are very convenient model-compounds for studying the dependence of the LC properties on the molecular design. We have also synthesized and investigated ‘banana-shaped’ 1,2,4-oxadiazoles using the ester groups as the linkage units. The new compounds exhibit spontaneous polarization in the smectic phase, even if there is no chiral group in the molecules. Preliminary experimental data suggest the presence of spontaneous polarization in the nematic phase as well. In order to study the structural properties of the LC phases, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on powder samples have been carried out. Based on the XRD data, a model of the structural arrangement of the bent molecules in the smectic phase is provided, which accounts for the macroscopic spontaneous polarization as well as the ferroelectric switching behavior.  相似文献

Liquid crystal possessing two biphenyl moieties in the molecular core and lateral chlorine substitution far from the chiral chain has been studied by dielectric spectroscopy. On cooling from the isotropic phase, the material possesses the frustrated smectic Q* (SmQ*) and SmCA* phases. It has been confirmed by dielectric spectroscopy that the SmQ* phase can be related to the SmCA* anti-ferroelectric phase. However, only one relaxation process has been observed in the SmQ* phase, while in the SmCA*, two relaxations are clearly detectable. It seems that the mode found in the SmQ* can be connected with high-frequency anti-phase mode observed in the SmCA* phase. Its relaxation frequency is similar to PH relaxation frequency, but is weaker. The same relaxation has been observed even a few degrees above the SmQ*–Iso phase transition. Another explanation for the mode detected in SmQ* and isotropic phases can be molecular motions around short molecular axis.  相似文献

We investigated SmC* films sandwiched between silane coated glass plates and observed formation of textures exhibiting a uniform tilt of the smectic layers with respect to the boundary plates. The layer tilt angle increases from zero to as the sample is cooled from the smectic A phase to room temperature. These films show linear electro-optical effects because the permanent polarization can be aligned so that it has a component parallel to the applied field without changing the layer structure. Our analysis indicates that mainly two effects determine the layer tilt. On the one hand, the surface tension tends to minimise the layer tilt. On the other hand, the surface energy promotes the director to be normal to the boundary plates. Received 17 July 1998  相似文献

The influence of the finite dimension of a chiral smectic C liquid crystal planar sample on the helical pitch length is discussed. The discussion is based on the properties of the disclination PH2 system described in Czech. J. Phys. B35 (1985) 655. It is concluded that the existence of the sample free surface can lead to pitch changes with respect to the pitch of a perfect infinite chiral smectic C liquid crystal.  相似文献

The behaviour of the antiferroelectric SmCA liquid crystal phase under applied electric field is discussed theoretically. The phase diagram involving the SmA, SmCA and SmC A * phases is worked out and shown to exhibit a Lifshitz critical point. The deformation of the bilayer structures induced by the field transforms the SmCA phases into a ferrielectric phase whose specific configuration is described. Results of the experimental study on different antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) materials are presented using a number of techniques such as the optical birefringence, electro-optics and the measurements of optical thickness of free-standing films. Despite differences in the molecular structures of the various AFLC materials studied, these are found to exhibit a de Vries type of smecticA* (SmA *) properties in a temperature range higher than SmC * . This correlation leads to the conclusion that these two classes of liquid crystals are related to each other. Furthermore, we suggest that these arise from the same physical mechanism, namely the existence of the weak synclinic (or reduced anticlinic) correlations between the neighbouring molecular tilt directions.  相似文献

Liquid crystal mixtures of non-mesogenic polar molecule with a commercial ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture were prepared. Two mixtures were prepared by mixing 0.5% (w/w) and 1% (w/w) of polar molecules with commercial FLC mixture. Comprehensive studies of dielectric and electro-optic properties of the commercial FLC mixture and the polar molecules doped FLC mixtures have been made as a function of temperatures. Our studies reveal a higher tilt angle in lower concentration (0.5%) mixture but in case of 1% mixture tilt angle is decreased in comparison to 0.5% mixture. The spontaneous polarization of the commercial FLC mixture and other two mixtures is almost equal in magnitude at all temperatures. At the lower temperature region of SmC1 phase, Goldstone mode (GM) dielectric strength of the commercial FLC mixture and low concentration (0.5%) mixture is found almost equal but it is slightly higher in case of high concentration (1%) mixture. With the increase of temperature GM dielectric strength of both the doped mixtures rapidly converges at different temperatures which are much lower than the temperature of transition (TC) from SmC1 – SmA phase. The results have been discussed.  相似文献

Nonlinear dielectric response of antiferroelectric liquid crystals has been studied in the smectic Cα* (SmCα*) phase. The linear dielectric spectrum shows a single relaxation of Debye type and its relaxation frequency is as high as one hundred kHz. The profile of the third-order nonlinear dielectric spectrum varies in complex fashion with temperature. In the vicinity of the SmA-SmCα* phase transition, experimentally obtained nonlinear spectra are well described by those calculated with phenomenological theory of Landau type. The soft mode of the SmCα* phase shows critical slowing-down near the transition temperature. In the lower-temperature region of the SmCα* phase, the contribution from the soft mode of the SmCα* phase reduces and the other relaxation mode with Debye-type spectrum appears at several hundred Hz in the nonlinear spectrum. The appearance of this low-frequency mode suggests that the cooperative fluctuation of directors over long range exists in the SmCα* phase. Studies of structural and phase properties obtained on several ferroelectric liquid crystalline materials with 2-alkoxypropionate group used as a chiral centre and without any lateral substitution are presented. In dependence on the chiral chain length these compounds exhibit the cholesteric N* phase, the ferroelectric smectic C* and a low-temperature SmX phase. Values of the spontaneous polarization and spontaneous tilt angle have been determined within the whole range of the SmC* phase. A low-temperature SmX phase has been identified as the orthogonal hexatic SmB* phase. The molecular parameters, namely the layer spacing in the SmC* and SmB* phases and the average intermolecular distances (D) between neighbouring parallel molecules in all investigated phases have been determined using the results of the X-ray diffraction obtained on non-oriented samples. The effect of the chiral chain length on mesomorphic, structural and physical properties of the studied ferroelectric liquid crystalline materials is discussed.  相似文献

Microtextural polarization, phase transitions, and electro-optical effects are studied in a series of nanocomposites, grown by mixing alkyloxybenzoic acids (nOBAs), displaying hydrogen-bonded dimeric liquid crystal (LC) state, with non-mesogens (single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), perfluorooctanoic acid) or mesogens (bent-core LC compound D14F3). Each of the studied nanocomposites, in which the nOBA serves as a matrix, forms complexes with bent-shaped dimeric, caused by the interaction between the dopant structural units and the dimer rings. This feature, coordinated with the surface anchoring, bulk and electrical effects, leads to drastic reduction of the LC system symmetry. As a result, transitions from achiral (characteristic for the pristine nOBA) to chiral states (including ferroelectric smectic C with C2 symmetry and ferroelectric smectic CG with the lowest C1 triclinic one) take place. The functionalization of the SWCNTs causes drastic increase of the ferroelectricity.  相似文献

Experimental investigations on the ferroelectric liquid crystal, R-4′(1-butoxycarbonyl-1-ethoxy) phenyl 4-(4-octyloxy phenyl) benzoate (1BC1EPOPB) of large spontaneous polarization (P S(+) = 240?nC?cm?2), using dielectric and calorimetric techniques, are reported. The temperature range of 25.0–125.0°C has been chosen for dielectric measurements. Dielectric dispersion studies are carried out in the temperature range 45.0–75.0°C and in the frequency range 2?Hz to 2?MHz for the smectic A, smectic C* and smectic X phases. A new phase called ‘smectic X’ has been found around 56.3°C. The transition temperatures identified by the dielectric dispersion studies for different phases and those given by DSC techniques are in close agreement.  相似文献

An optically switchable, polarization-independent holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (H-PDLC) transmission grating is demonstrated by adding azobenzene-LC and chiral molecules into the H-PDLC formulation. The optical switchable mechanism is from the trans-cis photoisomerization of the doped azobenzene-LC, which modulates the refractive index of the LC rich area. The dependence of the diffraction efficiency of the H-DPLC grating without chiral molecules on light polarization suggests that the orientation of LC directors within the droplet is ellipsoidal and uniaxial. However, the addition of chiral molecules into the H-PDLC formulation helps the formation of isotropic and non-uniaxial LC directors within the droplets. The polarization properties of the grating are investigated and analyzed by the coupled and modified coupled wave theory with a model of sinusoidal dielectric modulation. The results show that the addition of chiral molecules changes the LC phase from nematic to chiral-nematic, where the grating efficiency, which is modulated by the photoinduced phase transition, is independent of the polarization of incident light. Our findings may help improve optical systems that utilize non-polarized light.  相似文献

A binary mixture of an antiferroelectric liquid-crystal material containing a selenium atom and a highly chiral dopant is investigated using resonant X-ray scattering. This mixture exhibits a remarkably wide four-layer intermediate smectic phase, the structure of which is investigated over a temperature range of 16K. Analysis of the resonant X-ray scattering data allows accurate measurement of both the helicoidal pitch and the distortion angle as a function of temperature. The former decreases rapidly as the SmC * phase is approached, whilst the latter remains constant over the temperature range studied at 8°±3° . We also observe that the senses of the helicoidal pitch and the unit cell of the repeating four-layer structure are opposite in this mixture and that there is no pitch inversion over the temperature range studied.  相似文献

Within the framework of Landau-de-Gennes formulation, we analyse the effect of pressure on electric-field-induced phase transitions in a liquid crystal which shows spontaneously an isotropic-smectic A transition. Inferring from the experimental pressure dependences on the layer spacing in smectic A phase, as well as the nematic-smectic A metastable temperature T*AN, we incorporated the pressure dependence in the free energy through (the surface energy term) and the coupling between the quadrupolar nematic ordering Qij and the smectic order parameter ψ. From the S-T phase diagram, we found that the stability of field-induced nematic phase increases with pressure, whereas the discontinuity of the transition decreases. Also, the region where paranematic phase transits directly to smectic A phase increases with pressure.  相似文献

The effect of several polar ester linkage groups incorporated in the molecular core of a chiral lactic acid derivative on self-assembling properties has been investigated by polarizing optical microscopy, small angle X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, optical and electro--optical studies. The compound possesses the paraelectric smectic A* (SmA*) and ferroelectric smectic C* (SmC*) phases over a broad temperature range. Mesomorphic behaviour, spontaneous polarization, birefringence, optical transmission, dielectric anisotropy and structural properties of the self-assembled chiral material have been determined. The obtained results are discussed and compared with that of other liquid crystalline materials. Experimentally determined spontaneous polarization and tilt angle values are also used to elucidate the nature of SmC* to SmA* phase transition. The effect of polar ester linkages in the molecular core has also been discussed.  相似文献
