Different sleep stages are associated with distinct dynamical patterns in EEG signals. In this article, we explored the relationship between the sleep architecture and fractal dimension (FD) of sleep EEG. In particular, we applied the FD analysis to the sleep EEG of patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), which is characterized by recurrent oxyhemoglobin desaturation and arousals from sleep, a disease which received increasing public attention due to its significant potential impact on health. We showed that the variation of FD reflects the macrostructure of sleep. Furthermore, the fast fluctuation of FD, as measured by the zero-crossing rate of detrended FD (zDFD), is a useful indicator of sleep disturbance, and therefore, correlates with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), and hourly number of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) decreases greater than 4%, as obstructive apnea/hypopnea disturbs sleep architecture. For practical purpose, a modified index combining zDFD of EEG and body mass index (BMI) may be useful for evaluating the severity of OSAHS symptoms.  相似文献

A non-restrictive and non-contact respiratory movement monitoring system that finds the boundary between chest and abdomen automatically and detects the vertical movement of each part of the body separately is proposed. The system uses a fiber-grating vision sensor technique and the boundary position detection is carried out by calculating the centers of gravity of upward moving and downward moving sampling points, respectively. In the experiment to evaluate the ability to detect the respiratory movement signals of each part and to discriminate between obstructive and central apneas, detected signals of the two parts and their total clearly showed the peculiarities of obstructive and central apnea. The cross talk between the two categories classified automatically according to several rules that reflect the peculiarities was 15%. This result is sufficient for discriminating central sleep apnea syndrome from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and indicates that the system is promising as screening equipment. © 2005 The Optical Society of Japan  相似文献

To study noise-induced sleep disturbance, a new procedure called “noise interrupted method”has been developed. The experiment is conducted in the bedroom of the house of each subject. The sounds are reproduced with a mini-disk player which has an automatic reverse function. If the sound is disturbing and subjects cannot sleep, they are allowed to switch off the sound 1 h after they start to try to sleep. This switch off (noise interrupted behavior) is an important index of sleep disturbance. Next morning they fill in a questionnaire in which quality of sleep, disturbance of sounds, the time when they switched off the sound, etc. are asked. The results showed a good relationship between LAeq and the percentages of the subjects who could not sleep in an hour and between LAeq and the disturbance reported in the questionnaire. This suggests that this method is a useful tool to measure the sleep disturbance caused by noise under well-controlled conditions.  相似文献

Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a breathing disorder that alters heart rate variability (HRV) dynamics during sleep. HRV in children is commonly assessed through conventional spectral analysis. However, bispectral analysis provides both linearity and stationarity information and has not been applied to the assessment of HRV in pediatric OSA. Here, this work aimed to assess HRV using bispectral analysis in children with OSA for signal characterization and diagnostic purposes in two large pediatric databases (0–13 years). The first database (training set) was composed of 981 overnight ECG recordings obtained during polysomnography. The second database (test set) was a subset of the Childhood Adenotonsillectomy Trial database (757 children). We characterized three bispectral regions based on the classic HRV frequency ranges (very low frequency: 0–0.04 Hz; low frequency: 0.04–0.15 Hz; and high frequency: 0.15–0.40 Hz), as well as three OSA-specific frequency ranges obtained in recent studies (BW1: 0.001–0.005 Hz; BW2: 0.028–0.074 Hz; BWRes: a subject-adaptive respiratory region). In each region, up to 14 bispectral features were computed. The fast correlation-based filter was applied to the features obtained from the classic and OSA-specific regions, showing complementary information regarding OSA alterations in HRV. This information was then used to train multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural networks aimed at automatically detecting pediatric OSA using three clinically defined severity classifiers. Both classic and OSA-specific MLP models showed high and similar accuracy (Acc) and areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUCs) for moderate (classic regions: Acc = 81.0%, AUC = 0.774; OSA-specific regions: Acc = 81.0%, AUC = 0.791) and severe (classic regions: Acc = 91.7%, AUC = 0.847; OSA-specific regions: Acc = 89.3%, AUC = 0.841) OSA levels. Thus, the current findings highlight the usefulness of bispectral analysis on HRV to characterize and diagnose pediatric OSA.  相似文献

There are various ways of quantifying the statistical heterogeneity of a given probability law: Statistics uses variance — which measures the law’s dispersion around its mean; Physics and Information Theory use entropy — which measures the law’s randomness; Economics uses the Gini index — which measures the law’s egalitarianism. In this research we explore an alternative to the Gini index-the Pietra index-which is a counterpart of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic. The Pietra index is shown to be a natural and elemental measure of statistical heterogeneity, which is especially useful in the case of asymmetric and skewed probability laws, and in the case of asymptotically Paretian laws with finite mean and infinite variance. Moreover, the Pietra index is shown to have immediate and fundamental interpretations within the following applications: renewal processes and continuous time random walks; infinite-server queueing systems and shot noise processes; financial derivatives. The interpretation of the Pietra index within the context of financial derivatives implies that derivative markets, in effect, use the Pietra index as their benchmark measure of statistical heterogeneity.  相似文献

Objective

Chemotherapy commonly causes liver injury through sinusoidal obstructive syndrome and steatosis. Chemotherapy-induced liver injury may make it more difficult to detect metastases secondary to reduced contrast between the injured liver and metastases. The aim of this study was to determine the sensitivity of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) contrast-enhanced imaging in patients who have undergone chemotherapy prior to liver surgery.

Methods

Local ethics committee approval was obtained. Thirty-one patients with hepatic metastases completing preoperative chemotherapy were prospectively recruited. Images were reviewed independently by two blinded observers who identified and localized lesions with a four-point confidence scale. The alternative free-response receiver operator characteristic method was used to analyze the results.

Results

The sensitivity in detecting colorectal metastases following chemotherapy was 78% and 76%, respectively, for observers 1 and 2 (95% confidence interval: 71%–85% and 68%–82%). The areas under the alternative free-response receiver operator curves were 0.73 and 0.80 for observers 1 and 2, respectively.

Conclusion

Compared to previously published work on chemotherapy-naïve patients, it is clear that the sensitivity of SPIO-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting colorectal metastases following chemotherapy is reduced. It is therefore critical that all imaging — pre-, during and postchemotherapy — is reviewed when reporting liver MRI prior to surgery.  相似文献

Many laboratory and field studies of the effect of noise on sleep have been performed where subjects sleep whole nights. It was suggested from our former studies that the most serious effect of noise on sleep is disturbance in falling asleep and that people have to make efforts to try to sleep in noisy situations. In this study, the effort to fall asleep was used as an index of sleep and the effect of various physical properties of sounds was examined. Subjects were asked to try to sleep listening to sounds presented with a mini-disk and they were allowed to switch off the sound after 1 h if they could not sleep. The results suggest that (1) whether subjects can sleep within 1 h after they start to try to sleep is a good index of the effect of noise on sleep and that LAeqis a good index of the effect of noise on sleep except for the sounds which have meanings such as songs and people's talk.  相似文献

This paper presents the results obtained in a study on environmental noise pollution in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. The equivalent sound level values—LAeq, 2hr—were measured and tabulated for 1000 locations spread over the urban zones of the city of Curitiba. It has been found out that 93.3% out of the locations display during the day equivalent sound levels over 65 dB(A), and 40.3% out of the total number of locations measured display during the day extremely high values of equivalent sound levels: over 75 dB(A).  相似文献

Motivated by the recent attention on superluminal phenomena, we investigate the compatibility between faster-than-c propagation and the fundamental principles of relativity and causality. We first argue that special relativity can easily accommodate—indeed, does not exclude—faster-than-c signaling at the kinematical level. As far as causality is concerned, it is impossible to make statements of general validity, without specifying at least some features of the tachyonic propagation. We thus focus on the Scharnhorst effect (faster-than-c photon propagation in the Casimir vacuum), which is perhaps the most plausible candidate for a physically sound realization of these phenomena. We demonstrate that in this case the faster-than-c aspects are “benign” and constrained in such a manner as to not automatically lead to causality violations.  相似文献

A time series is remapped onto an entropy concept, based on the Theil index. The Manhattan distance between these surrogate series is calculated, and contrasted to the usual correlation distance measure. The idea is applied to several Gross Domestic Product (relative increments) of rich countries. Such distances are calculated for various time window sizes. The role of time averaging in such finite size windows is discussed. We construct the locally minimum spanning tree (LMST) corresponding to the distance matrix. Another hierarchical network structure (Unidirectional Minimal Length Path) is compared with the LMST for confirming that the mean distance between the most developed countries on different networks actually decreases in time, — which we consider as a proof of economy globalization. It is stressed that this entropy distance measure seems more suitable in detecting some “phase transition” in time series, like a globalization process than the usual correlation based measure.  相似文献

The number of helicopter operations has rapidly increased during the last 20 years in Japan. Helicopter noise sounds different from other aircraft; the waveform of the sound pressure is impulsive and the signal duration is relatively long. The Environmental Agency of Japan implemented new guidelines for evaluating noise exposure around small airports, including heliports, in 1990. This study was executed in connection with the development of provisional guidelines. Psychoacoustic experiments were carried out to identify an evaluation index for helicopter noise. In order to examine the effect of duration independently, we not only used original sound recordings, but also synthesized sound signals. The durations of these sound signals were time compressed or expanded without degrading the quality of the original sound recording. The test results show that the effect of duration is significant, and that the A-weighted sound exposure level is a better index than the maximum A-weighted sound pressure level for the evaluation of helicopter noise.  相似文献

This paper links together the notion of entropy and the notion of inequality indices—the former is applied in Statistical Physics to measure randomness, and the latter is applied in Economics to measure evenness. We explore the profound similarities between these diametric notions, construct a mathematical transformation between them, and show how randomness can be used to measure evenness-and vice versa. In particular, we devise and study Rényi’s index—a randomness-based measure of evenness with special properties. Rényi’s index is established as an effectual gauge of statistical heterogeneity in the context of general probability laws defined on the positive half-line.  相似文献

We investigate an economic system in which one large agent—the Japan government changes the environment of numerous smaller agents—the Japan agriculture producers by indirect regulation of prices of agriculture goods. The reason for this intervention was that before the oil crisis in 1974 Japan agriculture production prices exhibited irregular and large amplitude changes. By means of analysis of correlations and a combination of singular spectrum analysis (SSA), principal component analysis (PCA), and time delay phase space construction (TDPSC) we study the influence of the government measures on the domestic piglet prices and production in Japan. We show that the government regulation politics was successful and lead: (i) to a decrease of the nonstationarities and to increase of predictability of the piglet price; (ii) to a coupling of the price and production cycles; and (iii) to increase of determinism of the dynamics of the fluctuations of piglet price around the year average price. The investigated case is an example confirming the thesis that a large agent can change in a significant way the environment of the small agents in complex (economic or financial) systems which can be crucial for their survival or extinction.  相似文献

Recent papers have discussed the optimal reverberation times in classrooms for speech intelligibility, based on the assumption of a diffuse sound field. Here this question was investigated for more ‘typical’ classrooms with non-diffuse sound fields. A ray-tracing model was modified to predict speech-intelligibility metric U50. It was used to predict U50 in various classroom configurations for various values of the room absorption, allowing the optimal absorption (that predicting the highest U50)—and the corresponding optimal reverberation time—to be identified in each case. The range of absorptions and reverberation times corresponding to high speech intelligibility were also predicted in each case. Optimal reverberation times were also predicted from the optimal surface-absorption coefficients using Sabine and Eyring versions of diffuse-field theory, and using the diffuse-field expression of Hodgson and Nosal. In order to validate the ray-tracing model, predictions were made for three classrooms with highly diffuse sound fields; these were compared to values obtained by the diffuse-field models, with good agreement. The methods were then applied to three ‘typical’ classrooms with non-diffuse fields. Optimal reverberation times increased with room volume and noise level to over 1 s. The accuracy of the Hodgson and Nosal expression varied with classroom size and noise level. The optimal average surface-absorption coefficients varied from 0.19 to 0.83 in the different classroom configurations tested. High speech intelligibility was, in general, predicted for a wide range of coefficients, but could not be obtained in a large, noisy classroom.  相似文献

Background

Sleep spindles, as detected on scalp electroencephalography (EEG), are considered to be markers of thalamo-cortical network integrity. Since obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a known cause of brain dysfunction, the aim of this study was to investigate sleep spindle frequency distribution in OSA. Seven non-OSA subjects and 21 patients with OSA (11 mild and 10 moderate) were studied. A matching pursuit procedure was used for automatic detection of fast (≥13Hz) and slow (<13Hz) spindles obtained from 30min samples of NREM sleep stage 2 taken from initial, middle and final night thirds (sections I, II and III) of frontal, central and parietal scalp regions.

Results

Compared to non-OSA subjects, Moderate OSA patients had higher central and parietal slow spindle percentage (SSP) in all night sections studied, and higher frontal SSP in sections II and III. As the night progressed, there was a reduction in central and parietal SSP, while frontal SSP remained high. Frontal slow spindle percentage in night section III predicted OSA with good accuracy, with OSA likelihood increased by 12.1%for every SSP unit increase (OR 1.121, 95% CI 1.013 - 1.239, p=0.027).

Conclusions

These results are consistent with diffuse, predominantly frontal thalamo-cortical dysfunction during sleep in OSA, as more posterior brain regions appear to maintain some physiological spindle frequency modulation across the night. Displaying changes in an opposite direction to what is expected from the aging process itself, spindle frequency appears to be informative in OSA even with small sample sizes, and to represent a sensitive electrophysiological marker of brain dysfunction in OSA.

Because quiet areas in dense urban environments are important to well-being, the prediction of sound propagation to shielded urban areas is an ongoing research focus. Sound levels in shielded areas, such as canyons between rows of buildings, are strongly influenced by distant sources. Therefore, propagation factors such as metrology, screening, and intermediate canyons—as occur between a source canyon and a receiver canyon—must be addressed in an engineering propagation model. Though current models address many important propagation factors, engineering treatment of a closed urban canyon, subject to multiple internal reflections, remains difficult.A numerical investigation of sound propagation across the open tops of intermediate urban canyons has been performed, using the parabolic equation and equivalent sources methods. Results have been collected for various canyon geometries, and the influences of multiple canyons, canyon/rooftop absorption, variable rooftop height, wind gradient, and correlated versus uncorrelated source models have been investigated. Resulting wideband excess attenuation values ranged from −1 dB to −4 dB per canyon, and were fairly constant with frequency in many useful cases. By characterizing the excess attenuation of canyons intermediate to the source and receiver, the influence of these intermediate canyons could be addressed simply, without the overhead of a detailed numerical calculation.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that plankton predators sense the presence of their prey through detection of chemical signals exuded by the prey. This process is formulated using elements of existing models, tailored to correspond to the specific process under investigation. The motivation for the resulting model is discussed in detail. Numerical results are then presented. It is found that the front representing the advance of the predator into the prey is irregular in a novel way, and the reasons for this anomalous invasion are discussed. It is recognized that reaction-diffusion models, starting perhaps with Turing, can lead to what might have been thought of as anomalous patterns — yet the “flicker” front advance discovered here is indeed novel.  相似文献

针对非规则封闭空间声场建模问题,提出了一种基于Chebyshev-变分原理的声场建模方法。该方法首先选取包络非规则声场的矩形空间并将此矩形空间内的声压函数展开成三重Chebyshev级数形式,然后通过坐标变换得到定义域空间中的声场势能和声场动能,最后按照里茨方法对声场的拉格朗日泛函进行求解,得到声场的特征方程并求得声场固有频率和模态。通过与曲面声场的数值结果对比,验证了本建模方法的正确性和有效性。在此基础上研究具有不同倾角的梯形声场固有特性,分析内部凹槽深度对"凹"型声场频率和模态的影响。结果表明,梯形声场模态会随着倾角增大而逐步演变;"凹"型声场低阶频率随凹槽深度的增加而逐渐减小,但第一阶频率却呈现先减小后增大的特点。   相似文献

Background  

We have previously shown that the White-crowned Sparrow (WCS) decreases sleep by 60% during a period of migratory restlessness relative to a non-migratory period when housed in a 12 h light: 12 h dark cycle. Despite this sleep reduction, accuracy of operant performance was not impaired, and in fact rates of responding were elevated during the migratory period, effects opposite to those routinely observed following enforced sleep deprivation. To determine whether the previously observed increases in operant responding were due to improved performance or to the effects of migration on activity level, here we assessed operant performance using a task in which optimal performance depends on the bird's ability to withhold a response for a fixed interval of time (differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate-behavior, or DRL); elevated response rates ultimately impair performance by decreasing access to food reward. To determine the influence of seasonal changes in day length on sleep and behavioral patterns, we recorded sleep and assessed operant performance across 4 distinct seasons (winter, spring, summer and fall) under a changing photoperiod.  相似文献
