Summary A setup was developed in order to determine the bitumen content in asphalt concrete by neutron reflection. The main parts of this setup are an Am-Be neutron source of 37 GBq and a 3He neutron detector. To avoid geometrical effects of the measurements, the optimum volume of the samples was determined by plotting the reflected neutron response versus the sample volume. For the calibration of the system, the American Standard Method (ASTM) was used when preparing aggregate and asphalt concrete samples. The method was then compared to the conventional chemical method by analyzing unknown samples taken from an asphalt comcrete producing plant and finally the method was assessed in terms of reproducibility, sensitivity and precision.  相似文献

Water content in zeolites has been determined by an improved neutron reflection method using a Pu-Be neutron source of 106 n·s–1 intensity and a BF3 counter. It was found that the water content of different types of zeolites collected in Hungary varies between 9 and 12 wt.%. The standard deviation of the determination does not exceed 0.5 wt.%. The matrix effect on the sensitivity and accuracy was also studied. An approximate relation is given between the count rate and the neutron physical parameters of the samples.  相似文献

The effective atomic number Z dependence of the ratio R of the intensity of elastically and inelastically scattered X-rays has been employed in the determination of the ash contents of some coal samples from Hungary, Poland and Russia. The results obtained by this method compared favorably with those obtained by the combustion method. This fast, simple and nondestructive method can therefore be used for on-line quality control of coal produced in a mine.This work was supported by the Hungarian Research Foundation (Contract No. 016713).  相似文献

The thermal neutron moderation analysis facility at the Institute of Experimental Physics, Debrecen, Hungary has been used to determine the weight percent of total hydrogen content in Nigerian palm oil. The facility utilizes the fast neutron moderation technique in which the intensity of reflected thermalized neutrons is proportional to the hydrogen content of the sample exposed to fast neutrons. Using a 100 cm3 sample the total hydrogen content in the oven-dry palm oil sample was found to be 12.0±0.1% within a measuring time of 5 minutes. The method is fast and can be used in plant quality control where the hydrogen content must be determined within specific limits.  相似文献

The aim of the work was to study the influence of bound water on the accuracy of the moisture measurement. The interfacial structure in thin epoxy bilayer films was investigated with neutron reflection. For each experiment, a mixture of crosslinker and deuterated resin was spun onto a chemically similar, fully cured, protonated epoxy film. The reflectivity measurements were performed before and after curing the top epoxy film. We focused on the extent of penetration of the components of the top layer into the network of the bottom layer. The effect of the cure temperature of each layer was examined. In addition, the effect of the initial molecular weight of the oligomers in the top layer was probed by the partial curing of the mixture before spinning. As deposited, the components of the top layer penetrated the bottom layer to an extent that was largely independent of the aforementioned factors. The principal observation was that an additional penetration occurred with curing. This additional penetration was dependent upon both the molecular weight of the top layer and the cure temperature of the top layer relative to the glass‐transition temperature of the bottom layer. A decrease in the thickness of the top layer with curing was also observed, which likely indicates some evaporation of oligomers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The technique of prompt neutron capture gamma-ray spectroscopy has been used to determine sulphur concentrations in extraterrestrial materials. In particular an effort was made to resolve reported discrepancies in the sulphur assays for the lunar rock sample 70215. While the validity of chemical analysis techniques are often influenced by the chemical form of the sulphur, particularly when in low concentration, the method used here is independent of such effects. The lunar and a bulk Allende meteorite sample were analyzed for sulphur, iron and silicon. The latter material, being well documented, was analyzed in order to verify the techniques of measurement and the subsequent methods of data reduction. Based upon our measurements and the acceptance of the silicon and iron content of the lunar sample the sulphur content was found to be 1741±112 ppm by weight.  相似文献

Chloride ions may be removed from reinforced concrete using an electroosmotic procedure. Process controlling requires a nondestructive analyzing method. For this purposes activation analysis with both thermal and fast neutrons has been investigated using low flux neutron sources. For the determination of phosphorus in different matrices, the derivative neutron activation analysis is especially applicable to aqueous samples, since the conventional neutron activation analysis is not useful for the determination of phosphorus. Phosphorus when reacted with ammonium molybdate 4 hydrate and ammonium metavanadate forms molybdo vanado phosphoric acid. This complex is preconcentrated by extracting into methyl isobutyl ketone. The organic phase containing the molybdo vanado phosphoric acid is neutron activated and the phosphorus is determined through the activation product of 52V. Preparation of this complex, its stoichiometry, application to trace level determination of phosphorus and improved detection limit are discussed. This method was applied for the analysis of industrial effluent samples.  相似文献

The factors that affect accurate, quantitative results to be obtained by neutron induced gamma-ray emission tomography are stated. The technique, which is a combination of neutron activation analysis with computerised gamma-ray emission tomography, would be enhanced by the use of multiple detector assemblies, in geometrical configurations, which simultaneously record the gamma-rays emitted and improve detection efficiency. Developments in the past few years in positron emission tomography (PET) where scanners made of single scintillation block detectors, cut into smaller segments, to form individual crystal detector elements and packed in ring around the radioactive object, are discussed. The coincident detection efficiency for annihilation photons and cascade gamma-rays for such systems are considered and the possibilities of carrying out NIGET with coincident gamma-ray tomography are explored whilst indicating some of the limitations. This is an area which requires further, intense investigation and has an impact on a wide range of applications, particularly in the biomedical field.  相似文献

Low-temperature calorimetry has been used to determine the ice content in concrete at different temperatures when exposed to low-temperature environments. However, the analysis of the ice content from the measured data of heat flow is not straightforward. In this study, two important factors influencing the ice content calculation are discussed. The importance of the baseline determination for the calculation of the ice content is realized. Two different methods of generating the baseline are discussed. First, the ‘J-baseline’ is discussed which is a recently proposed extrapolation method based on the accumulated heat curves measured in the freezing and the melting process. Second, the ‘C-baseline’ is discussed in which a calculated baseline is used where the heat capacity of both water and ice and the phase changing behaviour under different testing temperatures are considered. It turns out that both the ‘J-baseline’ method and the ‘C-baseline’ method can be used to calculate the approximate baseline. The heat of fusion of the water confined in small pores is another important parameter to be considered in ice content calculation. This property must be carefully analyzed in order to accurately calculate the ice contents at different temperatures in the freezing and melting process. It should be noted that there is no general agreement on how to obtain the important temperature dependence of the heat of fusion of water confined in small pores. By performing comparison studies, the present study shows the influence of the different values of the heat of fusion commonly adopted on the calculated ice content for the studied concrete samples. The importance and necessity to use an accurate value of the heat of fusion is emphasized. Based on the calculation of the baseline proposed in this work and by carefully selecting the values for the heat of fusion, the ice content in a hardened concrete sample is expected to be estimated with an acceptable accuracy.  相似文献

A method is described for epithermal neutron activation analysis of 17 elements in granite rock samples using a single standard. Gold has been used as a single comparator due to its relatively high resonance integral value (I0=400 barn). In addition, it is preferable to Co in order to obtain a large epithermal activation in a short irradiation. The method of calculation is simple and rapid and can be done using a small calculator. Epithermal activation is able to overcome the difficulty arising from changing irradiation position as well as increasing the number of determinable elements by eliminating the interference from undesired isotopes which have relatively high thermal cross section values (0), when reactor neutron flux is used. The coupling of epithermal activation with the monostandard method has the advantage of using a small Cd-cover which overcomes most of the difficulties arising in the relative method with large volume cadmium filters.  相似文献

The development and first applications of a new ultrasonic reflection method for determination of the viscoelastic properties of polymer films are reported. The complex shear modulus G* and the complex longitudinal modulus L*=K*+ 4/3 G* of the samples are derived from the measured complex reflection coefficients of an ultrasonic shear and longitudinal wave, respectively. From G and L the Young's modulus E, the compression modulus K and the Poisson ratio ν can be calculated for isotropic materials. A LiNbO3-transducer (10° rotated Y-cut) is used for the simultaneous excitation of longitudinal and transversal ultrasonic waves, which allows to determine different elastic constants by one measurement. A measuring cell with normal incidence of the ultrasonic waves is used. The equipment has been applied to study the time dependence of the moduli during film formation from an aqueous polymer dispersion and the isothermal curing of an epoxy resin. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the elastic constants of a carbon-black filled rubber and during non-isothermal crystallization of a semi-crystalline polymer has been studied.  相似文献

The concentrations of O, Na, Cl, V, Mn and Ni in crude oils of different origins were determined, using sampling (SNAA) and on-stream (ONAA) activation analyses. Samples were irradiated with thermal and fast neutrons produced by a 0.3 mg252Cf source and a 14 MeV generator. The H-content and the C/H atomic ratio have been determined by thermal neutron reflection method using an 18 GBq Pu−Be source. A method has been developed for the determination of cadmium in samples of food and biological materials using neutron activation analysis with radiochemical separation. The irradiated sample is digested in presence of cadmium carrier, with a nitric-perchloric mixture, evaporated to dryness, dissolved in 6M HCl and placed onto an ion exchange column loaded with Dowex 1-X8 resin in chloride form and conditioned with HCl 6M. The cadmium is retained in the resin. After a washing procedure with several portions of HCl of decreasing concentration, the cadmium is eluted with an ammonia-ammonium chloride buffer. The activity of 115mIn which is in equilibrium with 115Cd, is measured using a NaI(Tl) well type detector. The method has been evaluated by analyzing certified reference materials with cadmium concentrations covering a range of 0.020 to 200 mg.kg-1. The agreement of the results with the certified values is within 95%, which gives an indication of the sensitivity and accuracy of the proposed method.  相似文献
