For a metric continuum X, let Fn(X)={AX:A is nonempty and has at most n points}. In this paper we show a continuum X such that F2(X) has the fixed point property while X does not have it.  相似文献

We prove that if X and Y are t-equivalent spaces (that is, if Cp(X) and Cp(Y) are homeomorphic), then there are spaces Zn, locally closed subspaces Bn of Zn, and locally closed subspaces Yn of Y, nN+, such that each Zn admits a perfect finite-to-one mapping onto a closed subspace of Xn, Yn is an image under a perfect mapping of Bn, and Y=?{Yn:nN+}. It is deduced that some classes of spaces, which for metric spaces coincide with absolute Borelian classes, are preserved by t-equivalence. Also some limitations on the complexity of spaces t-equivalent to “nice” spaces are obtained.  相似文献

For every space X let K(X) be the set of all compact subsets of X. Christensen [J.P.R. Christensen, Necessary and sufficient conditions for measurability of certain sets of closed subsets, Math. Ann. 200 (1973) 189-193] proved that if X,Y are separable metrizable spaces and F:K(X)→K(Y) is a monotone map such that any LK(Y) is covered by F(K) for some KK(X), then Y is complete provided X is complete. It is well known [J. Baars, J. de Groot, J. Pelant, Function spaces of completely metrizable space, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 340 (1993) 871-879] that this result is not true for non-separable spaces. In this paper we discuss some additional properties of F which guarantee the validity of Christensen's result for more general spaces.  相似文献

A space Y is called an extension of a space X if Y contains X as a dense subspace. Two extensions of X are said to be equivalent if there is a homeomorphism between them which fixes X point-wise. For two (equivalence classes of) extensions Y and Y of X let Y?Y if there is a continuous function of Y into Y which fixes X point-wise. An extension Y of X is called a one-point extension of X if Y?X is a singleton. Let P be a topological property. An extension Y of X is called a P-extension of X if it has P.One-point P-extensions comprise the subject matter of this article. Here P is subject to some mild requirements. We define an anti-order-isomorphism between the set of one-point Tychonoff extensions of a (Tychonoff) space X (partially ordered by ?) and the set of compact non-empty subsets of its outgrowth βX?X (partially ordered by ⊆). This enables us to study the order-structure of various sets of one-point extensions of the space X by relating them to the topologies of certain subspaces of its outgrowth. We conclude the article with the following conjecture. For a Tychonoff spaces X denote by U(X) the set of all zero-sets of βX which miss X.
Conjecture. For locally compact spaces X and Y the partially ordered sets(U(X),⊆)and(U(Y),⊆)are order-isomorphic if and only if the spacesclβX(βX?υX)andclβY(βY?υY)are homeomorphic.  相似文献

Let Z be a metric continuum and n be a positive integer. Let Cn(Z) be the hyperspace of the nonempty closed subsets of Z with at most n components. In this paper we prove the following result: Let X be a local dendrite such that every point of X has a neighborhood which is a dendrite whose set of end points is closed and Z is any continuum such that Cn(X) is homeomorphic to Cm(Z) for some n,m?3, then X is homeomorphic to Z.  相似文献

For a natural number m?0, a map from a compactum X to a metric space Y is an m-dimensional Lelek map if the union of all non-trivial continua contained in the fibers of f is of dimension ?m. In [M. Levin, Certain finite-dimensional maps and their application to hyperspaces, Israel J. Math. 105 (1998) 257-262], Levin proved that in the space C(X,I) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to the unit interval I=[0,1], almost all maps are (n−1)-dimensional Lelek maps. Moreover, he showed that in the space C(X,Ik) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to the k-dimensional cube Ik (k?1), almost all maps are (nk)-dimensional Lelek maps. In this paper, we generalize Levin's result. For any (separable) metric space Y, we define the piecewise embedding dimension ped(Y) of Y and we prove that in the space C(X,Y) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to a complete metric ANR Y, almost all maps are (nk)-dimensional Lelek maps, where k=ped(Y). As a corollary, we prove that in the space C(X,Y) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to a Peano curve Y, almost all maps are (n−1)-dimensional Lelek maps and in the space C(X,M) of all maps of an n-dimensional compactum X to a k-dimensional Menger manifold M, almost all maps are (nk)-dimensional Lelek maps. It is known that k-dimensional Lelek maps are k-dimensional maps for k?0.  相似文献

A topological space X is called almost maximal if it is without isolated points and for every xX, there are only finitely many ultrafilters on X converging to x. We associate with every countable regular homogeneous almost maximal space X a finite semigroup Ult(X) so that if X and Y are homeomorphic, Ult(X) and Ult(Y) are isomorphic. Semigroups Ult(X) are projectives in the category F of finite semigroups. These are bands decomposing into a certain chain of rectangular components. Under MA, for each projective S in F, there is a countable almost maximal topological group G with Ult(G) isomorphic to S. The existence of a countable almost maximal topological group cannot be established in ZFC. However, there are in ZFC countable regular homogeneous almost maximal spaces X with Ult(X) being a chain of idempotents.  相似文献

Let π:XY be a surjective continuous map between Tychonoff spaces. The map π induces, by composition, an injective morphism C(Y)→C(X) between the corresponding rings of real-valued continuous functions, and this morphism allows us to consider C(Y) as a subring of C(X). This paper deals with finiteness properties of the ring extension C(Y)⊆C(X) in relation to topological properties of the map π:XY. The main result says that, for X a compact subset of Rn, the extension C(Y)⊆C(X) is integral if and only if X decomposes into a finite union of closed subsets such that π is injective on each one of them.  相似文献

Let X be a metric continuum and 2x (C(X)) denote the hyperspace of closed subsets (subcontinua) of X. The concept of arc-smoothness, which is a special type of contractibility, is investigated in 2x and C(X). Results are obtained about hyperspaces of locally connected continua, about continua for which C(X) and the cone over X are homeomorphic, about Whitney levels in C(X), and about hyperspaces of hereditarily indecomposable continua. Some examples are given and several natural questions are raised.  相似文献

The disconnection number d(X) is the least number of points in a connected topological graph X such that removal of d(X) points will disconnect X (Nadler, 1993 [6]). Let Dn denote the set of all homeomorphism classes of topological graphs with disconnection number n. The main result characterizes the members of Dn+1 in terms of four possible operations on members of Dn. In addition, if X and Y are topological graphs and X is a subspace of Y with no endpoints, then d(X)?d(Y) and Y obtains from X with exactly d(Y)−d(X) operations. Some upper and lower bounds on the size of Dn are discussed. The algorithm of the main result has been implemented to construct the classes Dn for n?8, to estimate the size of D9, and to obtain information on certain subclasses such as non-planar graphs (n?9) and regular graphs (n?10).  相似文献

For a non-compact metrizable space X, let E(X) be the set of all one-point metrizable extensions of X, and when X is locally compact, let EK(X) denote the set of all locally compact elements of E(X) and be the order-anti-isomorphism (onto its image) defined in [M. Henriksen, L. Janos, R.G. Woods, Properties of one-point completions of a non-compact metrizable space, Comment. Math. Univ. Carolin. 46 (2005) 105-123; in short HJW]. By definition λ(Y)=?n<ωclβX(UnX)\X, where Y=X∪{p}∈E(X) and {Un}n<ω is an open base at p in Y. We characterize the elements of the image of λ as exactly those non-empty zero-sets of βX which miss X, and the elements of the image of EK(X) under λ, as those which are moreover clopen in βX\X. This answers a question of [HJW]. We then study the relation between E(X) and EK(X) and their order structures, and introduce a subset ES(X) of E(X). We conclude with some theorems on the cardinality of the sets E(X) and EK(X), and some open questions.  相似文献

Let Cα(X,Y) be the set of all continuous functions from X to Y endowed with the set-open topology where α is a hereditarily closed, compact network on X which is closed under finite unions. We proved that the density of the space Cα(X,Y) is at most iw(X)⋅d(Y) where iw(X) denotes the i-weight of the Tychonoff space X, and d(Y) denotes the density of the space Y when Y is an equiconnected space with equiconnecting function Ψ, and Y has a base consists of Ψ-convex subsets of Y. We also prove that the equiconnectedness of the space Y cannot be replaced with pathwise connectedness of Y. In fact, it is shown that for each infinite cardinal κ, there is a pathwise connected space Y such that π-weight of Y is κ, but Souslin number of the space Ck([0,1],Y) is κ2.  相似文献

Let X be a continuum. The n-fold hyperspace Cn(X), n<∞, is the space of all nonempty compact subsets of X with the Hausdorff metric. Four types of local connectivity at points of Cn(X) are investigated: connected im kleinen, locally connected, arcwise connected im kleinen and locally arcwise connected. Characterizations, as well as necessary or sufficient conditions, are obtained for Cn(X) to have one or another of the local connectivity properties at a given point. Several results involve the property of Kelley or C*-smoothness. Some new results are obtained for C(X), the space of subcontinua of X. A class of continua X is given for which Cn(X) is connected im kleinen only at subcontinua of X and for which any two such subcontinua must intersect.  相似文献

The complete Boolean homomorphisms from the category algebra C(X) of a complete matrix space X to the category algebra C(Y) of a Baire topological space Y are characterized as those σ-homomorphisms which are induced by continuous maps from dense G8-subsets of Y into X. This result is used to deduce a series of related results in topology and measure theory (some of which are well-known). Finally a similar result for the complete Boolean homomorphisms from the category algebra C(X) of a compact Hausdorff space X tothe category algebra C(Y) of a Baire topological space Y is proved.  相似文献

The following result, and a closely related one, is proved: If u:XY is an open, perfect surjection, with X metrizable and with dim X = 0 or dim Y = 0, then there exists a perfect surjection h: Y×S→X such that u ° h = πY (where S in the Cantor set and π : Y×S→ Y is the projection). If moreover, u-1(y) is homeomorphic to S for all y?Y, then h can be chosen to be a homeomorphism.  相似文献

It is shown that if dim Y < ∞ and if f(X) = Y is a mapping between compact metric spaces such that 1 ? m ? dim f-1(y)?n for all y ? Y, then there exists a closed set K ? X such that dim K ? n ? m and dim f(K) = dim Y. This answers a question posed by J. Keesling and D. Wilson.  相似文献

Let X and Y denote compact Hausdorff spaces, C(X) and C(Y) the sup-norm Banach spaces of continuous real-valued functions on X and Y respectively, and φ: C(X) → C(Y) an onto isomorphism whose bound is less than three. With the aid of second duals, we construct a natural function from X into the set of finite subsets of Y. This provides a new approach to results of Amir and Cambern. We then obtain necessary conditions on X and Y for the existence of a bound-two isomorphism; for instance, the existence of open sets U and V of X and Y respectively such that U and V are homeomorphic and XßU and YßV are homeomorphic.  相似文献

A continuous zero-selection f for the Vietoris hyperspace F(X) of the nonempty closed subsets of a space X is a Vietoris continuous map f:F(X)→X which assigns to every nonempty closed subset an isolated point of it. It is well known that a compact space X has a continuous zero-selection if and only if it is an ordinal space, or, equivalently, if X can be mapped onto an ordinal space by a continuous one-to-one surjection. In this paper, we prove that a compact space X has an upper semi-continuous set-valued zero-selection for its Vietoris hyperspace F(X) if and only if X can be mapped onto an ordinal space by a continuous finite-to-one surjection.  相似文献

It is shown that if X is a countably paracompact collectionwise normal space, Y is a Banach space and φ:XY2 is a lower semicontinuous mapping such that φ(x) is Y or a compact convex subset with Cardφ(x)>1 for each xX, then φ admits a continuous selection f:XY such that f(x) is not an extreme point of φ(x) for each xX. This is an affirmative answer to the problem posed by V. Gutev, H. Ohta and K. Yamazaki [V. Gutev, H. Ohta and K. Yamazaki, Selections and sandwich-like properties via semi-continuous Banach-valued functions, J. Math. Soc. Japan 55 (2003) 499-521].  相似文献

The main purpose of this paper is to settle the following problem concerning a product formula for the Tychonoff functor τ, by introducing the notion of w-compact spaces: Characterize a topological space X such that τ(X×Y)=τ(Xτ(Y) for any topological space Y. We also study the properties of w-compact spaces, and it is proved that, for any family {Xα} of w-compact spaces, the product ΠXα is also w-compact and τ(ΠXα)=Πτ(Xα).  相似文献
