We prove a preservation theorem for the class of Valdivia compact spaces, which involves inverse sequences of retractions of a certain kind. Consequently, a compact space of weight?1 is Valdivia compact iff it is the limit of an inverse sequence of metric compacta whose bonding maps are retractions. As a corollary, we show that the class of Valdivia compacta of weight?1 is preserved both under retractions and under open 0-dimensional images. Finally, we characterize the class of all Valdivia compacta in the language of category theory, which implies that this class is preserved under all continuous weight preserving functors.  相似文献

Let Cp(X) be the space of all continuous real-valued functions on a space X, with the topology of pointwise convergence. In this paper we show that Cp(X) is not domain representable unless X is discrete for a class of spaces that includes all pseudo-radial spaces and all generalized ordered spaces. This is a first step toward our conjecture that if X is completely regular, then Cp(X) is domain representable if and only if X is discrete. In addition, we show that if X is completely regular and pseudonormal, then in the function space Cp(X), Oxtoby's pseudocompleteness, strong Choquet completeness, and weak Choquet completeness are all equivalent to the statement “every countable subset of X is closed”.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a new definition of prime ends for domains in metric spaces under rather general assumptions. We compare our prime ends to those of Carathéodory and Näkki. Modulus ends and prime ends, defined by means of the pp-modulus of curve families, are also discussed and related to the prime ends. We provide characterizations of singleton prime ends and relate them to the notion of accessibility of boundary points, and introduce a topology on the prime end boundary. We also study relations between the prime end boundary and the Mazurkiewicz boundary. Generalizing the notion of John domains, we introduce almost John domains, and we investigate prime ends in the settings of John domains, almost John domains and domains which are finitely connected at the boundary.  相似文献

Let X be a compactum and G an upper semi-continuous decomposition of X such that each element of G is the continuous image of an ordered compactum. If the quotient space X/G is the continuous image of an ordered compactum, under what conditions is X also the continuous image of an ordered compactum? Examples around the (non-metric) Hahn-Mazurkiewicz Theorem show that one must place severe conditions on G if one wishes to obtain positive results. We prove that the compactum X is the image of an ordered compactum when each gG has 0-dimensional boundary. We also consider the case when G has only countably many non-degenerate elements. These results extend earlier work of the first named author in a number of ways.  相似文献

We show that any metacompact Moore space is monotonically metacompact and use that result to characterize monotone metacompactness in certain generalized ordered (GO) spaces. We show, for example, that a generalized ordered space with a σ-closed-discrete dense subset is metrizable if and only if it is monotonically (countably) metacompact, that a monotonically (countably) metacompact GO-space is hereditarily paracompact, and that a locally countably compact GO-space is metrizable if and only if it is monotonically (countably) metacompact. We give an example of a non-metrizable LOTS that is monotonically metacompact, thereby answering a question posed by S.G. Popvassilev. We also give consistent examples showing that if there is a Souslin line, then there is one Souslin line that is monotonically countable metacompact, and another Souslin line that is not monotonically countably metacompact.  相似文献

A metric space X is straight if for each finite cover of X by closed sets, and for each real valued function f on X, if f is uniformly continuous on each set of the cover, then f is uniformly continuous on the whole of X. A locally connected space is straight iff it is uniformly locally connected (ULC). It is easily seen that ULC spaces are stable under finite products. On the other hand the product of two straight spaces is not necessarily straight. We prove that the product X×Y of two metric spaces is straight if and only if both X and Y are straight and one of the following conditions holds:
(a)
both X and Y are precompact;
(b)
both X and Y are locally connected;
(c)
one of the spaces is both precompact and locally connected.
In particular, when X satisfies (c), the product X×Z is straight for every straight space Z.Finally, we characterize when infinite products of metric spaces are ULC and we completely solve the problem of straightness of infinite products of ULC spaces.  相似文献

We show that a compact space is I-favorable if, and only if it can be represented as the limit of a σ-complete inverse system of compact metrizable spaces with skeletal bonding maps. We also show that any completely regular I-favorable space can be embedded as a dense subset of the limit of a σ-complete inverse system of separable metrizable spaces with skeletal bonding maps.  相似文献

Let X be a T0-space, we say that X is H-spectral if its T0-compactification is spectral. This paper deal with topological properties of H-spectral spaces. In the case of T1-spaces the T0-compactification coincides with the Wallman compactification. A Bing space is a compact Hausdorff space whose every component is a hereditarily indecomposable continuum. We investigate spaces which are quotients of a Bing space by means of a map which is injective on components. We show that the class of such spaces does not include every compact space, but does properly include the class of compact metric spaces.  相似文献

We study linearly ordered spaces which are Valdivia compact in their order topology. We find an internal characterization of these spaces and we present a counter-example disproving a conjecture posed earlier by the first author. The conjecture asserted that a compact line is Valdivia compact if its weight does not exceed 1, every point of uncountable character is isolated from one side and every closed first countable subspace is metrizable. It turns out that the last condition is not sufficient. On the other hand, we show that the conjecture is valid if the closure of the set of points of uncountable character is scattered. This improves an earlier result of the first author.  相似文献

In this paper we examine the role of the β-space property (equivalently of the MCM-property) in generalized ordered (GO-)spaces and, more generally, in monotonically normal spaces. We show that a GO-space is metrizable iff it is a β-space with a Gδ-diagonal and iff it is a quasi-developable β-space. That last assertion is a corollary of a general theorem that any β-space with a σ-point-finite base must be developable. We use a theorem of Balogh and Rudin to show that any monotonically normal space that is hereditarily monotonically countably metacompact (equivalently, hereditarily a β-space) must be hereditarily paracompact, and that any generalized ordered space that is perfect and hereditarily a β-space must be metrizable. We include an appendix on non-Archimedean spaces in which we prove various results announced without proof by Nyikos.  相似文献

We study CLP-compact spaces (every cover consisting of clopen sets has a finite subcover) and CLP-compact topological groups. In particular, we extend a theorem on CLP-compactness of products from [J. Steprāns, A. Šostak, Restricted compactness properties and their preservation under products, Topology Appl. 101 (3) (2000) 213-229] and we offer various criteria for CLP-compactness for spaces and topological groups, that work particularly well for precompact groups. This allows us to show that arbitrary products of CLP-compact pseudocompact groups are CLP-compact. For every natural n we construct:
(i)
a totally disconnected, n-dimensional, pseudocompact CLP-compact group; and
(ii)
a hereditarily disconnected, n-dimensional, totally minimal, CLP-compact group that can be chosen to be either separable metrizable or pseudocompact (a Hausdorff group G is totally minimal when all continuous surjective homomorphisms GH, with a Hausdorff group H, are open).

A topological space Y is called a Kempisty space if for any Baire space X every function , which is quasi-continuous in the first variable and continuous in the second variable has the Namioka property. Properties of compact Kempisty spaces are studied in this paper. In particular, it is shown that any Valdivia compact is a Kempisty space and the Cartesian product of an arbitrary family of compact Kempisty spaces is a Kempisty space.  相似文献

We present instances of the following phenomenon: if a product of topological spaces satisfies some given compactness property then the factors satisfy a stronger compactness property, except possibly for a small number of factors.The first known result of this kind, a consequence of a theorem by A.H. Stone, asserts that if a product is regular and Lindelöf then all but at most countably many factors are compact. We generalize this result to various forms of final compactness, and extend it to two-cardinal compactness. In addition, our results need no separation axiom.  相似文献

We construct a compact linearly ordered space Kω1 of weight 1, such that the space C(Kω1) is not isomorphic to a Banach space with a projectional resolution of the identity, while on the other hand, Kω1 is a continuous image of a Valdivia compact and every separable subspace of C(Kω1) is contained in a 1-complemented separable subspace. The theory of metrically generated constructs provides us with an excellent setting for the study of function spaces. In this paper we develop a function space theory for metrically generated constructs and, by considering different metrically generated constructs, we capture interesting examples. For instance, for uniform spaces we retrieve the uniformity of uniform convergence and its generalization to Σ-convergence and for UG-spaces we obtain a quantified version of these structures. Our theory also allows for many applications, in particular we are able to characterize the complete subspaces of these function spaces and we succeed in producing an appropriate Ascoli theorem.  相似文献
