We consider two-stage stochastic programming problems with integer recourse. The L-shaped method of stochastic linear programming is generalized to these problems by using generalized Benders decomposition. Nonlinear feasibility and optimality cuts are determined via general duality theory and can be generated when the second stage problem is solved by standard techniques. Finite convergence of the method is established when Gomory’s fractional cutting plane algorithm or a branch-and-bound algorithm is applied.  相似文献

There are two types of random phenomena modeled in stochastic programs. One type is what we may term “external” or “natural” random variables, such as temperature or the roll of a dice. But in many other cases, random variables are used to reflect the behavior of other market participants. This is the case for such as price and demand of a product. Using simple game theoretic models, we demonstrate that stochastic programming may not be appropriate in these cases, as there may be no feasible way to replace the decisions of others by a random variable, and arrive at the correct decision. Hence, this simple note is a warning against certain types of stochastic programming models. Stochastic programming is unproblematic in pure forms of monopoly and perfect competition, and also with respect to external random phenomena. But if market power is involved, such as in oligopolies, the modeling may not be appropriate.  相似文献

We examine the problem of building or fortifying a network to defend against enemy attacks in various scenarios. In particular, we examine the case in which an enemy can destroy any portion of any arc that a designer constructs on the network, subject to some interdiction budget. This problem takes the form of a three-level, two-player game, in which the designer acts first to construct a network and transmit an initial set of flows through the network. The enemy acts next to destroy a set of constructed arcs in the designer’s network, and the designer acts last to transmit a final set of flows in the network. Most studies of this nature assume that the enemy will act optimally; however, in real-world scenarios one cannot necessarily assume rationality on the part of the enemy. Hence, we prescribe optimal network design algorithms for three different profiles of enemy action: an enemy destroying arcs based on capacities, based on initial flows, or acting optimally to minimize our maximum profits obtained from transmitting flows.  相似文献

We consider two-stage risk-averse stochastic optimization problems with a stochastic ordering constraint on the recourse function. Two new characterizations of the increasing convex order relation are provided. They are based on conditional expectations and on integrated quantile functions: a counterpart of the Lorenz function. We propose two decomposition methods to solve the problems and prove their convergence. Our methods exploit the decomposition structure of the risk-neutral two-stage problems and construct successive approximations of the stochastic ordering constraints. Numerical results confirm the efficiency of the methods.  相似文献

The two stage stochastic program with recourse is known to have numerous applications in financial planning, energy modeling, telecommunications systems etc. Notwithstanding its applicability, the two stage stochastic program is limited in its ability to incorporate a decision maker's attitudes towards risk. In this paper we present an extension via the inclusion of a recourse constraint. This results in a convex integrated chance constraint (ICC), which inherits the convexity properties of two stage programs. However, it also inherits some of the difficulties associated with the evaluation of recourse functions. This motivates our study of conditions that may be applicable to algorithms using statistical approximations of such ICC. We present a set of sufficient conditions that these approximations may satisfy in order to assure convergence. Our conditions are satisfied by a wide range of statistical approximations, and we demonstrate that these approximations can be generated within standard algorithmic procedures. This work was supported in part by Grant No. NSF-DDM-9114352 from the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Outer linearization methods for two-stage stochastic linear programs with recourse, such as the L-shaped algorithm, generally apply a single optimality cut on the nonlinear objective at each major iteration, while the multicut version of the algorithm allows for several cuts to be placed at once. In general, the L-shaped algorithm tends to have more major iterations than the multicut algorithm. However, the trade-offs in terms of computational time are problem dependent. This paper investigates the computational trade-offs of adjusting the level of optimality cut aggregation from single cut to pure multicut. Specifically, an adaptive multicut algorithm that dynamically adjusts the aggregation level of the optimality cuts in the master program, is presented and tested on standard large-scale instances from the literature. Computational results reveal that a cut aggregation level that is between the single cut and the multicut can result in substantial computational savings over the single cut method.  相似文献

In this paper we consider stochastic programming problems where the objective function is given as an expected value function. We discuss Monte Carlo simulation based approaches to a numerical solution of such problems. In particular, we discuss in detail and present numerical results for two-stage stochastic programming with recourse where the random data have a continuous (multivariate normal) distribution. We think that the novelty of the numerical approach developed in this paper is twofold. First, various variance reduction techniques are applied in order to enhance the rate of convergence. Successful application of those techniques is what makes the whole approach numerically feasible. Second, a statistical inference is developed and applied to estimation of the error, validation of optimality of a calculated solution and statistically based stopping criteria for an iterative alogrithm. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. A parallel inexact Newton method with a line search is proposed for two-stage quadratic stochastic programs with recourse. A lattice rule is used for the numerical evaluation of multi-dimensional integrals, and a parallel iterative method is used to solve the quadratic programming subproblems. Although the objective only has a locally Lipschitz gradient, global convergence and local superlinear convergence of the method are established. Furthermore, the method provides an error estimate which does not require much extra computation. The performance of the method is illustrated on a CM5 parallel computer. This work was supported by the Australian Research Council and the numerical experiments were done on the Sydney Regional Centre for Parallel Computing CM5.  相似文献

Statistically motivated algorithms for the solution of stochastic programming problems typically suffer from their inability to recognize optimality of a given solution algorithmically. Thus, the quality of solutions provided by such methods is difficult to ascertain. In this paper, we develop methods for verification of optimality conditions within the framework of Stochastic Decomposition (SD) algorithms for two stage linear programs with recourse. Consistent with the stochastic nature of an SD algorithm, we provide termination criteria that are based on statistical verification of traditional (deterministic) optimality conditions. We propose the use of bootstrap methods to confirm the satisfaction of generalized Kuhn-Tucker conditions and conditions based on Lagrange duality. These methods are illustrated in the context of a power generation planning model, and the results are encouraging. This work was supported in part by Grant No. AFOSR-88-0076 from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Grant No. DDM-89-10046 from the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The problem of characterizing the minimum perturbations to parameters in future stages of a discrete dynamic program necessary to change the optimal first policy is considered. Lower bounds on these perturbations are derived and used to establish ranges for the reward functions over which the optimal first policy is robust. A numerical example is presented to illustrate factors affecting the tightness of these bounds.  相似文献

Optimality problems in infinite horizon, discrete time, vector criterion Markov and semi-Markov decision processes are expressed as standard problems of multiobjective linear programming. Processes with discounting, absorbing processes and completely ergodie processes without discounting are investigated. The common properties and special structure of derived multiobjective linear programming problems are overviewed. Computational simplicities associated with these problems in comparison with general multiobjective linear programming problems are discussed. Methods for solving these problems are overviewed and simple numerical examples are given.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the main results on approximate nonlinear programming algorithms investigated by the author. These algorithms are obtained by combining approximation and nonlinear programming algorithms. They are designed for programs in which the evaluation of the objective functions is very difficult so that only their approximate values can be obtained. Therefore, these algorithms are particularly suitable for stochastic programming problems with recourse.Project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.  相似文献

In formulating stochastic programming with recourse models, the parameters of the linear programs are usually assumed to be random variables with known distributions. In this paper, the requirement vector parameter is assumed to be a stochastic process { i (t),tT,i=1,...,m}. The properties of the deterministic equivalents for the cases of the discrete and continuous index setT are derived. The results of the paper are applied to a multi-item production planning model with continuous (periodic) review of the stock on hand of various items.  相似文献

This paper studies the synthesis of controllers for discrete-time, continuous state stochastic systems subject to omega-regular specifications using finite-state abstractions. Omega-regular properties allow specifying complex behaviors and encompass, for example, linear temporal logic. First, we present a synthesis algorithm for minimizing or maximizing the probability that a discrete-time switched stochastic system with a finite number of modes satisfies an omega-regular property. Our approach relies on a finite-state abstraction of the underlying dynamics in the form of a Bounded-parameter Markov Decision Process arising from a finite partition of the system’s domain. Such Markovian abstractions allow for a range of probabilities of transition between states for each selected action representing a mode of the original system. Our method is built upon an analysis of the Cartesian product between the abstraction and a Deterministic Rabin Automaton encoding the specification of interest or its complement. Specifically, we show that synthesis can be decomposed into a qualitative problem, where the so-called greatest permanent winning components of the product automaton are created, and a quantitative problem, which requires maximizing the probability of reaching this component in the worst-case instantiation of the transition intervals. Additionally, we propose a quantitative metric for measuring the quality of the designed controller with respect to the continuous abstracted states and devise a specification-guided domain partition refinement heuristic with the objective of reaching a user-defined optimality target. Next, we present a method for computing control policies for stochastic systems with a continuous set of available inputs. In this case, the system is assumed to be affine in input and disturbance, and we derive a technique for solving the qualitative and quantitative problems in the resulting finite-state abstractions of such systems. For this, we introduce a new type of abstractions called Controlled Interval-valued Markov Chains. Specifically, we show that the greatest permanent winning component of such abstractions are found by appropriately partitioning the continuous input space in order to generate a bounded-parameter Markov decision process that accounts for all possible qualitative transitions between the finite set of states. Then, the problem of maximizing the probability of reaching these components is cast as a (possibly non-convex) optimization problem over the continuous set of available inputs. A metric of quality for the synthesized controller and a partition refinement scheme are described for this framework as well. Finally, we present a detailed case study.  相似文献

We propose a class of partially observable multistage stochastic programs and describe an algorithm for solving this class of problems. We provide a Bayesian update of a belief-state vector, extend the stochastic programming formulation to incorporate the belief state, and characterize saddle-function properties of the corresponding cost-to-go function. Our algorithm is a derivative of the stochastic dual dynamic programming method.  相似文献

This note addresses the time aggregation approach to ergodic finite state Markov decision processes with uncontrollable states. We propose the use of the time aggregation approach as an intermediate step toward constructing a transformed MDP whose state space is comprised solely of the controllable states. The proposed approach simplifies the iterative search for the optimal solution by eliminating the need to define an equivalent parametric function, and results in a problem that can be solved by simpler, standard MDP algorithms.  相似文献

Separable sublinear functions are used to provide upper bounds on the recourse function of a stochastic program. The resulting problem's objective involves the inf-convolution of convex functions. A dual of this problem is formulated to obtain an implementable procedure to calculate the bound. Function evaluations for the resulting convex program only require a small number of single integrations in contrast with previous upper bounds that require a number of function evaluations that grows exponentially in the number of random variables. The sublinear bound can often be used when other suggested upper bounds are intractable. Computational results indicate that the sublinear approximation provides good, efficient bounds on the stochastic program objective value. This research has been partially supported by the National Science Foundation. Expected recourse functions in linear two-stage stochastic programs with mixed-integer second stage are approximated by estimating the underlying probability distribution via empirical measures. Under mild conditions, almost sure uniform convergence of the empirical means to the original expected recourse function is established.  相似文献

Linear stochastic programming problems with first order stochastic dominance (FSD) constraints are non-convex. For their mixed 0-1 linear programming formulation we present two convex relaxations based on second order stochastic dominance (SSD). We develop necessary and sufficient conditions for FSD, used to obtain a disjunctive programming formulation and to strengthen one of the SSD-based relaxations.  相似文献
