Summary This paper considers the finite element approximation of the semi-definite Neumann problem: –·(u)=f in a curved domain n (n=2 or 3), on and , a given constant, for dataf andg satisfying the compatibility condition . Due to perturbation of domain errors ( h ) the standard Galerkin approximation to the above problem may not have a solution. A remedy is to perturb the right hand side so that a discrete form of the compatibility condition holds. Summary We prove the existence of a real valued random field with parameters in thed-dimensional cubic lattice, such that the distribution of the level set of this random field is a Gibbs state for the nearest neighbour ferromagnetic Ising model. Summary Let be the difference of a pair of adjacent eigen-values of the differential equation (1) for the spheroidal functions. Until now only the two first terms of the asymptotic expansion (2) of for large *2=–2 had been known. We study recursive inclusionsx n+1 G(x n ). For instance, such systems appear for discrete finite-difference inclusionsx n+1 G (x n) whereG :=1+F. The discrete viability kernel ofG , i.e., the largest discrete viability domain, can be an internal approximation of the viability kernel ofK underF. We study discrete and finite dynamical systems. In the Lipschitz case we get a generalization to differential inclusions of the Euler and Runge-Kutta methods. We prove first that the viability kernel ofK underF can be approached by a sequence of discrete viability kernels associated withx n+1 (xn) where (x) =x + F(x) + (ML/2) 2. Summary We consider the problem of comparing large finite and infinite systems with locally interacting components, and present a general comparison scheme for the case when the infinite system is nonergodic. We show that this scheme holds for some specific models. One of these is critical branching random walk onZ d . A procedure is described for preventing cycling in active-set methods for linearly constrained optimization, including the simplex method. The key ideas are a limited acceptance of infeasibilities in all variables, and maintenance of a working feasibility tolerance that increases over a long sequence of iterations. The additional work per iteration is nominal, and stalling cannot occur with exact arithmetic.
