The critical step in the determination of water solubilitiy (S w) and octanol-water partition coefficient (K ow) of hydrophobic organic chemicals by using the generator-column technique and the slow-stirring procedure, respectively, is the exact quantification of the low water-phase concentrations of the substances under investigation. We have tested the applicability of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography with seven chlorinated organic compounds. The substances cover a S w range from 500 mg/L to 7 ng/L and a log K ow range from 3 to 8. The results show that SPME can be a valuable alternative to common preconcentration techniques in the quantification of hydrophobic organics in pure and octanol-saturated water. The apparent SPME distribution constants K SPME (obtained with the 100 μm-PDMS fiber for analyte’s partitioning between fiber coating and aqueous sample) do not correlate directly with octanol/water partition coefficients and thus cannot be recommended as a surrogate parameter for K ow. The applicability of the retention index system to hcadspacc solid phase microextraxtion (HS–SPME) was investigated. In headspace SPME, the two equilibria gas phase/matrix and fiber coating/gas phase have to he considered. In this paper the equilibrium fiber coating/gas phase is discussed separately to characterize it more detailed and to investigate several methodical aspects. Therefore, the different distribution constants Kfiber/gas of n-alkanes, which were used for reference compounds, were related to their Kováts retention indices. The validity of the derived linear relationship log Kfiber/gas versus retention index I is demonstrated for various examples. This relation is helpful for the assessment of distribution constants of substances not available and for the choice of a suitable fiber coating. Furthermore, quantification of analytes in the gas phase can be done without authentic substances.  相似文献

We studied the sorption of amphetamine as a model drug to represent small, polar organic cations to a new SPME coating combining C18 and propylsulfonic acid. This combination of hydrophobic and strong cation exchange (SCX) groups was compared to conventional SPME fibers with polyacrylate (PA) or C18 coating. The affinity of amphetamine at physiological pH (PBS) was 20 to 180 times greater for the new C18/SCX coating than for C18 alone and PA of different coating thickness. As amphetamine is a base and >99% protonated at physiological pH, this enhanced affinity is attributed to the ion-exchange phase in the coating. Tests at pH above the pKa of amphetamine show that, when normalized to the coating volume, neutral amphetamine also has a higher affinity compared to PA. As ion-exchange groups are not unlimitedly present in the coating, amphetamine isotherms level off to a saturation concentration on the C18/SCX fiber at the highest tested aqueous concentrations. Also, other cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+) compete for the SCX sites and decrease the sorption coefficients, e.g. by 1.7 log units when comparing Milli-Q water with PBS. The C18/SCX fiber provides improved sensitivity over some of the classic SPME fibers. However, care should be taken near the cation exchange capacity of the fiber and the fiber should be calibrated in an appropriate matrix so as to eliminate competition effects.  相似文献

In the study, nanoporous array anodic alumina (NAAA) prepared by a simple, rapid and stable two-step anodic oxidization method was introduced as a novel solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating. The regular nanoporous array structure and chemical composition of NAAA SPME fiber coating was characterized and validated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. Compared with the commercial polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) SPME fiber coating, NAAA SPME fiber coating achieved the higher enrichment capability (1.7–4.7 folds) for the mixed standards of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The selectivity for volatile alcohols by NAAA SPME fiber coating demonstrated an increasing trend with the increasing polarity of alcohols caused by the gradually shortening carbon chains from 1-undecanol to 1-heptanol or the isomerization of carbon chains of some typical volatile alcohols including 2-ethyl hexanol, 1-octanol, 2-phenylethanol, 1-phenylethanol, 5-undecanol, 2-undecanol and 1-undecanol. Finally, NAAA SPME fiber coating was originally applied for the analysis of biological VOCs of Bailan flower, stinkbug and orange peel samples coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) detection. Thirty, twenty-seven and forty-four VOCs of Bailan flower, stinkbug and orange peel samples were sampled and identified, respectively. Moreover, the contents of trace 1-octanol and nonanal of real orange peel samples were quantified for the further method validation with satisfactory recoveries of 106.5 and 120.5%, respectively. This work proposed a sensitive, rapid, reliable and convenient analytical method for the potential study of trace and small molecular biological VOCs by the novel NAAA SPME fiber coating.  相似文献

ZnO nanorod array coating is a novel kind of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating which shows good extraction capability due to the nanostructure. To prepare the composite coating is a good way to improve the extraction capability. In this paper, the ZnO nanorod array polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite SPME fiber coating has been prepared and its extraction capability for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been studied by headspace sampling the typical volatile mixed standard solution of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX). Improved detection limit and good linear ranges have been achieved for this composite SPME fiber coating. Also, it is found that the composite SPME fiber coating shows good extraction selectivity to the VOCs with alkane radicals.  相似文献

Electrochemically co‐deposited sol–gel/Cu nanocomposites have been introduced as a novel, simple and single‐step technique for preparation of solid‐phase microextraction (SPME) coating to extract methadone (MDN) (a synthetic opioid) in urine samples. The porous surface structure of the sol–gel/Cu nanocomposite coating was revealed by scanning electron microscopy. Direct immersion SPME followed by HPLC‐UV determination was employed. The factors influencing the SPME procedure, such as the salt content, desorption solvent type, pH and equilibration time, were optimized. The best conditions were obtained with no salt content, acetonitrile as desorption solvent type, pH 9 and 10 min equilibration time. The calibration graphs for urine samples showed good linearity. The detection limit was about 0.2 ng mL−1. Also, the novel method for preparation of nanocomposite fiber was compared with previously reported techniques for MDN determination. The results show that the novel nanocomposite fiber has relatively high extraction efficiency.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from in vitro cultures may reveal information on species and metabolism. Owing to low nmol L−1 concentration ranges, pre‐concentration techniques are required for gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) based analyses. This study was intended to compare the efficiency of established micro‐extraction techniques – solid‐phase micro‐extraction (SPME) and needle‐trap micro‐extraction (NTME) – for the analysis of complex VOC patterns. For SPME, a 75 μm Carboxen®/polydimethylsiloxane fiber was used. The NTME needle was packed with divinylbenzene, Carbopack X and Carboxen 1000. The headspace was sampled bi‐directionally. Seventy‐two VOCs were calibrated by reference standard mixtures in the range of 0.041–62.24 nmol L−1 by means of GC–MS. Both pre‐concentration methods were applied to profile VOCs from cultures of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis. Limits of detection ranged from 0.004 to 3.93 nmol L−1 (median = 0.030 nmol L−1) for NTME and from 0.001 to 5.684 nmol L−1 (median = 0.043 nmol L−1) for SPME. NTME showed advantages in assessing polar compounds such as alcohols. SPME showed advantages in reproducibility but disadvantages in sensitivity for N‐containing compounds. Micro‐extraction techniques such as SPME and NTME are well suited for trace VOC profiling over cultures if the limitations of each technique is taken into account.  相似文献

The sensitivity and precision of headspace solid-phase micro extraction (HS-SPME) at an analyte solution temperature (T as) of +35 °C and a fiber temperature (T fiber) of +5 °C were compared with those for HS-SPME at T as and T fiber of −20 °C for analysis of the volatile organic compounds benzene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, toluene, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, and tetrachloroethylene in water samples. The effect of simultaneous fiber cooling and analyte solution freezing during extraction was studied. The compounds are of different hydrophobicity, with octanol/water partition coefficients (Kow) ranging from 126 and 2511. During a first set of experiments the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) SPME fiber was cooled to +5 °C with simultaneous heating of the aqueous analyte solution to +35 °C. During a second set of experiments, both SPME fiber holder and samples were placed in a deep freezer maintained at −20 °C for a total extraction time of 30 min. After approximately 2 min the analyte solution in the vial began to freeze from the side inwards and from the bottom upwards. After approximately 30 min the solution was completely frozen. Analysis of VOC was performed by coupling HS-SPME to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In general, i.e. except for tetrachloroethylene, the sensitivity of HS-SPME increased with increasing compound hydrophobicity at both analyte solution and fiber temperatures. At T as of +35 °C and T fiber of +5 °C detection limits of HS-SPME were 0.5 μg L−1 for benzene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene, 0.125 μg L−1 for toluene, and 0.025 μg L−1 for ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, and o-xylene. In the experiments with T as and T fiber of −20 °C, detection limits were reduced for compounds of low hydrophobicity (Kow<501), for example benzene, toluene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and trichloroethylene. In the concentration range 0.5–62.5 μg L−1, the sensitivity of HS-SPME was enhanced by a factor of approximately two for all compounds by performing the extraction at −20 °C. A possible explanation is that freezing of the water sample results in higher concentration of the target compounds in the residual liquid phase and gas phase (freezing-out), combined with enhanced adsorption of the compounds by the cooled fiber. The precision of HS-SPME, expressed as the relative standard deviation and the linearity of the regression lines, is increased for more hydrophobic compounds (Kow>501) by simultaneous direct fiber cooling and freezing of analyte solution. Background contamination during analysis is reduced significantly by avoiding the use of organic solvents.  相似文献

The possibility and the efficiency of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for determination of distribution coefficients of polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs) in aqueous samples are presented in this study. Influence of sample extraction conditions, extraction time, stirring rate, pH, salinity and temperature were tested to optimize extraction efficiency. Three types of fibre sorbent layers, PDMS, PDMS/DVB and PA, were tested and fibre/water distribution coefficients, Kf s , were calculated. The extraction efficiency for PANHs increased in the order PDMS?<?PA?<?PDMS/DVB. Values of log?Kfs ranged from 0.2 to 2.7 for PDMS, from 0.4 to 3.6 for PA and from 1.4 to 4.4 for PDMS/DVB. The values of log?Kfs were correlated with octanol/water distribution coefficients log?Kow . The relationship between log?Kfs and log?Kow shows linear response with regression coefficient in the range of 0.985 and 0.997.  相似文献

This work presents the usefulness of five different solid-phase microextraction fibers in the screening of volatile organic compound (VOC) traces in air samples. The performances of these fibers are compared by studying the sorption kinetics in an equimolar gaseous mixture of eleven VOCs. For each fiber, static and dynamic sampling are compared. It is shown that repeatability is better for the dynamic mode (less than 6% for dynamic sampling and 10% for static sampling). The equilibrium time and the sensitivity vary considerably from one fiber type to another. As an example, the classical polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating presented the shortest equilibration time (5 min) but also the poorest sensitivity, whereas the PDMS-Carboxen showed the longest extraction time but the greatest sensitivity. The estimation of the quantity of VOCs fixed on the target fiber allows for the determination of the different affinities of the compounds with the involved sorbent and relates them with physicochemical properties of the molecules. Competitive sorption is observed for the fibers involved with the adsorption process (i.e., PDMS-divinylbenzene and PDMS-Carboxen fibers). These competitions can lead to SPME calibration problems and thus bad quantitative analysis.  相似文献

In this work cobalt oxide nanoparticles were introduced for preparation of a novel solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating. Chemical bath deposition (CBD) technique was used in order for synthesis and immobilization of the Co3O4 nanomaterials on a Pt wire for fabrication of SPME fiber. The prepared cobalt oxide coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The fiber was evaluated for the extraction of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) in combination with GC–MS. A simplex optimization method was used to optimize the factors affecting the extraction efficiency. Under optimized conditions, the proposed fiber showed extraction efficiencies comparable to those of a commercial polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fiber toward the BTEX compounds. The repeatability of the fiber and its reproducibility, expressed as relative standard deviation (RSD), were lower than about 11%. No significant change was observed in the extraction efficiency of the new SPME fiber after over 50 extractions. The fiber was successfully applied to the determination of BTEX compounds in real samples. The proposed nanostructure cobalt oxide fiber is a promising alternative to the commercial fibers as it is robust, inexpensive and easily prepared.  相似文献

In this paper, bamboo charcoals were modified using Fe3O4 nanosheets for the first time. The composites, as a novel solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating, were used for the extraction of seven polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in environmental water samples. The extraction factors (stirring rate, extraction time, and ionic strength) and desorption factors (desorption time and desorption temperature) of the fibers were systematically investigated and optimized. Under optimum conditions, the linear range was 1–1000 ng L−1. Based on the ratio of chromatographic signal to base line noise (S N−1 = 3), the limits of detection (LODs) can reach 0.25–0.62 ng L−1. The novel method was successful in the analysis of PBDEs in real environmental water samples. The results indicate that bamboo charcoal/Fe3O4 as an SPME coating material coupled with gas chromatography–negative chemical ionization-mass spectrometry is an excellent method for the routine analysis of PBDEs at trace levels in environmental water samples.  相似文献

The commercial solid phase microextraction (SPME) fibers are not stable enough in organic solvent and tend to swell and strip off from the silica fiber in the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) mobile phase, and therefore the application of SPME coupled online with HPLC is limited. In this study, an SPME fiber coated with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), prepared by means of electrophoretic deposition, was coupled on line to HPLC for the determination of four endocrine-disrupting compounds, i.e. bisphenol A (BPA), estrone (E1), 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) and octylphenol (OP), in aqueous samples. The results showed that the SWCNTs coating on the prepared fiber did not swell and strip off from the platinum fiber throughout the experiment, thus indicating a high resistance to the HPLC mobile phase, the mixture of water and acetonitrile. The SWCNTs fiber had similar (for OP) or higher (for BPA, EE2 and E1) extraction efficiencies than the commonly used polyacrylate fiber, and had a lifetime of more than 120 operation times. Under the optimized conditions, the linearity of the proposed method was 1.0-30.0 μg/L for BPA and OP and 3.0-90.0 μg/L for E1 and EE2. The limits of detection (LODs; S/N = 3) and limits of quantification (LOQs; S/N = 10) of the method were 0.32-0.52 μg/L and 1.06-1.72 μg/L, respectively. Repeatability for one fiber (n = 3) was in the range of 1.3-7.1% and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (n = 3) was in the range of 1.6-8.4%. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of spiked tap water and seawater samples with recoveries from 81.8 to 97.3%.  相似文献

A headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) method has been developed for the determination of iodinated trihalomethanes (ITHMs) in treated water samples. Mixed THMs (bromochloroido-, bromodiiodo-, chlorodiiodo-, dibromoiodo- and dichloroiodo-) were previously synthesized since commercial standards are not available. HS-SPME has shorter equilibration times than direct SPME, a cleaner background and a longer fiber life. Experimental parameters such as the selection of SPME coatings, sample volume, extraction time and addition of salts were studied. The Carbowax-divinylbenzene fiber appears to be the most suitable for the determination of ITHMs. Analytical parameters such as linearity, limit of detection and precision were also evaluated. HS-SPME was compared to liquid-liquid microextraction for the analyses of spiked treated water samples, obtaining a good agreement. It is concluded that HS-SPME has a great potential for drinking water analysis.  相似文献

A SPME-HPLC-post-column fluorescent derivatization method for the direct determination of saxitoxin (STX), the most potent paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxin, in water has been developed. Commercially available SPME devices with 50 microm Carbowax templated resin (CW/TPR) coating was found to be able to pre-concentrate STX from aqueous media. A special pre-conditioning treatment of soaking the SPME coating in 0.1 M NaOH solution significantly improved the extraction efficiency. The optimal pH for the SPME process is 8.1 and the equilibration time is 40 min. The partition coefficient, K, of the distribution of STX between the SPME coating and the aqueous media was measured to be 2.99 +/- 0.04 x 10(3). Extracted toxin on the SPME stationary phase was difficult to be desorbed by the HPLC mobile phase under dynamic desorption mode. A static ion-pairing desorption technique using a desorption solvent mixture of 20 mM sodium 1-heptanesulfonate in 30% aqueous acetonitrile acidified with 50 mM sulfuric acid was developed to overcome this problem. The method detection limit and repeatability achieved by this SPME-HPLC method were 0.11 ng ml(-1) and 3.7%, respectively, with a sample volume of just 5 ml of water. This analytical method is adequate for the monitoring of the PSP toxin in fresh/drinking waters. However, serious interference was observed when this technique was applied to saline water samples. This is probably due to competition of sodium ions with the cationic STX for absorption into the SPME stationary phase.  相似文献

In this paper, Zinc oxide (ZnO) hybridized with graphite-like C3N4 (ZnO/g-C3N4) nanoflowers based solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating was prepared on fiber using in situ hydrothermal growth method for gas chromatographic -mass spectrum (GC- MS) separation and analysis target analytes in complex matrixes for the first time. The proposed hybrid ZnO/g-C3N4 fiber exhibited wide linearity for the pesticide residues in range of 0.003–5.0 ng mL−1. The limits of detection (LOD) were 0.001–0.0025 ng mL−1. The relative standard deviation (RSD) for three replicate extractions using one fiber was ranged from 2.3% to 7.6%. The fiber to fiber RSD was 5.3–11.3% (n = 3). This method was successfully used for simultaneous determination of nine pesticide residues in cucumber, pear, Green tea and Minjiang water with satisfactory recoveries of 79.1–103.5%. These results indicated that the ZnO/g-C3N4 composite provided a promising alternative in sample pretreatment and analysis.  相似文献

Solid phase microextraction (SPME) was used as the sample introduction technique for high-speed isothermal GC. An injector dedicated for SPME fiber injection was designed and built. The injector was operated in two modes, continuously heated and flash heated. The latter mode proved to be better for high-speed separations. The injector was then used for sample introduction in separation of BTEX. When sampling directly from water with a fiber having a 56 μm thick poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating, the BTEX components were separated under isothermal conditions in ca. 18 s. A fiber with a thinner coating (15 μm) enabled the separation to be completed in ca. 12 s when sampling from headspace. In both cases the results were highly reproducible, as measured by the estimated values of the relative standard deviation.  相似文献
