We study the question of what properties of nilpotent groups are shared by their abelianizations. We identify two such properties—that of being a π-torsion group, where π is a family of primes, and that of having qth roots, for some prime q. We use these properties to provide simplified proofs of the following theorems in the localization of nilpotent groups.

Let H, K be subgroups of the nilpotent group N and let P be a family of primes. Then [H, K] P = [HP, Kp]

Let the group G act on the nilpotent group N. Then G acts compatibly on Np andG i N)P = ΓG i(Np).

The second theorem above is then applied to the study of the localization of relative groups, in the sense of [4].  相似文献

We analyze k-stage formality and relate resonance with this type of formality properties. For instance, we show that, for a finitely generated nilpotent group that is k-stage formal, the resonance varieties are trivial up to degree k. We also show that the cohomology ring, truncated up to degree k+1, of a finitely generated nilpotent, k-stage formal group is generated in degree 1; this criterion is necessary and sufficient for a finitely generated, 2-step nilpotent group to be k-stage formal. We compute resonance varieties for Heisenberg-type groups and deduce the degree of partial formality for this class of groups.  相似文献

In [E. Baro, M. Otero, On o-minimal homotopy, Quart. J. Math. (2009) 15pp, in press (doi:10.1093/qmath/hap011)] o-minimal homotopy was developed for the definable category, proving o-minimal versions of the Hurewicz theorems and the Whitehead theorem. Here, we extend these results to the category of locally definable spaces, for which we introduce homology and homotopy functors. We also study the concept of connectedness in ?-definable groups — which are examples of locally definable spaces. We show that the various concepts of connectedness associated to these groups, which have appeared in the literature, are non-equivalent.  相似文献

We define strong cofibrations and fibrations in suitably enriched categories using the relative homotopy extension resp. lifting property. We prove a general pairing result, which for topological spaces specializes to the well-known pushout-product theorem for cofibrations. Strong cofibrations and fibrations give rise to cofibration and fibration categories in the sense of homotopical algebra. We discuss various examples; in particular, we deduce that the category of chain complexes with chain equivalences and the category of categories with equivalences are symmetric monoidal proper closed model categories. In this paper we construct a uniform Alexander-Spanier cohomology functor from the category of pairs of uniform spaces to the category of abelian groups. We show that this functor satisfies all Eilenberg-Steenrod axioms on the category of pairs of precompact uniform spaces, is precompact uniform shape invariant and intrinsically, in terms of uniform structures, describes the Alexander-Spanier cohomology groups of compactifications of completely regular spaces.  相似文献

We propose a generalization of Sullivan’s de Rham homotopy theory to non-simply connected spaces. The formulation is such that the real homotopy type of a manifold should be the closed tensor dg-category of flat bundles on it much the same as the real homotopy type of a simply connected manifold is the de Rham algebra in original Sullivan’s theory. We prove the existence of a model category structure on the category of small closed tensor dg-categories and as a most simple case, confirm an equivalence between the homotopy category of spaces whose fundamental groups are finite and whose higher homotopy groups are finite dimensional rational vector spaces and the homotopy category of small closed tensor dg-categories satisfying certain conditions.  相似文献

It is known algebraically that any abelian group is a direct sum of a divisible group and a reduced group (see Theorem 21.3 of [L. Fuchs, Infinite Abelian Groups, vol. I, Academic Press, New York-London, 1970]). In this paper, conditions to split off rational parts in homotopy types from a given space are studied in terms of a variant of Hurewicz map, say and generalised Gottlieb groups. This yields decomposition theorems on rational homotopy types of Hopf spaces, T-spaces and Gottlieb spaces, which has been known in various situations, especially for spaces with finiteness conditions.  相似文献

We construct bi-invariant total orderings of residually torsion-free nilpotent groups by using Chen's iterated integrals. This construction can be seen as a generalization of the Magnus ordering of the free groups, and equivalent to the classical construction which uses an iteration of central extensions. Our geometric construction provides a connection between bi-orderings and the rational homotopy theory.  相似文献

Let D be the category of pro-sets (or abelian pro-groups). It is proved that for any Grothendieck site X, there exists a reflector from the category of precosheaves on X with values in D to the full subcategory of cosheaves. In the case of precosheaves on topological spaces, it is proved that any precosheaf is smooth, i.e. is locally isomorphic to a cosheaf. Constant cosheaves are constructed, and there are established connections with shape theory.  相似文献

We consider the following questions: when can we extend a continuous endofunctor on Top the category of topological spaces to a fibrewise continuous endofunctor on Top(2) the category of continuous maps? If this is true, does such fibrewise continuous endofunctor preserve fibrations? In this paper, we define Fib the topological category of cell-wise trivial fibre spaces over polyhedra and show that any continuous endofunctor on Top induces a fibrewise continuous endofunctor on Fib preserving the class of quasi-fibrations.  相似文献

This paper presents a study of one-ended locally finite CW-complexes with proper L-S category ?2. We detect the class of towers of groups which can be the fundamental pro-group of a space of proper L-S category 2. A second part of the paper is concerned with two-dimensional CW-complexes. For these, we give different characterizations of spaces with proper L-S category ?2.  相似文献

For a set of prime numbers P, we study when the P-localization of an Eilenberg-Mac Lane space with virtually nilpotent fundamental group is again aspherical. While investigating this problem, we devote special attention to infra-nilmanifolds.We prove that the P-localization of an orientable infra-nilmanifold is aspherical if and only if its holonomy group is P-torsion. The same holds for non-orientable infra-nilmanifolds if 2 is in P. We also develop computational techniques to check preservation of asphericity. These are explicitly applied to show that the P-localization of a non-orientable infra-nilmanifold of dimension ?3 is always aspherical. We point out that this is no longer true from dimension 4 onwards.  相似文献

We give some structure to the Brown–Peterson cohomology (or its p-completion) of a wide class of spaces. The class of spaces are those with Morava K-theory even-dimensional. We can say that the Brown–Peterson cohomology is even-dimensional (concentrated in even degrees) and is flat as a BP*-module for the category of finitely presented BP*(BP)-modules. At first glance this would seem to be a very restricted class of spaces but the world abounds with naturally occurring examples: Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces, loops of finite Postnikov systems, classifying spaces of most finite groups whose Morava K-theory is known (including the symmetric groups), QS2n, BO(n), MO(n), BO, Im J, etc. We finish with an explicit algebraic construction of the Brown–Peterson cohomology of a product of Eilenberg–Mac Lane spaces and a general Künneth isomorphism applicable to our situation.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the theory of higher order homotopy coalgebras as a collection of spaces between co-H-spaces and suspensions, which dualizes Stasheff's theory of Ak-spaces when these are defined through Ak-structures. Moreover we extend two Berstein-Hilton theorems which deal with the primitive homotopy type of a suspension and the class of a suspension map, respectively.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper we obtain classification and extension theorems for uniform spaces, using the ?ech cohomology theory based on the finite uniform coverings, and study the associated cohomological dimension theory. In particular, we extend results for the cohomological dimension theory on compact Hausdorff spaces or compact metric spaces to those for our cohomological dimension theory on uniform spaces.  相似文献

We consider the notion of dimension in four categories: the category of (unbounded) separable metric spaces and (metrically proper) Lipschitz maps, and the category of (unbounded) separable metric spaces and (metrically proper) uniform maps. A unified treatment is given to the large scale dimension and the small scale dimension. We show that in all categories a space has dimension zero if and only if it is equivalent to an ultrametric space. Also, 0-dimensional spaces are characterized by means of retractions to subspaces. There is a universal zero-dimensional space in all categories. In the Lipschitz Category spaces of dimension zero are characterized by means of extensions of maps to the unit 0-sphere. Any countable group of asymptotic dimension zero is coarsely equivalent to a direct sum of cyclic groups. We construct uncountably many examples of coarsely inequivalent ultrametric spaces.  相似文献

Let M denote a two-dimensional Moore space (so ), with fundamental group G. The M-cellular spaces are those one can build from M by using wedges, push-outs, and telescopes (and hence all pointed homotopy colimits). The issue we address here is the characterization of the class of M-cellular spaces by means of algebraic properties derived from the group G. We show that the cellular type of the fundamental group and homological information does not suffice, and one is forced to study a certain universal extension.  相似文献

We show that pulling back along an open map preserves all colimits in the category of weak Hausdorff k-spaces. We also show that the category of open maps over a weak Hausdorff k-space is a convenient category of fibre spaces.  相似文献

The Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of a space is a homotopy invariant. Cone-decompositions are used for giving upper-bound for Lusternik-Schnirelmann categories of topological spaces. Singhof has determined the Lusternik-Schnirelmann categories of the unitary groups. In this paper I give two cone-decompositions of each unitary group for alternative proofs of Singhof's result. One cone-decomposition is easy. The other is closely related to Miller's filtration and Yokota's cellular decomposition of the unitary groups.  相似文献
