This article reports on a self-directed, school-based, practice-based professional development (PD) experience aimed at helping elementary school teachers to develop knowledge and expertise in inquiry-based teaching of mathematics. It discusses the characteristics of the self-directed orientation of this PD that supported the teachers’ learning, the nature of the inquiry-based knowledge they constructed, and the impact on their teaching. It highlights the centrality of agency, practical knowledge, and situated learning in this PD approach. The findings suggest that this approach can help mathematics teachers who want to be the architect of their own learning to transform their classrooms in meaningful and desirable ways.  相似文献

In the European educational context, reports by expert groups have identified the necessity of a renewed pedagogy in schools to overcome deficits in science and mathematics teaching and to raise the standards of scientific and mathematical literacy. Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is considered the method of choice. However, it remains open to what extent IBL is actually used in day-to-day teaching. In the study presented here we elaborate—from the perspective of teachers—the current status of IBL in day-to-day teaching. Further, we explore what problems teachers anticipate when implementing IBL. In order to gain insight into the wide spectrum of practices in mathematics and science teaching in relation to IBL, a baseline study using teacher questionnaires was carried out in the 12 participating countries. We present selected results from this study that for the first time provides an overview of teachers’ beliefs and their reports on the current use of IBL practices in a European context. The results facilitate a cross-cultural comparison on the potentials and challenges of implementing IBL from the perspective of practicing teachers. Furthermore, the study reveals considerable differences between the teaching of mathematics and science subjects. The findings of the baseline study can serve as a reference line against which the impact of interventions to improve the quality of teaching and learning can be evaluated.  相似文献

Previous studies have produced several typologies of teacher questions in mathematics. Probing questions that ask students to explain are often included in the types of questions. However, only rare studies have created subtypes for probing questions or investigated how questioning differs depending on whether technology is used or not. The aims of this study are to elaborate on different ways of asking students to give explanations in inquiry-based mathematics teaching and to investigate whether questioning in GeoGebra lessons differs from questioning in other lessons. Data was collected by video recording 29 Finnish mathematics student teachers’ lessons in secondary and upper secondary schools. The lesson videos were coded for the student teachers’ probing questions. After this, categories for the types of probing questions were created, which is elaborated in this paper. It was found that the student teachers who used GeoGebra emphasized conceptual probing questions during the explore phase of a lesson slightly more than the other student teachers.  相似文献

Beliefs constitute a central part of a person’s professional competencies and are crucial to the perception of situations as they influence our choice of actions. This paper focuses on epistemological beliefs about the nature of mathematics of future primary teachers from an international perspective. The data reported are part of a larger sample originating from the TEDS-M study which compares primary mathematics teacher education in 15 countries. In this paper we examine the pattern of beliefs of future teachers aiming to teach mathematics at primary level. We explore whether and to what extent beliefs concerning the nature of mathematics are influenced by cultural factors, in our case the extent to which a country’s culture can be characterized by an individualistic versus collectivistic orientation according to Hofstede’s terminology. In the first part of the paper, the literature on epistemological beliefs is reviewed and the role of culture and individualism/collectivism on the formation of beliefs concerning the nature of mathematics will be discussed. In the empirical part, means and distributions of belief ratings will be reported. Finally, multilevel analyses explore how much of the variation of belief preferences between countries can be explained by the individualistic orientation of a country.  相似文献

Reform-oriented approaches to mathematics instruction view struggle as critical to learning; however, research suggests many teachers resist providing opportunities for students to struggle. Ninety-three early-years Australian elementary teachers completed a questionnaire about their understanding of the role of struggle in the mathematics classroom. Thematic analysis of data revealed that most teachers (75 %) held positive beliefs about struggle, with four overlapping themes emerging: building resilience, central to learning mathematics, developing problem solving skills and facilitating peer-to-peer learning. Many of the remaining teachers (16 %) held what constituted conditionally positive beliefs about struggle, emphasising that the level of challenge provided needed to be suitable for a given student and adequately scaffolded. The overwhelmingly positive characterisation of student struggle was surprising given prior research but consistent with our contention that an emphasis on growth mindsets in educational contexts over the last decade has seen a shift in teachers’ willingness to embrace struggle.  相似文献

Most science departments offer compulsory mathematics courses to their students with the expectation that students can apply their experience from the mathematics courses to other fields of study, including science. The current study first aims to investigate the views of pre-service science teachers of science-teaching preparation degrees and their expectations regarding the difficulty level of mathematics courses in science-teaching education programmes. Second, the study investigates changes and the reasons behind the changes in their interest regarding mathematics after completing these courses. Third, the current study seeks to reveal undergraduate science teachers’ opinions regarding the contribution of undergraduate mathematics courses to their professional development. Being qualitative in nature, this study was a case study. According to the results, almost all of the students considered that undergraduate mathematics courses were ‘difficult’ because of the complex and intensive content of the courses and their poor background mathematical knowledge. Moreover, the majority of science undergraduates mentioned that mathematics would contribute to their professional development as a science teacher. On the other hand, they declared a negative change in their attitude towards mathematics after completing the mathematics courses due to continuous failure at mathematics and their teachers’ lack of knowledge in terms of teaching mathematics.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study shows that using authentic contexts for learning differential equations in a differentiation-by-interest setting can enhance students’ beliefs about the relevance of mathematics. The students in this study were studying advanced mathematics (wiskunde D) at upper secondary school in the Netherlands. These students are often not aware of the relevance of the mathematics they have to learn in school. More insights into the application of mathematics in other sciences can be beneficial for these students in terms of preparation for their future study and career. A course differentiating by student interest with new context-rich curriculum materials was developed in order to enhance students’ beliefs about the relevance of mathematics. The intervention aimed at teaching differential equations through guided small-group tasks in scientific, medical or economical contexts. The results show that students’ beliefs about the relevance of mathematics improved, and they appreciated experiencing how the mathematics was applied in real-life situations.  相似文献

This study examines co-learning of mathematics practicing teachers and mathematics teaching researchers through parallel lesson study in China. Two cases are illustrated and compared to highlight what practicing teachers and teaching researchers learned. The practicing teachers developed their competence in identifying instructional objectives, improving instructional process, selecting and sequencing mathematical tasks, and developing professional vision. The mathematics teaching researchers developed their professional competence in effectively carrying out teaching research activities, effectively mentoring teachers, and deepening the understanding of teaching.  相似文献

This report describes ways that five preservice teachers in the United States viewed and interacted with the rhetorical components (Valverde et al. in According to the book: using TIMSS to investigate the translation of policy into practice through the world of textbooks, Kluwer, 2002) of the innovative school mathematics curriculum materials used in a mathematics course for future elementary teachers. The preservice teachers’ comments reflected general agreement that the innovative curriculum materials contained fewer narrative elements and worked examples, as well as more (and different) exercises and question sets and activity elements, than the mathematics textbooks to which the teachers were accustomed. However, variation emerged when considering the ways in which the teachers interacted with the materials for their learning of mathematics. Whereas some teachers accepted and even embraced changes to the teaching–learning process that accompanied use of the curriculum materials, other teachers experienced discomfort and frustration at times. Nonetheless, each teacher considered that use of the curriculum materials improved her mathematical understandings in significant ways. Implications of these results for mathematics teacher education are discussed.  相似文献

This paper reports a joint research project by researchers from three countries on an international comparative study that examines the professional knowledge of prospective mathematics teachers in elementary mathematics from an advanced standpoint. For this study, mathematical problems on various topics of elementary mathematical content were developed. Using this instrument, the mathematical knowledge of future teachers from Germany, Hong Kong, China (Hangzhou) and South Korea was measured empirically. The paper presents the design of the study, and also results are discussed. The results show that there are systematic differences among the participating countries; for example, the Korean future teachers outperform their counterparts in other countries. A more detailed analysis of the results suggests that the future teachers often do not seem to be able to link school and university knowledge systematically and cannot achieve the crucial “advanced standpoint” from the teacher training programme.  相似文献

This article reports on the use of Rasch modelling to develop and validate an instrument measuring self-efficacy in tutoring children in primary mathematics (SETcPM). In response to the literature on teacher efficacy, the 20-item instrument aims to inform teacher educators, and is designed for novice pre-service teachers (nPSTs) preparing to teach mathematics in primary school (grades 1–7, ages 6–13). To ensure that the tasks of teaching are imaginable for nPSTs, the instrument targets the core activity of teaching mathematics: helping a generic child with mathematics tasks. We propose that SETcPM is measurable for the intended population and represents a central part of self-efficacy in teaching mathematics (SETM). Understanding the initial SETcPM of novices and mapping its development over the course of their training programme can contribute to a better understanding of SETM, and allow teacher educators to tailor their support.  相似文献

The article reports on the results of two case studies on the impact of the regular use of puzzles as a pedagogical strategy in the teaching and learning of engineering mathematics. The intention of using puzzles is to engage students’ emotions, creativity and curiosity and also to enhance their generic thinking skills and lateral thinking ‘outside the box’. Students’ attitudes towards this pedagogical strategy are evaluated via short questionnaires with two groups of university students taking a second-year engineering mathematics course. Students’ responses to the questionnaire are presented and analyzed in the paper.  相似文献

Mathematics education research has given increasing attention to the role of affective factors in the learning process. While 'affect' is used to refer to a variety of aspects including feelings, emotions, beliefs, attitudes and conceptions, this paper focuses on 'beliefs' of elementary pre-service teachers. In particular, the study evaluates the effect of participation in a reform-based elementary pre-service teacher education (referred to as Initial Teacher Education (ITE)) programme on participants' 'beliefs about the nature of mathematics'. This was completed using two (sub)scales of the Aiken's Revised Mathematics Scale measuring Enjoyment of Mathematics (E) and belief in the Value of Mathematics (V). Both scales were administered before and after participants completed the mathematics education programme, which consisted of 5 compulsory and consecutive modules. This study reveals that entry-level pre-service teachers report generally positive beliefs about the value of and enjoyment in doing mathematics. The findings challenge previous research, which report the tendency of teachers' beliefs to be resistant to change while in teacher education and suggest that it is possible for ITE mathematics education programmes to stimulate improvement in beliefs and attitudes among participants. Particular programme features are identified as instrumental in this positive change in beliefs about mathematics.  相似文献

Implementations of Big Data analysis are reshaping society. The novel ways mathematics operate in society warrants new efforts for mathematics education, both in teaching the new technology and in providing an ethical and critical awareness of its implications. This interview study investigates pre-service teachers' ethical reasoning in data science contexts, focusing on aspects of access to the data that underpin the technology. Findings show that pre-service teachers offer a wide array of ethical arguments related to access to data, that informs their effort to think critically on oppressive situations. However, there is also an indication that their reasoning can be limited by lacking understanding of the related data science methodology, implying that mathematics teacher education should encompass more of this.  相似文献

Over the past decade, the concept of self-regulated learning has broadened to include motivational, volitional, and emotional components next to (meta-)cognitive ones. In this article, we present a meta-emotion perspective as an essential component of a conceptual framework on self-regulation that fully acknowledges the role of emotions. Against this background, a study is presented that attempts to contribute to the clarification of the relevance and the functioning of students’ meta-emotional knowledge and emotional regulation skills in school-related mathematical activities. It investigates the coping strategies that 393 students of the second (age 14) and fourth (age 16) year of secondary school report to use to regulate their emotions in three different mathematical school settings (i.e., a mathematics test, a difficult mathematics homework, and a difficult mathematics lesson). More specifically, it aims (1) to document the nature and frequency of the reported coping strategies, and (2) to explore—for the three different mathematical school settings—relationships between these reported coping strategies and personal characteristics (i.e., students’ familiarity with the particular school settings, their track in secondary education, their achievement level, their age, and gender). The results indicate that students report to know and to make use of several coping strategies in school-related mathematical activities, and reveal that the use of these strategies is related to specific person-related characteristics. In conclusion, we elaborate on how schools and teachers can stimulate students to acquire appropriate strategies and skills to self-regulate their emotions.  相似文献

This study aims to capture similarities and differences in teachers’ questioning in German and Japanese mathematics classrooms, specifically focusing on the stage of introducing new mathematical content. The author analyzed consecutive mathematics classes taught by experienced teachers in Germany and Japan, who were recruited based on their locally defined “teaching competence” in the Learner’s Perspective Study. The results revealed that even questions that required students to recall previously learned content or provide the results of a calculation, which were regarded as lower cognitive questions in previous studies, played key roles at the stage of introducing new mathematical content in both German and Japanese classrooms. Further, distinctive patterns in the sequences of teachers’ questioning were identified. These differences suggest what is valued as quality mathematics teaching in each educational system.  相似文献
