It has been shown that lyotropic lamellar phases under shear flow form structures corresponding to a close packed assembly
of monodisperse multilamellar vesicles (onions). The size, which is fixed by the shear rate, can vary from a few microns to
a tenth of a micron. In this study, we investigate for the first time the transient behaviour of size changes of onions under
shear flow by means of small angle light scattering, direct microscopic observations, and conductivity measurements. We evidence
two regimes: continuous and discontinuous. The nature of which (continuous or discontinuous) depends on the initial and final
shear rate, and can be described by a dynamic phase diagram.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of cold collisions between metastable helium atoms in an optical trap at
1 mK. Penning (PI) and associative (AI) ionization reactions are distinguished using a mass spectrometer and studied under
influence of near resonant laser light. Dramatic enhancement, by more than a factor 15, of the ion rate is observed when the
laser is tuned close to resonance. Experimental findings are well-described, on an absolute scale, by model predictions.

A general expression for the cooperative diffusion constant of weakly charged gels is derived as a function of the thermodynamic
parameters such as polyelectrolyte concentration, salt concentration, ionic strength, and the degree of crosslinking. In the
low concentration range it decreases with the monomer concentration.

Abstact: The composition of forward-going projectile spectator matter in fixed-target Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A · GeV at the CERN
SPS has been studied as a function of centrality. The data were measured with the NA49 veto calorimeter. We observe that forward-going
spectator matter in central collisions consists of 9 neutrons, 7 protons, and half a deuteron on average. At large impact
parameters most spectator nucleons are bound in fragments. The relative resolution of the average impact parameter derived
from the measurement of spectator neutrons is roughly 19% in the range from zero to half maximum impact parameters.

Approximate expressions for the eigenvalue of a three-term recurrence relation with a general form describing various physical
problems are proposed. Their range of availability is examined by comparison with exact values for two different problems:
the bound and continuum states of monoelectronic diatomic ions and the Schr?dinger equation describing molecular alignment
in intense laser fields. For each case, very good predictions have been obtained, which may be useful as initial values in
iterative procedures for deriving exact solutions.

Catenoid-shaped smectic films are spanned between two coaxial circular frames separated by a distance H. It is shown that there exists a critical height H* such that below it two shapes of the catenoid are possible. The stability of these two shapes is analysed in terms of their
vibrations. The spectrum of eigenfrequencies is calculated as a function of the catenoid height. It is shown that the frequency
of the fundamental mode is real for the stable shape and imaginary for the other shape. Experimental study of vibrational
eigenmodes performed on stable SCE4 films confirms this theoretical prediction.

We present calculations of the fivefold differential cross-section (FDCS) for double photoionization of helium at excess energies
of 6 and 20 eV above threshold. Our results are obtained using for the final double-continuum state a product of three Coulomb
wave functions, with the Sommerfeld parameters modified to describe the strength of interaction of any two particles affected
by the third particle. Our calculations are compared with recent absolute measurements by D?rner et al. (Phys. Rev. A 57, 1074 (1998)), both in coplanar and non-coplanar geometries. Very good agreement is obtained for the shape of the angular
distributions, and differences in the absolute magnitude exist in comparison with the standard choice of Sommerfeld parameters.

The optical response of free and matrix-embedded gold metal clusters AuN is investigated in the framework of the time-dependent local-density-approximation (TDLDA). The characteristics of the surface
plasmon resonance are carefully analyzed as a function of the model parameters and the particle radius. The strong influence
of the frequency-dependence of the 5d core-electron dielectric function in the vicinity of the interband threshold is emphasized. The size evolution of the Mie-frequency
in free gold clusters exhibits a noticeable blue-shift trend as the particle size decreases, much stronger than in silver
clusters. The width and shape of the resonance, essentially ruled by the decay via the interband transitions, are found closely correlated to the imaginary component of the core-electron dielectric function.
In presence of a surrounding matrix the blue-shift trend is largely rubbed out. Agreement with recent experimental results
on size-selected gold clusters embedded in an alumina matrix may be achieved by taking into account the porosity effects at
the metal/matrix interface. The comparison with the predictions of classical models is also provided.

The -(BETS)2C(CN)3 radical cation salt was prepared by electrocrystallization, and its crystal structure was determined by single crystal X-ray
diffraction. The electronic structure of -(BETS)2C(CN)3 was studied by means of the extended Hückel tight binding method. The electrical conductivity of this salt as a function
of temperature shows a metallic behaviour down to 1.3 K. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations reveal both the classical and magnetic
breakdown orbits on the Fermi surface typical of the -type organic conductors. In addition, a low frequency oscillation (250 T) which is not predicted by the band structure calculations
has been found in the oscillation spectrum.

Phase properties of the field interacting with a two-level atom in a lossless cavity Jaynes-Cummings model, taking into account
the level shifts produced by Stark effect with an additional Kerr medium for one-mode are studied using the phase formalism
of Pegg and Barnett. It is shown in particular that phase properties of the field reflect the collapse and revival phenomena.
The results for the time evolution of the phase probability distribution and the phase fluctuations are obtained. The effect
of Stark shift on the phase properties in both the absence and presence of a Kerr medium is analyzed. Phase localization is
found for certain choice of the parameters.

Growth kinetics of thin oxide films on silicon in nitrous oxide were investigated in the very early stage of the process.
It was found that the resistance to oxidation reaches an almost stationary value for about 10 s at 1100 °C. The observation
is explained by the incorporation of nitrogen atoms at the interface in the film, which impede the further growth.

We describe the first saturation spectroscopy experiment concerning the A-X transition of ICl with considerably better resolution
than previous works. Form our data, improved constants for the hyperfine structure of the excited state are determined. The
A-X transition of ICl could be used to develop a set of secondary frequency standards and its metrologic qualities are discussed.

We use wavelets to decompose the volatility (standard deviation) of intraday (S&P500) return data across scales. We show that
when investigating two-point correlation functions of the volatility logarithms across different time scales, one reveals
the existence of a causal information cascade from large scales (i.e. small frequencies) to fine scales. We quantify and visualize the information flux across scales. We provide a possible interpretation
of our findings in terms of market dynamics.
