A novel approach has been explored to prepare brain‐like polyaniline (PANI) nanostructures with many convolutions (140–170 nm in average diameter) using aniline/citric acid (CA) salt as the template and chlorine gas as the oxidant by a gas/solid reaction for the first time. The method provided here differs significantly from the traditional one in which the polymerization of PANI is usually carried out in acidic solution.

Camphor sulfonic acid (CSA) doped polyaniline (PANI) nanotubes (175 nm in outer diameter and 120 nm in inner diameter) were synthesized successfully by a self‐assembly method. It is found that the room‐temperature conductivity of an individual PANI nanotube is 30.5 S · cm−1; in particular, the intrinsic resistance of an individual nanotube (30 kΩ) is much smaller than the contact resistance of crossed nanotubes (500 kΩ).

One‐dimensional methyl orange fibrils can be easily prepared. They are stable in acidic aqueous solutions and soluble in neutral water. When used to synthesize conducting polymer microtubules, the fibrils act as “hard templates” formally but as “soft templates” effectively. Microtubular structures of polypyrrole, polyaniline, and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) have been achieved successfully via such water‐soluble versatile templates.

The hemoprotein horseradish peroxidase (HRP) catalyzes the polymerization of N‐isopropylacrylamide with an alkyl bromide initiator under conditions of activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) in the absence of any peroxide. This is a novel activity of HRP, which we propose to name ATRPase activity. Bromine‐terminated polymers with polydispersity indices (PDIs) as low as 1.44 are obtained. The polymerization follows first order kinetics, but the evolution of molecular weight and the PDI upon increasing conversion deviate from the results expected for an ATRP mechanism. Conversion, and PDI depend on the pH and on the concentration of the reducing agent, sodium ascorbate. HRP is stable during the polymerization and does not unfold or form conjugates.

Poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) supramolecular structures are fabricated on P3HT‐dispersed reduced graphene oxide (RGO) monolayers and surfactant‐free RGO monolayers. P3HT is able to disperse RGO in hot anisole/N,N‐dimethylformamide solvents, and forms nanowires on RGO surfaces through a RGO induced crystallization process. The TEM and AFM investigation of the resultant P3HT/RGO composites shows that P3HT nanowires grow from RGO, and connect individual RGO monolayers. Raman spectroscopy confirms the interaction between P3HT and RGO, which allows the manipulation of the RGO electrical properties. Such a bottom‐up approach provides interesting graphene‐based composites for nanometer‐scale electronics.

The proteins of eggshell membranes, an industrial waste product, are dissolved by reductive cleavage with aqueous 3‐mercaptopropionic acid and acetic acid. The soluble protein preparation is cast into a thin film, and its bioactivity is investigated by cell culture.

Summary: Amphiphilic hyperbranched polyester (H20‐AM) with methacrylate end groups was synthesized based on hyperbranched aliphatic polyester (Boltorn™ H20). Narrow‐dispersed crosslinkable vesicles were obtained by dissolving H20‐AM in water, and characterized by laser light scattering and TEM. The hollow structural vesicle is composed of around 350 H20‐AM molecules, having a radius of around 40 nm and of 1.9 × 106 g · mL−1. The vesicles were fixed by crosslinking of methacrylate groups to form shape‐persistent structures.

Polyaniline nanostructures (nanosheets, nanofibers, and nanoparticles) can be assembled at the organic/aqueous interface or in solution by controlling the diffusion rate and the polymerization induction time of aniline. The quality of polyaniline nanostructures is determined by the polymerization solution conditions. Polyaniline nanosheets formation mechanism was proposed. Under certain polymerization conditions, polyaniline nanofibers or/and nanoparticles were obtained.

Summary: We propose a new approach for predicting polymer properties from structured molecular representations based on recursive neural networks. To this aim, a structured representation is designed for the modeling of polymer structures. This representation can also account for average macromolecule characteristics. Preliminarily, this model is applied to the calculation of the Tg of (meth)acrylic polymers with different stereoregularity.

This review deals with nanoporous materials made from the self‐assembly of block copolymers with a special interest in the chemical functions covering the surface of their nanopores. A detailed overview of the existing methods and strategies to generate well‐defined organic functional groups covering the surface of the pore walls is provided. This further enables to finely tune the affinity of the pore walls and to perform well‐defined chemical reactions onto them, which is essential for further dedicated applications.

Summary: Bisphenol A solid epoxy serves as an effective reaction compatibilizer to the bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC)/PMMA bilayer systems. Addition of epoxy to the bottom PMMA layer can retard or even prevent the dewetting of PC films by introducing crosslinking between both components at the interface. This is the first investigation of polymer bilayers stabilized by chemical reactions.

The synthesis of primary amine end‐functional poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)s has been achieved by using the Gabriel reaction. Polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate was first achieved by atom transfer radical polymerization using ethyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate or paramethoxyphenyl‐2‐bromoisobutyrate as initiator. Both resulting polymers, with a bromide‐end atom, were converted into phthalimido intermediates which then were successfully hydrolyzed using potassium hydroxide in tert‐butyl alcohol to result in poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)s terminated by a primary amine function. End group interconversions were followed by 1H NMR, FT‐IR, and MALDI‐TOF MS measurements. All the results proved that quantitative transformations were achieved at each step. Moreover, the method developed is very easy to carry out.

Summary: Nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of styrene in a continuous tubular reactor has been demonstrated for the first time. The polymerization kinetics in the tubular reactor are similar to those in a batch reactor. The number average molecular weight increases linearly with conversion, and chain extension experiments were successful, indicating that the living nature of the polymerization is maintained in the tubular reactor.

A facile approach to polymer nanocomposites with single‐wall carbon nanotubes and cationic polymers is reported. The composite material was synthesized by producing carboxylic acid groups at the nanotube termini followed by a reaction with poly(allylamine) in water. Fourier transform infrared spectral and thermogravimetric analyses corroborate that the poly(allylamine) chains were wrapped on the surface of the carbon nanotubes. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image shows that the nanotubes were dispersed with little aggregation, thus, strongly suggesting that the poly(allylamine) chains have covered the single‐wall carbon nanotubes, which was further evidenced by transmission electron microscopy. The composites are soluble in water, and this solubilization process opens up new opportunities in the solution chemistry on pristine nanotubes.

SS phages are genetically enginnered by replacing 2 N‐terminal amino acids of the p8 coat protein of the fd phage. AGE and zeta potential measurements show that SS phages carry at least 1/4 less net negative surface charge than fd phages. Morphology and thickness of phages are studied at different counterion concentrations (10?3, 10?2 and 10?1 M ) by AFM, SEM and immunofluorescence analyses. Bundles induced by CoCl2 and CaCl2 are either metallized by chemical reduction or biomineralized for apatite‐like material formation. EDX spectroscopy confirms the presence of Co, P and Ca peaks in mineralized samples. Such bottom‐up manufactured phage scaffolds might be applied in bioengineering studies.

Summary: We report a new method for the preparation of polyaniline nanoballs by using HAuCl4 as an oxidizing agent. During the reaction, aniline is oxidized and forms polyaniline whilst the hydrogen tetrachloroaurate is reduced and forms gold nanoparticles. These gold nanoparticles are found to decorate the nanoballs.
