Summary: We describe an interesting approach to the fabrication of wettability gradients from hydrophobicity to superhydrophobicity in low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) films by first forming high porosity surfaces and placing the specimens onto linear temperature gradients. While the polymer chosen for the study is non‐polar, its microporous layer provides sufficient superhydrophobicity. Lateral gradient heating of the layer results in partial melting of the polymer and correspondingly decreases porosity thus decreasing hydrophobicity.

The synthesis of water soluble star‐block copolypeptides and their encapsulation properties are described. The star‐block copolypeptides, obtained by ring‐opening polymerization of amino acid N‐carboxyanhydrides, consist of a PEI core, a hydrophobic polyphenylalanine or polyleucine inner shell, and a negatively charged polyglutamate outer shell. The encapsulation study showed that these water soluble, amphiphilic star‐block copolypeptides could simultaneously encapsulate versatile compounds ranging from hydrophobic to anionic and cationic hydrophilic guest molecules.

The mixed Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of homo‐polystyrene (h‐PS) and the diblock copolymer polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (PS‐b‐P2VP) have been characterized by the Langmuir monolayer technique and tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. When the content of h‐PS is below 80 wt.‐%, the mixed LB films of h‐PS/PS‐b‐P2VP mainly exhibit isolated circular nanoaggregates. With a further increase of the h‐PS content (80–95%), however, highly uniform and stable necklace‐network structures are observed in the mixed LB films.

Summary: A soft‐lithographic imprinting approach to fabricate super‐hydrophobic surfaces has been developed in this work. In this process, fresh lotus leaves were used as masters and PDMS stamps were prepared by replica molding against the lotus‐leaf surfaces. By using the stamps and an epoxy‐based azo polymer solution as “ink”, the mimicked lotus‐leaf surfaces made of the polymer were fabricated by pressing the featured faces of the stamps against “inked” substrates and drying under a proper condition after peeling off the stamps. The lotus‐leaf‐like surfaces show super‐hydrophobic characteristics with the water contact angle higher than 150° and contact angle hysteresis less than 3°.

A unique example of macromolecular self‐assembly, where a mono‐component homopolyimide bearing carboxy end‐groups spontaneously forms nanopartilces with novel dimple‐like morphology in a single good solvent, is presented. The self‐assembly process is dramatically affected by the solution concentration and the temperature. It is proposed that such an unexpected self‐assembly behavior is a synergistic result of the self‐complementary hydrogen bonding between carboxy end‐groups and the propensity to parallel packing of polyimide chains through aromatic interactions.

It is the general consensus that in Gilch polymerizations the 1,4‐bis(chloromethylene)benzene starting material first changes into p‐quinodimethane intermediates which then act as the real monomers. However, direct observation of these intermediates has not been possible so far. This is because usually the p‐quinodimethane auto‐initiates its rapid radical polymerization instantaneously, keeping its concentration extremely low throughout the whole process. Here it is shown that, when the reaction is carried out at very low temperatures, the formation of p‐quinodimethane still proceeds but chain growth is suppressed. Hence, the concentration of the active monomer reaches a level sufficient for NMR analysis.

Amphiphilic polymer brushes grafted onto gold nanoparticles impart distinct solvent‐responsive behavior via the change to particle size and surface chemistry and, therefore, wide application prospects can be expected. Coarse‐grained simulations are performed for block and/or mixed polystyrene (PS)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)‐modified amphiphilic gold nanoparticles (AuNP) to investigate their responsive behavior in five different solvents by analyzing their morphology, distribution density profiles, and gyration radii. Typical core–shell, Janus‐type, buckle‐like, ring‐like, jellyfish‐like, and octopus‐like morphologies are formed. Influence of block sequence, mixing mode, and several other effects are discussed. Responsive particle size and surface hydrophilicity can be successfully reproduced by altering solvents.

This communication details the successful synthesis of low polydispersity core cross‐linked star (CCS) polymers via DPE‐mediated polymerisation. We demonstrate the ability to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(acrylonitrile) CCS polymers that are currently inaccessible via the two most common non‐metal‐based controlled radical polymerisation techniques (NMP and RAFT polymerisations).

A Y‐shaped amphiphilic fluorinated monomer, 1‐(1H,1H,2H,2H‐perfluorodecyloxy)‐3‐(3,6,9‐trioxadecyloxy)‐propan‐2‐yl acrylate has been synthesized and its polymerization by reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) homopolymerization has been investigated. The results show that the molecular weights of the polymers are controlled and all the molecular weight distributions are lower than 1.4. Well‐defined copolymers with 2‐(N,N‐dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate have been prepared by RAFT polymerization, and the surface properties of the block and random copolymers have been examined by contact angle measurement for water and hexadecane. It has been found that the surfaces of the block copolymers simultaneously exhibit excellent anti‐fog and oil‐repellent properties.

We report here a facile synthesis of high performance electro‐active polymer actuator based on a sulfonated polyimide with well‐defined silver electrodes via self‐metallization. The proposed method greatly reduces fabrication time and cost, and obviates a cation exchange process required in the fabrication of ionic polymer‐metal composite actuators. Also, the self‐metallized silver electrodes exhibit outstanding metal‐polymer adhesion with high conductivity, resulting in substantially larger tip displacements compared with Nafion‐based actuators.

Summary: From kinetic theory we have rigorously derived singularity‐free Brownian dynamics analyses of nanoparticle rotational dynamics. The rigid non‐spherical nanoparticles incorporate all three rotational degrees of freedom. This was achieved by using the components of Cartesian rotation vectors as the generalized coordinates describing angular orientation. The new results constitute an important advance compared to the situation when Eulerian angles specify angular orientation. Our finding eliminates one of the main longstanding obstacles to detailed studies of nanoparticle rotational dynamics in the diffusion time domain. The described formalism is applicable to a wide range of nanoparticle systems including liquid crystals, biopolymers, and colloids.

One‐dimensional methyl orange fibrils can be easily prepared. They are stable in acidic aqueous solutions and soluble in neutral water. When used to synthesize conducting polymer microtubules, the fibrils act as “hard templates” formally but as “soft templates” effectively. Microtubular structures of polypyrrole, polyaniline, and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) have been achieved successfully via such water‐soluble versatile templates.

A novel kind of supramolecular liquid‐crystalline polymer (SLCP) microparticles was successfully fabricated with an azopyridyl polymer and sebacic acid by combining a simple self‐organized precipitation method with hydrogen bonding interactions. Upon slow evaporation of a mixed solution of a volatile good solvent and a nonvolatile poor one, walnutlike microparticles showing wrinkled surfaces and LC natures were obtained. The diacid might play a crucial role in the formation of SLCP particles. Without addition of the diacid, neither wrinkled surfaces nor LC natures were observed in azopyridyl polymer microparticles. The fabricated SLCP microparticle possessed not only photoresponsive properties (due to azopyridyl groups) but also LC ordering, which might enable them to find advanced applications.

Summary: Self‐oscillating polymers and nano‐gel particles consisting of N‐isopropylacrylamide and the ruthenium catalyst of the Belousov‐Zhabotinsky reaction have been prepared. In order to clarify the crosslinking effect on the self‐oscillating behavior, the phase transition behaviors were investigated by measuring the transmittance and the fluorescence intensity of the polymer solution and the gel bead suspension. Cooperative effects due to crosslinking will play an important role for the design of nanoactuators.

Summary: Novel hyperbranched poly(amine‐ester) (HPAE) cross‐linked films were prepared by cross‐linking the terminal hydroxyl groups of HPAE using glutaraldehyde (GA). Atom force microscope and scanning electron microscope revealed their smooth surfaces, dense and homogenous matrices. Property characterizations indicated that these cross‐linked films had good hydrophilicity, relative low protein adsorption, and high tensile strength. Also, their swelling behavior varied with the solvent.

An amylose‐grafted chitosan has been synthesized by a chemoenzymatic method according to the following two reactions. First, maltoheptaose is introduced to chitosan by a reductive amination using sodium cyanotrihydroborate in a mixed solvent of 1.0 mol · L−1 aqueous acetic acid and methanol at room temperature to produce a maltoheptaose‐grafted chitosan that has a well‐defined molecular structure. A phosphorylase‐catalyzed enzymatic polymerization of α‐D ‐glucose 1‐phosphate is then performed from the maltoheptaose‐grafted chitosan to obtain the amylose‐grafted chitosan. This material does not dissolve in any solvent, e.g., aqueous acetic acid and dimethyl sufoxide, which are good solvents for chitosan and amylose, respectively.

Ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) was used for the synthesis of monolithic capillary columns with inner diameters of 200 µm. The resulting polymeric monoliths were characterized by inverse size‐exclusion chromatography (ISEC). Surface functionalization was carried out in situ using 2‐(N,N‐dimethylaminoethyl)norborn‐5‐ene‐2‐ylcarboxylic amide ( 1 ). The resulting functionalized monoliths were successfully used in anion‐exchange chromatography of oligodeoxynucleotides.

A simple and direct method for derivatization of solid polysaccharides is presented. The novel methodology is based on the combination of organic acid‐catalyzed esterification or etherification and photochemical thiol‐ene click derivatization of a heterogeneous polysaccharide. The solid cellulose was “organoclick” modified with aryl, alkyl and polyester groups, respectively. The modification allows for a highly modular and metal free surface modification of solid polysaccharides.

A novel poly‐L ‐arginine group microcapsule was produced to investigate its nutritional function and pharmacological efficacy. The molecular weight of poly‐L ‐arginine is an important parameter for its membrane strength, but does not obviously affect its release property. Thus, poly‐L ‐arginine can be used as a kind of new membrane material in microcapsules, and it is expected to be used as an therapeutic and biodegradable drug carrier.
