A series of novel biodegradable random copolymers of 5‐benzyloxy‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (5‐benzyloxy‐trimethylene carbonate, BTMC) and glycolide were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The incorporation of BTMC units into the copolymer chains results in good solubility of the polymers in common solvents. The in vitro degradation rate can be tailored by adjusting the composition of the copolymers.

Many research groups have explored the properties and solution self‐assembly of main chain metallo‐supramolecular multiblock copolymers. Until recently, these metal complexes have been used to prepare mainly micelle type structures. However, the self‐assembly of such copolymers has been exploited further to create more advanced architectures which utilize the reversible supramolecular linkage of their building blocks as a key component in their synthesis. Furthermore, the incorporation of multiple orthogonal interactions and stimuli responsive polymers into their design, enables more precise external control of their properties. This feature article discusses recent developments and provides an insight into their potential exploitation and development for the creation of novel, smart, and responsive nanostructures.

A cationic water‐soluble polyfluorene (P2) containing a high density of tetraalkylammonium side chains in polymer backbone was synthesized and characterized. The polymer shows excellent water solubility up to 100 mg · mL−1 as well as high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield of 44% in water. The relatively high cationic density and appropriate side chain length of the polymer are the key factors to achieve such high water solubility. The reduction potential of P2 is decreased as compared with its neutral polymer, reflecting the enhanced electron injection abilities. The standard NPB/Alq3 device using such a polymer as the electron injection layer shows nearly three‐fold enhancement in the electroluminescence (EL) efficiency.

A new versatile synthesis strategy for macromonomers has been developed that uses the living ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) with commercial Grubbs first generation ruthenium initiators. Homopolymers as well as diblock copolymers were end‐functionalized with norbornene derivatives to serve as macromonomers. The graft copolymerization of the macromonomers was also carried out employing ROMP. Well‐defined and highly functional graft copolymers are accessible by this new synthetic route.

Well‐defined telechelic‐type aromatic polyamides having a secondary amino group and a phenyl ester moiety at each chain end were prepared by the chain‐growth polycondensation of phenyl 4‐(octylamino)benzoate ( 1 ) with initiator 2 (Ntert‐butoxycarbonylated 1 ), followed by deprotection of the N‐protecting group of the initiator unit. This polycondensation was applied to the synthesis of well‐defined di‐ and triblock copolymers of aromatic polyamides and poly(tetrahydrofuran) (poly(THF)) by the reaction of the terminal secondary amino group of the polyamide with the living cationic propagating group of poly(THF).

Summary: The vapor‐based synthesis and characterization of a reactive polymer, poly[(4‐formyl‐p‐xylylene)‐co‐(p‐xylylene)] ( 1 ), have been reported. The reactive polymer coating enables the immobilization of oligosaccharides via the chemoselective aldehyde‐hydrazide coupling reaction.

Summary: Amphiphilic graft polyphosphazenes (EtTrp/PNIPAm‐PPP) with different mole ratios of hydrophobic groups to hydrophilic segments were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization and subsequent substitution reactions. The self‐assembly behavior of these graft copolymers was studied in detail by TEM, SEM, CLSM, and AFM. Depending on the copolymer composition and common organic solvent employed in dialysis process, supramolecular aggregates ranging from network, nanospheres, high‐genus particles to macrophage‐like aggregates were produced with graft copolymers.

Polycondensation of 1‐(2‐pyrimidinyl)pyrrole with 2,7‐dibromo‐9,9‐dioctylfluorene via Ru‐catalyzed direct arylation gives the corresponding conjugated polymer with a molecular weight of 19 800 in 86% yield. The introduction of directing group, 2‐pyrimidinyl substituent, into the pyrrole monomer induces ortho‐metalation and provides the site‐selective direct arylation polycondensation at the α‐position of pyrrole unit without the protection of β‐position. The removal of 2‐pyrimidinyl substituent on the pyrrole unit proceeds efficiently and results in the enhancement of coplanarity along the main chain of the polymer.

Alternating copolymers comprised of (meth)acrylates and vinyl ethers with controlled molecular weights and polydispersities were synthesized for the first time by living radical polymerization using organotellurium, stibine, and bismuthine chain transfer agents. Combining living alternating copolymerization and living radical or living cationic polymerization afforded hitherto unavailable block copolymers with controlled macromolecular structures.

Organic π‐conjugated polymers have emerged as one of the most fascinating classes of materials as they have found utility in a host of plastic electronics technologies. The distance between π‐systems and their relative orientation dictate energy/charge transfer, conductivity, and photophysical properties of these materials in bulk. This Feature Article discusses π‐conjugated polymers and model compounds in which specific inter‐π‐system interactions are covalently enforced and the effect that the scaffolding has on optoelectronic properties.

Supramolecular self‐assembly of block copolymers in aqueous solution has received ever‐increasing interest over the past few decades due to diverse biological and technological applications in drug delivery, imaging, sensing and catalysis. In addition to relative block lengths, molecular weights and solution conditions, chain architectures of block copolymers can also dramatically affect their self‐assembling properties in selective solvents. This feature article mainly focuses on recent developments in the field of supramolecular self‐assembly of amphiphilic and double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) possessing nonlinear chain topologies, including miktoarm star polymers, dendritic–linear block copolymers, cyclic block copolymers and comb‐shaped copolymer brushes.

Summary: The relatively high degree of crystallinity of a new thermoplastic polyimide (PI) makes it a favorable matrix candidate for fiber reinforced composites. This advantage is the result of the ability of the matrix to recrystallize during the composite manufacturing process. In this study we examine the potential nucleating effect of carbon nanotubes on a thermoplastic PI. In addition to their inherent mechanical contribution, the carbon nanotubes help recover a significant proportion of the original crystallinity.

Summary: The synthesis and thermal, redox and photoluminescence properties of a soluble donor‐acceptor polyplatinayne with the electron‐accepting silole ring and its model compound are described. The polymer has an optical band gap of 2.10 eV which is much lower than that of thienyl‐ or silyl‐bridged congeners. The incorporation of electron‐accepting silole unit in the metallopolymer main chain creates a new π‐conjugated system that features unique donor‐acceptor characteristics.
