Summary: A novel chemically amplified negative‐tone molecular resist for electron‐beam (EB) lithography was developed. The base matrix had six furan rings as a reactive functional group at its terminal. The resist containing the matrix, a crosslinker and a photoacid generator worked well as a negative‐tone resist with high sensitivity (3 µC · cm−2). Line and space patterns (1:2) of 200 nm could be fabricated.

A novel silicon‐containing molecular resist material based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, possessing trimethoxysilyl groups, was designed in order to reduce post‐exposure delay problems and to improve resolution. Since the acid‐catalyzed cross‐linking reaction of trimethoxysilyl groups occurs at room temperature, there is no necessity of post‐exposure bake. The molecular resist showed 0.7 µm line‐and‐space patterns using a mercury–xenon lamp in a contact printing mode and 100 nm line‐and‐space patterns using electron beam lithography.

A long alkylsilyl group was attached to a thiophene ring system to overcome the instability of 2,5‐bis(halomethyl)thiophene monomers, by imparting steric hindrance and electronic delocalization. The resulting stable monomer could be used directly to prepare low‐band‐gap poly(thienylenevinylene) (1.57 eV) through heteroaromatic dehydrohalogenation polymerization.

A new approach toward the grafting of norborn‐2‐ene derivatives onto ROMP‐based monolithic supports has been developed. Grafting yields were governed by three variables, which are the catalyst, temperature and the crosslinker used. Three different catalysts, three grafting temperatures, as well as two different crosslinkers were investigated. By optimizing all variables 4‐fold amounts of grafted monomers compared to previously reported procedures were obtained reaching values of 1.04 mmol of monomer/g monolith.

Polymer hydrogels with characteristics distinct from those of solid materials are one of the most promising candidates for smart materials. Here, we report that a nanocomposite hydrogel (NC gel) consisting of a unique polymer/clay network structure, can exhibit complete self‐healing through autonomic reconstruction of crosslinks across a damaged interface. Mechanical damage in NC gels can be repaired without the use of a healing agent, and even sections of NC gels separated by cutting, from whichever the same or different kinds of NC gel, perfectly (re‐)combine by just contacting the cut surfaces together at mildly elevated temperatures. In NC gels, the autonomic fusion of cut surfaces as well as the self‐healing could be achieved not only immediately after being cut but also after a long waiting time.

Chiral polyethyne derivatives with lyotropic liquid‐crystalline properties are found to be able to self‐assemble, forming two chiral organizations with opposite handedness in solid thin films by selection of the casting solvent and its concentration. After the film preparation, chiral organization could also be induced by simple exposure to an appropriate organic solvent's vapor for several minutes without thermal treatment. Furthermore, irreversible inversion of the handedness of the chiral organization in the film could be achieved by exposure to solvent vapor.

Chitosan grafted oligo(L ‐lactic acid) copolymers with different length of side chain were prepared through the reaction of terminal aldehyde group of oligo(L ‐lactic acid) (OLLA) and amino groups of chitosan. The mean molecular mass of the grafting OLLA chain was ca. 600 ~ 5 000. The graft copolymers are soluble in DMSO, DMF and acetic acid. The synthesis method and structure described here provide chitosan‐g‐OLLA copolymers with broad applicability.

Poly(2,5‐thienylene vinylene) (PTV), an insoluble conjugated polymer, can be readily prepared in various shapes of different nanodimensions by the chemical vapor deposition polymerization of 2,5‐bis(chloromethyl)thiophene. The bischloromethyl monomer in the vapor phase is activated at 600 °C. The activated monomer vapor is deposited at room temperature on the surface of various substrates to prepare polymeric films, fibers, tubes etc., which are then thermally converted into PTV. PTV thin films can be carbonized thermally to produce graphitic compositions that contain sulfur atoms. Electrical conductivities of FeCl‐doped PTV and carbonized films are reported.

This communication details the successful synthesis of low polydispersity core cross‐linked star (CCS) polymers via DPE‐mediated polymerisation. We demonstrate the ability to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(acrylonitrile) CCS polymers that are currently inaccessible via the two most common non‐metal‐based controlled radical polymerisation techniques (NMP and RAFT polymerisations).

A novel tert‐butyl‐containing dianhydride was prepared from readily available reagents. It was reacted with various aromatic diamines to prepare a set of polyimides containing tert‐butyl pendent groups. The resulting polyimides exhibit high molecular weights (high inherent viscosity), and a combination of desirable properties, such as good solubility in aprotic amide solvents and cresols, high glass transition temperatures (up to 320 °C), high thermal resistance, film‐forming capability and good mechanical properties.

Bis(2,2′:6′,2″‐terpyrid‐4′‐yl) diethylene glycol was synthesized as a monomer unit and further utilized for polymerization with FeCl2 in order to form water‐soluble coordination polymers. Viscosity measurements and film‐forming properties indicate the formation of linear coordination polymers or larger ring structures. The terpyridine/iron(II) complexes are stable up to temperatures of 210 °C, but can be uncomplexed by the addition of an excess of a strong competitive ligand (HEDTA) under mild conditions.

New multifunctional copoly(2‐oxazoline) nanoparticles were prepared for cell studies. The polymer contains double‐bond side chains as potential reaction sites for “thio”‐click reactions as well as a fluorescein label covalently bound to the polymer backbone. Using the nanoprecipitation technique, spherical nanoparticles of 200–800 nm were obtained. Confocal laser scanning microscopy measurements revealed the cellular uptake of the nanoparticles.

Summary: Nitroxide‐mediated polymerization of styrene in a continuous tubular reactor has been demonstrated for the first time. The polymerization kinetics in the tubular reactor are similar to those in a batch reactor. The number average molecular weight increases linearly with conversion, and chain extension experiments were successful, indicating that the living nature of the polymerization is maintained in the tubular reactor.

Hyperbranched polythiophenes were prepared via a simple one‐pot synthesis approach based on oxidative coupling of branched conjugated monomers. Only small variations in the building unit and architecture lead to large differences of absorption and photoluminescence properties. Interestingly, soluble hyperbranched polythiophenes with relatively small molecular weights show enhanced absorption at low and high wavelengths compared to linear analogues, such as poly(3‐hexyl thiophenes) with high molecular weights. With this versatile approach we present a method to design tailor made, functional materials with potential applications in optoelectronics.
