Five theorems on polygons and polytopes inscribed in (or circumscribed about) a convex compact set in the plane or space are proved by topological methods. In particular, it is proved that for every interior point O of a convex compact set in ℝ3, there exists a two-dimensional section through O circumscribed about an affine image of a regular octagon. It is also proved that every compact convex set in ℝ3 (except the cases listed below) is circumscribed about an affine image of a cube-octahedron (the convex hull of the midpoints of the edges of a cube). Possible exceptions are provided by the bodies containing a parallelogram P and contained in a cylinder with directrix P. Bibliography: 29 titles. The importance of beliefs for the teaching and learning of mathematics is widely recognized among mathematics educators. In this special issue, we explicitly address what we call “beliefs and beyond” to indicate the larger field surrounding beliefs in mathematics education. This is done to broaden the discussion to related concepts (which may not originate in mathematics education) and to consider the interconnectedness of concepts. In particular, we present some new developments at the conceptual level, address different approaches to investigate beliefs, highlight the role of student beliefs in problem-solving activities, and discuss teacher beliefs and their significance for professional development. One specific intention is to consider expertise from colleagues in the fields of educational research and psychology, side by side with perspectives provided by researchers from mathematics education.  相似文献

In this paper, we deal with a real problem on production and transportation in a housing material manufacturer, and consider a production and transportation planning under the assumption that the manufacturer makes multiple products at factories in multiple regions and the products are in demand in each of the regions. First, we formulate mixed zero–one programming problems such that the cost of production and transportation is minimized subject to capacities of factories and demands of regions. Second, to realize stable production and satisfactory supply of the products in fuzzy environments, fuzzy programming for the production and transportation problem is incorporated. Finally, under the optimal planning of production and transportation, we show a profit and cost allocation by applying a solution concept from game theory. Using actual data, we show usefulness of the fuzzy programming and a rational allocation scheme of the profit and cost.  相似文献

A nonlinear dynamical model of urban and regional economic growth in labor and capital stock is presented which draws from the literature of mathematical ecology. By stating the problem of urban and regional development in a Volterra-Lotka type system of differential equations, points of bifurcating behavior in urban and regional structure are obtained. It is suggested that the recent abrupt phenomena of change in regional and urban population accumulations in the U.S. could be captured by such model formulation.  相似文献

One important factor in the failure to learn arithmetic in the normal way is an endogenous core deficit in the sense of number. This has been associated with low numeracy in general (e.g. Halberda et al. in Nature 455:665–668, 2008) and with dyscalculia more specifically (e.g. Landerl et al. in Cognition 93:99–125, 2004). Here, we describe straightforward ways of identifying this deficit, and offer some new ways of strengthening the sense of number using learning technologies.  相似文献

We assume that each manufacturer decides his price to the tradeand that retailers set their prices in the light of the manufacturer'sprices. We consider two hypotheses about the way in which eachmakes his decision. In the absence of cooperation, the retailerchooses a price (as a function of the trade price) which willmaximize the retail profit. The manufacturer takes this intoaccount in determining his price to maximize his profit. Ifthey cooperate (which may be illegal), they agree to a retailprice which maximizes their joint profit. The trade price isset via a discussion on how the profit is to be split betweenthem. It is clear that the cooperative profit cannot be lessthan the non-cooperative profit. In at least one set of circumstancesthe non-cooperative solution yields a smaller profit for theretailer than the manufacturer, which means that the latteris in a weak position with respect to bargaining over the additionalprofits from cooperation. More surprising is our main resultthat, for some response functions, cooperative prices are lowerand sales volumes are higher under cooperation. Examples tobe examined in detail are: (a) single manufacturer and singleretailer; (b) several manufacturers and a single retailer (ora group of identical retailers) with a linear symmetric price-volumerelationship.  相似文献

Summary Rapidly expanding uses of DEA have been accompanied by developments which have enhanced its power and enlarged its utility for additional applications. Developments covered in the present paper include simulation studies comparing DEA with competing forms of statistical regressions. Other studies covered show how these two approaches can be combined in complementary fashion. Another part of this paper deals with Chance Constrained Programming formulations which incorporate probabilistic elements into DEA. Included also are discussions of statistical characterizations with accompanying tests of statistical significance for DEA efficiency evaluations. This paper concludes with uses of DEA in “discovery processes”-processes that need strengthening (and encouragemnt) in contemporary social science and management science research. Suggestions are made for additional research on further developments which extend to uses of DEA to provide new approaches in economics (including econometrics), management and psychology and an Appendix introduces new or recently developed efficiency measures for use in DEA. Any statistical analysis or decision analysis contains numerical inputs of which we are unsure. Some of our uncertainty arises from physical randomness which we can model in various ways, ideally through probability. Some uncertainty relates to judgemental estimates of quantities about which we may be unsure in many different respects. There are other uncertainties involved, however: some relate to ambiguity and imprecision of meaning; some relate to lack of clarity in the objectives which the analysis seeks to meet; some relate to the numerical accuracy of calculations. How should the uncertainty arising from ambiguity be modelled? Other uncertainties can also impact on an analysis. Why is the analysis being conducted? Are the objectives clear?  相似文献

Comonotonicity and coconvexity are well-understood in uniform polynomial approximation and in piecewise interpolation. The covariance of a global (Hermite) rational interpolant under certain transformations, such as taking the reciprocal, is well-known, but its comonotonicity and its coconvexity are much less studied. In this paper we show how the barycentric weights in global rational (interval) interpolation can be chosen so as to guarantee the absence of unwanted poles and at the same time deliver comonotone and/or coconvex interpolants. In addition the rational (interval) interpolant is well-suited to reflect asymptotic behaviour or the like.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is the study of different approaches to combine and scale, in an efficient manner, descent information for the solution of unconstrained optimization problems. We consider the situation in which different directions are available in a given iteration, and we wish to analyze how to combine these directions in order to provide a method more efficient and robust than the standard Newton approach. In particular, we will focus on the scaling process that should be carried out before combining the directions. We derive some theoretical results regarding the conditions necessary to ensure the convergence of combination procedures following schemes similar to our proposals. Finally, we conduct some computational experiments to compare these proposals with a modified Newton??s method and other procedures in the literature for the combination of information.  相似文献

The k-Fibonacci polynomials are the natural extension of the k-Fibonacci numbers and many of their properties admit a straightforward proof. Here in particular, we present the derivatives of these polynomials in the form of convolution of k-Fibonacci polynomials. This fact allows us to present in an easy form a family of integer sequences in a new and direct way. Many relations for the derivatives of Fibonacci polynomials are proven.  相似文献

Linear programming (LP) duality is examined in the context of other dualities in mathematics. The mathematical and economic properties of LP duality are discussed and its uses are considered. These mathematical and economic properties are then examined in relation to possible integer programming (IP) dualities. A number of possible IP duals are considered in this light and shown to capture some but not all desirable properties. It is shown that inherent in IP models are inequality and congruence constraints, both of which give on their own well-defined duals. However, taken together, no totally satisfactory dual emerges. The superadditive dual based on the Gomory and Chvátal functions is then described, and its properties are contrasted with LP duals and other IP duals. Considering the important role played by mathematical derivatives in the study of physical–chemical processes, this paper discusses the different possibilities and formulations of this concept and its application. In particular, in Chemical Thermodynamics, we study exact differentials associated with the so-called state functions and inexact differentials associated with path functions. We discuss firstly the problem of military decision, in the context of the more general development of ideas in the representation of decision making. Within this context, we have considered a mathematical model—Bayesian Decision—of decision making and military command. Previous work has been extended, and applied to this problem. A distribution of belief in outcome, given that a decision is made, and a Loss function—a measure of the effect of this outcome relative to a goal—are formed. The Bayes' Decision is the decision which globally minimises the resultant bimodal (or worse) Expected Loss function. The set of all minimising decisions corresponds to the surface of an elementary Catastrophe. This allows smooth parameter changes to lead to a discontinuous change in the Bayes' decision. In future work this approach will be used to help develop a number of hypotheses concerning command processes and military headquarters structure. It will also be used to help capture such command and control processes in simulation modelling of future defence capability and force structure.  相似文献

A prized property of theories of all kinds is that of generality, of applicability or least relevance to a wide range of circumstances and situations. The purpose of this article is to present a pair of distinctions that suggest that three kinds of generality are to be found in mathematics and logics, not only at some particular period but especially in developments that take place over time: ‘omnipresent’ and ‘multipresent’ theories, and ‘ubiquitous’ notions that form dependent parts, or moments, of theories. The category of ‘facets’ is also introduced, primarily to assess the roles of diagrams and notations in these two disciplines. Various consequences are explored, starting with means of developing applied mathematics, and then reconsidering several established ways of elaborating or appraising theories, such as analogising, revolutions, abstraction, unification, reduction and axiomatisation. The influence of theories already in place upon theory-building is emphasised. The roles in both mathematics and logics of set theory, abstract algebras, metamathematics, and model theory are assessed, along with the different relationships between the two disciplines adopted in algebraic logic and in mathematical logic. Finally, the issue of monism versus pluralism in these two disciplines is rehearsed, and some suggestions are made about the special character of mathematical and logical knowledge, and also the differences between them. Since the article is basically an exercise in historiography, historical examples and case studies are described or noted throughout.  相似文献

In this Blackett Lecture, Professor Littlechild, Director General of Electricity Supply in the UK's Office of Electricity Regulation, renews acquaintance with some models he has developed over the years, introduces some models he has recently met, and discusses models that it would seem to be worthwhile developing.
