By means of density functional theory calculations, we investigate work functions, energy level alignments, charge transfers, and tunneling characteristics of CH3- and CF3-terminated alkane- and diphenylthiol monolayers on Au(111). While the alignments of the energy levels and the charge transfers at the metal-molecule interface are found to be determined by the value of the clean Au surface work function relative to the HOMO ionization potential (IP) at the thiolate end of the monolayer, the change of work function for the modified Au(111) surface is dominated by the properties of the thiolate monolayer, including the character, saturated or conjugated, of the molecule and the chemical nature and orientation of the terminal group. The tunneling currents through the adsorbed molecular monolayers are calculated using the Tersoff-Hamann approach. The computed difference between the I-V characteristics for the CH3- and CF3-terminated alkanethiol monolayers agree well with available experimental data. The energy barrier at the metal-molecule interface, the molecular electronic structure, and the IP of the terminal group are the key parameters which determine the tunneling properties.  相似文献

The interaction of vapor-deposited Al atoms with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of HS-(CH(2))(16)-X (X = -OH and -OCH(3)) chemisorbed at polycrystalline Au[111] surfaces was studied using time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Whereas quantum chemical theory calculations show that Al insertion into the C-C, C-H, C-O, and O-H bonds is favorable energetically, it is observed that deposited Al inserts only with the OH SAM to form an -O-Al-H product. This reaction appears to cease prior to complete -OH consumption, and is followed by formation of a few overlayers of a nonmetallic type of phase and finally deposition of a metallic film. In contrast, for the OCH(3) SAM, the deposited Al atoms partition along two parallel paths: nucleation and growth of an overlayer metal film, and penetration through the OCH(3) SAM to the monolayer/Au interface region. By considering a previous observation that a CH(3) terminal group favors penetration as the dominant initial process, and using theory calculations of Al-molecule interaction energies, we suggest that the competition between the penetration and overlayer film nucleation channels is regulated by small differences in the Al-SAM terminal group interaction energies. These results demonstrate the highly subtle effects of surface structure and composition on the nucleation and growth of metal films on organic surfaces and point to a new perspective on organometallic and metal-solvent interactions.  相似文献

Dissociation of ethanethiol and the formation of Au-adatom-diethylthiolate rows on the Au(111) surface were investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at low temperature. Ethanethiol molecules physisorb on Au(111) at 120 K by sequentially occupation of the elbow site, the fcc domain before covering the whole surface with a semiliquid layer without long-range order. Scanning the physisorbed layer with a sample bias higher than +1.2 V leads to dissociation via cleaving the H-S bond. One of the dissociation products, ethylthiolate, forms a double-row structure with the rows aligned in one of the ?112?? directions. These double rows arise from the Au-adatom-dithiolate species: CH(3)CH(2)S-Au-SCH(2)CH(3).  相似文献

In-situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) coupled with cyclic voltammetry was used to examine the adsorption of carbon monoxide (CO) molecules on an ordered Au(111) electrode in 0.1 M HClO4. Molecular resolution STM revealed the formation of several commensurate CO adlattices, but the (9 x radical 3) structure eventually prevailed with time. The CO adlayer was completely electrooxidized to CO2 at 0.9 V versus RHE in CO-free 0.1 M HClO(4), as indicated by a broad and irreversible anodic peak which appeared at this potential in a positive potential sweep from 0.05 to 1.6 V. A maximal coverage of 0.3 was estimated for CO admolecules from the amount of charge involved in this feature. Real-time in-situ STM imaging allowed direct visualization of the adsorption process of CO on Au(111) at 0.1 V, showing the lifting of (radical 3 x 22) reconstruction of Au(111) and the formation of ordered CO adlattices. The (9 x radical 3) structure observed in CO-saturated perchloric acid has a coverage of 0.28, which is approximately equal to that determined from coulometry. Switching the potential from 0.1 to -0.1 V restored the reconstructed Au(111) with no change in the (9 x radical 3)-CO adlattice. However, the reconstructed Au(111) featured a pairwise corrugation pattern with two nearest pairs separated by 74 +/- 1 A, corresponding to a 14% increase from the ideal value of 65.6 A known for the ( radical 3 x 22) reconstruction. Molecular resolution STM further revealed that protrusions resulting from CO admolecules in the (9 x radical 3) structure exhibited distinctly different corrugation heights, suggesting that the CO molecules resided at different sites on Au(111). This ordered structure predominated in the potential range between 0.1 and 0.7 V; however, it was converted into new structures of (7 x radical 7) and ( radical 43 x 2 radical 13) on the unreconstructed Au(111) when the potential was held at 0.8 V for ca. 60 min. The coverage of CO adlayer decreased accordingly from 0.28 to 0.13 before it was completely removed from the Au(111) surface at more positive potentials.  相似文献

The formation of self-assembled monolayers of benzylmercaptan (BM) and p-cyanobenzylmercaptan (pCBM) on Au(111) surfaces is investigated by a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The NEXAFS results of pCBM are supported by ab initio calculations. It is found that BM as well as pCBM form well-ordered monolayers with the molecules oriented almost perpendicular to the surface. BM forms a ( radical 3 x radical 3)R30 degrees structure whereas pCBM forms a slightly different c(7 x 7) hexagonal structure. No phase separation is detected for the adsorption of a 1:1 mixture of the two molecules. The implications of the results for the covalent attachment of transition-metal complexes to thiol-functionalized surfaces are discussed.  相似文献

Scanning tunneling microscopy was used to characterize self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of octanethiol on Au(111), created using vapor deposition at elevated temperatures and ambient pressure. Monolayers contained large, close-packed ( radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees domains with sizes considerably larger than those typically formed from conventional solution-phase preparation and with crystallographically straight domain boundaries. New striped surface phases were also observed, including a 13 x radical3 phase with a density that was 69% of the close-packed density; these striped phases appeared topographically higher in STM images than close-packed monolayers.  相似文献

The tert-butanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) surfaces were prepared from various solvents and investigated by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and electrochemistry in aqueous environments. High-resolution STM images reveal a (radical(7) x radical(7))R19 degrees surface lattice structure, in contrast with the conventional lattice (radical(3) x radical(3))R30 degrees structure for straight-chain alkanethiol SAMs. Interestingly, such a branched monolayer shows electrochemical rectification toward redox probes. We suggest that electrochemical rectification could be a general characteristic of short-chain branched alkanthiol SAMs, and originate in localized electronic effects.

A rectangular (3 x 2 radical3) surface lattice for long-term-annealed dodecanethiol self-assembled monolayers on Au(111) is observed by ultra-high-vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy. The new lattice has the same density and a unit cell of the same size as the well-known c(4 x 2) reconstruction. In contrast, it does not show hexagonal symmetry but rather a sort of thiol pairing, leading to a shift in the binding position of every second molecule. The described structure is believed to be an intermediate phase close to desorption.  相似文献

4-methyl-4'-(n-mercaptoalkyl)biphenyl (CH3-C6H4-C6H4-(CH2)n-SH, n=3-6, BPn) monolayers assembled on Au(111)-(1x1) in 1,3,5,-trimethylbenzene (TMB) at various temperatures are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). High resolution STM images reveal that BP3 and BP5 form a (sqrt 3x2sqrt 3) repeating motif superimposed on a temperature-dependent Moire pattern. BP4 and BP6 adlayers are characterized by a coexisting (2sqrt 3x5sqrt 3) majority phase and a temperature-dependent (3xpsqrt 3) minority phase. Assembly at 60 degrees C or 90 degrees C leads to p=5. Compression of the adlayer was found at higher temperatures. Combined with high-resolution structure experiments, the electronic characteristics of BP3 and BP4 self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were studied by monitoring current-distance (iT-Deltaz) and current-voltage (iT-Ebias) characteristics in TMB employing a gold STM tip|BPn|Au(111)-(1x1) configuration. The semilogarithmic (iT-Deltaz) plots yielded three linear regions in the range 10 pA相似文献

The adsorption pattern of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) produced on a Au(111) surface was characterized. The Au(111) was modified with 11-amino-1-undecanethiol hydrochloride (AUT), 11-mercapto-1-undecanol (MUT), or 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) at an elevated temperature and pressure. The AuNPs aggregated on the AUT-SAM surface, whereas they were well dispersed on the MUT-SAM surface and localized on the MUA-SAM surface. The results suggest that interactions between AuNPs differ according to the degree of peeling of citrate-layer-capped AuNPs. The degree of peeling, which is related to both the surface randomness of the SAMs and the functional characteristics of the terminal group of each SAM, was discussed on the basis of scanning tunneling microscopy observations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analyses, and contact angle measurements. Our study shows that AuNP patterns can be controlled by changing the terminal group of the alkyl thiol SAM on a Au(111) surface.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanols (1-C(N)H(2N+1)OH) with varying carbon-chain lengths (N = 10-30) have been systematically studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the interfaces between alkanol solutions (or liquids) and Au(111) surfaces. The carbon skeletons were found to lie flat on the surfaces. This orientation is consistent with SAMs of alkanols on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and MoS2 surfaces, and also with alkanes on reconstructed Au(111) surfaces. This result differs from a prior report, which claimed that 1-decanol molecules (N = 10) stood on their ends with the OH polar groups facing the gold substrate. Compared to alkanes, the replacement of one terminal CH3 group with an OH group introduces new bonding features for alkanols owing to the feasibility of forming hydrogen bonds. While SAMs of long-chain alkanols (N > 18) resemble those of alkanes, in which the aliphatic chains make a greater contribution, hydrogen bonding plays a more important role in the formation of SAMs of short-chain alkanols. Thus, in addition to the titled lamellar structure, a herringbone-like structure, seldom seen in SAMs of alkanes, is dominant in alkanol SAMs for values of N < 18. The odd-even effect present in alkane SAMs is also present in alkanol SAMs. Thus, the odd N alkanols (alkanols with an odd number of carbon atoms) adopt perpendicular lamellar structures owing to the favorable interactions of the CH3 terminal groups, similar to the result observed for odd alkanes. In contrast to alkanes on Au(111) surfaces, for which no SAMs on an unreconstructed gold substrate were observed, alkanols are capable of forming SAMs on either the reconstructed or the unreconstructed gold surfaces. Structural models for the packing of alkanol molecules on Au(111) surfaces have been proposed, which successfully explain these experimental observations.  相似文献

This article concerns the growth of an atomic layer of Pb on the Au(111)( radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees -I structure. The importance of this study lies in the use of Pb underpotential deposition (UPD) as a sacrificial layer in surface-limited redox replacement (SLRR). SLRR reactions are being applied in the formation of metal nanofilms via electrochemical atomic layer deposition (ALD). Pb UPD is a surface-limited reaction, and if it is placed in a solution of ions of a more noble metal, redox replacement can occur, but limited by the amount of Pb present. Pb UPD is a candidate for use as a sacrificial layer for replacement by any more noble element. It has been used by this group for both Cu and Pt nanofilm formation using electrochemical ALD. The I atom layer was intended to facilitate electrochemical annealing during nanofilm growth. Two distinctly different Pb atomic layer structures are reported, studied using in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with an electrochemical flow cell and ultrahigh vacuum surface analysis combined directly with electrochemical reactions (UHV-EC). Starting with the initial Au(111)( radical3 x radical3)R30 degrees -I, 1/3 monolayer of I on the Au(111) surface, Pb deposition began at approximately 0.1 V. The first Pb UPD structure was observed just below -0.2 V and displayed a (2 x radical3)-rect unit cell, for a structure composed of 1/4 monolayer each of Pb and I. The I atoms fit in Pb 4-fold sites, on the Au(111) surface. The structure was present in domains rotated by 120 degrees. Deposition to -0.4 V resulted in complete loss of the I atoms and formation of a Pb monolayer on the Au(111), which produced a Moiré pattern, due to the Pb and Au lattice mismatch. These structures represent two well-defined starting points for the growth of nanofilms of other more noble elements. It is apparent from these studies that the adsorption of I- on Pb is weak, and it will rinse away. If Pb is used as a sacrificial metal in an electrochemical ALD cycle and adsorbed I atoms are employed for electrochemical annealing, I atoms will need to be applied each cycle.  相似文献

The electronic properties of alkanethiolate [CH3(CH2)nS-, n = 9 and 11] and alkaneselenolate [CH3(CH2)nSe-, n = 9 and 11] self-assembled monolayers on Au{111} have been quantitatively compared. Simultaneously acquired apparent tunneling barrier height (ATBH) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images reveal that alkanethiolate molecules have a lower barrier to tunneling, and therefore a higher conductance than alkaneselenolates of the same alkyl chain length. Molecular and contact conductance differences were elucidated by using observed STM topographic tunneling height differences between the analogous species. This apparent topographic difference combined with comparative ATBH data indicate that the observed decrease in conductance for alkaneselenolates compared to alkanethiolates originates exclusively from the Au-chalcogenide physical, chemical, and electronic contact.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cobalt(II) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-tert-butylphenyl)-porphyrin, a promising material for optical, photoelectrochemical, and chemical sensor applications, were prepared on Au(111) via axial ligation to 4-aminothiophenol, and studied by several surface science techniques. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) measurements showed the apparent topology of the Au(111) herringbone structure reconstruction, but with bias-dependent contrast images and asymmetric I/V characteristics. Photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of metalloporphyrins on the surface, whereas near-edge X-ray absorption (NEXAFS) measurements revealed that the porphyrin ring was tilted by about 70 degrees with respect to the surface plane. The above effects are ascribed to the presence of oriented molecular dipole layers between the metal and the organic material as confirmed by a comparison with first-principles density-functional theory calculations. The measured bias-dependent STM profiles have been reproduced by a simple monodimensional tunneling model.  相似文献

We report on density functional theory calculations of the electronic structure of Au(111)/molecule//Au(111) junctions in which thiol molecules are chemically bound at one end to a gold electrode (the "substrate"), while the other end has a separation of a few to several angstroms from a second gold electrode (the "tip"). Our goal is to investigate the role of different molecular terminal groups and of the tip-molecule distance either on the spatial dependence of the local density of states (LDOS) at the Fermi energy E(f) or on the energy dependence of the projected density of states onto different molecular subunits. We consider conjugated diphenylthiol (SPh2R) molecules with terminal groups R = H, SH, CH3, or CF3 as well as "mixed" conjugated-saturated phenylthiol-pentane (SPhC4CH3) and butanethiol-toluene (SC4PhCH3) molecules. For SPh2R molecules, the LDOS at E(f) exhibits an oscillatory exponential decay along the molecule, with an average decay constant that depends weakly on the R terminal group. For the mixed aromatic-aliphatic molecules instead, there are large differences in the LDOS at E(f), with SC4PhCH3 showing a much larger LDOS in the proximity of the terminal CH3 group than SPhC4CH3.  相似文献

The structure, the surface bonding, and the energetics of alkanethiols adsorbed on Cu(111), Ag(111), and Au(111) surfaces were studied under low and high coverages. The potential energy surfaces (PES) for the thiol/metal interaction were investigated in the absence and presence of externally applied electric fields in order to simulate the effect of the electrode potential on the surface bonding. The electric field affects the corrugation of the PES which decreases for negative fields and increases for positive fields. In the structural investigation, we considered the relaxation of the adsorbate and the surface. The highest relaxation in a direction perpendicular to the surface was observed for gold atoms, whereas silver atoms presented the highest relaxation in a plane parallel to the surface. The surface relaxation is more important in the low coverage limit. The surface bonding was investigated by means of the total and projected density of states analysis. The highest ionic character was observed on the copper surface whereas the highest covalent character occurs on gold. This leads to a strong dependence of the PES with the tilt angle of the adsorbate on Au(111) whereas this dependence is less pronounced on the other metals. Thus, the adsorbate-relaxation and the metal-relaxation contributions to the binding energy are more important on gold. The adsorption of thiols on gold was investigated on the 111 surface as well as on a surface with gold adatoms in order to elucidate the effect of thiols on the surface diffusion of gold. The CH(3)CH(2)S radical adsorbs ontop of the gold adatom. The diffusional barrier of the CH(3)CH(2)SAu species is lower than that for a bare gold adatom and is also lower than that for the bare thiol radical. The adsorption of the molecular species CH(3)SH and CH(3)CH(2)SH was also investigated on Au(111). They adsorb via the sulfur atom ontop of a gold atom. On the other hand, the adsorption of the alkanethiol radicals on the perfect 111 surfaces occurs on the face centered cubic (fcc)-bridge site in the low coverage limit for all metals and shifts toward the fcc site at high coverage on copper and silver.  相似文献
