The complementary threshold ionization techniques of MATI and ZEKE spectroscopy have been used to reveal well-resolved, long-lived (>10 micros) hydrogenic Rydberg series (50< or =n< or =98) in a van der Waals complex formed between a polyatomic molecule and a diatomic molecule for the first time. The series are observed within 50 cm(-1) of the adiabatic ionization threshold as well as two core-excited thresholds corresponding to excitation of up to two quanta in the van der Waals vibrational mode.  相似文献

A Rydberg atom embedded in a plasma can experience penetration by slowly moving electrons within its volume. The original pure Coulomb potential must now be replaced by a screened Coulomb potential which contains either a screening length Rs or a screening factor A = Rs -1 . For any given discrete energy level, there is a Critical Screening Factor (CSF) Ac beyond which the energy level disappears (by merging into the continuum). Analytical results are obtained for the classical dependence of the energy on the screening factor, for the CSF, and for the critical radius of the electron orbit for Circular Rydberg States (CRS) in this screened Rydberg atom. The results are derived for any general form of the screened Coulomb potential and are applied to the particular case of the Debye potential. We also show that CRS can temporarily exist above the ionization threshold and are therefore the classical counterparts of quantal discrete states embedded into continuum. The results are significant not only to Rydberg plasmas, but also to fusion plasmas, where Rydberg states of multi-charged hydrogen-like ions result from charge exchange with hydrogen or deuterium atoms, as well as to dusty/complex plasmas.  相似文献

The van der Waals potential of two atoms in the presence of an arbitrary arrangement of dispersing and absorbing magnetoelectric bodies is studied. Starting from a polarizable atom placed within a given geometry, its interaction with a second polarizable/magnetizable atom is deduced from its Casimir-Polder interaction with a weakly polarizable/magnetizable test body. The general expressions for the van der Waals potential obtained thusly are illustrated by considering first the case of two atoms in free space, with special emphasis on the interaction between (i) two polarizable atoms and (ii) a polarizable and a magnetizable atom. Furthermore, the influence of magnetoelectric bodies on the van der Waals interaction is studied in detail for the example of two atoms placed near a perfectly reflecting plate or a magnetoelectric half space, respectively. It is suggested that the strength of nuclear colour van der Waals interaction, if present, can be determined by measuring deviations from Rutherford scattering of charged hadrons from nuclei, at energies well below the Coulomb barrier. Experimental limit on the strength of such a potential is obtained asλ<50, when the colour van der Waals potential is given byV(r)=λ(hc/r 0)(r 0/r)7, withr 0, the scaling length, taken as 1 fm. This limit is obtained from an analysis of existing experiments and by performing scattering experiments of 3–4.6 MeV protons from a208Pb target.  相似文献

The ionization dynamics of a Rydberg hydrogen atom in a generalized van der Waals potential is studied using a semiclassical analysis of photoionization microscopy. Interference patterns of the 2-D radial probability density of the electrons escaping from a photoionization process have been calculated to simulate the patterns recorded on a position-sensitive detector. The added contributions from different ionization trajectories from the atom to the detector generate the interference pattern. The interference pattern is sensitive to one of the parameters governing the electron motion in the generalized van der Waals potential. The photoionization microscopy pattern can therefore be controlled by changes in the external potential.  相似文献

Based on the continuum Lennard-Jones model, the van der Waals interaction of two concentric and eccentric carbon nanocones with different or identical sizes are investigated in this paper. Also, on the basis of classical mathematical modeling techniques, a new semi-analytical solution is given to evaluate the van der Waals potential energy and interaction force distributions of two concentric carbon nanocones. Finally, a universal potential energy is presented for the carbon nanocones.  相似文献

We study the spontaneous emission of atoms near an optical nanofiber and analyze the coupling efficiency of the spontaneous emission into a nanofiber. We also investigate the influence of the van der Waals interaction of atoms with the surface of the optical nanofiber on the spectrum of coupled light. Using, as an example, 85Rb atoms we show that the van der Waals interaction may considerably extend the red wing of the spontaneous emission line and, accordingly, produce a well-defined asymmetry of the spontaneous emission spectrum coupled into an optical nanofiber.  相似文献

Using a nano-scale grid as a phase-shifting component, an atom interferometer has been utilized to study atom-surface van der Waals (VdW) interactions. We report phase shifts on the order of 0.2 rad, with a few percent uncertainty. We also report the velocity-dependent attenuation of atomic de Broglie wave amplitude that occurs in conjunction with the observed phase shifts. From these data we deduce the strength of the VdW potential and its dependence on the atom-surface separation. We discuss how our measurements can be used to set limits on the strength of non-Newtonian gravity at short length scales and we discuss the possibility of measuring the atom-surface interactions over a larger range of atom-surface distances. We also compare our results to several theoretical predictions for the VdW potential of Li near a variety of surfaces.  相似文献

The van-der-Waals version of the second virial coefficient is not far from being exact if the model parameters are appropriately chosen. It is shown how the van-der-Waals resemblance originates from the interplay of thermal averaging and superposition of scattering phase shift contributions. The derivation of the two parameters from the quantum virial coefficient reveals a fermion-boson symmetry in non-ideal quantum gases. Numerical details are worked out for the Helium quantum gases.  相似文献

The behavior of the bulk two-point correlation function G(;T| d ) in d-dimensional system with van der Waals type interactions is investigated and its consequences on the finite-size scaling properties of the susceptibility in such finite systems with periodic boundary conditions is discussed within mean-spherical model which is an example of Ornstein and Zernike type theory. The interaction is supposed to decay at large distances r as r - (d + σ), with 2 < d < 4, 2 < σ < 4 and d + σ≤6. It is shown that G(;T| d ) decays as r - (d - 2) for 1 ≪r≪ξ, exponentially for ξ≪rr *, where r * = (σ - 2)ξlnξ, and again in a power law as r - (d + σ) for rr *. The radiative lifetimes of the Eu 4f76snp(8PJ or10PJ)Rydberg states with J=5/2 and 11/2 are investigated with a combination of multi-step laser excitation and pulsed electric field ionization,from which their dependence on the effective principal quantum number is observed.The lifetimes of 21 states are reported along with an evaluation of their experimental uncertainty.The influence of blackbody radiation,due to the oven temperature,on the lifetime of the higher-n states is detected.The non-hydrogen behavior of the investigated states is also observed.  相似文献

We report on the six-body van der Waals interactions within Rydberg atoms. Specifically, we focus on the octahedron case. The results are compared with previous calculations for two to five bodies' interactions. This research is useful for crystal structure in condensed matter physics, such as p-type doping in Silicon or other types of semiconductors. This research is also useful for studying big molecules in chemistry, chemical engineering, and other fields.  相似文献
