Organomodified montmorillonite (OMMT) was prepared using cetylalkyl trimethyl amine bromide. OMMT and wood flour (WF) were surface-modified by silane coupling agent. They were melt-blended with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and extruded into wood-plastic composite samples using one conical twin screw extruder. The effects of their contents on the composite mechanical properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy observed intercalation and dispersion of the OMMT. FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the silane-modification effects. The possible reaction mechanisms were proposed. After wood flour was modified by 1.5 phr silane, the impact strength and the tensile strength of wood flour-PVC composite were increased by 14.8% and 18.5%, respectively. Mechanical tests showed that the addition of OMMT did not enhance the untreated wood flour-PVC composites. However, adding 0.5% OMMT did improve the mechanical properties of the treated ones. The grafting improved the interfacial compatibility between components producing higher properties of the composites. Further addition of OMMT reinforced the composites. Too higher contents of silane and OMMT impaired some properties because of weak interfacial layer and higher concentrated stress. Cone calorimetry showed that the fire flame retardancy and smoke suppression of composites were strongly improved with the addition of OMMT.  相似文献

Organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) was used as synergist to enhance the flame-retardant and mechanical properties of poly(butylene succinate)/intumescent flame retardant (PBS/IFR) composites. The flame-retardant, thermal degradation and combustion properties of PBS and its flame-retardant composites were characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI) test, vertical burning (UL-94) test, thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimeter and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The results indicate that PBS/IFR composites exhibit excellent flame retardance when OMMT is at an appropriate content. PBS/IFR composite with 20 wt% IFR and 1.5 wt% OMMT has an LOI of 40.1% and can pass the UL-94 V0 rating. The synergistic effect between OMMT and IFR on the flame-retardant properties of PBS depends on the content of OMMT, and excessive OMMT diminish this synergistic effect. The possible flame-retardant mechanism of OMMT on PBS/IFR composite is proposed. The results of mechanical test also indicate that OMMT can effectively increase the notched impact strength of PBS/IFR composites.  相似文献

Silicone‐based impact modifiers were prepared in a previous study. The modifiers were composed of silicone/acrylic rubber cores and grafted acrylic shells. They improved the toughness of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and poly(methyl methacrylate). The silicone emulsion that was used to produce the silicone‐based impact modifiers was prepared via two routes: emulsion polymerization and bulk polymerization of octamethyltetracyclosiloxane. Many silicone‐based impact modifiers were produced that had different silicone/acrylic rubber characteristics. Through a toughness examination of modified PVC, the best composition of the silicone‐based impact modifiers was obtained, and the silicone content in the rubber composition was 25 wt %. The morphology of the silicone‐based impact modifiers, determined by transmission electron microscopy, was as follows: core and second shell polymers were mainly poly(butyl acrylate), and the first shell polymer was silicone. The silicone‐based impact modifiers were blended with engineering resins such as PVC, polycarbonate (PC), poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), and PC/PBT mixtures. The impact strength under standard conditions and after weathering test conditions for blends of the silicone‐based impact modifiers were investigated with respect to two commercially available acrylic and methyl methacrylate/butadiene/styrene impact modifiers. The results showed good weatherability and good toughness under low‐temperature conditions for the silicone‐based impact modifiers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of polyamide‐1010 (PA1010) and a thermoplastic poly(ester urethane) elastomer (TPU) were prepared by melt extrusion. The impact properties, phase structure, compatibility, and fracture morphology under impact were investigated for PA1010/TPU blends. The results indicated that TPU enhanced the impact strength of PA1010, and the best impact modification effect of the blends was obtained with 20 wt % TPU. The phase structure was investigated with scanning electron microscopy, and the compatibility was investigated with dynamic mechanical analysis and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The study of the fracture morphology of PA1010/TPU blends indicated that the fracture surface of the blends had special features, consisting of many fibrillar elastomer particles and a conglutination–multilayer structure, as well as many small tubers on this structure. These fracture phenomena could not be found on the fracture surface of pure PA1010. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 1177–1185, 2005  相似文献

The fracture behavior and deformation mechanisms of polypropylene modified by elastomeric metallocene‐catalyzed polyolefin blends were investigated under both static and dynamic loading conditions. The fracture toughness was evaluated with the J integral approach. The development of damage mechanisms was studied by the examination of fracture surfaces with scanning electron microscopy and by the examination of single‐edge, double‐notch, four‐point‐bending or low‐impact‐energy fractured samples with optical microscopy. In addition, tensile dilatometry measurements were carried out to determine the nature of the deformation micromechanisms. The fracture behavior and the size and shape of the damage zones were drastically influenced by the elastomeric particles and the imposed constraint. The role of the elastomeric particles was different, depending on the strain rate. Under impact loading, particle pullout and crazing were responsible for the increased fracture toughness of polypropylene. Under quasistatic loading, stable fracture growth was caused by particle cavitation, which promoted ductile tearing of polypropylene before failure continued in an unstable fashion via crazing. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Charpy drop‐weight‐impact and essential work of fracture (EWF) characteristics of maleic anhydride (MA)‐compatibilized styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene (SEBS)/polypropylene (PP) blends and their composites reinforced with short glass fibers (SGFs) were investigated. MA was grafted to either SEBS copolymer (SEBS‐g‐MA) or PP (PP‐g‐MA). The mPP blend was prepared by the compounding of 95% PP and 5% PP‐g‐MA. Drop‐weight‐impact results revealed that the mPP specimen had an extremely low impact strength. The incorporation of SEBS or SEBS‐g‐MA elastomers into mPP improved its impact strength dramatically. Similarly, the addition of SEBS was beneficial for enhancing the impact strength of the SGF/SEBS/mPP and SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/mPP hybrids. A scanning electron microscopy examination of the fractured surfaces of impact specimens revealed that the glass‐fiber surfaces of the SGF/SEBS/mPP and SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/mPP hybrids were sheathed completely with deformed matrix material. This was due to strong interfacial bonding between the phase components of the hybrids associated with the MA addition. Impact EWF tests were carried out on single‐edge‐notched‐bending specimens at 3 m s?1. The results showed that pure PP, mPP, and the composites only exhibited specific essential work. The nonessential work was absent in these specimens under a high‐impact‐rate loading condition. The addition of SEBS or SEBS‐g‐MA elastomer to mPP increased both the specific essential and nonessential work of fracture. This implied that elastomer particles contributed to the dissipation of energy at the fracture surface and in the outer plastic zone at a high impact speed of 3 m s?1. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of nylon 6 matrix viscosity and a multifunctional epoxy interfacial modifier on the notched impact strength of the blends of nylon 6 with a maleic anhydride modified polyethylene‐octene elastomer/semi‐crystalline polyolefin blend (TPEg) were studied by means of morphological observation, and mechanical and rheological tests. Because the viscosity of the TPEg is much higher than that of nylon 6, an increase in the viscosity of nylon 6 reduces the viscosity mismatch between the dispersed phase and the matrix, and increases notched impact strength of the blends. Moreover, addition of 0.3 to 0.9 phr of the interfacial modifier leads to a finer dispersion of the TPEg and greatly improves the notched impact strength of the nylon 6/TPEg blends. This is because the multi‐epoxy interfacial modifier can react with nylon 6 and the maleated TPEg. The reaction with nylon 6 increases the viscosity of the matrix while the coupling reaction at the interface between nylon 6 and the maleated TPEg leads to better compatibilization. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Immiscible polypropylene/ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate (PP/EVA) blends with two different compositions, one (PP/EVA = 80/20) exhibits the typical sea‐island morphology and the other (PP/EVA = 60/40) exhibits the cocontinuous morphology, were prepared with different contents of f‐MWCNTs. The fracture behaviors, including notched Izod impact fracture and single‐edge notched tensile (SENT) fracture, were comparatively studied to establish the role of f‐MWCNTs in influencing the fracture toughness of PP/EVA blends. Our results showed that, for PP/EVA (80/20) system, f‐MWCNTs do not induce the fracture behavior change apparently. However, for PP/EVA (60/40) system, the fracture toughness of the blend increases dramatically with the increasing of f‐MWCNTs content. More severe plastic deformation accompanied by the fibrillar structure formation was observed during the SENT test. Furthermore, SENT test shows that the significant improvement in fracture toughness of PP/EVA (60/40) with f‐MWCNTs is contributed to the simultaneous enhancement of crack initiation energy and crack propagation energy, but largely dominated by crack propagation stage. Further results based on crystalline structures and morphologies of the blends showed that a so‐called dual‐network structure of EVA and f‐MWCNTs forms in cocontinuous PP/EVA blends, which is thought to be the main reason for the largely improved fracture toughness of the sample. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(propylene) silica‐grafted‐hyperbranched polyester nanocomposites by grafting the modified hyperbranched polyester (Boltorn? H20), possessing theoretically 50% end carboxylic groups and 50% end hydroxyl groups, which endcapped with octadecyl isocyanate (C19), onto the surface of SiO2 particles (30 nm) through 3‐glycidoxy‐propyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS) was prepared. The effect of silica‐grafted‐modified Boltorn? H20 on the mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) was investigated by tensile and impact tests. The morphological structure of impact fracture surface and thermal behavior of the composites were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The melt viscosity of composites was investigated by melt flow index (MFI). The obtained results showed that: (1) the modified Boltorn? H20 was successfully grafted onto the SiO2 surface confirmed by FT‐IR and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis; (2) the incorporation of silica‐grafted‐modified Boltorn? H20 (3–5 wt% SiO2) greatly enhanced the notched impact strength as well the tensile strength of the composites; (3) the incorporation of silica‐grafted‐modified Boltorn? H20 had no influence on the melting temperature and crystallinity of PP phase; (4) the MFI of PP composites increased when the silica‐grafted‐modified Boltorn? H20 particles were added compared with PP/SiO2 or PP/SiO2‐GPTS composites. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Poly (vinyl chloride)/ethylene-vinyl acetate/montmorillonite (PVC/EVA/OMMT) composites were prepared by melt blending method. Two kinds of montmorillonites were organically modified by trimethyloctadecyl ammonium and dimethyl bis (hydrogenated tallow) ammonium, respectively. The morphology and tensile properties of the resultant composites were discussed in terms of the modifier type and OMMT content. The PVC/EVA/OMMT composites have intercalated structure, which is independent of the polarity of the modifiers, while the tensile properties show strong dependence on the modifier type. The OMMT modified by polar modifier gives higher tensile ductile and strength of PVC/EVA/OMMT composites.  相似文献

The toughening mechanisms of polypropylene filled with elastomer and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles were studied. Polypropylene/elastomer/CaCO3 composites were prepared on a twin‐screw extruder with a particle concentration of 0–32 vol %. The experiments included tensile tests, notched Izod impact tests, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the elastomer and CaCO3 particles dispersed separately in the matrix. The modulus of the composites increased, whereas the yield stress decreased with the filler concentration. The impact resistance showed a large improvement with the CaCO3 concentration. At the same composition (80/10/10 w/w/w), three types of CaCO3 particles with average diameters of 0.05, 0.6, and 1.0 μm improved the impact fracture energies comparatively. The encapsulation structure of the filler by the grafting elastomer had a detrimental effect on the impact properties because of the strong adhesion between the elastomer and filler and the increasing ligament thickness. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A Haake torque rheometer equipped with an internal mixer is used to study the influence of the amount of sodium montmorillonite (Na+‐MMT) and organically modified MMT (O‐MMT) on X‐ray diffraction (XRD), morphology, and mechanical characteristics of rigid poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC)/Na+‐MMT and PVC/O‐MMT nanocomposites, respectively. Results of XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that MMT is partially encapsulated and intercalated in the rigid PVC/Na+‐MMT nanocomposites. However, results of XRD and TEM show MMT is partially intercalated and exfoliated in the rigid PVC/O‐MMT nanocomposites. Tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation at break of the rigid PVC/MMT nanocomposites were improved simultaneously with adding 1–3 wt % Na+‐MMT or O‐MMT with respect to that of pristine PVC. However, the addition of Na+‐MMT or O‐MMT should be kept as not more than 3 wt % to optimize the mechanical properties and the processing stability of the rigid PVC/MMT nanocomposites. SEM micrographs of the fractured surfaces of the rigid PVC/Na+‐MMT and PVC/O‐MMT nanocomposites both before and after tensile tests were also illustrated and compared. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two kinds of bio‐resourced reactive diluents have been synthesized from linseed oil. The prepared epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) and the cyclocarbonated linseed oil (CLO) were separately blended with a petroleum‐based tetra‐functional epoxy resin (TGDDM) to improve its processability and to overcome the brittleness of the thermoset network therefrom. The linseed oil modifications were spectrally established, and processability improvement of the resin blends was rheologically confirmed. The curing of samples was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, and their mechanical properties (ie, tensile, flexural, fracture toughness, and adhesion) were investigated as well. Scanning electron microscopy images were obtained to reconfirm the toughness improvement of the modified thermosets. In contrast of the epoxidized soybean oil (ie, the most conventionally studied bio‐based reactive diluent), ELO and CLO had no negative effects on the thermoset material characteristics. They improved properties such as tensile strength (up to 43.2 MPa), fracture toughness (1.1 MPa m1/2), and peel‐adhesion strength (4.5 N/25 mm). It was concluded that ELO and CLO were efficient reactive diluents to be used in formulations of polymer composites, surface coatings, and structural adhesives based on epoxy resins.  相似文献

The nylon 1010/ethylene‐vinyl acetate rubber (EVM)/maleated ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA‐g‐MAH) ternary blends were prepared. The effect of EVM/EVA‐g‐MAH ratio on the toughness of blends was examined. A super tough nylon 1010 blends were obtained by the incorporation of both EVM and EVA‐g‐MAH. Impact essential work of fracture (EWF) model was used to characterize the fracture behavior of the blends. The nylon/EVM/EVA‐g‐MAH (80/15/5) blend had the highest total fracture energy at a given ligament length (5 mm) and the highest dissipative energy density among all the studied blends. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the EVM and EVA‐g‐MAH existed as spherical particles in nylon 1010 matrix and their size decreased gradually with increasing EVA‐g‐MAH content. Large plastic deformation was observed on the impact fracture surface of the nylon/EVM/EVA‐g‐MAH (80/15/5) blend and related to its high impact strength. Then with increasing EVA‐g‐MAH proportion, the matrix shear yielding of nylon/EVM/EVA‐g‐MAH blends became less obvious. EVM and EVA‐g‐MAH greatly increased the apparent viscosity of nylon 1010, especially at low shear rates. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 47: 877–887, 2009  相似文献

The high‐speed homogeneous shearing method was applied to prepare nanocomposites of cyanate ester (CE) with liquid polyurethane elastomer (PUR) and silica. To investigate the influence of various components on the morphology and properties of the ternary composites, the binary composites of CE/PUR and CE/silica were also involved in this article. The morphology of the cured materials of binary and ternary systems was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the results show that silica nanoparticles were uniformly distributed in the ternary and binary matrix. Phase separation of elastomer in composites was not observed by TEM. FTIR test and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) proved that chemical linking was existent between PUR and CE. Scanning electron microscopy examinations and mechanical properties tests were carried out. The results show that ternary composites displayed higher fracture toughness and impact strength compared with most of the binary systems. This suggests that the addition of PUR and nanosilica can synergistically improve the toughness of CE. DMA studies confirmed that the incorporation of silica can increase the storage modulus and Tg for CE and CE/PUR system, since there are a good adhesion and a strong hydrogen bonding between silica and polymers. The thermal property of ternary composites increases with the increase of silica nanoparticle loading. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 46: 1243–1251, 2008  相似文献

Polyamide 6/polypropylene (PA6/PP = 70/30 parts) blends containing 4 phr (parts per hundred resin) of organically modified clay (organoclay) toughened with maleated styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS-g-MA) were prepared by melt compounding using co-rotating twin-screw extruder followed by injection molding. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used to characterize the structure of the nanocomposites. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were determined by tensile, flexural, and notched Izod impact tests. The single edge notch three point bending test was used to evaluate the fracture toughness of SEBS-g-MA toughened PA6/PP nanocomposites. Thermal properties were studied by using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). XRD and TEM results indicated the formation of the exfoliated structure for the PA6/PP/organoclay nanocomposites with and without SEBS-g-MA. With the exception of stiffness and strength, the addition of SEBS-g-MA into the PA6/PP/organoclay nanocomposites increased ductility, impact strength and fracture toughness. The elongation at break and fracture toughness of PA6/PP blends and nanocomposites were increased with increasing the testing speed, whereas tensile strength was decreased. The increase in ductility and fracture toughness at high testing speed could be attributed to the thermal blunting mechanism in front of crack tip. DSC results revealed that the presence of SEBS-g-MA had negligible effect on the melting and crystallization behavior of the PA6/PP/organoclay nanocomposites. TGA results showed that the incorporation of SEBS-g-MA increased the thermal stability of the nanocomposite.  相似文献

Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR)/acrylate-terminated polyurethane (ATPU)/organo-modified montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites were prepared by the in situ intercalative polymerization method. Samples were prepared by the sequential mixing, i.e. mixture of the ATPU and styrene (S) and OMMT were prepared in the first step; UPR was then added to the pre-intercalates of ATPU/S/OMMT. Results indicate that the mechanical properties and thermal properties of UPR/ATPU/OMMT nanocomposites greatly depend on the amount of ATPU and OMMT. Results show that the addition of ATPU could increase the impact strength of UPR/ATPU composites, but the tensile strength, flexural strength and heat resistance of the materials are obviously decreased. When the weight ratio between UPR, ATPU and OMMT were 82:15:3, the impact strength and heat distortion-temperature of nanocomposite were greatly improved, meanwhile there was little change for other properties of the nanocomposites. The synergistic enhancement effects of ATPU and OMMT on the composites were observed. The structures and morphology of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.  相似文献

Bisphenol‐A‐based difunctional epoxy resin was modified with poly(ether ether ketone) with pendent tert‐butyl groups (PEEKT). PEEKT was synthesized by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 4,4′‐difluoro benzophenone with tert‐butyl hydroquinone in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone. Blends with various amounts of PEEKT were prepared by melt‐mixing. All the blends were homogeneous in the uncured state. The glass transition temperature of the binary epoxy/PEEKT blends was predicted using several equations. Reaction‐induced phase separation was found to occur upon curing with a diamine 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone. The phase morphology of the blends was studied using scanning electron microscopy. From the micrographs, it was found that PEEKT‐rich phase was dispersed in a continuous epoxy matrix. The domain size increased with the amount of PEEKT in the blends. The increase in domain size was due to the coalescence of the domains after phase separation. Dynamic mechanical analysis of the blends gave two peaks corresponding to epoxy‐rich phase and thermoplastic‐rich phase. The tensile strength and modulus of the blends remained close to that of the unmodified resin, while the flexural properties decreased with the addition of PEEKT to epoxy resin. The fracture toughness of the epoxy resin increased with the addition of PEEKT. Investigation of the fracture surfaces revealed evidences for local plastic deformation of the matrix, crack pinning, crack path deflection, and ductile tearing of PEEKT‐rich phase. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the initial decomposition temperature of the blends were close to that of the unmodified resin. Finally, the properties of the blends were compared with other modified PEEK/epoxy blends. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 2481–2496, 2007  相似文献
