Environmental metabolomics is a growing and emerging sub-discipline of metabolomics. Studies with earthworms have progressed from the initial stages of simple contact exposure tests to detailed studies of earthworm responses in soil. Over the past decade, a variety of endogenous metabolites have been identified as potential biomarkers of contaminant exposure. Furthermore, metabolomic methods have delineated responses from sub-lethal exposure of earthworms to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and metals in soil suggesting that environmental metabolomics may be used as a direct measure of contaminant bioavailability in soil. Environmental metabolomics has the potential to fill knowledge gaps related to earthworm toxicity and contaminant bioavailability. However, challenges with metabolite quantification and limited systems-level models of metabolic data require improvement before detailed models of “normal” responses can be developed and used routinely in assessment of contaminated sites. Nonetheless, environmental metabolomics is poised to improve our fundamental understanding of earthworm responses and toxicity to contaminants in soil. Single semiconductor quantum dots were embedded into polymer particles with diameters below 0.1 μm by an emulsion polymerization procedure or via a secondary dispersion approach. The photoluminescence properties of the nanocrystals are retained upon encapsulation, as demonstrated by fluorescence confocal microscopy.

Recent progress in studies of several types of core-shell structured electrode materials, including TiO2/C, Si/C, Si/SiO x , LiCoO2/C, and LiFePO4/C nanocomposites, including details of their preparation and their electrochemical performance is briefly reviewed. Results clearly show that the coating shell can effectively prevent the aggregation of the nanosized cores, which are the electrochemically active materials. In addition, the diffusion coefficients of lithium ions can be increased, and the reversibility of lithium intercalation and deintercalation is improved. As a result, the cycling behavior is greatly improved. The reviewed results suggest that core-shell nanocomposites are a good starting point for further development of new promising electrode materials.

The discovery and use of fluorescent proteins has revolutionized cellular biology. Despite the widespread use of visible fluorescent proteins as reporters and sensors in cellular environments the versatile photophysics of fluorescent proteins is still subject to intense research. Understanding the details of the photophysics of these reporters is essential for accurate interpretation of the biological and biochemical processes illuminated by fluorescent proteins. Some aspects of the complex photophysics of fluorescent proteins can only be observed and understood at the single-molecule level, which removes averaging inherent to ensemble studies. In this paper we review how single-molecule emission detection has helped understanding of the complex photophysics of fluorescent proteins.

Stress generation and fracture in lithium insertion materials   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A mathematical model that calculates volume expansion and contraction and concentration and stress profiles during lithium insertion into and extraction from a spherical particle of electrode material has been developed. The maximum stress in the particle has been determined as a function of dimensionless current, which includes the charge rate, particle size, and diffusion coefficient. The effects of pressure-driven diffusion and nonideal interactions between the lithium and host material have also been described. The model predicts that carbonaceous particles will fracture in high-power applications such as hybrid-electric vehicle batteries.

Protein microarray technology has enormous potential for in vitro diagnostics (IVD). Miniaturized parallelized immunoassays are perfectly suited to generating a maximum of diagnostically relevant information from minute amounts of sample whilst only requiring small amounts of reagent. Protein microarrays have become well-established research tools in basic and applied research and the first products are already on the market. This article reviews the current state of protein microarrays and discusses developments and future demands relating to protein arrays in their role as multiplexed immunoassays in the field of diagnostics.

The formation and the optical features of two-dimensional aggregates formed by DNA-directed immobilization and cross-linking of bifunctional DNA–gold nanoparticles at flat gold substrates are analyzed. The samples are structurally characterized by atomic force microscopy to evaluate the particle size, the particle densities, and the degree of aggregation. The optical characteristics determined by UV/visible measurements are correlated with the structural features observed.

The estimation of electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) frequencies from a given cyclic voltammetric data is analysed using underpotential deposition (UPD) of metals as an illustrative process. The crucial role played by the surface roughness of electrodes and electrosorption valency of the depositing species is pointed out. The computed EQCM frequency shifts for the UPD of Cd and Tl on polycrystalline Ag electrodes are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data.

The molecular geometries, relative stabilities, binding energies, and dissociation energies of NaDyBr4 and its molecular ion are discussed. Both the bidentate and tridentate isomers are stable for the neutral species, while only the bidentate form is stable for NaDyBr4 +.

Three periods of Pt–Ru research are considered step-by-step: the initial period after discovery (1963–1970); observation and classification of basic tendencies (like the effects of composition, segregation, structural features on the activity; up to 1990); nanostructural studies and molecular level consideration of electrocatalytic phenomena in combination with advanced applied studies of materials, mechanistic, and applied aspects (after 1990). The main idea of this review is to balance various aspects of Pt–Ru electrochemistry related to material science and electrocatalysis as well as to remember the early basic results being of importance for future understanding of Pt–Ru functional properties. Auditing of clinical laboratories is a recognized component of quality assurance practice. National regulatory standards, such as the U.S. Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and international voluntary standards, such as those promulgated by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), are used in the auditing. Professional organizations have long recognized the benefit of on-site, peer review. However, recent events in the U.S. question the validity of current auditing practices. To be effective, auditing must be part of a continuous quality improvement system and a key component of laboratory leadership.
