The optimal value of a polynomial optimization over a compact semi-algebraic set can be approximated as closely as desired by solving a hierarchy of semidefinite programs and the convergence is finite generically under the mild assumption that a quadratic module generated by the constraints is Archimedean. We consider a class of polynomial optimization problems with non-compact semi-algebraic feasible sets, for which an associated quadratic module, that is generated in terms of both the objective function and the constraints, is Archimedean. For such problems, we show that the corresponding hierarchy converges and the convergence is finite generically. Moreover, we prove that the Archimedean condition (as well as a sufficient coercivity condition) can be checked numerically by solving a similar hierarchy of semidefinite programs. In other words, under reasonable assumptions, the now standard hierarchy of semidefinite programming relaxations extends to the non-compact case via a suitable modification.  相似文献

Completely positive (CP) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of CP matrices, allow to reformulate or approximate a general polynomial optimization problem (POP) with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CP tensors. Similarly, completely positive semidefinite (CPSD) tensors, which correspond to a generalization of positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices, can be used to approximate general POPs with a conic optimization problem over the cone of CPSD tensors. In this paper, we study CP and CPSD tensor relaxations for general POPs and compare them with the bounds obtained via a Lagrangian relaxation of the POPs. This shows that existing results in this direction for quadratic POPs extend to general POPs. Also, we provide some tractable approximation strategies for CP and CPSD tensor relaxations. These approximation strategies show that, with a similar computational effort, bounds obtained from them for general POPs can be tighter than bounds for these problems obtained by reformulating the POP as a quadratic POP, which subsequently can be approximated using CP and PSD matrices. To illustrate our results, we numerically compare the bounds obtained from these relaxation approaches on small scale fourth-order degree POPs.  相似文献

We present a decomposition-approximation method for generating convex relaxations for nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP). We first develop a general conic program relaxation for QCQP based on a matrix decomposition scheme and polyhedral (piecewise linear) underestimation. By employing suitable matrix cones, we then show that the convex conic relaxation can be reduced to a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. In particular, we investigate polyhedral underestimations for several classes of matrix cones, including the cones of rank-1 and rank-2 matrices, the cone generated by the coefficient matrices, the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and the cones induced by rank-2 semidefinite inequalities. We demonstrate that in general the new SDP relaxations can generate lower bounds at least as tight as the best known SDP relaxations for QCQP. Moreover, we give examples for which tighter lower bounds can be generated by the new SDP relaxations. We also report comparison results of different convex relaxation schemes for nonconvex QCQP with convex quadratic/linear constraints, nonconvex quadratic constraints and 0–1 constraints.  相似文献

A standard quadratic problem consists of finding global maximizers of a quadratic form over the standard simplex. In this paper, the usual semidefinite programming relaxation is strengthened by replacing the cone of positive semidefinite matrices by the cone of completely positive matrices (the positive semidefinite matrices which allow a factorization FF T where F is some non-negative matrix). The dual of this cone is the cone of copositive matrices (i.e., those matrices which yield a non-negative quadratic form on the positive orthant). This conic formulation allows us to employ primal-dual affine-scaling directions. Furthermore, these approaches are combined with an evolutionary dynamics algorithm which generates primal-feasible paths along which the objective is monotonically improved until a local solution is reached. In particular, the primal-dual affine scaling directions are used to escape from local maxima encountered during the evolutionary dynamics phase.  相似文献

Consider the N-person non-cooperative game in which each player’s cost function and the opponents’ strategies are uncertain. For such an incomplete information game, the new solution concept called a robust Nash equilibrium has attracted much attention over the past several years. The robust Nash equilibrium results from each player’s decision-making based on the robust optimization policy. In this paper, we focus on the robust Nash equilibrium problem in which each player’s cost function is quadratic, and the uncertainty sets for the opponents’ strategies and the cost matrices are represented by means of Euclidean and Frobenius norms, respectively. Then, we show that the robust Nash equilibrium problem can be reformulated as a semidefinite complementarity problem (SDCP), by utilizing the semidefinite programming (SDP) reformulation technique in robust optimization. We also give some numerical example to illustrate the behavior of robust Nash equilibria.  相似文献

We consider two min–max problems (1) minimizing the supremum of finitely many rational functions over a compact basic semi-algebraic set and (2) solving a 2-player zero-sum polynomial game in randomized strategies with compact basic semi-algebraic sets of pure strategies. In both problems the optimal value can be approximated by solving a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations, in the spirit of the moment approach developed in Lasserre (SIAM J Optim 11:796–817, 2001; Math Program B 112:65–92, 2008). This provides a unified approach and a class of algorithms to compute Nash equilibria and min–max strategies of several static and dynamic games. Each semidefinite relaxation can be solved in time which is polynomial in its input size and practice on a sample of experiments reveals that few relaxations are needed for a good approximation (and sometimes even for finite convergence), a behavior similar to what was observed in polynomial optimization.  相似文献

We consider the problem of minimizing a polynomial over a set defined by polynomial equations and inequalities. When the polynomial equations have a finite set of complex solutions, we can reformulate this problem as a semidefinite programming problem. Our semidefinite representation involves combinatorial moment matrices, which are matrices indexed by a basis of the quotient vector space ℝ[x 1, . . . ,x n ]/I, where I is the ideal generated by the polynomial equations in the problem. Moreover, we prove the finite convergence of a hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations introduced by Lasserre. Semidefinite approximations can be constructed by considering truncated combinatorial moment matrices; rank conditions are given (in a grid case) that ensure that the approximation solves the original problem to optimality. We consider a matrix approximation problem arising in the study of entanglement in quantum physics. This notion represents a certain type of correlations between subsystems in a composite quantum system. The states of a system are described by a density matrix, which is a positive semidefinite matrix with trace one. The goal is to approximate such a given density matrix by a so-called separable density matrix, and the distance between these matrices gives information about the degree of entanglement in the system. Separability here is expressed in terms of tensor products. We discuss this approximation problem for a composite system with two subsystems and show that it can be written as a convex optimization problem with special structure. We investigate related convex sets, and suggest an algorithm for this approximation problem which exploits the tensor product structure in certain subproblems. Finally some computational results and experiences are presented.  相似文献

The maximum stable set problem is a well-known NP-hard problem in combinatorial optimization, which can be formulated as the maximization of a quadratic square-free polynomial over the (Boolean) hypercube. We investigate a hierarchy of linear programming relaxations for this problem, based on a result of Handelman showing that a positive polynomial over a polytope with non-empty interior can be represented as conic combination of products of the linear constraints defining the polytope. We relate the rank of Handelman’s hierarchy with structural properties of graphs. In particular we show a relation to fractional clique covers which we use to upper bound the Handelman rank for perfect graphs and determine its exact value in the vertex-transitive case. Moreover we show two upper bounds on the Handelman rank in terms of the (fractional) stability number of the graph and compute the Handelman rank for several classes of graphs including odd cycles and wheels and their complements. We also point out links to several other linear and semidefinite programming hierarchies.  相似文献

We show that the Lasserre hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations with a slightly extended quadratic module for convex polynomial optimization problems always converges asymptotically even in the case of non-compact semi-algebraic feasible sets. We then prove that the positive definiteness of the Hessian of the associated Lagrangian at a saddle-point guarantees the finite convergence of the hierarchy. We do this by establishing a new sum-of-squares polynomial representation of convex polynomials over convex semi-algebraic sets.  相似文献

The convex feasibility problem asks to find a point in the intersection of finitely many closed convex sets in Euclidean space. This problem is of fundamental importance in the mathematical and physical sciences, and it can be solved algorithmically by the classical method of cyclic projections.In this paper, the case where one of the constraints is an obtuse cone is considered. Because the nonnegative orthant as well as the set of positive-semidefinite symmetric matrices form obtuse cones, we cover a large and substantial class of feasibility problems. Motivated by numerical experiments, the method of reflection-projection is proposed: it modifies the method of cyclic projections in that it replaces the projection onto the obtuse cone by the corresponding reflection.This new method is not covered by the standard frameworks of projection algorithms because of the reflection. The main result states that the method does converge to a solution whenever the underlying convex feasibility problem is consistent. As prototypical applications, we discuss in detail the implementation of two-set feasibility problems aiming to find a nonnegative [resp. positive semidefinite] solution to linear constraints in n [resp. in , the space of symmetric n×n matrices] and we report on numerical experiments. The behavior of the method for two inconsistent constraints is analyzed as well.  相似文献

The Markowitz Mean Variance model (MMV) and its variants are widely used for portfolio selection. The mean and covariance matrix used in the model originate from probability distributions that need to be determined empirically. It is well known that these parameters are notoriously difficult to estimate. In addition, the model is very sensitive to these parameter estimates. As a result, the performance and composition of MMV portfolios can vary significantly with the specification of the mean and covariance matrix. In order to address this issue we propose a one-period mean-variance model, where the mean and covariance matrix are only assumed to belong to an exogenously specified uncertainty set. The robust mean-variance portfolio selection problem is then written as a conic program that can be solved efficiently with standard solvers. Both second order cone program (SOCP) and semidefinite program (SDP) formulations are discussed. Using numerical experiments with real data we show that the portfolios generated by the proposed robust mean-variance model can be computed efficiently and are not as sensitive to input errors as the classical MMV??s portfolios.  相似文献

The minimum semidefinite rank of a graph is the minimum rank among Hermitian positive semidefinite matrices with the given graph. We explore connections between OS-sets and a lower bound for minimum rank related to zero forcing sets as well as exhibit graphs for which the difference between the minimum semidefinite rank and these lower bounds can be arbitrarily large.  相似文献

In this note, we give explicit expressions of Gauss sums for general (resp. special) linear groups over finite fields, which involve classical Gauss sums (resp. Kloosterman sums). The key ingredient is averaging such sums over Borel subgroups, i.e., the groups of upper triangular matrices. As applications, we count the number of invertible matrices of zero-trace over finite fields and we also improve two bounds of Ferguson, Hoffman, Luca, Ostafe and Shparlinski in [R. Ferguson, C. This paper proposes a conic approximation algorithm for solving quadratic optimization problems with linear complementarity constraints.We provide a conic reformulation and its dual for the original problem such that these three problems share the same optimal objective value. Moreover, we show that the conic reformulation problem is attainable when the original problem has a nonempty and bounded feasible domain. Since the conic reformulation is in general a hard problem, some conic relaxations are further considered. We offer a condition under which both the semidefinite relaxation and its dual problem become strictly feasible for finding a lower bound in polynomial time. For more general cases, by adaptively refining the outer approximation of the feasible set, we propose a conic approximation algorithm to identify an optimal solution or an \(\epsilon \)-optimal solution of the original problem. A convergence proof is given under simple assumptions. Some computational results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.  相似文献

We present a mathematical programming approach for elastoplastic constitutive initial value problems. Consideration of the associative plasticity and a linear isotropic hardening model allowed us to formulate the local discrete constitutive equations as conic programs. Specifically, we demonstrate that implicit return-mapping schemes for well-known yield criteria, such as the Rankine, von Mises, Tresca, Drucker-Prager, and Mohr–Coulomb criteria, can be expressed as second-order and semidefinite conic programs. Additionally, we propose a novel scheme for the numerical evaluation of the consistent elastoplastic tangent operator based on a first-order parameter derivative of the optimal solutions.  相似文献

We define multilinear extensions for multichoice games and relate them to probabilistic values and semivalues. We apply multilinear extensions to show that the Banzhaf value for a compound multichoice game is not the product of the Banzhaf values of the component games, in contrast to the behavior in simple games. Following Owen (Manag Sci 18:64–79, 1972), we integrate the multilinear extension over a simplex to construct a version of the Shapley value for multichoice games. We compare this new Shapley value to other extensions of the Shapley value to multichoice games. We also show how the probabilistic value (resp. semivalue, Banzhaf value, Shapley value) of a multichoice game is equal to the probabilistic value (resp. semivalue, Banzhaf value, Shapley value) of an appropriately defined TU decomposition game. Finally, we explain how semivalues, probabilistic values, the Banzhaf value, and this Shapley value may be viewed as the probability that a player makes a difference to the outcome of a simple multichoice game.  相似文献

We study the dynamical correlations between two coupled spins depending on time and the value of the spin quantum numbers. In the high-temperature approximation, we obtain analytic expressions for the mutual information and the quantum and classical parts of correlations. We consider both orthogonal and nonorthogonal measurements in the basis of spin coherent states. We show that at small times, the quantum part of correlations becomes much less than the classical part as the spin quantum numbers increase, while the situation is quite different at times equal to half the quantum period.  相似文献

We allocate surgery blocks to operating rooms (ORs) under random surgery durations. Given unknown distribution of the duration of each block, we investigate distributionally robust (DR) variants of two types of stochastic programming models using a moment-based ambiguous set. We minimize the total cost of opening ORs and allocating surgery blocks, while constraining OR overtime via chance constraints and via an expected penalty cost in the objective function, respectively in the two types of models. Following conic duality, we build equivalent 0–1 semidefinite programming (SDP) reformulations of the DR models and solve them using cutting-plane algorithms. For the DR chance-constrained model, we also derive a 0–1 second-order conic programming approximation to obtain less conservative solutions. We compare different models and solution methods by testing randomly generated instances. Our results show that the DR chance-constrained model better controls average and worst-case OR overtime, as compared to the stochastic programming and DR expected-penalty-based models. Our cutting-plane algorithms also outperform standard optimization solvers and efficiently solve 0–1 SDP formulations.  相似文献

This article studies some geometrical aspects of the semidefinite linear complementarity problem (SDLCP), which can be viewed as a generalization of the well-known linear complementarity problem (LCP). SDLCP is a special case of a complementarity problem over a closed convex cone, where the cone considered is the closed convex cone of positive semidefinite matrices. It arises naturally in the unified formulation of a pair of primal-dual semidefinite programming problems. In this article, we introduce the notion of complementary cones in the semidefinite setting using the faces of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and show that unlike complementary cones induced by an LCP, semidefinite complementary cones need not be closed. However, under R0-property of the linear transformation, closedness of all the semidefinite complementary cones induced by L is ensured. We also introduce the notion of a principal subtransformation with respect to a face of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and show that for a self-adjoint linear transformation, strict copositivity is equivalent to strict semimonotonicity of each principal subtransformation. Besides the above, various other solution properties of SDLCP will be interpreted and studied geometrically.  相似文献
