This article reports the attitudes of students towards mathematics after they had participated in an applied mathematical modelling project that was part of an Applied Mathematics course. The students were majoring in Earth Science at the National Taiwan Normal University. Twenty-six students took part in the project. It was the first time a mathematical modelling project had been incorporated into the Applied Mathematics course for such students at this University. This was also the first time the students experienced applied mathematical modelling and used the mathematical software. The main aim of this modelling project was to assess whether the students’ attitudes toward mathematics changed after participating in the project. We used two questionnaires and interviews to assess the students. The results were encouraging especially the attitude of enjoyment. Hence the approach of the modelling project seems to be an effective method for Earth Science students.  相似文献

The use of a project‐based science (PBS) approach to teaching encourages students to integrate mathematics and science in meaningful ways as they create projects. As a beginning study of how students use mathematics in such an approach, an analysis of 23 projects developed by preservice elementary teachers enrolled in an elementary science course was conducted. Findings showed that students made a number of different types of mathematical errors and underutilized data representation and summary forms. Implications included the importance of developing methods for supporting the use of mathematical tools in utilizing a project‐based approach and considering ways that such tools mediate scientific thinking.  相似文献

Applications and modelling have gained a prominent role in mathematics education reform documents and curricula. Thus, there is a growing need for studies focusing on the effective use of mathematical modelling in classrooms. Assessment is an integral part of using modelling activities in classrooms, since it allows teachers to identify and manage problems that arise in various stages of the modelling process. However, teachers’ difficulties in assessing student modelling work are a challenge to be considered when implementing modelling in the classroom. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate how teachers’ knowledge on generating assessment criteria for assessing student competence in mathematical modelling evolved through a professional development programme, which is based on a lesson study approach and modelling perspective. The data was collected with four teachers from two public high schools over a five-month period. The professional development programme included a cyclical process, with each cycle consisting of an introductory meeting, the implementation of a model-eliciting activity with students, and a follow-up meeting. The results showed that the professional development programme contributed to teachers’ knowledge for generating assessment criteria on the products, and the observable actions that affect the modelling cycle.  相似文献

Socio-cultural theories in mathematics education field recently emphasize the importance of the collective argumentation within small-group work. Since mathematical modelling tasks require a process in which students search for a solution for real life problems through small-group work, the arguments in this process become an issue of concern. This study examines the arguments constructed within the mathematical modelling cycle by considering the participants’ modelling processes. In this context, four primary pre-service mathematics teachers worked on a modelling task and their arguments were explained through the components of Toulmin’s argumentation schema. Findings revealed that the data and the claims of most of the arguments corresponded to the starting and ending points of the modelling transition in which the current arguments constructed. The existence of the arguments corresponded through warrant-claim originated from inquiring the assumptions in the modelling cycle. In addition, the participants made assumptions as warrants to support their arguments and as rebuttals to show the degree of certainty of claims in intra-group challenging situations. Both the warrants and the backings depended on modelling context as well as mathematics context.  相似文献

This article focuses on presenting success factors for a group of teachers in carrying out a learning study in mathematics at their school. The research questions are: what are the actions of the school teaching community during development projects? What factors enable a group of teachers to carry out a learning study at their school? Activity theory provides a holistic framework to investigate relationships among the components present in a learning study. The results are based on analysis of interviews with teachers, students, principal organizers of schools and project coordinators, videotaped lessons, students’ tests and minutes taken at meetings of mathematics projects. The results show that the skills of facilitators, the time devoted to collaborative work, the link to learning theory and avoiding overly comprehensive content when teaching lessons are important promoting factors in mathematics teaching. The findings raise important questions about the way in which teacher work within universities.  相似文献

Through the last three decades several hundred problem-oriented student-directed projects concerning meta-aspects of mathematics and science have been performed in the 2-year interdisciplinary introductory science programme at Roskilde University. Three selected reports from this cohort of project reports are used to investigate and present empirical evidence for learning potentials of integrating history and philosophy in mathematics education. The three projects are: (1) a history project about the use of mathematics in biology that exhibits different epistemic cultures in mathematics and biology. (2) An educational project about the difficulties of learning mathematics that connects to the philosophy of mathematics. (3) A history of mathematics project that connects to the sociology of multiple discoveries. It is analyzed and discussed in what sense students gain first hand experiences with and learn about meta-aspects of mathematics and their mathematical foundation through the problem-oriented student-directed project work.  相似文献

This paper considers a second-year Mathematical Aspects in Architectural Design course, which relies on a first-year mathematics course and offers mathematical learning as part of hands-on practice in architecture design studio. The 16-hour course consisted of seminar presentations of mathematics concepts, their application to covering the plane by regular shapes (tessellations), and an architecture design project. The course follow-up examined the features of mathematical learning in the studio environment using qualitative methods. It showed students’ curiosity and motivation to deepen in mathematical subjects and use them in their tessellation design projects. The majority of the students refreshed and practically applied their background mathematical knowledge, especially in calculus, on a need-to-know basis.  相似文献

Findings from an on-going design experiment within a year-long graduate course for middle school teachers of mathematics are reported. The purpose of the course was to help teachers assist students in transitioning from arithmetic to algebraic reasoning. Goals included developing teachers' ability to interpret, compare, and generalize across multiple mathematical solutions and to help teachers see and explain opportunities for algebraic thinking in their curriculum. To achieve these goals, we developed contrasting-cases instruction grounded in cognitive theory. Based on a pre-posttest design and a video assessment task developed by the researchers, teachers improved significantly on measures of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) related to course goals, but not on a measure of spontaneous reflection or algebra content knowledge. Future work will improve the course in an attempt to promote better learning through reflection and better transfer of PCK to classroom practice.  相似文献

Technological advances require that basic science courses for engineering, including Linear Algebra, emphasize the development of mathematical strengths associated with modelling and interpretation of results, which are not limited only to calculus abilities. Based on this consideration, we have proposed a project-based learning, giving a dynamic classroom approach in which students modelled real-world problems and turn gain a deeper knowledge of the Linear Algebra subject. Considering that most students are digital natives, we use the e-portfolio as a tool of communication between students and teachers, besides being a good place making the work visible. In this article, we present an overview of the design and implementation of a project-based learning for a Linear Algebra course taught during the 2014–2015 at the ‘ETSEIB'of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).  相似文献

This article is based on research completed within an ongoing project to develop a calculus course which serves as the foundation for the mathematical education of undergraduate students who are training to become elementary teachers. Several research-based activities have been developed, tested, and refined. In this paper we discuss how the design research approach was used to create and implement an instructional task that introduces the concept of limit of a sequence using popular characters from a children’s television show. We present the intuition that students brought to the instructional sequence, the development of the tasks based on the instructional design theory of Realistic Mathematics Education, and the evolution of the intuition that students displayed after instruction. Results include the instructional task developed and student work which reveals that students use context, informal notions of limit, and the notion of “arbitrarily close” to write about their limit understandings.  相似文献

This article describes a mathematical biology workshop givento secondary school teachers of the Danville area in Virginia,USA. The goal of the workshop was to enable teams of teacherswith biology and mathematics expertise to incorporate lessonplans in mathematical modelling into the curriculum. The biologicalfocus of the activities is the lactose operon in Escherichiacoli, one of the first known intracellular regulatory networks. The modelling approach utilizes Boolean networks and tools fromdiscrete mathematics for model simulation and analysis. Theworkshop structure simulated the team science approach commonin today's practice in computational molecular biology and thusrepresents a social case study in collaborative research. Theworkshop provided all the necessary background in molecularbiology and discrete mathematics required to complete the project. The activities developed in the workshop show students the valueof mathematical modelling in understanding biochemical networkmechanisms and dynamics. The use of Boolean networks, ratherthan the more common systems of differential equations, makesthe material accessible to students with a minimal mathematicalbackground. High school students can be exposed to the excitement of mathematicalbiology from both the biological and mathematical point of view.Through the development of instructional modules, high schoolbiology and mathematics courses can be joined without havingto restructure the curriculum for either subject. The relevanceof an early introduction to mathematical biology allows studentsnot only to learn curriculum material in a innovative setting, but also creates an awareness of new educational and careeropportunities that are arising from the interconnections betweenbiological and mathematical sciences. The materials used in this workshop are available at a websitecreated by the directors: http://polymath.vbi.vt.edu/mathbio2006/.  相似文献

Teaching mathematics through problem solving is a challenge for teachers who learned mathematics by doing exercises. How do teachers develop their own problem solving abilities as well as their abilities to teach mathematics through problem solving? A group of teachers began the journey of learning to teach through problem solving while taking a Teaching Elementary School Mathematics graduate course. This course was designed to engage teachers in problem solving during class meetings and required them to do problem solving action research in their classrooms. Although challenged by the course problem solving work, teachers became more comfortable with the mathematics and recognized the importance of group work while problem solving. As they worked with their students, teachers were more confident in their students' abilities to be successful problem solvers. For some teachers, a strong problem solving foundation was established. For others, the foundation was more tentative.  相似文献

To make progress toward ambitious and equitable goals for students’ mathematical development, teachers need opportunities to develop specialized ways of knowing mathematics such as mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) for their work with students in the classroom. Professional learning communities (PLCs) are a common model used to support focused teacher collaboration and, in turn, foster teacher development, instructional improvement, and student outcomes. However, there is a lack of specificity in what is known about teachers’ work in PLCs and what teachers can gain from those experiences, despite broad claims of their benefit. We discuss an investigation of the work of secondary mathematics teachers in PLCs at two high schools to describe and explicate possible opportunities for teachers to develop the mathematical knowledge needed for the work of teaching and the ways in which these opportunities may be pursued or hindered. The findings show that, without pointed focus on mathematical content, opportunities to develop MKT can be rare, even among mathematics teachers. Two detailed images of teacher discussion are shared to highlight these claims. This article contributes to the ongoing discussion about the affordances and limitations of PLCs for mathematics teachers, considerations for their use, and how they can be supported.  相似文献

This article presents the results of two studies on using aninnovative pedagogical strategy in teaching mathematical modellingand applications to engineering students. Both studies are dealingwith introducing non-traditional contexts for engineering studentsin teaching/learning of mathematical modelling and applications:environment and ecology. The aims of using these contexts were:to introduce students to some of the techniques, methodologiesand principles of mathematical modelling for ecological andenvironmental systems; to involve the students in solving real-lifeproblems adjusted to their region emphasizing the aspects ofboth survival (short term) and sustainability (long term); toencourage students to pay attention to environmental issues. On one hand, the contexts are not directly related to engineering. On the other hand, the chances are that many graduates of engineeringwill deal with mathematical modelling of environmental systemsin one way or another in their future work because nearly everyengineering activity has an impact on the environment. The firststudy is a parallel study conducted in New Zealand and Germanysimultaneously with first-year students studying engineeringmathematics. The second study is a case study of the experimentalcourse Mathematical Modelling of Survival and Sustainabilitytaught to a mixture of year 2–5 engineering students inGermany by a visiting lecturer from New Zealand. The modelsused with the students from both studies had several specialfeatures. Analysis of students’ responses to questionnaires, their comments and attitudes towards the innovative approachin teaching are presented in the article.  相似文献

The paper describes an exercise that was developed in order to provide students on a mathematical modelling course with a pseudo‐practical application of elementary probability theory. The central idea is that the carrying‐out of tests on pooled samples might, in certain circumstances, be more economical than the testing of samples singly. Experienced teachers should have no difficulty in adapting this basic problem so as to render it amenable to students at different levels of attainment.  相似文献

The current study examines whether the engagement of mathematics teachers in modelling activities and subsequent changes in their conceptions about these activities affect their beliefs about mathematics. The sample comprised 52 mathematics teachers working in small groups in four modelling activities. The data were collected from teachers' Reports about features of each activity, interviews and questionnaires on teachers' beliefs about mathematics. The findings indicated changes in teachers' conceptions about the modelling activities. Most teachers referred to the first activity as a mathematical problem but emphasized only the mathematical notions or the mathematical operations in the modelling process; changes in their conceptions were gradual. Most of the teachers referred to the fourth activity as a mathematical problem and emphasized features of the whole modelling process. The results of the interviews indicated that changes in the teachers' conceptions can be attributed to structure of the activities, group discussions, solution paths and elicited models. These changes about modelling activities were reflected in teachers' beliefs about mathematics. The quantitative findings indicated that the teachers developed more constructive beliefs about mathematics after engagement in the modelling activities and that the difference was significant, however there was no significant difference regarding changes in their traditional beliefs.  相似文献

First year mathematics degree students at Leicester Polytechnic attend a course in mathematical modelling. The aim is to introduce the students to mathematical modelling concepts and to model development. Work is set and marked during the course and this forms a vital part of the students' assessment. In addition to this, however, the students are assessed by means of a three hour examination at the end of the year. This examination is significantly different from the normal ‘five out of eight’ type. The philosophy and organization of the examination are discussed in this paper. An example of a particular examination, that for June 1986, is included as an appendix to illustrate the points made in the discussion.  相似文献

This mixed-methods study describes classroom characteristics and student outcomes from university mathematics courses that are based in mathematics departments, targeted to future pre-tertiary teachers, and taught with inquiry-based learning (IBL) approaches. The study focused on three two-term sequences taught at two research universities, separately targeting elementary and secondary pre-service teachers. Classroom observation established that the courses were taught with student-centred methods that were comparable to those used in IBL courses for students in mathematics-intensive fields at the same institutions. To measure pre-service teachers' gains in mathematical knowledge for teaching, we administered the Learning Mathematics for Teaching (LMT) instrument developed by Hill, Ball and Schilling for in-service teacher professional development. Results from the LMT show that pre-service teachers made significant score gains from beginning to end of their course, while data from interviews and from surveys of learning gains show that pre-service teachers viewed their gains as relevant to their future teaching work. Measured changes on pre-/post-surveys of attitudes and beliefs were generally supportive of learning mathematics but modest in magnitude. The study is distinctive in applying the LMT to document pre-service teachers' growth in mathematical knowledge for teaching. The study also suggests IBL is an approach well suited to mathematics departments seeking to strengthen their pre-service teacher preparation offerings in ways consistent with research-based recommendations.  相似文献
