Applications and modelling have gained a prominent role in mathematics education reform documents and curricula. Thus, there is a growing need for studies focusing on the effective use of mathematical modelling in classrooms. Assessment is an integral part of using modelling activities in classrooms, since it allows teachers to identify and manage problems that arise in various stages of the modelling process. However, teachers’ difficulties in assessing student modelling work are a challenge to be considered when implementing modelling in the classroom. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate how teachers’ knowledge on generating assessment criteria for assessing student competence in mathematical modelling evolved through a professional development programme, which is based on a lesson study approach and modelling perspective. The data was collected with four teachers from two public high schools over a five-month period. The professional development programme included a cyclical process, with each cycle consisting of an introductory meeting, the implementation of a model-eliciting activity with students, and a follow-up meeting. The results showed that the professional development programme contributed to teachers’ knowledge for generating assessment criteria on the products, and the observable actions that affect the modelling cycle.  相似文献

This article presents the results of two studies on using aninnovative pedagogical strategy in teaching mathematical modellingand applications to engineering students. Both studies are dealingwith introducing non-traditional contexts for engineering studentsin teaching/learning of mathematical modelling and applications:environment and ecology. The aims of using these contexts were:to introduce students to some of the techniques, methodologiesand principles of mathematical modelling for ecological andenvironmental systems; to involve the students in solving real-lifeproblems adjusted to their region emphasizing the aspects ofboth survival (short term) and sustainability (long term); toencourage students to pay attention to environmental issues.On one hand, the contexts are not directly related to engineering.On the other hand, the chances are that many graduates of engineeringwill deal with mathematical modelling of environmental systemsin one way or another in their future work because nearly everyengineering activity has an impact on the environment. The firststudy is a parallel study conducted in New Zealand and Germanysimultaneously with first-year students studying engineeringmathematics. The second study is a case study of the experimentalcourse Mathematical Modelling of Survival and Sustainabilitytaught to a mixture of year 2–5 engineering students inGermany by a visiting lecturer from New Zealand. The modelsused with the students from both studies had several specialfeatures. Analysis of students’ responses to questionnaires,their comments and attitudes towards the innovative approachin teaching are presented in the article.  相似文献

A sizeable proportion of manufacturing expenses can be attributed to facility layout and material handling. Facility layout decisions involve designing the arrangement of elements in manufacturing systems. Among the most critical material handling decisions in this area are the arrangement and design of material flow patterns. This survey article reviews loop based facility planning and material handling decisions for trip based material handling equipment with an emphasis on unit load automated guided vehicles. Parametric scaling, the process of extrapolation of a modelling result to new parametric conditions, is often required in model optimization, and can be important if the effects of parametric uncertainty on model predictions are to be quantified. Knowledge of the functional relationship between the model solution (y) and the system parameters (α) may also provide insight into the physical system underlying the model. This paper examines strategies for parametric scaling, assuming that only the nominal model solution y(α) and the associated parametric sensitivity coefficients (?y/?α, ?2y/?α2, etc.) are known. The truncated Taylor series is shown to be a poor choice for parametric scaling, when y has known bounds. Alternate formulae are proposed which ‘build-in’ the constraints on y, thus expanding the parametric region in which the extrapolation may be valid. In the case where y has a temporal as well as a parametric dependence, the extrapolation may be further improved by removing from the Taylor series coefficients the ‘secular’ components, which refer to changes in the time scale of y(t), not to changes in y as a function of α.  相似文献

Our study aims to investigate what teachers do as they draw on their mathematical understanding and personal experiences to engage in social justice-oriented mathematical modeling. We analyze what ideas were expressed by teachers regarding their mathematical identities while they explore, wrestle with, and reconcile the underlying societal values that support mathematical models. We invited groups of teachers to make mathematical models for distributing school funding given real data from diverse, anonymized schools. Our results show that teachers created and refined diverse mathematical models to connect the mathematical world and societal space and these models reflected different societal values. Drawing on their own experiences, teachers expressed a sense of agency and critical consciousness while making decisions about school funding. This study delineates mathematical contents and processes necessary for advancing a societal goal of fairly distributing funds and we explore how teachers connect to this context as learners and members of society.  相似文献

Several studies have explored students’ understanding of the relationships between definite integrals and areas under curve(s). So far, however, there has been less attention to students’ understanding of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus (FTC). In addition, students’ metacognitive experiences and skills whilst solving FTC questions have not previously been explored. This paper explored students’ mathematical performance, metacognitive experiences and metacognitive skills in relation to FTC questions by interviewing nine university and eight Year 13 students. The findings show that several students had difficulty solving questions related to the FTC and that students’ metacognitive experiences and skills could be further developed.  相似文献

A new, viable mathematical approach to the analysis of porous flow is developed. Liquids and solids are modelled as sets of particles which interact in accordance with both long range (gravity) and short range (molecular type) forces. The resulting nonlinear, n-body problem is resolved numerically on a digital computer. A variety of fundamental porous flow type problems, solved on the University of Texas at Arlington IBM 370-155, are described and analysed.  相似文献

We consider integrable models in a totally discrete multidimensional space-time. Dynamic variables are associated with cells into which the space is decomposed by a set of intersecting hyperplanes. If the main goal of educational research and refinement of instructional program is to improve students' learning, it is necessary to assess students' emerging understandings and to see how they arise. The purpose of this paper is to address issues related to assessments of students' mathematical thinking in cross-national studies and then to discuss the lessons we may learn from these studies to assess and improve students' learning. In particular, the issues related to assessing U.S. and Chinese students' mathematical thinking were discussed. Then, this paper discussed the findings from two studies examining the impact of early algebra learning and teachers' beliefs on U.S. and Chinese students' mathematical thinking. Lastly, the issues related to interpreting and understanding the differences between U.S. and Chinese students' thinking were discussed.  相似文献

Several models have been developed in order to categorize the numerous expressions that people use in order to describe their emotional experiences. The focus of the present study is on one of these theoretical classifications proposed by Pekrun (1992) specifically concerning emotions which are directly related to learning and achievement in mathematics. In his model, emotions are classified according to their valence (positive vs. negative) and their level of activation. In testing the assumptions of this model, we investigated students' enjoyment, anxiety, anger and boredom experienced before, during, and after the completion of a math test. Correspondence analyses which were used to generate a graphical illustration of structural interrelationships between these emotions provide empirical support for the theoretical classification.  相似文献

We consider a family of integral equations used as models of some living systems. We prove that an integral equation is reducible to the equivalent Cauchy problem for a non-autonomous differential equation with point or distributed delay dependently on the choice of the survival function of system elements. We also study the issues of the existence, uniqueness, nonnegativity, and continuability of solutions. We describe all stationary solutions and obtain sufficient conditions for their asymptotic stability. We have found sufficient conditions for the existence of a limit of solutions on infinity and present an example of equations where the rate of generation of elements of living systems is described by a unimodal function (namely, the Hill function).  相似文献

Two mathematical models are proposed for passive, noninvasive ventilation. Both models take the form of coupled ordinary differential equations that describe the volume in a single compartment lung. One model is linear and the other nonlinear; both models are derived from basic pressure balances in the lung-ventilator system. These models are also compared to a physical model using a test lung. Both the physical and mathematical models exhibit instabilities that appear to have important clinical implications. The simulations from these models, and the forms of their governing equations, suggest that the presence of an airway leak proximal to the airway opening during pressure support noninvasive ventilation may render this mode of ventilation dynamically unstable. The mathematical models are extended to incorporate a special type of nonpassive ventilation where the total cycle times of the ventilator depend on the inspiratory phases of these cycles.  相似文献

A common problem in real-world DEA applications is that all inputs and outputs may not be equally relevant to the organizations analysed and their stakeholders. In many cases, one is also faced with a data set where the decision-making units do not clearly outnumber the quantity of inputs and outputs. This study reports an application where DEA embellished with weight restrictions is used to analyse the efficiency of public organizations to overcome the above-mentioned problems. Whereas there are numerous documented applications of weight-restricted DEA in the literature, the process of defining the actual weight restrictions is seldom described. However, that part — defining the actual weights restrictions based on price, preference or value information — is the most difficult step involved in using the weight-restricted DEA. Comparing various weight restriction schemes with real data suggests that the ability to consider and include preference information in DEA adds important insights into the analysis.  相似文献

This paper uses an experimentally verified model to explore the conditions for increasing productivity and yield of the ethanol fermentation process. Detailed bifurcation analysis is carried out to uncover the rich static and dynamic behavior of the fermentor with/without ethanol removal membranes. The emphasis is on producing higher ethanol yield and productivity through unconventional modes of operation. Possible increase of sugar conversion and ethanol productivity using periodic and chaotic operation at high sugar concentrations is investigated for continuous stirred tank fermentors with/without ethanol removal membranes. This study is the prelude to an extensive experimental program to investigate the chaotic behavior of an experimental fermentor with/without ethanol selective membrane leading to scaling up the experimental fermentor to an industrial sized fermentor.  相似文献

Solution methods for eigenvalue problems nonlinear in the spectral parameter are considered for model problems of the theory of microstrip transmission lines. The spectral properties of the Fredholm operator function F() in Sobolev weighting classes are considered. A numerical method is proposed for determining the approximate characteristic values of F().
