The mixing and decays of isoscalar mesons

The predictions of a linear mass mixing model for pseudoscalar and vector mesons, which incorporates the effects of radial excitations, are examined. Several analyses are made fitting in each case to a different experimental value of $\text{Γ(ψ →η'γ)}\text{Γ(ψ→ηγ)}$ upon which the η-η′ mixing pattern is very sensitive. Predictions for radiative transitions among the mesons and for the ratio of production amplitudes $\text{σ}\text{(π}{}^{\mathrm{?}}\text{p→η′n)}\text{σ}\text{(π}{}^{\mathrm{?}}\text{p→ηn)}$ are compared with experiments. Results indicate a preferred value of 3.1 for $\text{Γ(ψ→η′γ)}\text{Γ(ψ→ηγ)}$.     

Hadronic B decays to charmless VT final states

Charmless hadronic decays of B mesons to a vector meson (V) and a tensor meson (T) are analyzed in the frameworks of both flavor SU(3) symmetry and generalized factorization. We also make comments on B decays to two tensor mesons in the final states. Certain ways to test the validity of the generalized factorization are proposed, using decays. We calculate the branching ratios and CP asymmetries using the full effective Hamiltonian including all the penguin operators and the form factors obtained in the non-relativistic quark model of Isgur, Scora, Grinstein and Wise. Observation of charmless B meson decays

Using the ARGUS detector at the e⁺e⁻ storage ring DORIS II, we have observed charmless decays of B mesons into the final states pp̄π^± and pp̄π⁺π⁻. The significance of the signal corresponds to more than five standard deviations. The branching ratios are (5.2±1.4±1.9)×10⁻⁴ for the three-body and (6.0±2.0±2.2)×10⁻⁴ for the four-body final state. These decays cannot proceed via the dominant b→c transitions, and we show that they are not the result of penguin-type processes. Thus, the observed decays must represent b→u quark transitions. Consequently, the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V_ub is non-zero.     

Study of charmless hadronic B meson decays to pseudoscalar-vector final states

We report results of searches for charmless hadronic B meson decays to pseudoscalar( pi(+/-), K+/-, pi(0), or K(0)(S))-vector( rho, K(*), or omega) final states. By using 9.7x10(6) BB pairs collected with the CLEO detector, we report the first observation of B(-)--->pi(-)rho(0), B(0)-->pi(+/-)rho(-/+), and B(-)-->pi(-)omega, which are expected to be dominated by hadronic b-->u transitions. The measured branching fractions are (10.4(+3.3)(-3.4)+/-2.1)x10(-6), (27.6(+8.4)(-7.4)+/-4.2)x10(-6), and (11.3(+3.3)(-2.9)+/-1. 4)x10(-6), respectively. Branching fraction upper limits are set for all of the other decay modes investigated.     

Electroweak penguin effects in charmless B ±,0→PP and PV decays

Using the next-to-leading order low energy effective Hamiltonian for |ΔB|=1, ΔC=ΔU=0 transitions, the contributions of electroweak penguin operators in charmless B ^±,0→PP and PV decays are estimated in the standard model. We find that, for some channels, the electroweak penguin effects can enhance or reduce the QCD penguin and/or tree level contributions by at least 30%, and can even play a dominant role.     

Inclusive semileptonic decays of B mesons

The probability of inclusive semileptonic decay of B mesons is calculated in the constituent-quark model. A compact formula is obtained for the differential decay width of a B meson in terms of the corresponding decay width of a free b quark and the wave function of the internal motion of the quarks in the B meson. Numerical values of semileptonic-decay widths are obtained for a series of models of the wave function. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. Fiz. 65, No. 10, 734–737 (25 May 1997)     

Suppressed decays of D(s)(+) mesons to two pseudoscalar mesons

Using data collected near the D{s}{*+}D{s}{-} peak production energy E_{cm}=4170 MeV by the CLEO-c detector, we study the decays of D{s}{+} mesons to two pseudoscalar mesons. We report on searches for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed D{s}{+} decay modes K{+}eta, K{+}eta', pi{+}K{S}{0}, K{+}pi{0}, and the isospin-forbidden decay mode D{s}{+}-->pi{+}pi{0}. We normalize with respect to the Cabibbo-favored D{s}{+} modes pi{+}eta, pi{+}eta', and K{+}K{S}{0}, and obtain ratios of branching fractions: B(D{s}{+}-->K{+}eta)/B(D{s}{+}-->pi{+}eta)=(8.9+/-1.5+/-0.4)%, B(D{s}{+}-->K{+}eta')/B(D{s}{+}-->pi{+}eta')=(4.2+/-1.3+/-0.3)%, B(D{s}{+}-->pi{+}K{S}{0})/B(D{s}{+}-->K{+}K{S}{0})=(8.2+/-0.9+/-0.2)%, B(D{s}{+}-->K{+}pi{0})/B(D{s}{+}-->K{+}K{S}{0})=(5.5+/-1.3+/-0.7)%, and B(D{s}{+}-->pi{+}pi{0})/B(D{s}{+}-->K{+}K{S}{0})<4.1% at 90% C.L., where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.
