Monolayers of [Ru(bpy)2(micro-1)M2][PF6]4 salts (M = Os, Ru; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, 1 = 4'-(2,2'-bipyridin-4-yl)-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine, tpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine, and 2 = 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine) were self-assembled on platinum and investigated by fast-scan electrochemistry. The electrochemistry of the complexes in solution and confined to the surface in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) exhibited an almost ideal behavior. Scan-rate-dependent measurements of the peak current density (jp) were used to determine interaction energies within the monolayer. It is shown that the tpy coordination sites of the dinuclear complexes interact more strongly within the SAM than the bipyridine-coordinated fragments. This result was supported by peak potential shifts, which are due to interaction forces in SAMs. The alignment of the rodlike complexes relative to the surface is discussed, and the results of molecular mechanics calculations indicate that the species adopt a tilted orientation.  相似文献

Two mononuclear Ru(II) complexes, [Ru(ttbt)(pynap)(I)]I and [Ru(tpy)(Mepy)(2)(I)]I (tpy = 2,2';6,2"-terpyridine; ttbt = 4,4',4"-tri-tert-butyltpy; pynap = 2-(pyrid-2'-yl)-1,8-naphthyridine; and Mepy = 4-methylpyridine), are effective catalysts for the oxidation of water. This oxidation can be driven by a blue (λ(max) = 472 nm) LED light source using [Ru(bpy)(3)]Cl(2) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) as the photosensitizer. Sodium persulfate acts as a sacrificial electron acceptor to oxidize the photosensitizer that in turn drives the catalysis. The presence of all four components, light, photosensitizer, sodium persulfate, and catalyst, are required for water oxidation. A dyad assembly has been prepared using a pyrazine-based linker to join a photosensitizer and catalyst moiety. Irradiation of this intramolecular system with blue light produces oxygen with a higher turnover number than the analogous intermolecular component system under the same conditions.  相似文献

Aiming at highly efficient molecular catalysts for water oxidation, a mononuclear ruthenium complex Ru(II)(hqc)(pic)(3) (1; H(2)hqc = 8-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid and pic = 4-picoline) containing negatively charged carboxylate and phenolate donor groups has been designed and synthesized. As a comparison, two reference complexes, Ru(II)(pdc)(pic)(3) (2; H(2)pdc = 2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylic acid) and Ru(II)(tpy)(pic)(3) (3; tpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine), have also been prepared. All three complexes are fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry (MS), and X-ray crystallography. Complex 1 showed a high efficiency toward catalytic water oxidation either driven by chemical oxidant (Ce(IV) in a pH 1 solution) with a initial turnover number of 0.32 s(-1), which is several orders of magnitude higher than that of related mononuclear ruthenium catalysts reported in the literature, or driven by visible light in a three-component system with [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) types of photosensitizers. Electrospray ionization MS results revealed that at the Ru(III) state complex 1 undergoes ligand exchange of 4-picoline with water, forming the authentic water oxidation catalyst in situ. Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to explain how anionic ligands (hqc and pdc) facilitate the 4-picoline dissociation compared with a neutral ligand (tpy). Electrochemical measurements show that complex 1 has a much lower E(Ru(III)/Ru(II)) than that of reference complex 2 because of the introduction of a phenolate ligand. DFT was further used to study the influence of anionic ligands upon the redox properties of mononuclear aquaruthenium species, which are postulated to be involved in the catalysis cycle of water oxidation.

A series of polypyridyl ruthenium complexes of the general formula [Ru(tpy)(bpy')Cl]+ where tpy is 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine and bpy' is 4-carboxy-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine (4-CO2H-4'-Mebpy), a proline derviative (4-CO-Pra-(Boc)(OMe)-4'-Mebpy), or 4-((diethoxyphosphinyl)methyl)-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine (4-CH2PO3Et2-4'-Mebpy) are prepared. For each complex, two isomers exist, and these are separated chromatographically. The structure of the hexafluorophosphate salt of cis-[Ru(tpy)(4-CO2H-4'-Mebpy)Cl]+, cis-1, is determined by X-ray crystallography. The salt crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cc with a = 12.4778(6) A, b = 12.6086(6) A, c = 20.1215(9) A, beta = 107.08200(1) degrees, Z = 4, R = 0.058, and Rw = 0.072. The structures of the remaining complexes are assigned by 1H NMR comparisons with cis-1. The complexes are potentially important precursors for the incorporation of RuIV=O2+ oxidants into polymers or peptides or for their adsorption onto oxide surfaces. Preliminary electrochemical results for the isomers of [Ru(tpy)(4-CH2PO3H2-4'-Mebpy)(H2O)]2+, 4, adsorbed on ITO (In2O3:Sn) surfaces add support to a recently proposed electron-transfer mechanism involving cross-surface proton-coupled electron transfer.  相似文献

The binding capability of three ruthenium polypyridyl compounds of structural formula [Ru(apy)(tpy)Ln-](ClO4)(2-n) [1a-c; apy = 2,2'-azobis(pyridine), tpy = 2,2':6',2'-terpyridine, L = Cl, H2O, CH3CN] to a fragment of DNA was studied. The interaction between each of these complexes and the DNA model base 9-ethylguanine (9-EtGua) was followed by means of 1H NMR studies. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to explore the preferential ways of coordination between the ruthenium complexes and guanine. The ruthenium-9-EtGua adduct formed was isolated and fully characterized using different techniques. A variable-temperature 1H NMR experiment was carried out that showed that while the 9-EtGua fragment was rotating fast at high temperature, a loss of symmetry was suffered by the model base adduct as the temperature was lowered, indicating restricted rotation of the guanine residue.  相似文献

Compared to earlier single site catalysts, greatly enhanced rates of electrocatalytic water oxidation by the Ru carbene catalyst [Ru(tpy)(Mebim-py)(OH(2))](2+) (tpy = 2,2':6',2'-terpyridine; Mebim-py = 3-methyl-1-pyridylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene) have been observed. The mechanism appears to be the same with proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) activation to Ru(V)=O(3+) followed by O-O coupling and further oxidation. An important factor in the enhanced reactivity of the carbene complex may come from increased driving force for the O-O bond forming step.  相似文献

The catalytic activity of [Ru(tpy)(bpy)OH(2)](2+) (tpy = 2,2':6',2'-terpyridine and bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) increased by a 4'-substituted ethoxy group on the tpy ligand by more than one order of magnitude to give 1.1 × 10(-1) s(-1) of catalyst turnover frequency, which is comparable with the hitherto-reported champion data.  相似文献

Photoisomeric transformations in ruthenium polypyridyl complexes have been rarely reported. Herein we report the geometrical transformation of cyclometalated trans-[Ru(tpy)(PAD)(OH(2))](+) ([1](+)) to the cis-[Ru(tpy)(PAD)(OH(2))](+) ([1a](+)) (tpy = 2,2';6',2"-terpyridine, PAD = 2-(pyrid-2'-yl)acridine) isomer upon irradiation of visible light (λ ≥420 nm). Due to a proton-induced tautomeric equilibrium between the Ru-C bond and Ru═C coordination, the π* energy levels of PADH are lower than those of tpy by 12.61 and 12.24 kcal mol(-1), respectively, in [1](+) and [1a](+). Isomers [1](+) and [1a](+) both act as catalytic oxygen-evolving complexes (OECs) chemically as well as electrochemically.  相似文献

Although various reactions involved in photoexcited states of polypyridyl ruthenium(II) complexes have been extensively studied, photoisomerization of the complexes is very rare. We report the first illustration of stoichiometric photoisomerization of trans-[Ru(tpy)(pynp)OH(2)](2+) (1a) [tpy = 2,2':6',2'-terpyridine; pynp = 2-(2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine] to cis-[Ru(tpy)(pynp)OH(2)](2+) (1a') and the isolation of 1a and 1a' for X-ray crystallographic analysis. Polypyridyl ruthenium(II) aquo complexes are attracting much attention related to proton-coupled electron transfer and water oxidation catalysis. We demonstrate that the photoisomerization significantly controls the redox reactions and water oxidation catalyses involving the ruthenium(II) aquo complexes 1a and 1a'.  相似文献

The oxidation of water catalyzed by [Ru(tpy)(bpy)(OH(2))](ClO(4))(2) (1; tpy = 2,2';6',2'-terpyridine; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) is evaluated in different acidic media at variable oxidant concentrations. The observed rate of dioxygen evolution catalyzed by 1 is found to be highly dependent on pH and the identity of the acid; e.g., d[O(2)]/dt is progressively faster in H(2)SO(4), CF(3)SO(3)H (HOTf), HClO(4), and HNO(3), respectively. This trend does not track with thermodynamic driving force of the electron-transfer reactions between the terminal oxidant, (NH(4))(2)[Ce(NO(3))(6)] (CAN), and Ru catalyst in each of the acids. The particularly high reactivity in HNO(3) is attributed to the NO(3)(-) anion: (i) enabling relatively fast electron-transfer steps; (ii) participating in a base-assisted concerted atom-proton transfer process that circumvents the formation of high energy intermediates during the O-O bond formation process; and (iii) accelerating the liberation of dioxygen from the catalyst. Consequently, the position of the rate-determining step within the catalytic cycle can be affected by the acid medium. These factors collectively contribute to the position of the rate-determining step within the catalytic cycle being affected by the acid medium. This offering also outlines how other experimental issues (e.g., spontaneous decay of the Ce(IV) species in acidic media; CAN/catalyst molar ratio; types of catalytic probes) can affect the Ce(IV)-driven oxidation of water catalyzed by homogeneous molecular complexes.  相似文献

A series of binuclear organoplatinum(II) complexes, [(tBu3tpy)Pt--(C[triple chemical bond]C--1,2-C6H4)n--C[triple chemical bond]C--Pt(tBu3tpy)][ClO4]2 (1-7, n=1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8; tBu3tpy=4,4',4'-tri-tert-butyl-2,2':6',2'-terpyridine) with foldable oligo(ortho-phenyleneethynylene) linkers were prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods and/or X-ray crystallographic analyses. In the crystal structures of 32.5 CH3OH, 5CH3CN, and 64 CH3CN, each of the bridging ortho-phenyleneethynylene ligands has a partially folded conformation. In aerated water/acetonitrile mixtures with water percentages larger than 40 %, the emission of complexes 3-7 are red-shifted and enhanced when compared to those recorded in acetonitrile. The red-shift in emission energy and enhanced emission intensity can be attributed to the inter- and/or intramolecular interactions induced by the addition of water to solutions of the platinum(II) complexes in acetonitrile. Data from dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that these binuclear platinum(II) complexes aggregated into nanosized particles in acetonitrile/water mixtures. Hydrophobic folding of the ortho-phenyleneethynylene linkers in acetonitrile/water mixtures is postulated.  相似文献

Two classes of synthetically useful bimetallic complexes of the form [(tpy)M(tpp)RuCl(3)](PF(6)) and [(tpy)M(tpp)Ru(tpp)](PF(6))(4) have been prepared and their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties investigated (tpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, tpp = 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine, and M = Ru(II) or Os(II)). Synthetic methods have been developed for the stepwise construction of tpp-bridged systems using a building block approach. In all four complexes, the tpp that serves as the bridging ligand is the site of localization of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The nature of the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) varies depending upon the components present. In the systems of the type [(tpy)M(tpp)RuCl(3)](PF(6)), the ruthenium metal coordinated to tpp and three chlorides is the easiest to oxidize and is the site of localization of the HOMO. In contrast, for the [(tpy)M(tpp)Ru(tpp)](PF(6))(4) systems, the HOMO is based on the metal, M, that is varied, either Ru or Os. This gives rise to systems which possess a lowest lying excited state that is always a metal-to-ligand charge transfer state involving tpp but can be tuned to involve Os or Ru metal centers in a variety of coordination environments. The synthetic variation of the components within this framework has allowed for understanding the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties. Bimetallic systems incorporating this tpp ligand have long-lived excited states at room temperature (lifetimes of ca. 100 ns). The bimetallic system [(tpy)Ru(tpp)Ru(tpp)](PF(6))(4) has a longer excited state lifetime than the monometallic system from which it was constructed, [(tpy)Ru(tpp)](PF(6))(2). Details of the spectroscopic and electrochemical studies are reported herein.  相似文献

The lowest energy metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption bands found in ambient solutions of a series of [Ru(tpy)(bpy)X](m+) complexes (tpy = 2,2':3',2'-terpyridine; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; and X = a monodentate ancillary ligand) feature one or two partly resolved weak absorptions (bands I and/or II) on the low energy side of their absorption envelopes. Similar features are found for the related cyanide-bridged bi- and trimetallic complexes. However, the weak absorption band I of [(bpy)(2)Ru{CNRu(tpy)(bpy)}(2)](4+) is missing in its [(bpy)(2)Ru{NCRu(tpy)(bpy)}(2)](4+) linkage isomer demonstrating that this feature arises from a Ru(II)/tpy MLCT absorption. The energies of the MLCT band I components of the [Ru(tpy)(bpy)X](m+) complexes are proportional to the differences between the potentials for the first oxidation and the first reduction waves of the complexes. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) computational modeling indicates that these band I components correspond to the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) transition, with the HOMO being largely ruthenium-centered and the LUMO largely tpy-centered. The most intense contribution to a lowest energy MLCT absorption envelope (band III) of these complexes corresponds to the convolution of several orbitally different components, and its absorption maximum has an energy that is about 5000 cm(-1) higher than that of band I. The multimetallic complexes that contain Ru(II) centers linked by cyanide have mixed valence excited states in which more than 10% of electronic density is delocalized between the nearest neighbor ruthenium centers, and the corresponding stabilization energy contributions in the excited states are indistinguishable from those of the corresponding ground states. Single crystal X-ray structures and computational modeling indicate that the Ru-(C≡N)-Ru linkage is quite flexible and that there is not an appreciable variation in electronic structure or energy among the conformational isomers.  相似文献

The heteroleptic and homoleptic ruthenium(II) complexes of 4'-cyano-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine are synthesized by palladium catalyzed cyanation of the corresponding Ru(II) complexes of 4'-chloro-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine. The introduction of the strongly electron-withdrawing cyano group into the Ru(tpy)(2)(2+) moiety dramatically changes its photophysical and redox properties as well as prolongs its room temperature excited-state lifetime.  相似文献

The mixed-metal supramolecular complexes [(tpy)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)3 and [ClPt(tppz)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)4 (tpy = 2,2':6',2'-terpyridine and tppz = 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine) were synthesized and characterized. These complexes contain ruthenium bridged by tppz to platinum centers to form stereochemically defined linear assemblies. X-ray crystallographic determinations of the two complexes confirm the identity of the metal complexes and reveal intermolecular interactions of the Pt sites in the solid state for [(tpy)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)3 with a Pt...Pt distance of 3.3218(5) A. The (1)H NMR spectra show the expected splitting patterns characteristic of stereochemically defined mixed-metal systems and are assigned with the use of (1)H-(1)H COSY and NOESY. Electronic absorption spectroscopy displays intense ligand-based pi --> pi* transitions in the UV and MLCT transitions in the visible. Electrochemically [(tpy)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)3 and [ClPt(tppz)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)4 display reversible Ru (II/III) couples at 1.63 and 1.83 V versus Ag/AgCl, respectively. The complexes display very low potential tppz (0/-) and tppz(-/2-) couples, relative to their monometallic synthons, [(tpy)Ru(tppz)](PF6)2 and [Ru(tppz)2](PF6)2, consistent with the bridging coordination of the tppz ligand. The Ru(dpi) --> tppz(pi*) MLCT transitions are also red-shifted relative to the monometallic synthons occurring in the visible centered at 530 and 538 nm in CH3CN for [(tpy)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)3 and [ClPt(tppz)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)4, respectively. The complex [(tpy)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)3 displays a barely detectable emission from the Ru(dpi) --> tppz(pi*) (3)MLCT in CH 3CN solution at RT. In contrast, [ClPt(tppz)Ru(tppz)PtCl](PF6)4 displays an intense emission from the Ru(dpi) --> tppz(pi*) (3)MLCT state at RT with lambda max(em) = 754 nm and tau = 80 ns.  相似文献

A dimetallic biscyclometalated ruthenium complex, [(bpy)(2)Ru(dpb)Ru(bpy)(2)](2+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; dpb = 1,4-di-2-pyridylbenzene), with a tris-bidentate coordination mode has been prepared. The electronic properties of this complex were studied by electrochemical and spectroscopic analysis and DFT/TDDFT calculations on both rac and meso isomers. Complex [(bpy)(2)Ru(dpb)Ru(bpy)(2)](2+) has a similar 1,4-benzenedicyclometalated ruthenium (Ru-phenyl-Ru) structural component with a previously reported bis-tridentate complex, [(tpy)Ru(tpb)Ru(tpy)](2+) (tpy = 2,2';6',2″-terpyridine; tpb = 1,2,4,5-tetra-2-pyridylbenzene). The charge delocalizations of these complexes across the Ru-phenyl-Ru array were investigated and compared by studying the corresponding one-electron-oxidized species, generated by chemical oxidation or electrochemical electrolysis, with DFT/TDDFT calculations and spectroscopic and EPR analysis. These studies indicate that both [(bpy)(2)Ru(dpb)Ru(bpy)(2)](3+) and [(tpy)Ru(tpb)Ru(tpy)](3+) are fully delocalized systems. However, the coordination mode of the metal component plays an important role in influencing their electronic properties.  相似文献

Photocurrent measurements have been made on nanocrystalline TiO2 surfaces derivatized by adsorption of a catalyst precursor, [Ru(tpy)(bpy(PO3H2)2)(OH2)]2+, or chromophore, [Ru(bpy)2 (bpy(PO3H2)2)]2+ (tpy is 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine, bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, and bpy(PO3H2)2 is 2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-diphosphonic acid), and on surfaces containing both complexes. This is an extension of earlier work on an adsorbed assembly containing both catalyst and chromophore. The experiments were carried out with the I3-/I- or quinone/hydroquinone (Q/H2Q) relays in propylene carbonate, propylene carbonate-water mixtures, and acetonitrile-water mixtures. Electrochemical measurements show that oxidation of surface-bound Ru(III)-OH2(3+) to Ru(IV)=O(2+) is catalyzed by the bpy complex. Addition of aqueous 0.1 M HClO4 greatly decreases photocurrent efficiencies for adsorbed [Ru(tpy)(bpy(PO3H2)2)(OH2)]2+ with the I3-/I- relay, but efficiencies are enhanced for the Q/H2Q relay in both propylene carbonate-HClO4 and acetonitrile-HClO4 mixtures. The dependence of the incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) on added H2Q in 95% propylene carbonate and 5% 0.1 M HClO4 is complex and can be interpreted as changing from rate-limiting diffusion to the film at low H2Q to rate-limiting diffusion within the film at high H2Q. There is no evidence for photoelectrochemical cooperativity on mixed surfaces containing both complexes with the IPCE response reflecting the relative surface compositions of the two complexes. These results provide insight into the possible design of photoelectrochemical synthesis cells for the oxidation of organic substrates.  相似文献

The dinuclear complexes [(tpy)Ru(tppz)Ru(bpy)(L)](n+) (where L is Cl(-) or H(2)O, tpy and bpy are the terminal ligands 2,2':6',2'-terpyridine and 2,2'-bipyridine, and tppz is the bridging backbone 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(2-pyridyl)pyrazine) were prepared and structurally and electronically characterized. The mononuclear complexes [(tpy)Ru(tppz)](2+) and [(tppz)Ru(bpy)(L)](m+) were also prepared and studied for comparison. The proton-coupled, multi-electron photooxidation reactivity of the aquo dinuclear species was shown through the photocatalytic dehydrogenation of a series of primary and secondary alcohols. Under simulated solar irradiation and in the presence of a sacrificial electron acceptor, the photoactivated chromophore-catalyst complex (in aqueous solutions at room temperature and ambient pressure conditions) can perform the visible-light-driven conversion of aliphatic and benzylic alcohols into the corresponding carbonyl products (i.e., aldehydes or ketones) with 100% product selectivity and several tens of turnover cycles, as probed by NMR spectroscopy and gas chromatography. Moreover, for aliphatic substrates, the activity of the photocatalyst was found to be highly selective toward secondary alcohols, with no significant product formed from primary alcohols. Comparison of the activity of this tppz-bridged complex with that of the analogue containing a back-to-back terpyridine bridge (tpy-tpy, i.e., 6',6'-bis(2-pyridyl)-2,2':4',4':2',2'-quaterpyridine) demonstrated that the latter is a superior photocatalyst toward the oxidation of alcohols. The much stronger electronic coupling with significant delocalization across the strongly electron-accepting tppz bridge facilitates charge trapping between the chromophore and catalyst centers and therefore is presumably responsible for the decreased catalytic performance.  相似文献
