We evaluated the potential use of stable isotopes to establish linkages between the wintering grounds and the breeding grounds of the Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos), the White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis), the Baird's Sandpiper (Calidris bairdii), and other Neotropical migratory shorebird species (e.g., Tringa spp.). These species molt their flight feathers on the wintering grounds and hence their flight feathers carry chemical signatures that are characteristic of their winter habitat. The objective of our pilot study was to assess the feasibility of identifying the winter origin of individual birds by: (1) collecting shorebird flight feathers from several widely separated Argentine sites and analyzing these for a suite of stable isotopes; and 2) analyzing the deuterium and 18O isotope data that were available from precipitation measurement stations in Argentina. Isotopic ratios (delta13C, delta15N and delta34S) of flight feathers were significantly different among three widely separated sites in Argentina during January 2001. In terms of relative importance in separating the sites, delta34S was most important, followed by delta15N, and then delta13C. In the complete discriminant analysis, the classification function correctly predicted group membership in 85% of the cases (jackknifed classification matrix). In a stepwise analysis delta13C was dropped from the solution, and site membership was correctly predicted in 92% of cases (jackknifed matrix). Analysis of precipitation data showed that both deltaD and delta18O were significantly related to both latitude and longitude on a countrywide scale (p < 0.001). Other variables, month, altitude, explained little additional variation in these isotope ratios. Several issues were identified that will likely constrain the degree of accuracy one can expect in predicting the geographic origin of birds from Argentina. There was unexplained variation in isotope ratios within and among the different wing feathers from individual birds. Such variation may indicate that birds are not faithful to a local site during their winter stay in Argentina. There was significant interannual variation in the deltaD and delta18O of precipitation. Hence, specific locations may not have a constant signature for some isotopes. Moreover, the fractionation that occurs in wetlands due to evaporation significantly skews local deltaD and delta18O values, which may undermine the strong large-scale gradients seen in the precipitation data. We are continuing the research with universities in Argentina with a focus on expanding the breadth of feather collection and attempting to resolve the identified issues.  相似文献

Karst springs of the Zagros Mountains contribute a significant amount to agricultural and human water demands of western and south-western Iran. For an adequate management of available water resources in semi-arid and arid regions, sufficient hydrological monitoring is needed, and hydro-chemical and isotope hydrological data provide important additional information. About 350 water samples were collected from precipitation, river water, and karst springs of the upper part of the Karkheh River Basin (20,895 km2) located between 33°35 and 34°55 North and 46°22 and 49°10 East with elevations ranging from 928 to 3563 m above sea level. Sampling was conducted in monthly time resolution from August 2011 to July 2012. All samples were analysed for hydro-chemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, and major ions) and stable isotopes (deuterium, oxygen-18). Isotope values of precipitation indicate a local meteoric water line (Zagros MWL δ2H=6.8 δ18O+10.1; R2=0.99) situated between the Mediterranean MWL and Global MWL. Spring and river water isotope values vary between?7.1 and?4.1 ‰, and?38 and?25 ‰ for δ18O and δ2H, respectively, responding to winter snowmelt and evaporation. This work implements stable isotopes and hydro-chemical information of springs and river water to understand hydrological and hydro-geological interrelations in karstic semi-arid areas and helps to improve the current water resources management practices of western Iran.  相似文献

By using 233 isotope samples, we investigated the spatial and temporal variations of δ18O and δ2H in precipitation and surface water, and the contribution of different water sources in the rivers within the Tarim River Basin (TRB), which receives snow/glacier meltwater, groundwater, and rainfall. Our study revealed a similar seasonal pattern of precipitation δ18O and δ2H at both the north and south edges of the basin, indicating the dominant effect of westerly air masses in the summer and the combined influence of westerly and polar air masses during the winter, although the southern part showed more complex precipitation processes in the summer. River water in the basin has relatively large temporal variations in both δ18O and δ2H showing a distinct seasonal pattern with lower isotope values in May than in September. Higher d-excess values throughout the year in the Aksu river and the Tizinafu river suggest that water may be intensively recycled in the mountains of the TRB. Based on isotopic hydrograph separation, we found that groundwater is the main water source that discharges the entire basin although individual rivers vary.  相似文献

We have used the isotope dilution technique to study changes in the body composition of a migratory shorebird species (Red Knot, Calidris canutus) through an assessment of the amount of body water in it. Birds were quantitatively injected with a dose of water with elevated concentrations of 2H, (17)O, and (18)O. Thereafter, blood samples were taken and distilled. The resulting water samples were analysed using an isotope ratio mass spectrometry (for 2H and (18)O only) and a stable isotope ratio infrared laser spectrometry (2H, (17)O, and (18)O) to yield estimates of the amount of body water in the birds, which in turn could be correlated to the amount of body fat. Here, we validate laser spectrometry against mass spectrometry and show that all three isotopes may be used for body water determinations. This opens the way to the extension of the doubly labelled water method, used for the determination of energy expenditure, to a triply labelled water method, incorporating an evaporative water loss correction on a subject-by-subject basis or, alternatively, the reduction of the analytical errors by statistically combining the (17)O and (18)O measurements.  相似文献

This paper presents the stable isotope data of oxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δ2H) in groundwater from 83 sampling locations in Slovenia and their interpretation. The isotopic composition of water was monitored over 3 years (2009–2011), and each location was sampled twice. New findings on the isotopic composition of sampled groundwater are presented, and the data are also compared to past studies regarding the isotopic composition of precipitation, surface water, and groundwater in Slovenia. This study comprises: (1) the general characteristics of the isotopic composition of oxygen and hydrogen in groundwater in Slovenia, (2) the spatial distribution of oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) and d-excess in groundwater, (3) the groundwater isotope altitude effect, (4) the correlation between groundwater d-excess and the recharge area altitude of the sampling location, (5) the relation between hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in groundwater in comparison to the global precipitation isotope data, (6) the groundwater isotope effect of distance from the sea, and (7) the estimated relation between the mean temperature of recharge area and δ18O in groundwater.  相似文献

The precipitation is the input into the water system. Its stable isotope composition has to be known for the proper use and management of water resources. Croatia is not well represented in the Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) database, and the geomorphology of the country causes specific local conditions. Therefore, at the Stable Isotope Laboratory (SILab), Rijeka, we monitor the stable isotope composition (δ18O, δ2H) of precipitation. Since δ18O and δ2H are well correlated, we concentrate the discussion on the δ18O distribution. Together with GNIP, our database contains 40 stations in Croatia and in the neighbouring countries. Their different latitudes, longitudes and altitudes give information of great detail, including the influence of the topographic structure on the precipitation in the south-eastern part of Europe, as well as the complex interplay of the different climate conditions in the area. Within a few hundred kilometres, the stable isotope values display a significant change from the maritime character in the south (mean δ18O around?6 to?8%‰) to the continental behaviour in the north (mean δ18O around?8 to?11%‰). Depending on the location, the mean δ18O values vary with altitude at a rate of approximately?0.2%‰/100 m and?0.4%‰/100 m, respectively. Also the deuterium excess has been found to depend on location and altitude. The data are being used to construct a δ18O map for the entire area.  相似文献

Abstract

The stable isotope composition of hydrogen (δ2H) and oxygen (δ18O) in monthly precipitation and river water (Sava River and Danube) samples in the Belgrade area gathered between 1992 and 2005 are determined. The local meteoric water line δ2H=7.8 (±0.2) δ18O+7.3(±1.6) (r 2=0.98, n=60, σ=0.52) for the whole period of observation is close to the global meteoric water line. The amount-weighted mean δ2H and δ18O values of precipitation were?65±27 ‰ and?9.4±3.4 ‰, respectively. Good correlation between δ18O values (r>rsim0.67) and ambient temperature and relative humidity was obtained. Stream-water data ranged from?94 to?60 ‰ for δ2H and from?11.0 to ~5.7 ‰ for δ18O with highly statistically significant difference (p>0.01) between the Sava River and the Danube. In addition, the isotopic compositions of local precipitation and adjacent river water at monitoring sites were compared. Obtained data will give an opportunity to improve the knowledge of mixing stream water and local groundwater, and assessment of potential groundwater risks and pressures in the Belgrade basin.  相似文献

Western France is at the crossroads of the migratory routes of two subspecies of black-tailed godwit, Limosa limosa. After leaving Iceland, the godwit L.l. islandica Icelandic black-tailed godwit (IBTG) winters on the coast of western Europe, while the continental black-tailed godwit (CBTG) L.l. limosa can stop in France when migrating between Iberia or Africa and their main breeding grounds in the Netherlands. In this study, we analysed δ15N and δ13C from flight feathers and whole blood throughout the non-breeding period to trace variations in habitat use for both subspecies on the western French coast. Adults and juveniles of IBTG adopt the same feeding habitats as soon as they arrive in the study area, progressively losing the Icelandic freshwater habitat signal, and becoming clearly restricted to marine habitats in winter. Some individuals begin to move locally to freshwater habitats, joining CBTG in a stopover at the end of the wintering period in preparation for northward migration.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper we consider deep waters from horizons located under the Baltic-Sea bottom. The samples were taken twice from wells bored in Hel peninsula. The δ18O and δD values of these waters show their glacial origin since they have significantly low values (δ18O from ?14 to ?11 whereas the modern groundwaters in Gdańsk area have ?10%0). In contrast to surface waters the sulphates dissolved in these deep waters have rather high and uniform δ18O values which are correlated with δ18O of H2O but not correlated with δ34S. The isotope patterns may be explained assuming that the waters are very old, in which the slow process of oxygen isotope exchange at low temperatures, but extended in time, could enrich the sulphate in heavier oxygen isotopes.  相似文献

An isotopic monitoring was undertaken in 2012–2014 at Lake ?abińskie (Mazurian Lakeland, NE Poland). The aim was to identify the factors and processes controlling an isotopic composition of the lake water and to explore the mechanism responsible for recording the climatic signal in stable isotope composition of deposited carbonates. δ18O and δ2H in the precipitation, lake water column, inflows and outflow, δ18O and δ13C in the carbonate fraction of sediments trapped in the water column were recorded with monthly resolution. A relationship between δ18O and δ2H in local precipitation was used to estimate the local meteoric water line. The dataset obtained for the water enabled to identify the modification of the water’s isotopic composition due to evaporation, connected with seasonal lake water stratification and mixing patterns. Statistically significant correlation coefficients suggest that the δ18O of the carbonate fraction in the sediment traps depends on the δ18O of rainfall water and on air temperature. The fractionation coefficient α shows that in summer months the carbonate precipitation process is closest to equilibrium. As expected for an exorheic lake, no significant correlation was observed between δ18O and δ13C in precipitated carbonate.  相似文献

The Mediterranean is regarded as a region of intense climate change. To better understand future climate change, this area has been the target of several palaeoclimate studies which also studied stable isotope proxies that are directly linked to the stable isotope composition of water, such as tree rings, tooth enamel or speleothems. For such work, it is also essential to establish an isotope hydrology framework of the region of interest. Surface waters from streams and lakes as well as groundwater from springs on the island of Corsica were sampled between 2003 and 2009 for their oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions. Isotope values from lake waters were enriched in heavier isotopes and define a local evaporation line (LEL). On the other hand, stream and spring waters reflect the isotope composition of local precipitation in the catchment. The intersection of the LEL and the linear fit of the spring and stream waters reflect the mean isotope composition of the annual precipitation (δP) with values of?8.6(±0.2) ‰ for δ18O and?58(±2) ‰ for δ2H. This value is also a good indicator of the average isotope composition of the local groundwater in the island. Surface water samples reflect the altitude isotope effect with a value of?0.17(±0.02) ‰ per 100 m elevation for oxygen isotopes. At Vizzavona Pass in central Corsica, water samples from two catchments within a lateral distance of only a few hundred metres showed unexpected but systematic differences in their stable isotope composition. At this specific location, the direction of exposure seems to be an important factor. The differences were likely caused by isotopic enrichment during recharge in warm weather conditions in south-exposed valley flanks compared to the opposite, north-exposed valley flanks.  相似文献

Stable carbon and oxygen isotope analyses were conducted on pedogenic needle fibre calcite (NFC) from seven sites in areas with roughly similar temperate climates in Western Europe, including the Swiss Jura Mountains, eastern and southern France, northern Wales, and north-eastern Spain. The δ13C values (?12.5 to?6.8 ‰ Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB)) record the predominant C3 vegetation cover at the sites. A good correlation was found between mean monthly climatic parameters (air temperature, number of frost days, humidity, and precipitation) and δ18O values (?7.8 to?3.4‰ VPDB) of all the NFC. Similar seasonal variations of δ18O values for monthly NFC samples from the Swiss sites and those of mean monthly δ18O values of local precipitation and meteorological data point out precipitation and preferential growth/or recrystallisation of the pedogenic needle calcite during dry seasons. These covariations indicate the potential of stable isotope compositions of preserved NFC in fossil soil horizons as a promising tool for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.  相似文献

Abstract

Equilibration technique suitable for a large amount ofsamples is described for hydrogen and oxygen isotope analyses of ground ice, especially ice wedges, including the sampling strategy and the analytical procedure as well as the calibration of the Finnigan MAT Delta-S mass spectrometer in June, 1999. Since for future analyses of ice wedges, a higher sampling resolution with limited sample volume is required, the limit of the equliibration technique for small water samples size of between 0.05 and 5 ml was checked. For water samples smaller than 1ml, corresponding to a molar ratio [H2O]/[H2] of smaller than 0.994, a balance correction has to be applied. The experimental errors due to partial evaporation during evacuation, the balance calcultion of the isotope equilibration process, the linearity as well as memory effects of the mass spectrometer for smaples with large differences in δ18O and δD are tackled in this paper. In the polar regions of Northern Siberia without Late Pleistocene and Holocene glaciation, ground ice is used as an archive for paleoclimate studies. First results of stable isotope measurements on ice wedges clearly show a shift towards heavier isotopes and thus warmer winter temperatures as well as a change in the source of the precipitation between Late Pleistocene and Holocene. These results indicate the high potential of ground ice for paleoclimate studies.  相似文献

Abstract

Apple snails Pomacea lineata (SPIX 1827) are widespread in the tropical regions of Brazil as well as in the Pantanal wetland of Mato Grosso in the western part of the country. They have a key position in the Pantanal food web and serve as food for many animals e.g. fishes, birds, and caimans. However, little is known about their feeding preferences and growth rates. Stable isotopes have been used successfully on numerous studies as food source indicator. Therefore, the δ15N and δ13C values of snails from 0.45 to 3.03cm in length, which were collected in the rainy season from March through May, were analyzed. Snails signatures revealed ambiguous evidence for food preferences. δ15N and δ13C values ranged between ?2.8 and 12.4‰ and between ?24.2 and ?16.4‰, respectively. This range of values mirrors the highly variable isotope values of possible food sources comprising C3 and C4 macrophytes. To test whether all common food sources were similarly assimilated, feeding experiments with different diets were conducted. Snail eggs were reared in tanks and offered different but single plants. Snails fed different diets and δ13C values of the food were reflected in the animal tissue. Growth varied considerably in experiments with different diets indicating the preference for certain food sources. Also, the fractionation of nitrogen isotopes between food and animal varied from 0.1 to 17.0‰. The results are explained by different feeding habits, and it is supposed that animals fed either on the plant itself or on bacteria mats growing in the tanks. In an additional experiment juvenile snails were offered one single food with a distinctive C4 grass signature. These snails did not grow detectably, but nevertheless isotope signatures approached to values of the diet.  相似文献

Secondary carbonate precipitates (dripstones) formed on concrete surfaces in four different environments – Mediterranean and continental open-space and indoor environments (inside a building and in a karstic cave) – were studied. The fabric of dripstones depends upon water supply, pH of mother solution and carbonate-resulting precipitation rate. Very low δ13C (average?28.2‰) and δ18O (average?18.4‰) values showed a strong positive correlation, typical for carbonate precipitated by rapid dissolution of CO2 in a highly alkaline solution and consequent disequilibrium precipitation of CaCO3. The main source of carbon is atmospheric or biogenic CO2 in the poorly ventilated karstic cave, which is reflected in even lower δ13C values. Statistical analysis of δ13C and δ18O values of the four groups of samples showed that the governing factor of isotope fractionation is not the temperature, but rather the precipitation rate.  相似文献

The Tanour spring is one of the several karst springs located in the northern part of Jordan. Water samples from the Tanour spring and precipitation were collected in the area of Ajloun in NW Jordan for the analysis of stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes to evaluate the spring response to precipitation events. Rainwater and snow samples were collected from different elevations during winters of 2013–2014 and 2014–2015. In addition, spring samples were collected between December 2014 and March 2015. δ18O values in rainwater vary from ?3.26 to ?17.34?‰ (average: ?7.84?±?3.23?‰), while δ2H values range between ?4.4 and ?110.4?‰ (average: ?35.7?±?25.0?‰). Deuterium excess ranges from 17.8 to 34.1?‰ (average: 27.1?±?4.0?‰). The Local Meteoric Water Line for the study area was calculated to be δ2H?=?7.66*δ18O?+?24.43 (R2?=?0.98). Pre-event spring discharge showed variation in δ18O (range ?6.29 to ?7.17?‰; average ?6.58?±?0.19?‰) and δ2H values (range ?28.8 to ?32.7?‰; average: ?30.5?±?1.0?‰). In contrast, δ18O and δ2H rapidly changed to more negative values during rainfall and snowmelt events and persisted for several days before returning to background values. Spring water temperature, spring discharge, and turbidity followed the trend in isotopic composition during and after the precipitation events. The rapid change in the isotopic composition, spring discharge, water temperature, and turbidity in response to recharge events is related to fast water travel times and low storage capacity in the conduit system of the karst aquifer. Based on the changes in the isotopic composition of spring water after the precipitation events, the water travel time in the aquifer is in the order of 5–11 days.  相似文献

We used pore water samplers (PWS) to sample for isotope analysis (1) only water, (2) soil under laboratory conditions, and (3) soil in the field comparing the results with cryogenic extraction (CE). In (1) and (2), no significant differences between source and water extracted with PWS were detected with a mean absolute difference (MAD) always lower than 2?‰ for δ2H and 1?‰ for δ18O. In (2), CE water was more enriched than PWS-extracted water, with a MAD respect to source water of roughly 8?‰ for δ2H and 4?‰ for δ18O. In (3), PWS water was enriched relative to CE water by 3?‰ for δ2H and 0.9?‰ for δ18O. The latter result may be due to the distinct water portions sampled by the two methods. Large pores, easily sampled by PWS, likely retain recent, and enriched, summer precipitation while small pores, only sampled by CE, possibly retain isotopically depleted water from previous winter precipitation or irrigation inputs. Accuracy and precision were greater for PWS relative to CE. PWS is therefore suggested as viable tool to extract soil water for stable isotope analysis, particularly for soils used in this study (sandy and silty loams).  相似文献

When a diet switch results in a change in dietary isotopic values, isotope ratios of the consumer's tissues will change until a new equilibrium is reached. This change is generally best described by an exponential decay curve. Indeed, after a diet switch in captive red knot shorebirds (Calidris canutus islandica), the depletion of 13C in both blood cells and plasma followed an exponential decay curve. Surprisingly, the diet switch with a dietary 15N/14N ratio (δ15N) change from 11.4 to 8.8 ‰ had little effect on δ15N in the same tissues. The diet-plasma and diet-cellular discrimination factors of 15N with the initial diet were very low (0.5 and 0.2 ‰, respectively). δ15N in blood cells and plasma decreased linearly with increasing body mass, explaining about 40 % of the variation in δ15N. δ15N in plasma also decreased with increasing body-mass change (r 2=.07). This suggests that the unusual variation in δ15N with time after the diet switch was due to interferences with simultaneous changes in body-protein turnover.  相似文献

Abstract

Much uncertainty still exists regarding spatial and temporal variability of stable isotope ratios (13C/12C and D/H) in different CH4-emission sources. Such variability is especially prevalent in freshwater wetlands where a range of processes can influence stable isotope compositions, resulting in variations of up to ~50‰ for δ13C-CH4 and ~150‰ for δD-CH4 values. Within a temperate-zone bog and marsh situated in southwestern Ontario, Canada, gas bubbles in pond sediments exhibit only minor seasonal and spatial variation in δ13C-CH4, δD-CH4 and δ13C-CO2 values. In pond sediments, CO2 appears to be the main source of carbon during methanogenesis either directly via CO2 reduction or indirectly through dissimilation of autotrophic acetate. In contrast, CH4 production occurs primarily via acetate fermentation at shallow depths in peat soils adjacent to ponds at each wetland. At greater depths within soils, σCO2 and H2O increasingly exert an influence on δ13C- and δD-CH4 values. Secondary alteration processes (e.g., methanotrophy or diffusive transport) are unlikely to be responsible for depth-related changes in stable isotope values of CH4. Recent models that attempt to predict δD-CH4 values in freshwater environments from D/H ratios in local precipitation do not adequately account for such changes with depth. Subenvironments (i.e., soil-forming and open water areas) in wetlands should be considered separately with respect to stable isotope signatures in CH4 emission models.  相似文献

We used stable isotope ratios to determine the metabolic routing fraction of carbon and nitrogen in feathers in addition to faecal analysis to estimate diet overlap of six sympatric species of manakins in the eastern lowland forest of Ecuador. Collectively, all species varied from?23.7 to?32.7 ‰ for δ13C, and from 6.0 to 9.9‰ for δ15N, with Machaeropterus regulus showing isotopic differences from the other species. We developed a mixing model that explicitly addresses the routing of carbon and nitrogen to feathers. Interestingly, these results suggest a higher proportion of nitrogen and carbon derived from insects than anticipated based on feeding observations and faecal analysis. A concentration-dependent mixing isotopic model was also used to look at dietary proportions. While larvae and arachnids had higher δ15N values, these two groups may also be preferred prey of manakins and may be more assimilated into tissues, leading to a potential overestimation of the contribution to diet. This study supports the finding that manakin species, previously thought be primarily frugivorous, contain a significant amount of arthropods in their diet.  相似文献
