This article presents a nonlinear stability analysis of a rotating thermoconvective magnetized ferrofluid layer confined between stress-free boundaries using a thermal non-equilibrium model by the energy method. The effect of interface heat transfer coefficient ( H){( {{\mathcal H}^{\prime}})}, magnetic parameter (M 3), Darcy–Brinkman number ( [^(D)]a){( {\hat{{\rm D}}{\rm a}})}, and porosity modified conductivity ratio (γ′) on the onset of convection in the presence of rotation (TA1){({T_{{\rm A}_1}})} have been analyzed. The critical Rayleigh numbers predicted by energy method are smaller than those calculated by linear stability analysis and thus indicate the possibility of existence of subcritical instability region for ferrofluids. However, for non-ferrofluids stability and instability boundaries coincide. Asymptotic analysis for both small and large values of interface heat transfer coefficient (H){({{\mathcal H}^{\prime}})} is also presented. A good agreement is found between the exact solutions and asymptotic solutions.  相似文献

The effect of internal heat source on convection in a layer of fluid in a porous medium was analyzed using linear and nonlinear analysis, and boundaries are assumed to be stress-free and isothermal. Normal mode technique is used for linear analysis, and energy method is used for nonlinear stability analysis. The presence of heat generation leads to the possibility of the existence of a subcritical instability. Effects of increase of Darcy–Brinkman number and internal heat parameter on critical Rayleigh numbers were analyzed numerically using Chebyshev pseudospectral method.  相似文献

We study the magnetic Bénard problem with the Lyapunov direct method and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions of conditional nonlinear stability. By introducing a suitable change of fields and a generalized energy functional, we show that, whenever the magnetic Prandtl number is less than the usual Prandtl number, the critical linear and nonlinear stability Rayleigh numbers coincide for any Chandrasekhar number. Linear and nonlinear stability analyses were performed on a fluid layer with a concentration-based internal heat source. Clear bimodal behaviour in the neutral curve (with stationary and oscillatory modes) is observed in the region of the onset of oscillatory convection, which is a previously unobserved phenomenon in radiation-induced convection. The numerical results for the linear instability analysis suggest a critical value γ c of γ, a measure for the strength of the internal heat source, for which oscillatory convection is inhibited when γ > γ c . Linear instability analyses on the effect of varying the ratio of the salt concentrations at the upper and lower boundaries conclude that the ratio has a significant effect on the stability boundary. A nonlinear analysis using an energy approach confirms that the linear theory describes the stability boundary most accurately when γ is such that the linear theory predicts the onset of mostly stationary convection. Nevertheless, the agreement between the linear and nonlinear stability thresholds deteriorates for larger values of the solute Rayleigh number for any value of γ.  相似文献

A model for convection due to the selective absorption of radiation in a fluid saturated porous medium is investigated. The model is based on a similar one introduced for a viscous fluid by Krishnamurti [x]. Employing this adapted model we show the growth rate for the linearised system is real. A linear instability analysis is performed. Global stability thresholds are also found using nonlinear energy theory. An excellent agreement is found between the linear instability and nonlinear stability Rayleigh numbers, so that the region of potential subcritical instabilities is very small, demonstrating that the linear theory accurately emulates the physics of the onset of convectionReceived: 10 February 2003, Accepted: 11 March 2003, Published online: 12 September 2003  相似文献

The triple-diffusive convection in a micropolar ferromagnetic fluid layer heated and soluted from below is considered in the presence of a transverse uniform magnetic field. An exact solution is obtained for a flat fluid layer contained between two free boundaries. A linear stability analysis and a normal mode analysis method are carried out to study the onset convection. For stationary convection, various parameters such as the medium permeability, the solute gradients, the non-buoyancy magnetization, and the micropolar parameters (i.e., the coupling parameter, the spin diffusion parameter, and the micropolar heat conduction parameter) are analyzed. The critical magnetic thermal Rayleigh number for the onset of instability is determined numerically for a sufficiently large value of the buoyancy magnetization parameter M 1. The principle of exchange of stabilities is found to be true for the micropolar fluid heated from below in the absence of the micropolar viscous effect, the microinertia, and the solute gradients. The micropolar viscous effect, the microinertia, and the solute gradient introduce oscillatory modes, which are non-existent in their absence. Sufficient conditions for the non-existence of overstability are also obtained.  相似文献

The effect of magnetic field dependent viscosity on thermosolutal convection in a ferromagnetic fluid saturating a porous medium is considered for a fluid layer heated and soluted from below in the presence of uniform magnetic field. Using linearized stability theory and normal mode analysis, an exact solution is obtained for the case of two free boundaries. For case of stationary convection, medium permeability has a destabilizing effect, whereas a stable solute gradient and magnetic field dependent viscosity have a stabilizing effect on the system. In the absence of magnetic field dependent viscosity, the destabilizing effect of non-buoyancy magnetization is depicted but in the presence of magnetic field dependent viscosity non-buoyancy magnetization may have a destabilizing or stabilizing effect on the onset of instability. The critical wave number and the critical magnetic thermal Rayleigh number for the onset of instability are also determined numerically for sufficiently large values of buoyancy magnetization parameter M1 and the results are depicted graphically. The principle of exchange of stabilities is found to hold true for the ferromagnetic fluid saturating a porous medium heated from below in the absence of stable solute gradient. The oscillatory modes are introduced due to the presence of the stable solute gradient, which were non-existent in its absence. A sufficient condition for the non-existence of overstability is also obtained. The paper also reaffirms the qualitative findings of earlier investigations which are, in fact, limiting cases of the present study.  相似文献

Convection induced by the selective absorption of radiation in a porous medium is studied analytically and numerically using the Brinkman model. Both linear instability analysis and nonlinear stability analysis are employed. The thresholds show excellent agreement so that the region of potential subcritical instabilities is very small, demonstrating that linear theory is accurate enough to predict the onset of convective motion. A surprising result shows that the critical Rayleigh number increases linearly as (Darcy number x Brinkman coefficient / dynamic viscosity of the fluid) increases.Received: 6 May 2003, Accepted: 26 May 2003  相似文献

In this second part of our analysis of the destabilization of transverse modes in an extended horizontal layer of a saturated porous medium with inclined temperature gradient and vertical throughflow, we apply the mathematical formalism of absolute and convective instabilities to studying the nature of the transition to instability of such modes by assuming on physical grounds that the transition is triggered by growing localized wavepackets. It is revealed that in most of the parameter cases treated in the first part of the analysis (Brevdo and Ruderman 2009), at the transition point the evolving instability is convective. Only in the cases of zero horizontal thermal gradient, and in the cases of zero vertical throughflow and the horizontal Rayleigh number R h < 49, the instability is absolute implying that, as the vertical Rayleigh number, R v, increases passing through its critical value, R vc, the destabilization tends to affect the base state throughout and eventually destroys it at every point in space. For the parameter values considered, for which the destabilization has the nature of convective instability, we found that, as R v, increases beyond the critical value, while the horizontal Rayleigh number, R h, and the Péclet number, Q v, are kept fixed, the flow experiences a transition from convective to absolute instability. The values of the vertical Rayleigh number, R v, at the transition from convective to absolute instability are computed. For convectively unstable, but absolutely stable cases, the spatially amplifying responses to localized oscillatory perturbations, i.e., signaling, are treated and it is found that the amplification is always in the direction of the applied horizontal thermal gradient.  相似文献

The problem of penetrative convection in a fluid saturated porous medium heated internally is analysed. The linear instability theory and nonlinear energy theory are derived and then tested using three dimensions simulation.Critical Rayleigh numbers are obtained numerically for the case of a uniform heat source in a layer with two fixed surfaces. The validity of both the linear instability and global nonlinear energy stability thresholds are tested using a three dimensional simulation. Our results show that the linear threshold accurately predicts the onset of instability in the basic steady state. However, the required time to arrive at the basic steady state increases significantly as the Rayleigh number tends to the linear threshold.  相似文献

This article theoretically studies the Bénard-Marangoni instability problem for a liquid layer with a free upper surface, which is heated from below by a heating coil through a solid plate in ana.c. electric field. The boundary effects of the solid plate, which include its thermal conductivity, electric conductivity and thickness, have great influences on the onset of convective instability in the liquid layer. The stability analysis in this study is based on the linear stability theory. The eigenvalue equations obtained from the analysis are solved by using the fourth order Runge-Kutta-Gill's method with the shooting technique. The results indicate that the solid plate with a higher thermal or electric conductivity and a bigger thickness tends to stabilize the system. It is also found that the critical Rayleigh numberR c, the critical Marangoni numberM c, and the criticala.c. Rayleigh numberE ac become smaller as the intensity of thea.c. electric field increases.  相似文献

Both linear and weakly nonlinear stability analyses are performed to study thermal convection in a rotating couple-stress fluid-saturated rigid porous layer. In the case of linear stability analysis, conditions for the occurrence of possible bifurcations are obtained. It is shown that Hopf bifurcation is possible due to Coriolis force, and it occurs at a lower value of the Rayleigh number at which the simple bifurcation occurs. In contrast to the nonrotating case, it is found that the couple-stress parameter plays a dual role in deciding the stability characteristics of the system, depending on the strength of rotation. Nonlinear stability analysis is carried out by constructing a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations using truncated representation of Fourier series. Sub-critical finite amplitude steady motions occur depending on the choice of physical parameters but at higher rotation rates oscillatory convection is found to be the preferred mode of instability. Besides, the stability of steady bifurcating equilibrium solution is discussed using modified perturbation theory. Heat transfer is calculated in terms of Nusselt number. Also, the transient behavior of the Nusselt number is investigated by solving the nonlinear differential equations numerically using the Runge–Kutta–Gill method. It is noted that increase in the value of Taylor number and the couple-stress parameter is to dampen the oscillations of Nusselt number and thereby to decrease the heat transfer.  相似文献

Thermal instability in an electrically conducting two component Boussinesq fluid-saturated-porous medium has been investigated, in the presence of Soret coefficient. The porous medium is confined between two horizontal surfaces, and subjected to a constant vertical magnetic field. Flow in the porous medium is characterized by generalized Darcy model, which includes the time derivative term. Performing linear and non-linear stability analysis, the effect of magnetic field on the stability of flow through porous medium has been investigated. The normal mode method is used in linear stability analysis, while a weak non-linear analysis based on a minimal representation of double Fourier series method is used in non-linear analysis. The critical Rayleigh number, wave number for stationary and oscillatory modes, and frequency of oscillations are obtained analytically using linear theory. Effects of various parameters on stationary, oscillatory and finite amplitude convection, rate of heat and mass transfer have been obtained analytically and presented graphically.  相似文献

The stability of a triply diffusive fluid-saturated porous layer is investigated. A linear stability analysis similar to that of Pearlstein et al [1] is presented. This allows us to make a thorough investigation of the topology of the neutral curves. For some values of the thermal and solute diffusivities we obtain highly unusual neutral curves, in particular a heart-shaped, disconnected oscillatory curve. The effect of this is that three critical Rayleigh numbers are required to fully specify the linear stability criteria, a novel result in porous convection. The influence of nonlinear terms is likely to have important consequences for the experimental realisation of the linear results and so we investigate the nonlinear stability of the problem by making use of the energy method. This provides an unconditional nonlinear stability boundary and enables us to identify possible regions of subcritical instability. Received: April 4, 1996  相似文献

In this paper, a linear stability analysis is presented to trace the time evolution of an infinitesimal, two-dimensional disturbance imposed on the base flow of an electrically conducting fluid in a channel filled with a saturated porous medium under the influence of a transversely imposed magnetic field. An eigenvalue problem is obtained and solved numerically using the Chebyshev collocation spectral method. The critical Reynolds number Re c, the critical wave number α c and the critical wave speed c c are obtained for a wide range of the porous medium shape factor parameter S and Hartmann number H. It is found that an increase in the magnetic field intensity and a decrease in porous medium permeability have a stabilizing effect on the fluid flow.  相似文献

The effect of a uniform electromagnetic field on the stability of a thin layer of an electrically conducting viscoelastic liquid flowing down on a nonconducting inclined plane is studied under the induction-free approximation. Long-wave expansion method is used to obtain the surface evolution equation. The stabilizing role of the magnetic parameter M and the destabilizing role of the viscoelastic parameter Γ as well as the electric parameter E on this flow field are established. A novel result which emerges from our analysis is that the stabilizing effect of M holds no longer true for both viscous and viscoelastic fluids in the presence of electromagnetic field. It is found that when E exceeds a certain critical value depending on Γ, magnetic field exhibits the destabilizing effect on this flow field. Indeed, this critical value decreases with the increase of the viscoelastic parameter Γ since it has a destabilizing effect inherently. Another noteworthy result which arises from the weakly nonlinear stability analysis is that both the subcritical unstable and supercritical stable zones are possible together with the unconditional stable and explosive zones for different values of Γ depending on the wave number k.  相似文献

The combined effect of a vertical AC electric field and the boundaries on the onset of Darcy–Brinkman convection in a dielectric fluid saturated porous layer heated either from below or above is investigated using linear stability theory. The isothermal bounding surfaces of the porous layer are considered to be either rigid or free. It is established that the principle of exchange of stability is valid irrespective of the nature of velocity boundary conditions. The eigenvalue problem is solved exactly for free–free (F/F) boundaries and numerically using the Galerkin technique for rigid–rigid (R/R) and lower-rigid and upper-free (F/R) boundaries. It is observed that all the boundaries exhibit qualitatively similar results. The presence of electric field is emphasized on the stability of the system and it is shown that increasing the AC electric Rayleigh number R ea is to facilitate the transfer of heat more effectively and to hasten the onset of Darcy–Brinkman convection. Whereas, increase in the ratio of viscosities Λ and the inverse Darcy number Da −1 is to delay the onset of Darcy–Brinkman electroconvection. Besides, increasing R ea and Da −1 as well as decreasing Λ are to reduce the size of convection cells.  相似文献

Stability analysis of double-diffusive convection for viscoelastic fluid with Soret effect in a porous medium is investigated using a modified-Maxwell-Darcy model. We use the linear stability analysis to investigate how the Soret parameter and the relaxation time of viscoelastic fluid effect the onset of convection and the selection of an unstable wavenumber. It is found that the Soret effect is to destabilize the system for oscillatory convection. The relaxation time also enhances the instability of the system. The effects of Soret coefficient and relaxation time on the heat transfer rate in a porous medium are studied using the nonlinear stability analysis, the variation of the Nusselt number with respect to the Rayleigh number is derived for stationary and oscillatory convection modes. Some previous results can be reduced as the special cases of the present paper.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical study of magnetic effect on the formation of longitudinal vortices in a rotating laminar boundary layer. The criterion for the position marking the onset of longitudinal vortices is defined in this paper. The onset position characterized by the rotational Goertler number Gδ,rot, depends on the local rotation number, Reynolds number, the magnetic field parameter, the Prandtl number and the wave number. The results show that positive rotation destabilizes the flow. The flow is found to become more unstable to the vortex mode of instability as the value of magnetic field parameter M increases. The numerical data shows good agreement with the experimental results. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
