Achieving organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in a solvent-free liquid state is a challenging task because the liquid state provides a less rigid environment than the crystal. Here, we report that an unsymmetrical heteroaromatic 1,2-diketone forms an organic RTP liquid. This diketone exists as a kinetically stable supercooled liquid, which resists crystallisation even under pricking or shearing stresses, and remains as a liquid for several months. The unsymmetrical diketone core is flexible, with eight distinct conformers possible, which prevents nucleation and growth for the liquid–solid transition. Interestingly, the thermodynamically stable crystalline solid-state was non-emissive. Thus, the RTP of the diketone was found to be liquiefaction-induced. Single-crystal X-ray structure analysis revealed that the diminished RTP of the crystal is due to insufficient intermolecular interactions and restricted access to an emissive conformer. Our work demonstrates that flexible unsymmetrical skeletons are promising motifs for bistable liquid–solid molecular systems, which are useful for the further development of stimuli-responsive materials that use phase transitions.

Metal-free, single-component, unsymmetrical 1,2-diketone exhibits liquefaction-induced room-temperature phosphorescence. Desymmetrisation provides the supercooled liquid with notable kinetic stability and phase-dependent phosphorescence properties.  相似文献

Multivalent supramolecular assemblies have recently attracted extensive attention in the applications of soft materials and cell imaging. Here, we report a novel multivalent supramolecular assembly constructed from 4-(4-bromophenyl)pyridine-1-ium bromide modified hyaluronic acid (HABr), cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and laponite® clay (LP), which could emit purely organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with a phosphorescence lifetime of up to 4.79 ms in aqueous solution via multivalent supramolecular interactions. By doping the organic dyes rhodamine B (RhB) or sulfonated rhodamine 101 (SR101) into the HABr/CB[8]/LP assembly, phosphorescence energy transfer was realized with high transfer efficiency (energy transfer efficiency = 73–80%) and ultrahigh antenna effect (antenna effect value = 308–362) within the phosphorescent light harvesting system. Moreover, owing to the dynamic nature of the noncovalent interactions, a wide-range spectrum of phosphorescence energy transfer outputs could be obtained not only in water but also on filter paper and a glass plate by adjusting the donor–acceptor ratio and, importantly, white-light emission was obtained, which could be used in the application of information encryption.

An ultralong lifetime supramolecular assembly was constructed via multivalent supramolecular interactions and achieved phosphorescence light harvesting. Multicolor (including white) broad-spectrum outputs could be achieved in water and also on filter paper and a glass plate.  相似文献

Mechanically responsive organic luminescent crystals are one of the promising choices of materials for flexible photonic devices. However, the change in phosphorescence emission as a function of the flexibility of a crystal has never been reported. Our current findings demonstrate two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) macroscopic elastic deformability, under mechanical stress, in elastically flexible single crystals of dibenzothiophene, and its brominated derivative, respectively. Unlike the presence of dual fluorescence (FL) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in dibenzothiophene single crystals, the derivative was found to show only RTP. Interestingly, upon elastic deformation, single crystals of the dual emissive dibenzothiophene show a noticeable blue shift (∼20 nm) of RTP emission when compared to their pristine crystals (straight and naturally bent). However, their FL peaks remain nearly unchanged irrespective of the crystal deformation. A hierarchy of structure-elastic functionality to RTP modulation has been quantitatively mapped by rationalizing the role of chalcogen-involved weak interactions.

In response to macroscopic elastical bending, single crystals of dual emissive dibenzothiophene depict a significant blue shift (∼20 nm) of RTP emission when compared to their pristine crystals (straight and naturally bent).  相似文献

Pure organic, heavy‐atom‐free room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted much attention and have potential applications in photoelectric and biochemical material fields owing to their rich excited state properties. They offer long luminescent lifetime, diversified design, and facile preparation. However, recent achievements of efficient phosphorescence under ambient conditions mainly focus on ordered crystal lattices or embedding into rigid matrices, which require strict growth conditions and have poor reproducibility. Herein, we developed a concise approach to give RTP with a decent quantum yield and ultralong phosphorescence lifetime in the amorphous state by radical binary copolymerization of acrylamide and different phosphors with oxygen‐containing functional groups. The cross‐linked hydrogen‐bonding networks between the polymeric chains immobilize phosphors to suppress non‐radiative transitions and provide a microenvironment to shield quenchers.  相似文献

The influence of 1H-benzo[f]indole (Bd) and its derivatives on room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has raised great concern since they were found to significantly affect RTP of the extensively studied carbazole (Cz) derivatives. However, the role of Bd itself existing in Cz-based or other doping systems was still unclear. In order to clarify its intrinsic phosphorescent property, Bd was introduced as a guest into different organic matrixes including substituted Cz derivatives and polymers. The phosphorescence located in 560–620 nm was confirmed to be derived from Bd itself, which can be detected whatever Bd was doped in the crystal or amorphous state of Cz derivatives. The suitable energy gap between Cz derivatives and Bd is the key to achieve ultralong RTP of Bd. Additionally, when doped in polymers with plenty of hydrogen bonds, RTP of Bd with lifetime over 280 ms was easily obtained. Among them, Bd@PHEMA (poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) exhibited superior phosphorescence, with yellow afterglow lasting for over 2.5 s. Therefore, this work demonstrated that a new organic RTP phosphor, Bd, is discovered, and ultralong RTP of Bd can be achieved not only doped in Cz derivatives but also in polymers as the hosts.  相似文献

Molecular dimers have been frequently found to play an important role in room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), but its inherent working mechanism has remained unclear. Herein a series of unique characteristics, including singlet excimer emission and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, were successfully integrated into a new RTP luminogen of CS-2COOCH3 to clearly reveal the excited-state process of RTP and the special role of molecular dimers in persistent RTP emission.

The first purely organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) luminogen, with singlet excimer emission and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) effect, was successfully developed.   相似文献

Development of purely organic materials displaying room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) will expand the toolbox of inorganic phosphors for imaging, sensing or display applications. While molecular solids were found to suppress non-radiative energy dissipation and make the RTP process kinetically favourable, such an effect should be enhanced by the presence of multivalent directional non-covalent interactions. Here we report phosphorescence of a series of fast triplet-forming tetraethyl naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylates. Various numbers of bromo substituents were introduced to modulate intermolecular halogen-bonding interactions. Bright RTP with quantum yields up to 20% was observed when the molecule is surrounded by a Br⋯O halogen-bonded network. Spectroscopic and computational analyses revealed that judicious heavy-atom positioning suppresses non-radiative relaxation and enhances intersystem crossing at the same time. The latter effect was found to be facilitated by the orbital angular momentum change, in addition to the conventional heavy-atom effect. Our results suggest the potential of multivalent non-covalent interactions for excited-state conformation and electronic control.

The number and position of halogen substituents in purely organic π–π* chromophores critically affect the efficiency of phosphorescence.  相似文献

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with high efficiency have attracted much attention because they have unique characteristics that cannot be realized in conventional fluorescent materials. Unfortunately, efficient RTP in metal-free organic materials is very rare and it has traditionally been considered as the feature to divide purely organic compounds from organometallic and inorganic compounds. There has been increasing research interest in the design and preparation of metal-free organic RTP materials in recent years. It has been reported that intermolecular interactions make a big difference to the photophysical behavior of organic molecules. In this regard, herein, the parameters that affect RTP efficiency are discussed, and a brief review of recent intermolecular halogen-/hydrogen-bonding strategies for efficient RTP in metal-free organic materials are provided. The opportunities and challenges are finally elaborated in the hope of guiding promising directions for the design and application of RTP materials.  相似文献

Information security of photonic communications has become an important societal issue and can be greatly improved when photonic signals are propagated through active waveguides with tunable wavelengths in different time and space domains. Moreover, the development of active waveguides that can work efficiently at extreme temperatures is highly desirable but remains a challenge. Herein, we report new types of low-dimensional Zn(ii)–organic halide microcrystals with fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) dual emission for use as 1D color-tunable active waveguides. Benefiting from strong intermolecular interactions (i.e., hydrogen bonds and π–π interactions), these robust waveguide systems exhibit colorful photonic signals and structural stability at a wide range of extreme simulated temperatures (>300 K), that covers natural conditions on Earth, Mars, and the Moon. Both experimental and theoretical studies demonstrate that the molecular self-assembly can regulate the singlet and triplet excitons to allow thermally assisted spectral separation of fluorescence and RTP, in combination with the single-component standard white-light emission. Therefore, this work demonstrates the first use of metal–organic halide microcrystals as temperature-gating active waveguides with promising implications for high-security information communications and high-resolution micro/nanophotonics.

In recent years, pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with highly efficient and long-persistent afterglow has drawn substantial awareness. Commonly, spin-orbit coupling can be improved by introducing heavy atoms into pure-organic molecules. However, this strategy will simultaneously increase the radiative and non-radiative transition rate, further resulting in dramatic decreases in the excited state lifetime and afterglow duration. Here in this work, a highly symmetric bird-like structure tetraphenylene (TeP), and its three symmetrical halogenated derivatives (TeP−F, TeP−Cl and TeP−Br) are synthesized, while their RTP properties and mechanisms are systematically investigated by both theoretical and experimental approaches. As the results, the rigid, highly twisted conformation of TeP restricts the non-radiative processes of RTP and gives rise to the enhancement of electron-exchange, which can contribute to the RTP radiation process. Despite the faint RTP of the bromine and chlorine-substituted ones (TeP−Br, TeP−Cl), the fluoro-substituted TeP−F exhibited a long phosphorescent lifetime up to 890 ms, corresponding to an extremely long RTP afterglow over 8 s, which could be incorporated into the best series of non-heavy-atom RTP materials reported in previous literature.  相似文献

The controlled synthesis of biphenyls, which play a prominent role in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and liquid crystals, typically requires hazardous organometallic reagents, aryl halides, and heavy metal catalysts. We recently reported a metal-free, photochemical alternative (“photosplicing”) for the selective preparation of a wide range of pharmaceutically important biphenyls. Whereas the traceless sulfonamide linker enables and controls the aryl coupling, unwanted toxic byproducts are released. Therefore, we designed over 25 different temporary linkers and tested them for their suitability for the photosplicing reaction in a flow reactor. We found that a surprisingly high number of functional groups enable light-induced aryl fusion and identified a number of linkers for environmentally friendly procedures. We also report that a thiol-ene (click) – photosplicing sequence enables a convenient route to biaryls such as liquid crystals. This work sheds light on thus far neglected photochemistry of temporary linkers, reduces toxic byproducts, and expands the available starting materials for metal-free biphenyl synthesis.

A series of photoactivatable linkers for metal-free biphenyl synthesis is presented. Alternative substrates for the photosplicing reaction can reduce toxic byproducts and problematic starting materials.  相似文献

Pure organic materials with intrinsic room‐temperature phosphorescence typically rely on heavy atoms or heteroatoms. Two different strategies towards constructing organic room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) species based upon the through‐space charge transfer (TSCT) unit of [2.2]paracyclophane (PCP) were demonstrated. Materials with bromine atoms, PCP‐BrCz and PPCP‐BrCz, exhibit RTP lifetime of around 100 ms. Modulating the PCP core with non‐halogen‐containing electron‐withdrawing units, PCP‐TNTCz and PCP‐PyCNCz, successfully elongate the RTP lifetime to 313.59 and 528.00 ms, respectively, the afterglow of which is visible for several seconds under ambient conditions. The PCP‐TNTCz and PCP‐PyCNCz enantiomers display excellent circular polarized luminescence with dissymmetry factors as high as ?1.2×10?2 in toluene solutions, and decent RTP lifetime of around 300 ms for PCP‐TNTCz enantiomers in crystalline state.  相似文献

Sulfur oxidation state is used to tune organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of symmetric sulfur-bridged carbazole dimers. The sulfide-bridged compound exhibits a factor of 3 enhancement of the phosphorescence efficiency, compared to the sulfoxide and sulfone-bridged analogs, despite sulfone bridges being commonly used in RTP materials. In order to investigate the origin of this enhancement, temperature dependent spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations are used. The RTP lifetimes are similar due to similar crystal packing modes. Computational studies reveal that the lone pairs on the sulfur atom have a profound impact on enhancing intersystem crossing rate through orbital mixing and screening, which we hypothesize is the dominant factor responsible for increasing the phosphorescence efficiency. The ability to tune the electronic state without altering crystal packing modes allows the isolation of these effects. This work provides a new perspective on the design principles of organic phosphorescent materials, going beyond the rules established for conjugated ketone/sulfone-based organic molecules.

Purely organic room temperature phosphorescence, especially in aqueous solution, is attracting increasing attention owing to its large Stokes shift, long lifetime, low preparation cost, low toxicity, good processing performance advantages, and broad application value. This review mainly focuses on macrocyclic (cyclodextrin and cucurbituril) hosts, nanoassembly, and macromolecule (polyether) confinement-driven RTP. As an optical probe, the assembly and the two-stage assembly strategy can realize the confined purely organic RTP and achieve energy transfer and light-harvesting from fluorescence to delayed fluorescence or phosphorescence. This supramolecular assembly is widely applied for luminescent materials, cell imaging, and other fields because it effectively avoids oxygen quenching. In addition, the near-infrared excitation, near-infrared emission, and in situ imaging of purely organic room temperature phosphorescence in assembled confinement materials are also prospected.

An unconventional organic molecule (TBBU) showing obvious long‐lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is reported. X‐ray single crystal analysis demonstrates that TBBU molecules are packed in a unique fashion with side‐by‐side arranged intermolecular aromatic rings, which is entirely different from the RTP molecules reported to date. Theoretical calculations verify that the extraordinary intermolecular interaction between neighboring molecules plays an important role in RTP of TBBU crystals. More importantly, the polymer film doped with TBBU inherits its distinctive RTP property, which is highly sensitive to oxygen. The color of the doped film changes and its RTP lifetime drops abruptly through a dynamic collisional quenching mechanism with increasing oxygen fraction, enabling visual and quantitative detection of oxygen. Through analyzing the grayscale of the phosphorescence images, a facile method is developed for rapid, visual, and quantitative detection of oxygen in the air.  相似文献

The design and preparation of metal‐free organic materials that exhibit room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is a very attractive topic owing to potential applications in organic optoelectronic devices. Herein, we present a facile approach to efficient and long‐lived organic RTP involving the doping of N‐phenylnaphthalen‐2‐amine (PNA) or its derivatives into a crystalline 4,4′‐dibromobiphenyl (DBBP) matrix. The resulting materials showed strong and persistent RTP emission with a quantum efficiency of approximately 20 % and a lifetime of a few to more than 100 milliseconds. Bright white dual emission containing blue fluorescence and yellowish‐green RTP from the PNA‐doped DBBP crystals was also confirmed by Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (x=0.29–0.31, y=0.38–0.41).  相似文献

Molecular solid‐state materials with long‐lived luminescence (such as thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) systems) are promising for display, sensoring, and bio‐imaging applications. However, the design of such materials that exhibit both long luminescent lifetime and high solid‐state emissive efficiency remains an open challenge. Two‐dimensional (2D) organic–metal halide perovskite materials have a high blue‐emitting quantum yield of up to 63.55 % and ultralong TADF lifetime of 103.12 ms at ambient temperature and atmosphere. Our design leverages the combined influences of a 2D space/electronic confinement effect and a modest heavy‐atom tuning strategy. Photophysical studies and calculations reveal that the enhanced quantum yield is due to the rigid laminate structure of perovskites, which can effectively inhibit the non‐radiative decay of excitons.  相似文献

Persistent room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in pure organic materials has attracted great attention because of their unique optical properties. The design of organic materials with bright red persistent RTP remains challenging. Herein, we report a new design strategy for realizing high brightness and long lifetime of red‐emissive RTP molecules, which is based on introducing an alkoxy spacer between the hybrid units in the molecule. The spacer offers easy Br−H bond formation during crystallization, which also facilitates intermolecular electron coupling to favor persistent RTP. As the majority of RTP compounds have to be confined in a rigid environment to quench nonradiative relaxation pathways for bright phosphorescence emission, nanocrystallization is used to not only rigidify the molecules but also offer the desirable size and water‐dispersity for biomedical applications.  相似文献

Color-tunable ultralong phosphorescence is urgently desired in optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report a new type of full-color-tunable ultralong phosphorescence carbon dots (CDs) without matrix-assistance by a self-doping method under ambient conditions. The phosphorescence color can be rationally tuned from blue to red by changing the excitation wavelength from 310 to 440 nm. The CDs exhibit an ultralong lifetime of up to 1052.23 ms at 484 nm. From the experimental data, we speculate that the excitation-dependent multi-color phosphorescence is attributed to the presence of multiple emitting centers related to carbonyl units. Given the unique color-tunability of CDs, we demonstrate their potential applications in information encryption, light detection ranging from UV to visible light and LED devices. This finding not only takes a step towards the fundamental design of full-color emissive materials, but also provides a broader scope for the applications of phosphorescent materials.

A new type of CDs with abundant carbonyl groups shows color-tunable ultralong phosphorescence from blue to red by self-doping, which was applied in information encryption and light detection.  相似文献
