Simply connected compact Kähler manifolds of dimension up to three with elliptic homotopy type are characterized in terms of their Hodge diamonds. For surfaces there are only two possibilities, namely h1,1?2 with hp,q=0 for pq. For threefolds, there are three possibilities, namely h1,1?3 with hp,q=0 for pq. This characterization in terms of the Hodge diamonds is applied to explicitly classify the simply connected Kähler surfaces and Fano threefolds with elliptic homotopy type.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an algorithm which, for a given compact orientable irreducible boundary irreducible 3-manifold M, verifies whether M contains an essential orientable surface (possibly, with boundary), whose genus is at most N. The algorithm is based on Haken’s theory of normal surfaces, and on a trick suggested by Jaco and consisting in estimating the mean length of boundary curves in an unknown essential surface of a given genus in the given manifold.  相似文献

For a finitely triangulated closed surface M 2, let αx be the sum of angles at a vertex x. By the well-known combinatorial version of the 2- dimensional Gauss-Bonnet Theorem, it holds Σx(2π - αx) = 2πχ(M 2), where χ denotes the Euler characteristic of M 2, αx denotes the sum of angles at the vertex x, and the sum is over all vertices of the triangulation. We give here an elementary proof of a straightforward higher-dimensional generalization to Euclidean simplicial complexes K without assuming any combinatorial manifold condition. First, we recall some facts on simplicial complexes, the Euler characteristics and its local version at a vertex. Then we define δ(τ) as the normed dihedral angle defect around a simplex τ. Our main result is Στ (-1)dim(τ)δ(τ) = χ(K), where the sum is over all simplices τ of the triangulation. Then we give a definition of curvature κ(x) at a vertex and we prove the vertex-version Σ xK0 κ(x) = χ(K) of this result. It also possible to prove Morse-type inequalities. Moreover, we can apply this result to combinatorial (n + 1)-manifolds W with boundary B, where we prove that the difference of Euler characteristics is given by the sum of curvatures over the interior of W plus a contribution from the normal curvature along the boundary B:

This article generalizes the formulas of Gauss-Ostrogradskii type for semibasic vector fields from Riemannian manifolds to real Finsler manifolds and obtains some formulas of Gauss-Ostrogradskii type for Finsler vector fields which are expressed in terms of the vertical and horizontal derivatives of the Cartan connection in real Finsler manifolds.  相似文献

Dwyer, Weiss, and Williams have recently defined the notions of the parametrized topological Euler characteristic and the parametrized topological Reidemeister torsion which are invariants of bundles of compact topological manifolds. We show that these invariants satisfy additivity formulas paralleling the additive properties of the classical Euler characteristic and the Reidemeister torsion of CW-complexes.  相似文献

The inverse spectral problem for Schrödinger operators on finite compact metric graphs is investigated. The relations between the spectral asymptotics and geometric properties of the underlying graph are studied. It is proven that the Euler characteristic of the graph can be calculated from the spectrum of the Schrödinger operator in the case of essentially bounded real potentials and standard boundary conditions at the vertices. Several generalizations of the presented results are discussed.  相似文献

The quantum physicists Durhuus and Jonsson (1995) [9] introduced the class of “locally constructible” (LC) triangulated manifolds and showed that all the LC 2- and 3-manifolds are spheres. We show here that for each d>3 some LC d-manifolds are not spheres. We prove this result by studying how to collapse products of manifolds with one facet removed.  相似文献

We prove an analog of the Gauss-Ostrogradskii theorem for integration over the Euler characteristic, expressing the Euler characteristic of a manifold with a boundary in terms of the zeros of a smooth dynamical system and its behaviour on the boundary. This result makes is possible to compute the Euler characteristic of a closed manifold via behaviour of a discontinuous dynamical system. The Gauss-Ostrogradskii theorem for the Euler characteristic also clarifies certain classial computations.  相似文献
