The mechanical properties and crystal morphological structures of short glass fiber (SGF) reinforced dynamically photo-irradiated polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) composites were studied by mechanical tests, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The mechanical properties of PP/EPDM composites, especially the tensile strength were greatly strengthened by dynamically photo-irradiation and the incorporation of SGF. The results from the WAXD, SEM, DSC, and TGA measurements reveal: (i) the formation of β-type crystal of PP in the PP/EPDM/SGF composite; (ii) the fiber length in dynamically photo-irradiated PP/EPDM/SGF composites are general longer than that in corresponding unirradiated samples. The size of EPDM phase in the photo-irradiated composites reduces obviously whereas the droplet number increases; (iii) photo-irradiation improves the interface adhesion between SGF and polymer matrix; (iv) the melting and crystallization temperatures of the photo-irradiated composites are not affected greatly by increasing the SGF content; (v) the thermal analysis results show that the incorporation of SGF into PP/EPDM plays an important role for increasing its thermal stability.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity and impact strength of polypropylene(PP)/EPDM/carbon black ternary composites were investigated in this paper. Two processing methods were employed to prepare these ternary composites. One was called one‐step processing method, in which the elastomer and the filler directly melt blended with PP matrix. Another one was called two‐step processing method, in which the elastomer and the filler were mixed first, and then melt blended with pure PP. To get an optimal phase morphology that favors the electrical conductivity and impact strength, controlling the distribution of CB in PP/EPDM blend was a crucial factor. Thus the interfacial tension and the work of adhesion were first calculated based on the measurement of contact angle, and the results showed that CB tended to be accumulated around EPDM phases to form filler‐network structure. Expectably, the filler‐network structure was observed in PP/EPDM/CB(80/20/3) composite prepared by two‐step processing method. The formation of this filler‐network structure decreased the percolation threshold of CB particles in polymer matrix, and the electrical conductivity as well as Izod impact strength of the composite increased dramatically. This work provided a new way to prepare polymer composites with both improved conductivity and impact strength. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The mechanical properties and the crystal morphological structures of the dynamically photocrosslinked polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends have been studied by means of mechanical tests, wide-angle X-ray diffraction(WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The dynamically photocrosslinking of the PP/EPDM blends can improve the mechanical properties considerably, especially the notched Izod impact strength at low temperatures. The data obtained from the mechanical tests show that the notched Izod impact strength of the dynamically photocrosslinked sample with 30% EPDM at -20℃ is about six times that of the uncrosslinked sample with the same EPDM component. The results from the gel content, the results of WAXD, and the DSC measurements reveal the enhanced mechanism of the impact strength for the dynamically photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends as follows: (1) There exists the crosslinking of the EPDM phase in the photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends ; (2) The β-type crystal structureof PP is formed and the content of α-type crystal decreases with increasing the EPDM component; (3) The graft copolymer of PP-g-EPDM is formed at the interface between the PP and EPDM components. All the above changes of the crystal morphological structures are favorable for increasing the compatibility and enhancing the toughness of the PP/EPDM blends at low temperatures.  相似文献

As the most successful commercialized thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs), polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene rubber (EPDM) TPVs exhibit poor oil resistance. In this work, we prepared PP/EPDM/butadiene acrylonitrile rubber (NBR) ternary TPVs with good oil resistance using core‐shell dynamic vulcanization. According to the theoretical analysis of the spreading coefficient and the transmission electron microscopy results, the rubber phases exhibited a special core‐shell structure, in which the cross‐linkedNBR‐core was encapsulated by the EPDM‐shell. The core‐shell structure effectively improved the interfacial compatibility between PP and NBR phase as the EPDM‐shell could avoid the direct contact of them, thus improving the mechanical properties of the TPVs. For example, the PP/EPDM/NBR (40/30/30) ternary TPV showed enhanced tensile strength of 12.57 MPa, compared with 10.71 MPa of PP/EPDM (40/60) TPV and 11.11 MPa of PP/NBR (40/60) TPV, respectively. Moreover, the oil resistance of the TPVs was also improved. Compared with PP/EPDM TPV, the change rates in mass, volume, tensile strength and elongation at break of PP/EPDM/NBR TPV after oil immersion decreased by 42.18%, 48.69%, 52.68% and 28.77%, respectively.  相似文献

The effect of oil and curing agent content on the mechanical behavior of thermoplastic vulcanizates, based on a polypropylene (PP) and ethylene‐propylene‐diene copolymer (EPDM), was investigated. Mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, stress at 100% elongation and ultimate stress were investigated as a function of blends' composition and phase morphology. Experimental studies show that the Young's modulus of the vulcanizates depends on both PP/EPDM ratio and oil content in the blends; both ultimate strength and stress at 100% elongation increase with curing agent content.  相似文献

The optimum condition of processing parameters (mixing temperature, rotor speed, fill factor, and blend ratio) and prediction models for the best key mechanical properties of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer/polypropylene thermoplastic vulcanizates (EPDM/PP TPVs) was investigated by using the Taguchi's optimization technique and data analysis. The results reveal that all of the processing parameters affected significantly the mechanical properties of the EPDM/PP TPVs, but specifically the blend ratio contributed more than 90% in effect size on tensile strength and tension set. There were three main factors, the mixing temperature, the fill factor, and the blend ratio, influencing the elongation at break. Furthermore, the mathematic models were effective and reliable in predicting the properties of TPVs. The correlation of mechanical properties, stress relaxation, and phase morphologies of the TPVs prepared from the predicted models was also investigated. It can be summarized that the morphological structure and stress relaxation of the TPVs were strongly governed by the EPDM content in the blend ratio. That is, the higher the EPDM content, the better phase morphology having smaller size of the vulcanized EPDM particles distributed in the PP matrix and the higher rate of stress relaxation. Moreover, these two properties were then principally pushing the mechanical characteristics of the EPDM/PP TPVs. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

For a more complete understanding of the toughening mechanism of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene‐propylene‐diene rubber (EPDM) blends, dynamic packing injection molding was used to control the phase morphology and rubber particle orientation in the matrix. The relative impact strength of the blends increased at low EPDM contents, and then a definite ductile–brittle (D–B) transition was observed when the EPDM content reached 25 wt %, at which point blends should fail in the ductile mode with conventional molding. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the shear‐induced crystal structure, morphology, orientation, and phase separation of the blends. WAXD results showed that the observed D–B transition took place mainly for a constant crystal structure (α form). Also, no remarkable changes in the crystallinity and melting point of PP were observed by DSC. The highly oriented and elongated rubber particles were seen via SEM at high EPDM contents. Our results suggest that Wu's criterion is no longer valid when dispersed rubber particles are elongated and oriented. The possible fracture mechanism is discussed on the basis of the stress concentration in a filler‐dispersed matrix. It can be concluded that not only the interparticle distance but also the stress fields around individual particles play an important role in polymer toughening. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Positron annihilation lifetime measurements were performed on pure polypropylene (PP), ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber, and their blends PP/EPDM with a series of EPDM volume fraction ϕ (= 10–40%). A numerical Laplace inversion technique (i.e., CONTIN algorithm), was employed to obtain the probability distribution functions (PDF) of free-volume radius. We observed that, first, the average free-volume radius in PP/EPDM blends is generally same as that in PP and is much smaller than that in EPDM. Second, the standard deviation σR or the width of the free-volume radius PDF in the blend decreases with ϕ in the region of ϕ = 10ndash;30%, and it increases when ϕ increases from 30% to 40%. The difference in the σR of the blend and the calculated value σc R according to the simple-mixing rule of PP and EPDM is interpreted by the existence of the two-phase interaction (i.e., the residual thermal pressure and shear stress between PP and EPDM phases in the PP/EPDM blends). The correlation between σR, which indicates the interaction of two phases, and the impact strength of PP/EPDM blends was found and discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The paper will give a short introducing survey on the present state of polyolefin and copolyolefin cross linking. The combination of high-density polyethylene (PEHD) and polypropylene (PP) with elastomers, particularly with ethylene-propylene terpolymer (EPDM), results in high-impact strength PP (HI-PP) and in thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) considered as high-performance polyolefin composites (HP-POC). By filling of PEHD and PP, HP-POCs with increased stiffness, modulus, and abrasion resistance can be produced. They are cost - advantageous substitutes for construction materials as, for example, ABS. Possibilities and limits are demonstrated by own investigations in this field. Best mechanical properties are obtained by reinforcement with fibres, particularly with glass fibres. Requirement for superior parameters is a chemical coupling between glass-fibre surface or glass-fibre size, respectively, and the PP matrix. A new adhesive agent on the basis of siloxane allows to reach high strength and toughness of the composites. The effect seems to be due to a better mutual penetration of the adhesive agent, the size, and the PP matrix. Outlooks will be given on the further development of HP-POC in the field of reinforcement and reactive combination with other polymers.  相似文献

Physically and dynamically vulcanized (TPV) mixtures of polypropylene (PP) and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) are prepared by extrusion in order to improve the impact resistance of PP. To enhance the chemical compatibility and provide better interaction between the PP and EPDM in the physical mixtures, both polymers are modified with maleic anhydride (MAH) in solution using xylene as solvent and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as initiator. The qualitative and quantitative determination of the degree of grafting is study by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and varying the amount of DCP and/or amount of MAH in order to determine the optimum amounts to obtain the highest degree of grafting. The effect of the relation of PP/EPDM, the amount of reinforcement filler and mix rate are studied for modified polymer mixtures (PP-g-MAH/EPDM-g-MAH). For the TPV of PP/EPDM the effects of amount and triallylisocyanurate (TAC) as coupling agent in presence of different amounts of DCP are studied. The physical mixtures of modified polymers prepared with a PP/EPDM ratio of 80/20 and the TPVs blends prepared with a PP/EPDM ratio of 70/30 and containing 15% filler at 60 rpm show the highest impact resistance. The impact resistance, melt flow index and hardness of the different mixtures are measured to determine their possible applications to prepare front panels and bumpers for automobiles by injection molding.  相似文献

Flame retardant fillers composed of zinc hydroxy stannate (ZHS), calcium borates (CaB), and NP‐100 were embedded separately in 50% polypropylene (PP) and 50% ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) blends. Several formulations containing flame retardant fillers, PP, and EPDM were prepared using an internal mixer and were molded in a compression mold to form test samples. The effects of filler loading (15, 30, 45, and 60 vol%) on the dielectric breakdown strength and contact angle were determined. It was found that PP/EPDM/NP‐100 has higher breakdown strength than PP/EPDM/ZHS and PP/EPDM/CaB. The contact angle of PP/EPDM/NP‐100 and PP/EPDM/ZHS showed an ascending order with filler loading, implying an increase in hydrophobicity. With regard to the PP/EPDM/CaB system, the contact angle showed an ascending order up to 30 vol% followed by a descending order at 45–60 vol%. Water absorption studies indicated that PP/EPDM/NP‐100 has lower water absorption compared with PP/EPDM/ZHS and PP/EPDM/CaB. PP/EPDM filled with 15 vol% NP‐100 was found to exhibit interesting insulating properties in comparison with other composite systems, thanks to high breakdown voltage, good hydrophobicity, and low water absorption. Microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate with polyurethane resin (PUMAPP) was prepared by in situ polymerization and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The flame retardation of PUMAPP/dipentaerythritol(DPER) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/DPER flame retarded polypropylene (PP)/ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) composites were studied using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test and cone calorimeter. Results demonstrated that the flame retardancy of the PP/EPDM/PUMAPP/DPER composites was better than that of the PP/EPDM/APP/DPER composites at the same additive loading. Real time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) were used to study the thermal degradation and stability of the PP/EPDM/PUMAPP/DPER composite. The hydrolytic stability of the flame retarded PP/EPDM composites was studied. It was found that the microencapsulation of APP with the PU resin leaded to a decrease in the particle's water solubility. Moreover, the synergistic effect of vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) on the PP/EPDM/PUMAPP/DPER composite was also investigated.  相似文献

Morphology development and phase inversion were investigated during dynamic vulcanisation of ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM)/polypropylene (PP) blends. The effects of viscosity ratio and cross-linking reactions were also addressed. EPDM/PP blends were dynamically vulcanised in a Haake batch mixer using resole and SnCl2 as cross-linking agents. The morphology development and cross-linking degree with reaction time were followed by morphology analysis (SEM and TEM) and measurement of EPDM gel content, respectively. For the same reaction time, it was found that the EPDM gel content decreased when the low-molecular-weight EPDM was used. As a result, the morphological development was delayed and the phase-inversion point was shifted to higher reaction times, allowing us to monitor morphological development during a thermoplastic vulcanisate (TPV) preparation. Using the low-molecular-weight EPDM and increasing the PP viscosity accelerated the morphological development, shifting phase-inversion to lower reaction times. While blend composition influenced final TPV morphology, it had a minor effect on the mechanism of morphological development. A correlation between cross-linking degree and morphology development was established. The results obtained allowed to propose a mechanism of morphology development during dynamic vulcanisation of the EPDM/PP blends, including phase inversion.  相似文献

In this article, the rheological properties of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM)/silicon dioxide (SiO2) ternary composites were systematically investigated. Two kinds of nano-SiO2 particles (with hydrophobic (denoted as A-SiO2) or hydrophilic (denoted as B-SiO2)) as well as two processing methods (one-step or two-step) were first employed to prepare PP/EPDM/SiO2 ternary composites. Then the deep mixing and morphology evolution of polymer composite with mixing time were assessed by rheological method, on the focus of formation of filler-network, and compared with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations. Linear viscoelastic behavior was observed for PP/EPDM and PP/SiO2 binary system, showing no evidence of the formation of filler-network structure. However, a solid-like rheological behavior, which was attributed to the formation of the filler-network structure as confirmed by SEM observation, could be observed in some PP/EPDM/SiO2 ternary systems, depending on the SiO2 surface property, processing method and EPDM content. It seemed that SiO2 with hydrophilic surface was necessary for the formation of filler-network in PP/EPDM/SiO2 ternary system. Besides, two-step processing method made the solid-like behavior occurred at an earlier stage compared with that of a one-step processing method, also, the higher elastomer content facilitated the formation of the filler-network structure. The results were in good agreement with those reported in our previous publications [Yang H, Zhang Q, Guo M, Wang C, Du R, Fu Q. Polymer 2006;47:2106] [Yang H, Zhang X, Qu C, Li B, Zhang L, Zhang Q, et al. Polymer 2007;48:860].  相似文献

Bamboo fiber (BF) as organic filler is characterized by mechanical properties analysis and morphology examination for polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) matrix blends. Effects of different filler content on tensile strength, flexural properties, and impact strength are proposed. It is observed from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies that addition of BF is beneficial in increasing mechanical strength via increasing the interface dispersed phase. The optimum tensile properties and impact properties of BF content were at 40 wt% for PP/PS/BF composite on melt mixing conditions. The results showed a significant improvement in mechanical properties of PP/PS/BF ternary blend composite. Comparing with untreated BF, content of carbon and nitrogen of treated BF decreased to 66.57 and 2.31%, oxygen content increased to 21.07%, and silicon content increased from 0 to 10.04%. The element ratio of O/C, N/C, and Si/C changed to 31.65, 3.47, and 15.08, respectively.  相似文献

Morphologies, crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of polypropylene(PP)/syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene(s-1,2 PB)blends were investigated.Morphology observation shows the well dispersed domains of s-1,2 PB in PP matrix with the rather small domain sizes from 0.1 to 0.5μm when the s-1,2 PB content increases from 5%to 20%(mass fraction)in the blends, and the phase structure tends to become co-continuous as s-1,2 PB content further increases.Crystallization temperature(Tc)of PP component in the blends is fluctuated with the variation of s-1,2 PB content in the blends.Compatibilization,to some extent, between the two components is inferred from the examination of both morphology and crystallization behavior.Improvement of impact strength of PP toughened by s-1,2 PB becomes significant only in the case of s-1,2 PB content above 20%(mass fraction).  相似文献

Waste tire powder subjected to allylamine modification in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been used to prepare polypropylene based thermoplastic vulcanizates with maleic anhydride polypropylene (MA‐PP) as compatibilizer. The effect of increasing the concentration of MA‐PP on performance characteristics like tensile strength, elongation and rheological properties have been investigated. X‐ray diffraction studies of the PP/waste tire powder blend indicate the disappearance of β crystalline peaks on addition of waste tire powder in the PP, whereas it is observed in the allylamine modified rubber powder loaded PP. Differential scanning calorimetry results further supported the above fact. The improvement in mechanical properties of the PP/allylamine modified rubber powder loaded thermoplastic vulcanizates has been explained in terms of βα transformation of PP crystals during straining of the samples and uniform dispersion of allylamine coated rubber powder in the PP matrix. The melt rheological properties of the thermoplastic vulcanizates loaded with modified rubber powder are higher than its counterpart due to the higher dispersion as a result of chemical interaction between the rubber powder surface with the MA‐PP.

The effect of the incorporation of an amorphous immiscible polymer (ethylene-propylene-diene- terpolymer) on the PP crystallization kinetics and thermodynamics is investigated by thermal analysis. The results of the investigation have shown that EPDM acts as a nucleant agent. A marked decrease of the half time of PP crystallization, τ1/2 , as well as a sensible increase of the overall crystallization rate, K n , has been observed in the presence of EPDM. Moreover, at any crystallization temperature, a minimum of τ1/2 , is obtained at 25% EPDM content in the blend. The Avrami model has been successfully applied to describe the crystallization kinetics of the blend. The kinetic curves obtained under non-isothermal conditions confirm the results obtained under isothermal conditions and demonstrate the nucleant action of the EPDM phase on the PP crystallization. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
