Biomimetic, strain‐stiffening materials are reported, made through self‐assembly and covalent fixation of small building blocks to form fibrous hydrogels that are able to stiffen by an order of magnitude in response to applied stress. The gels consist of semi‐flexible rodlike micelles of bisurea bolaamphiphiles with oligo(ethylene oxide) (EO) outer blocks and a polydiacetylene (PDA) backbone. The micelles are fibers, composed of 9–10 ribbons. A gelation method based on Cu‐catalyzed azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), was developed and shown to lead to strain‐stiffening hydrogels with unusual, yet universal, linear and nonlinear stress–strain response. Upon gelation, the X‐ray scattering profile is unchanged, suggesting that crosslinks are formed at random positions along the fiber contour without fiber bundling. The work expands current knowledge about the design principles and chemistries needed to achieve fully synthetic, biomimetic soft matter with on‐demand, targeted mechanical properties.  相似文献

The effects of functionalized graphene sheets (FGSs) on the mechanical properties and strain‐induced crystallization of natural rubber (NR) are investigated. FGSs are predominantly single sheets of graphene with a lateral size of several hundreds of nanometers and a thickness of 1.5 nm. The effect of FGS and that of carbon black (CB) on the strain‐induced crystallization of NR is compared by coupled tensile tests and X‐ray diffraction experiments. Synchrotron X‐ray scattering enables simultaneous measurements of stress and crystallization of NR in real time during sample stretching. The onset of crystallization occurs at significantly lower strains for FGS‐filled NR samples compared with CB‐filled NR, even at low loadings. Neat‐NR exhibits strain‐induced crystallization around a strain of 2.25, while incorporation of 1 and 4 wt % FGS shifts the crystallization to strains of 1.25 and 0.75, respectively. In contrast, loadings of 16 wt % CB do not significantly shift the critical strain for crystallization. Two‐dimensional (2D) wide angle X‐ray scattering patterns show minor polymer chain alignment during stretching, in accord with previous results for NR. Small angle X‐ray scattering shows that FGS is aligned in the stretching direction, whereas CB does not show alignment or anisotropy. The mechanical properties of filled NR samples are investigated using cyclic tensile and dynamic mechanical measurements above and below the glass transition of NR. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Double‐network (DN) gels subjected to cyclic deformation (stretching up to a fixed strain followed by retraction down to the zero stress) demonstrate a monotonic decrease in strain with time (self‐recovery). Observations show that the duration of total recovery varies in a wide interval (from a few minutes to several days depending on composition of the gel), and this time is strongly affected by deformation history. A model is developed for the kinetics of self‐recovery. Its ability to describe stress–strain diagrams in cyclic tests with various periods of recovery is confirmed by comparison with observations on several DN gels. Numerical simulation reveals pronounced enhancement of fatigue resistance in multi‐cycle tests with stress‐ and strain‐controlled programs when subsequent cycles of deformation are interrupted by intervals of recovery. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The chain‐stretching effect on the morphology and the corresponding rheological properties are analyzed theoretically. In order to confirm the theoretical analysis, the simulations based on the time‐dependent Ginzburg‐Landau (TDGL) equation with the free energy functional contains the information of chain conformation have been performed in q ‐space by means of the semi‐implicit Fourier spectral method. This method is more efficient and accurate, and moreover, the periodic boundary condition used in r‐space cell dynamics scheme (CDS) can be released. The simulation results agree with the theoretical analysis quite well and show that the chain‐stretching effect decreases with the increase of shear strain. For the critical system with a longer terminal Rouse relaxation time, two peaks are observed in the transient shear viscosity. It is also found that, when the shear strain is small, the chain‐stretching effect on the morphology and the corresponding rheological properties are enhanced when the terminal Rouse relaxation time is longer.  相似文献

The strain recovery of three syndiotactic polypropylenes (s‐PPs) differing in the percentage of [rrrr] pentad is investigated. A suitable method based on loading–unloading tests at constant displacement rate in tensile loading conditions is adopted to measure the residual and recovered strain components of the applied strain. The method allows to obtain a large amount of data from few tests and to explore a wide strain range. The dependence of the material's strain recovery on the applied strain is analyzed in relation to s‐PP strain‐induced microstructural changes and crystalline form transitions, which are reported in literature. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The true electric actuation thickness strain of poly (styrene‐b‐ethylbutylene‐b‐styrene) (SEBS) gel was measured using an in situ synchrotron SAXS. The thermoplastic elastomer SEBS gel was microphase‐separated to form a disordered styrene micelle nanostructure in an oil‐swollen ethylbutylene matrix. The SEBS gel showed reversible cyclic load–unload compression behavior without permanent residual strain. The electromechanical strain of the SEBS gel with carbon paste electrodes could be evaluated by means of a nanostructure dimensional change traced by using the in situ synchrotron SAXS during actuation. The strain measured with SAXS was compared with the strain measured using conventional laser displacement sensor systems. The optical laser sensor method was likely to overestimate the thickness strain due to the bending movement of the dielectric elastomer. To our knowledge, the thickness strain value measured by the synchrotron SAXS is the closest to the true strain ever measured in the field of dielectric elastomer studies, because the nanostructure dimensional change depends on the thickness dimension change, not on the translational movement like the bending motion. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Local, micromechanical environment is known to influence cellular function in heterogeneous hydrogels, and knowledge gained in micromechanics will facilitate the improved design of biomaterials for tissue regeneration. In this study, a system comprising microstructured resilin‐like polypeptide (RLP)–poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels is utilized. The micromechanical properties of RLP‐PEG hydrogels are evaluated with oscillatory shear rheometry, compression dynamic mechanic analysis, small‐strain microindentation, and large‐strain indentation and puncture over a range of different deformation length scales. The measured elastic moduli are consistent with volume averaging models, indicating that volume fraction, not domain size, plays a dominant role in determining the low strain mechanical response. Large‐strain indentation under a confocal microscope enables the visualization of the microstructured hydrogel micromechanical deformation, emphasizing the translation, rotation, and deformation of RLP‐rich domains. The fracture initiation energy results demonstrate that failure of the composite hydrogels is controlled by the RLP‐rich phase, and their independence with domain size suggested that failure initiation is controlled by multiple domains within the strained volume. This approach and findings provide new quantitative insight into the micromechanical response of soft hydrogel composites and highlight the opportunities in employing these methods to understand the physical origins of mechanical properties of soft synthetic and biological materials.  相似文献

Regioselectivity of Diels–Alder reaction of the anti‐Bredt olefin of fulleroid, the 5,6‐methylene‐bridged fullerene derivative, is theoretically clarified by DFT calculations. In transition state calculations, the addition of a noncyclic diene 2,3‐dimethyl‐1,3‐butadiene (DMBD) at the anti‐Bredt olefin has considerably lower activation energy than those at the other sixteen olefins, while the reaction of a rigid cyclic diene cyclohexadiene (CHD) has similar activation energy at both anti‐Bredt and another nontwisted olefin. The changes in strain and interaction of the reactants are estimated along its reaction coordinate by activation strain model. Noncyclic diene shows asynchronous C? C bond formation with a significant gain of interaction energy, while the rigid cyclic diene shows a large growth of strain energy canceling out the interaction energy between diene and fulleroid.  相似文献

The displacement of molecular structures from their thermodynamically most stable state by imposition of various types of electronic and conformational constraints generates highly strained entities that tend to release the accumulated strain energy by undergoing either structural changes or chemical reactions. The latter case amounts to strain‐induced reactivity (SIR) that may enforce specific chemical transformations. A particular case concerns dynamic covalent chemistry which may present SIR, whereby reversible reactions are activated by coupling to a high‐energy state. We herewith describe such a dynamic covalent chemical (DCC) system involving the reversible imine formation reaction. It is based on the formation of strained macrocyclic bis‐imine metal complexes in which the macrocyclic ligand is in a high energy form enforced by the coordination of the metal cation. Subsequent demetallation generates a highly strained free macrocycle that releases its accumulated strain energy by hydrolysis and reassembly into a resting state. Specifically, the metal‐templated condensation of a dialdehyde with a linear diamine leads to a bis‐imine [1+1]‐macrocyclic complex in which the macrocyclic ligand is in a coordination‐enforced strained conformation. Removal of the metal cation by a competing ligand yields a highly reactive [1+1]‐macrocycle, which then undergoes hydrolysis to transient non‐cyclic aminoaldehyde species, which then recondense to a strain‐free [2+2]‐macrocyclic resting state. The process can be monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Energy differences between different conformational states have been evaluated by Hartree–Fock (HF) computations. One may note that the stabilisation of high‐energy molecular forms by metal ion coordination followed by removal of the latter, offers a general procedure for producing out‐of‐equilibrium molecular states, the fate of which may then be examined, in particular when coupled to dynamic covalent chemical processes.  相似文献

Lightly cross‐linked natural rubber (NR, cis‐1,4‐polyisoprene) was found to be an exceptional cold programmable shape memory polymer (SMP) with strain storage of up to 1000%. These networks are stabilized by strain‐induced crystals. Here, we explore the influence of mechanical stress applied perpendicular to the elongation direction of the network on the stability of these crystals. We found that the material recovers its original shape at a critical transverse stress. It could be shown that this is due to a disruption of the strain‐stabilizing crystals, which represents a completely new trigger for SMPs. The variation of transverse stress allows tuning of the trigger temperature Ttrig(σ) in a range of 45 to 0 °C, which is the first example of manipulating the transition of a crystal‐stabilized SMP after programming.  相似文献

Ferroelasticity has been relatively well‐studied in mechanically robust inorganic atomic solids but poorly investigated in organic crystals, which are typically inherently fragile. The absence of precise methods for the mechanical analysis of small crystals has, no doubt, impeded research on organic ferroelasticity. The first example of ferroelasticity in an organic molecular crystal of 5‐chloro‐2‐nitroaniline is presented, with thorough characterization by macro‐ and microscopic methods. The observed cyclic stress–strain curve satisfies the requirements of ferroelasticity. Single‐crystal X‐ray structure analysis provides insight into lattice correspondence at the twining interface, which enables substantial crystal bending by a large molecular orientational shift. This deformation represents the highest maximum strain (115.9 %) among reported twinning materials, and the associated dissipated energy density of 216 kJ m−3 is relatively large, which suggests that this material is potentially useful as a mechanical damping agent.  相似文献

In elastomer/organo clay nanocomposites, the morphological characteristics, and hence the mechanical properties, of the vulcanizates are strongly influenced by the organic modifier and the vulcanization process. When the elastomer itself undergoes strain‐induced crystallization, both the organic modifier and the dispersed filler particles could significantly influence the crystallization process. These phenomena are very common in case of natural rubber‐based vulcanizates. In this study, the similar effects have been demonstrated with carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR) and organically modified layered double hydroxide (O‐LDH)‐based nanocomposites. The effect of size of the organic modifier was obviously visible on the interlayer distance of O‐LDH and also on the morphological reorganization of the dispersed O‐LDH particles during vulcanization process. The strain‐induced crystallization of the XNBR was found to be strongly dependent on the morphological change that occurs during vulcanization process. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Supramolecular structures with strain‐stiffening properties are ubiquitous in nature but remain rare in the lab. Herein, we report on strain‐stiffening supramolecular hydrogels that are entirely produced through the self‐assembly of synthetic molecular gelators. The involved gelators self‐assemble into semi‐flexible fibers, which thereby crosslink into hydrogels. Interestingly, these hydrogels are capable of stiffening in response to applied stress, resembling biological intermediate filaments system. Furthermore, strain‐stiffening hydrogel networks embedded with liposomes are constructed through orthogonal self‐assembly of gelators and phospholipids, mimicking biological tissues in both architecture and mechanical properties. This work furthers the development of biomimetic soft materials with mechanical responsiveness and presents potentially enticing applications in diverse fields, such as tissue engineering, artificial life, and strain sensors.  相似文献

The effects of molecular characteristics and processing conditions on melt‐drawing behavior of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW‐PE) are discussed, based on a combination of in situ X‐ray measurement and stress–strain behavior. The sample films of metallocene‐ and Ziegler‐catalyzed UHMW‐PEs with a similar viscosity average MW of ~107 were prepared by compression molding at 180 °C. Stress profiles recorded at 160 °C above the melting temperature of 135 °C exhibited a plateau stress region for both films. The relative change in the intensities of the amorphous scattering recorded on the equator and on the meridian indicated the orientation of amorphous chains along the draw axis with increasing strain. However, there was a substantial difference in the subsequent crystallization into the hexagonal phase, reflecting the molecular characteristics, that is, MW distribution of each sample film. Rapid crystallization into the hexagonal phase occurred at the beginning point of the plateau stress region in melt‐drawing for metallocene‐catalyzed UHMW‐PE film. In contrast, gradual crystallization into the hexagonal phase occurred at the middle point of the plateau stress region for the Ziegler‐catalyzed film, suggesting an ease of chain slippage during drawing. These results demonstrate that the difference in the MW distribution due to the polymerization catalyst system dominates the phase development mechanism during melt‐drawing. The effect of the processing conditions, that is, the including strain rate and drawing temperature, on the melt‐drawing behavior is also discussed. The obtained results indicate that the traditional temperature–strain rate relationship is effective for transient crystallization in to the hexagonal phase during melt‐drawing, as well as for typically oriented crystallization during ultradrawing in the solid state. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ability to use mechanical strain to steer chemical reactions creates completely new opportunities for solution‐ and solid‐phase synthesis of functional molecules and materials. However, this strategy is not readily applied in the bottom‐up on‐surface synthesis of well‐defined nanostructures. We report an internal strain‐induced skeletal rearrangement of one‐dimensional (1D) metal–organic chains (MOCs) via a concurrent atom shift and bond cleavage on Cu(111) at room temperature. The process involves Cu‐catalyzed debromination of organic monomers to generate 1,5‐dimethylnaphthalene diradicals that coordinate to Cu adatoms, forming MOCs with both homochiral and heterochiral naphthalene backbone arrangements. Bond‐resolved non‐contact atomic force microscopy imaging combined with density functional theory calculations showed that the relief of substrate‐induced internal strain drives the skeletal rearrangement of MOCs via 1,3‐H shifts and shift of Cu adatoms that enable migration of the monomer backbone toward an energetically favorable registry with the Cu(111) substrate. Our findings on this strain‐induced structural rearrangement in 1D systems will enrich the toolbox for on‐surface synthesis of novel functional materials and quantum nanostructures.  相似文献

As the sophistication of reactive force fields for molecular modeling continues to increase, their use and applicability has also expanded, sometimes beyond the scope of their original development. Reax Force Field (ReaxFF), for example, was originally developed to model chemical reactions, but is a promising candidate for modeling fracture because of its ability to treat covalent bond cleavage. Performing reliable simulations of a complex process like fracture, however, requires an understanding of the effects that various modeling parameters have on the behavior of the system. This work assesses the effects of time step size, thermostat algorithm and coupling coefficient, and strain rate on the fracture behavior of three carbon‐based materials: graphene, diamond, and a carbon nanotube. It is determined that the simulated stress‐strain behavior is relatively independent of the thermostat algorithm, so long as coupling coefficients are kept above a certain threshold. Likewise, the stress‐strain response of the materials was also independent of the strain rate, if it is kept below a maximum strain rate. Finally, the mechanical properties of the materials predicted by the Chenoweth C/H/O parameterization for ReaxFF are compared with literature values. Some deficiencies in the Chenoweth C/H/O parameterization for predicting mechanical properties of carbon materials are observed. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

According to the isolated pentagon rule (IPR), for stable fullerenes, the 12 pentagons should be isolated from one another by hexagons, otherwise the fused pentagons will result in an increase in the local steric strain of the fullerene cage. However, the successful isolation of more than 100 endohedral and exohedral fullerenes containing fused pentagons over the past 20 years has shown that strain release of fused pentagons in fullerene cages is feasible. Herein, we present a general overview on fused‐pentagon‐containing (i.e. non‐IPR) fullerenes through an exhaustive review of all the types of fused‐pentagon‐containing fullerenes reported to date. We clarify how the strain of fused pentagons can be released in different manners, and provide an in‐depth understanding of the role of fused pentagons in the stability, electronic properties, and chemical reactivity of fullerene cages.  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP) can hardly be reinforced by the layered silicate montmorillonite (MMT), but the material fatigue appears somewhat reduced. The probable reason is amplified competitive nucleation of the PP by MMT component. Utilizing small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) from synchrotron, we investigate the nanostructure evolution of the PP in straining experiments from neat PP and compatibilized composite materials. The compatibilizer is a styrene–ethylene/butylene–styrene copolymer (SEBS). Oriented injection‐molded test bars are studied. The discrete SAXS probes variations of sizes and distances among those crystalline domains that are not placed at random. Crystallite dimensions and distances are documented for modeling purposes. The nanoscopic strain is computed from the distance variation and compared with the macroscopic strain. Differences between macroscopic and nanoscopic strain are observed. They require postulating regions with statistical placement of crystallites (poorly arranged region, PAR) in addition to the SAXS‐probed well‐arranged semi‐crystalline entities (WAE). The extensibility of WAEs must be different from that of the PARs. In neat PP, the observed WAEs are well developed and stronger than the PARs. In the composites, the WAEs are made from thin and less extended crystalline domains. They are weaker than the PARs that appear reinforced. Thus, enclosing each MMT layer a PAR is formed, and the WAEs generated farther away remain imperfect. Consequently, in the composites, the narrow crystalline domains from the WAEs do not break into even smaller pieces, and the fatigue of the composites is lower than that of the neat PP. Dielectric elastomer (DE) actuators have been shown to have promising applications as soft electromechanical transducers in many emerging technologies. The DE actuators, which are capable of large actuation strain over a wide range of excitation frequencies, are highly desirable. Here, the first single‐component DE of a triblock copolymer with attractive electromechanical performance is reported. Symmetric poly(styrene‐b‐butyl acrylate‐b‐styrene) (SBAS) is designed and synthesized. The SBAS actuator exhibits about 100% static actuation area strain and excellent dynamic performance, as evidenced by a wide half bandwidth of 300 Hz and a very high specific power of 1.2 W g–1 within the excitation frequency range of 300–800 Hz.  相似文献
