High-resolution core-level photoemission and scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction (PhD) of the O 1s and N 1s states have been used to investigate the interaction of glycine with the rutile TiO2(1 1 0) surface. Whilst there is clear evidence for the presence of the zwitterion CH2COO with multilayer deposition, at low coverage only the deprotonated glycinate species, NH2CH2COO is present. Multiple-scattering simulations of the O 1s PhD data show the glycinate is bonded to the surface through the two carboxylate O atoms which occupy near-atop sites above the five-fold-coordinated surface Ti atoms, with a Ti-O bondlength of 2.12 ± 0.06 Å. Atomic hydrogen arising from the deprotonation is coadsorbed to form hydroxyl species at the bridging oxygen sites with an associated Ti-O bondlength of 2.01 ± 0.03 Å. Absence of any significant PhD modulations of the N 1s emission is consistent with the amino N atom not being involved in the surface bonding, unlike the case of glycinate on Cu(1 1 0) and Cu(1 0 0).  相似文献

Au/TiO2/Ru(0 0 0 1) model catalysts and their interaction with CO were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and different surface spectroscopies. Thin titanium oxide films were prepared by Ti deposition on Ru(0 0 0 1) in an O2 atmosphere and subsequent annealing in O2. By optimizing the conditions for deposition and post-treatment, smooth films were obtained either as fully oxidized TiO2 or as partly reduced TiOx, depending on the preparation conditions. CO adsorbed molecularly on both oxidized and reduced TiO2, with slightly stronger bonding on the reduced films. Model catalyst surfaces were prepared by depositing submonolayer quantities of Au on the films and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, a weak interaction between the Au and the TiO2 substrate was found. At 100 K CO adsorption occurred on both the TiO2 film and on the Au nanoparticles. CO desorbed from the Au particles with activation energies between 53 and 65 kJ/mol, depending on the Au coverage. If the Au deposit was annealed to 770 K prior to CO exposure, the CO adsorption energy decreased significantly. STM measurements revealed that the Au particles grow upon annealing, but are not encapsulated by TiOx suboxides. The higher CO adsorption energy observed for smaller Au coverages and before annealing is attributed to a significantly stronger interaction of CO with mono- and bilayer Au islands, while for higher particles, the adsorption energy becomes more bulk-like. The implications of these effects on the known particle size effects in CO oxidation over supported Au/TiO2 catalysts are discussed.  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption structure of acetic anhydride on a TiO2(1 1 0) surface using XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), LEED (low energy electron diffraction) and HREELS (high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy) to determine the origins of the unique adsorption properties of carboxylic acids on a TiO2(1 1 0) surface. The C 1s XPS data indicated that the saturation carbon amount of adsorbed acetic anhydride was 12 ± 3% larger than that of the adsorbed acetic acid. LEED showed p(2 × 1) weak spots for the acetic anhydride adsorbed surface. The HREELS spectra revealed the dissociative adsorption of acetic anhydride. Based on these findings, we concluded that the neutralization of the bridging oxygen atoms associated with the dissociative adsorption is necessary for the stable adsorption of carboxylates on the 5-fold Ti sites.  相似文献

The structural and electronic properties of fully-relaxed PbTiO3 (0 0 1) oxygen-vacancy surface with PbO and TiO2 terminations are investigated by first-principles calculations. In contrast to the perfect surface, the smaller surface rumples and interlayer distances have been found. The largest relaxation occurs on the second layer atoms not on the surface layer ones, and some in-gap Ti 3d states at about −1.1 eV below the Fermi-level are observed in the TiO2-terminated surface caused by oxygen-vacancies. For the PbO-terminated surface, some in-gap Ti 3d states and Pb 6p states also move into the bulk midgap region to become partially occupied, and two different chemical states of the Pb 6s states were found. One is attributed to the bulk perovskite Pb atoms and another one is caused by the relaxation of surface Pb atoms. These theoretical results would give a good reference for the future experimental studies.  相似文献

Titanium dioxide films were grown on Re(1 0 −1 0) by Ti vapor deposition in oxygen at T = 830 K and studied by means of low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy ion scattering (LEIS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Ti oxide stoichiometry was determined by XPS as Ti:O = 1:2, with the Ti oxidation state (4+). The TiO2 growth was monitored by means of LEED as a function of film thickness. Extending the coverage from the submonolayer into the multilayer regime gives rise to a p(2 × 2) pattern, a (poorly ordered) (1 × 1), and, finally, a stable (2 × 2) structure, the latter being associated with a homogeneous TiO2 phase. For normal electron incidence, the (2 × 2) LEED pattern exhibits systematically extinguished beams at (n ± 1/2, 0) positions, indicating a glide mirror plane. The pg(2 × 2) structure could be explained by both a rutile(0 1 1)-(2 × 1) reconstructed surface and a bulk truncated brookite(0 0 1) surface. Faceting phenomena, i.e. running LEED spots, observed with thin TiO2 films point to the formation of a rutile(0 1 1)-(2 × 1) surface with two domains and {0 1 1}-(2 × 1) facets and rule out the brookite alternative. Confirmation of this assignment was obtained by an XRD analysis performed at the Berlin synchrotron facility BESSY.  相似文献

We report photoelectron diffraction (PED) experiments of weakly sub-stoichiometric TiO2(1 0 0) rutile surfaces. Apart from standard core-level PED from the Ti-2p3/2 line, we have studied valence band PED from the defect induced Ti-3d states in the insulating band gap. For maximum yield, the latter were resonantly excited at the Ti-2p absorption edge. The PED patterns have been analyzed within the forward scattering approximation as well as by comparison with simulated PED patterns obtained in multiple scattering calculations. The analysis shows that the defect induced Ti-3d charge is mainly located on the second layer Ti atoms.  相似文献

Scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction using the O 1s and V 2p emission perpendicular to the surface has been used to investigate the orientation and internal conformation of vanadyl phthalocyanine (VOPc) adsorbed on Au(1 1 1). The results confirm earlier indications from scanning tunnelling microscopy that the VO vanadyl bond points out of, and not into, the surface. The VO bondlength is 1.60 ± 0.04 Å, not significantly different from its value in bulk crystalline VOPc. However, the V atom in the adsorbed molecule is almost coplanar with the surrounding N atoms and is thus pulled down into the approximately planar region defined by the N and C atoms by 0.52 (+0.14/−0.10) Å, relative to its location in crystalline VOPc. This change must be attributed to the bonding interaction between the molecule and the underlying metal surface.  相似文献

Experimental observations indicate that removing bridging oxygen atoms from the TiO2 rutile (1 1 0) surface produces a localised state approximately 0.7 eV below the conduction band. The corresponding excess electron density is thought to localise on the pair of Ti atoms neighbouring the vacancy; formally giving two Ti3+ sites. We consider the electronic structure and geometry of the oxygen deficient TiO2 rutile (1 1 0) surface using both gradient-corrected density functional theory (GGA DFT) and DFT corrected for on-site Coulomb interactions (GGA + U) to allow a direct comparison of the two methods. We show that GGA fails to predict the experimentally observed electronic structure, in agreement with previous uncorrected DFT calculations on this system. Introducing the +U term encourages localisation of the excess electronic charge, with the qualitative distribution depending on the value of U. For low values of U (?4.0 eV) the charge localises in the sub-surface layers occupied in the GGA solution at arbitrary Ti sites, whereas higher values of U (?4.2 eV) predict strong localisation with the excess electronic charge mainly on the two Ti atoms neighbouring the vacancy. The precise charge distribution for these larger U values is found to differ from that predicted by previous hybrid-DFT calculations.  相似文献

The results of first-principles calculations about the two possible terminations of (0 0 1) surface of SrTiO3 perovskite and adsorption of NO on SrTiO3 (0 0 1) surface were presented. Both surface parameters (atomic structures and electronic configurations) and adsorption parameters (bond, energy and charge) of NO on SrTiO3 (0 0 1) surface, which have never been investigated before as far as we know were investigated using density functional theory calculations with the local-density approximation (DFT-LDA). It was found that the two possible terminations of SrTiO3 (0 0 1) surface have large surface relaxation, which leads to surface polarization and exhibits different reactivity toward the dissociative adsorption of NO. The electronic states of TiO2-terminated surface have larger difference than that of bulk, so it is more favorable for adsorption of NO than SrO-terminated surface.  相似文献

XPS and periodic DFT calculations have been used to investigate water sorption on the TiO2 rutile (1 1 0) face. Two sets of XPS spectra were collected on the TiO2 (1 1 0) single crystal clean and previously exposed to water: the first set with photoelectrons collected in a direction parallel to the normal to the surface; and the second set with the sample tilted by 70°, respectively. This tilting procedure promotes the signals from surface species and reveals that the first hydration layer is strongly coordinated to the surface and also that, despite the fact that the spectra were recorded under ultra-high vacuum, water molecules subsist in upper hydration layers. In addition, periodic DFT calculations were performed to investigate the water adsorption process to determine if molecular and/or dissociative adsorption takes place. The first step of the theoretical part was the optimisation of a dry surface model and then the investigation of water adsorption. The calculated molecular water adsorption energies are consistent with previously published experimental data and it appears that even though it is slightly less stable, the dissociative water sorption can also take place. This assumption was considered, in a second step, on a larger surface model where molecular and dissociated water molecules were adsorbed together with different ratio. It was found that, due to hydrogen bonding stabilisation, molecular and dissociated water molecules can coexist on the surface if the ratio of dissociated water molecules is less than ≈33%. These results are consistent with previous experimental works giving a 10-25% range.  相似文献

N 1s and O 1s scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction (PhD) has been used to investigate the local structure of a single enantiomer of deprotonated alanine, alaninate, NH2CH3CHCOO-, on Cu(1 1 0) in the (3 × 2) phase. The local site is found to be similar to that of glycinate on Cu(1 1 0), with the N atoms in near-atop sites and the O atoms sites consistent with bonding to single surface Cu atoms but substantially off-atop. Unlike the Cu(1 1 0)(3 × 2)pg-glycinate phase, however, in which the two molecular species per unit mesh are mirror images of one another in identical local sites, the intrinsic chirality of l-alaninate means that the two molecules per unit mesh of the (3 × 2) surface phase occupy slightly different local sites. However, an excellent fit to the PhD data can be achieved by a minor modification of the structure found in DFT calculations by R.B. Rankin and D.S. Sholl [Surf. Sci. 574 (2005) L1] in which the heights of the N and O atoms above the surface are reduced by approximately 0.1 Å. The resulting average N-Cu and O-Cu values are 2.02 and 1.98 Å, respectively, with an estimated precision of ±0.03 Å. These bondlengths are shorter than those obtained from DFT by 0.08 and 0.10 Å, respectively.  相似文献

Growth modes and electronic properties were analyzed for Au nano-particles grown on stoichiometric and reduced TiO2(1 1 0) substrates by medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) and photoelectron spectroscopy(PES) using synchrotron-radiation-light. Initially, two-dimensional islands (2D) with a height of one and two atomic layers grow and higher coverage increases the islands height to form three-dimensional (3D) islands for the stoichiometric TiO2(1 1 0) substrate. In contrast, 3D islands start to grow from initial stage with a small Au coverage (?0.1 ML, 1 ML = 1.39 × 1015  atoms/cm2: Au(1 1 1)) probably due to O-vacancies acting as a nucleation site. Above 0.7 ML, all the islands become 3D ones taking a shape of a partial sphere and the Au clusters change to metal for both substrates. We observed the Au 4f and Ti 3p core level shifts together with the valence band spectra. The Ti 3p peak for the O-deficient surface shifts to higher binding energy by 0.25 ± 0.05 eV compared to that for the stoichiometric surface, indicating downward band bending by an electron charge transfer from an O-vacancy induced surface state band to n-type TiO2 substrate. Higher binding energy shifts of Au 4f peaks observed for both substrates reveal an electron charge transfer from Au to TiO2 substrates. The work functions of Au nano-particles supported on the stoichiometric and reduced TiO2 substrates were also determined as a function of Au coverage and explained clearly by the above surface and interface dipoles.  相似文献

The local adsorption structures of the surface species formed by interaction of thymine with a Cu(1 1 0) surface at room temperature, and after heating to ∼530 K, have been investigated. Initial characterisation by soft-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and O K-edge near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) indicates the effect of sequential dehydrogenation of the NH species and provides information on the molecular orientation. O 1s and N 1s scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction shows the species at both temperatures bond to the surface through both carbonyl O atoms and the deprotonated N atom between them, each bonding atom adopting near-atop sites on the outermost Cu surface layer. The associated bondlengths are 1.96 ± 0.03 Å for Cu-N and 1.91 ± 0.03 Å and 2.03 ± 0.03 Å for the two inequivalent Cu--O bonds. The molecular plane lies almost exactly in the close-packed azimuth, but with a tilt relative to the surface normal of approximately 20°. Heating to ∼530 K, or deposition at this temperature, appears to lead to dehydrogenation of the second N atom in the ring, but no significant change in the adsorption geometry.  相似文献

The local adsorption geometry of CO adsorbed in different states on Ni(1 0 0) and on Ni(1 0 0) precovered with atomic hydrogen has been determined by C 1s (and O 1s) scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction, using the photoelectron binding energy changes to characterise the different states. The results confirm previous spectroscopic assignments of local atop and bridge sites both with and without coadsorbed hydrogen. The measured Ni–C bondlengths for the Ni(1 0 0)/CO states show an increase of 0.16 ± 0.04 Å in going from atop to bridge sites, while comparison with similar results for Ni(1 1 1)/CO for threefold coordinated adsorption sites show a further lengthening of the bond by 0.05 ± 0.04 Å. These changes in the Ni–CO chemisorption bondlength with bond order (for approximately constant adsorption energy) are consistent with the standard Pauling rules. However, comparison of CO adsorbed in the atop geometry with and without coadsorbed hydrogen shows that the coadsorption increases the Ni–C bondlength by only 0.06 ± 0.04 Å, despite the decrease in adsorption energy of a factor of 2 or more. This result is also reproduced by density functional theory slab calculations. The results of both the experiments and the density functional theory calculations show that CO adsorption onto the Ni(1 0 0)/H surface is accompanied by significant structural modification; the low desorption energy may then be attributed to the energy cost of this restructuring rather than weak local bonding.  相似文献

The electronic states of the Fe overlayers on TiO2(1 1 0) surfaces have been investigated using normal-emission and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation. It was found that Fe grows in a Stranski-Krastanov mode. At low coverages, Fe deposition on TiO2(1 1 0) is supposed to create surface Ti3+(3d1) ions leading to the same in-gap emission as that is produced by surface oxygen vacancies of TiO2. At high coverages, Fe-induced in-gap emission is evolved into a bulk Fe spectrum. However, at the beginning, a Fermi edge is not observed, indicating that the small Fe clusters of non-metallic nature are formed. A sharp Fermi edge is formed at higher coverages, indicating that the cluster becomes metallic as the size increases.  相似文献

Scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction (PhD), using the O 1s and V 2p photoemission signals, together with multiple-scattering simulations, have been used to investigate the structure of the V2O3(0 0 0 1) surface. The results support a strongly-relaxed half-metal termination of the bulk, similar to that found in earlier studies of Al2O3(0 0 0 1) and Cr2O3(0 0 0 1) surfaces based on low energy electron and surface X-ray diffraction methods. However, the PhD investigation fails to provide definitive evidence for the presence or absence of surface vanadyl (VO) species associated with atop O atoms on the surface layer of V atoms. Specifically, the best-fit structure does not include these vanadyl species, although an alternative model with similar relaxations but including vanadyl O atoms yields a reliability-factor within the variance of that of the best-fit structure.  相似文献

We have recently reported structure solutions for the (2 × 1) and c(4 × 2) reconstructions of SrTiO3(0 0 1) based on high-resolution electron microscopy, direct methods analysis of diffraction data and density functional theory. Both reconstructions were found to be TiO2-rich and feature a single overlayer of TiO2 stoichiometry on top of a bulk-like TiO2 layer. Qualitatively, the two reconstruction geometries differ in the cation sub-lattice of the overlayer only, where Ti atoms occupy half of the fivefold cation sites. In the present work we use density functional theory to generate a number of variations of this structural motif in search of patterns of stability. We find a reliable predictor for the reconstruction energy in the ability of oxygen atoms to relax vertically out of the overlayer plane to minimize non-bonded oxygen-oxygen repulsions. Out-of-plane relaxation of oxygen atoms in turn is modulated by the number and relative position of coordinating Ti atoms, which yields simple empirical rules as to how cations are distributed in low energy reconstructions.  相似文献

A soft X-ray appearance potential spectroscopy (SXAPS) apparatus with high sensitivity was built to measure non-derivative spectra. SXAPS spectra (non-derivative) of Ti 2p and O 1s for TiO2(1 1 0)-1 × 2 and (0 0 1)-1 × 1 surfaces have been measured using low incident currents (about 10 μA/cm2) and a photon counting mode. Density of empty states on Ti and O sites are deduced by self-deconvoluting the spectra. The self-deconvoluted SXAPS spectra are qualitatively similar to those measured by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ti 2p3/2 spectrum shows two strong peaks which correspond to t2g and eg states. For the O 1s spectrum two strong peaks near the threshold are also found which can be ascribed to O 2pπ and O 2pσ states. These results suggest that the spectra almost obey the dipole selection rule, so-called the “approximate dipole selection rule”. The SXAPS spectra of Ti 2p and O 1s for the (1 1 0) and (0 0 1) surfaces resemble qualitatively, which is consistent with the XAS results. The spectra measured on the (1 1 0)-1 × 2 surface at an incident angle of 45° off normal to the surface and on the (1 1 0) surface sputtered by Ar ions indicate that SXAPS is very sensitive to the surface electronic states.  相似文献

A quantum modeling of the CO adsorption on illuminated anatase TiO2 (0 0 1) is presented. The calculated adsorption energy and geometries of illuminated case are compared with the ground state case. The calculations were achieved by using DFT formalism and the BH and HLYP. Upon photoexcitation, an electron-hole pair is generated. Comparing of natural population in the ground state and the exited state, shows that an electron is trapped in a Ti4+ ion and a hole is localized in an oxygen ion. The photoelectron helps generation of a CO2 molecule on the TiO2 surface. As shown by optimization of these systems, the CO molecule adsorbed vertically on the TiO2 (0 0 1) surface in the ground state case while the CO molecule made an angle of 134.3° to this surface at the excited state case. Based on the here used model the obtained adsorption energy was 0.36 eV which is in excellent agreement with the reported experimental value. In the present work the C-O stretch IR frequencies are calculated which are 1366.53 and 1423.16 cm−1. These results are in good agreement with the earlier reported works for the surface carbonaceous compounds, and oxygenated carbon species.  相似文献

We have employed low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to follow the epitaxial growth of thin films of TiO2 on W(1 0 0). The films were grown both by metal vapour deposition of titanium onto the substrate in UHV with subsequent annealing in a low partial pressure of oxygen, and by metal vapour deposition in a low partial pressure of oxygen. LEED patterns showed the characteristic patterns of (1 1 0) oriented rutile. A systematic spot splitting was observed and attributed to a stepped surface. The calculated step height was found to be in good agreement with that expected for rutile TiO2(1 1 0), 3.3 Å. Titanium core level shifts were used to identify oxidation states as a function of film thickness allowing the interpretation in terms of a slightly sub-stoichiometric interface layer in contact with the substrate. In combination with the LEED patterns, the film structure is therefore determined to be (1 1 0) oriented rutile with a comparable level of stoichiometry to UHV prepared bulk crystals. The ordered step structure indicates considerable structural complexity of the surface.  相似文献
