The Au silicide islands have been fabricated by additional deposition of Au on the prepared surface at 270 °C where the Si islands of magic sizes were formed on the Si(1 1 1)-(7 × 7) dimer-adatom-stacking fault substrate. The surface structure on the Au silicide islands shows the Au/Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3 reconstructed structure although the substrate remains 7 × 7 DAS structure. The size of the Au silicide islands depends on the size distribution of the preformed Si islands, because the initial size and shape of the Si islands play important roles in the formation of the Au silicide island. We have achieved the fabrication of the Au silicide islands of about the same size (∼5 nm) and the same shape by controlling the initial Si growth and the additional Au growth conditions.  相似文献

Au island nucleation and growth on a Si(1 1 1) 7 × 7 vicinal surface was studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy. The surface was prepared to have a regular array of step bunches. Growth temperature and Au coverage were varied in the 255-430 °C substrate temperature range and from 1 to 7 monolayers, respectively. Two kinds of islands are observed on the surface: Au-Si reconstructed islands on the terraces and three-dimensional (3D) islands along the step bunches. Focusing on the latter, the dependence of island density, size and position on substrate temperature and on Au coverage is investigated. At 340 °C and above, hemispherical 3D islands nucleate systematically on the step edges.  相似文献

Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES), Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) and Photoelectron Yield Spectroscopy (PYS) measurements have been used to monitor the interaction of gold (Au) deposits on InSe/Si(1 1 1) substrate. Au has been sequentially deposed under ultra-high vacuum onto 40 Å-thick film of layered semiconductor InSe which is epitaxially grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on a Si(1 1 1)1 × 1-H substrate and kept at room temperature. Au coverage varies from 0.5 monolayer to 20 monolayers (ML) (in terms of InSe atomic surface plane: 1 ML = 7.2 1014 at/cm2) which is corresponding to 1.30 Å of Au-metal. The Au/InSe/Si(1 1 1) system was characterized as function of Au deposit, we noticed an interaction at room temperature starts as an apparent intercalation process until 5 ML. Beyond this dose Au islands begin to form on the sample surface without interaction with InSe substrate, thus the interface is far from to be a simple junction Au-InSe.  相似文献

Homoepitaxial growth of Au on Bi-covered Au(1 1 1) was studied at room temperature using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). From observations of RHEED it is found that the Au(1 1 1) (23 × 1) reconstruction structure changes to a (1 × 1) by about 0.16-0.5 ML deposition of Bi and to a (2√3 × 2√3)R30° by about 1.0 ML deposition of Bi, respectively. The surface morphology evolution by Bi deposition leads to a change of Au homoepitaxial growth behavior from layer-by-layer to step flow. This indicates that the surface diffusion distance of Au atoms on the Bi-precovered (1 × 1) and (2√3 × 2√3)R30° surfaces is longer than that on the Au(1 1 1) (23 × 1) clean surfaces. A strong surface segregation of Bi was found at top of surface. It is concluded that Bi atoms acted as an effective surfactant in the Au homoepitaxial growth by promoting Au intralayer mass transport.  相似文献

Intermixing, growth, geometric and electronic structures of gold films grown on antiferromagnetic stacking body-centered-tetragonal manganese (0 0 1) films were studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy at room temperature in ultra-high vacuum. We found stable ordered c(2 × 2)-MnAu(0 0 1) alloy layers after depositing Au on pure Mn layers. Since at the fourth layer (5 × 23)-like Au reconstruction appears instead of the c(2 × 2) structure and local density of states peaks obtained on the c(2 × 2)-MnAu surface disappear, pure Au layers likely grow from the fourth layer.  相似文献

The Au/Ti(0 0 0 1) adsorption system was studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and photoemission spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation after step-wise Au evaporation onto the Ti(0 0 0 1) surface. For adsorption of Au at 300 K, no additional superstructures were observed and the (1 × 1) pattern of the clean surface simply became diffuse. Annealing of gold layers more than 1 ML thick resulted in the formation of an ordered Au-Ti surface alloy. Depending on the temperature and annealing time, three surface reconstructions were observed by LEED: (√3 × √3) R30°, (2 × 2) and a one-dimensional incommensurate (√3 × √3) rectangular pattern. The Au 4f core level and valence band photoemission spectra provided evidence of a strong chemical interaction between gold and titanium. The data indicated formation of an intermetallic interface and associated valence orbital hybridization, together with diffusion of gold into the bulk. Au core-level shifts were found to be dependent on the surface alloy stoichiometry.  相似文献

The Au adsorption induced √21 × √21 super-lattice structure on the Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3-Ag structure has been investigated using reflection high-energy positron diffraction. The height of the Au adatom was determined to be 0.59 Å from the underlying Ag layer from the rocking curve analysis with the dynamical diffraction theory. The adatoms were preferentially situated at the center of the large Ag triangle of the inequivalent triangle structure of the Si(1 1 1)-√3 × √3-Ag substrate. From the intensity distribution in the fractional-order Laue zone, the in-plane coordinate of the Au adatoms was obtained.  相似文献

The growth mode and electronic structure of Au nano-clusters grown on NiO and TiO2 were analyzed by reflection high-energy electron diffraction, a field-emission type scanning electron microscope, medium energy ion scattering and photoelectron spectroscopy. Au was deposited on clean NiO(0 0 1)-1 × 1 and TiO2(1 1 0)-1 × 1 surfaces at room temperature with a Knudsen cell at a rate of 0.25-0.35 ML/min (1 ML = 1.39 × 1015 atoms/cm2:Au(1 1 1)). Initially two-dimensional (2D) islands with thickness of one Au-atom layer grow epitaxially on NiO(0 0 1) and then neighboring 2D-islands link each other to form three-dimensional (3D)-islands with the c-axis oriented to the [1 1 1] direction. The critical size to form 3D-islands is estimated to be about 5 nm2. The shape of the 3D-islands is well approximated by a partial sphere with a diameter d and height h ranging from 2.0 to 11.8 nm and from 0.95 to 4.2 nm, respectively for Au coverage from 0.13 to 4.6 ML. The valence band spectra show that the Au/NiO and Au/TiO2 surfaces have metallic characters for Au coverage above 0.9 ML. We observed Au 4f spectra and found no binding energy shift for Au/NiO but significant higher binding energy shifts for Au/TiO2 due to an electron charge transfer from Au to TiO2. The work function of Au/NiO(0 0 1) gradually increases with increase in Au coverage from 4.4 eV (NiO(0 0 1)) to 5.36 eV (Au(1 1 1)). In contrast, a small Au deposition(0.15 to 1.5 ML) on TiO2(1 1 0) leads to reduction of the work function, which is correlated with an electron charge transfer from Au to TiO2 substrate.  相似文献

The adsorption and desorption of sulphur on the clean reconstructed Au(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface has been studied by low energy electron diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption. The results obtained show a complex behaviour of the S/Au(1 1 0) system during sulphur desorption at different temperatures. Two structures of the stable ordered sulphur overlayer on the Au(1 1 0) surface, p(4 × 2) and c(4 × 4), were found after annealing the S/Au(1 1 0) system at 630 K and 463 K, respectively. The corresponding sulphur coverage for these overlayers was estimated by AES signal intensity analysis of the Au NOO and S LMM Auger lines to be equal to 0.13 ML and 0.2 ML, respectively. Both sulphur structures appear after removing an excess of sulphur, which mainly desorbs at 358 K as determined from TPD spectra. Furthermore, it was not possible to produce the lower coverage p(4 × 2) sulphur structure by annealing the c(4 × 4) surface. In the case of the p(4 × 2) S overlayer on the Au(1 1 0)-(1 × 2) surface it is proposed that the sulphur is attached to “missing row” sites only. The c(4 × 4) S overlayer arises via desorption of S2 molecules that are formed on the surface due to mobility of sulphur atoms after a prolonged anneal.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on the growth process of ultra-thin Ag and Au layers on the Mo(1 1 1) surface was investigated. At 300 K growth of the Stranski-Krastanov type was found for Ag; for Au growth of the monolayer plus simultaneous multilayers type was found, where a base layer is one physical layer. The first three geometrical adsorbed layers for Ag are thermally stable. For annealed Au layers triangle features with base side length from 15 to 35 Å were formed for θ < 6 monolayer (ML), and for θ > 6 ML part of the Au formed a flat adlayer with Au atoms grouped in equilateral triangles with side length 7 Å. The presence of Au layers does not cause faceting, layers are not smooth which could be caused by the fact that Au does not wets the substrate. For Ag thick layers reversible wetting/non-wetting transition was observed at 600 K. Ag layers on Mo(1 1 1) surface did not lead to faceting.  相似文献

We investigate the structure of submonolayer film of 4,4′-biphenyl dicarboxylic acid (BDA) molecules on Au(1 1 1)-22 × √3 reconstructed surface with the use of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The BDA molecules form ordered structures on Au(1 1 1) surface which are commensurate with the substrate. We have concluded that the molecule-molecule interaction is mainly through hydrogen bonding formed by a straight dimer of BDA molecules. The straight dimer can be expressed as 4s + 2t or its six crystallographic equivalents using the unit vectors of the gold substrate of s and t. The length of hydrogen bonding (O-H-O) is estimated to be 0.31 nm assuming nearest neighbor distance of gold atoms of 0.275 nm. The ordering shows a clear contrast with the case of BDA on Cu(1 0 0) surface [S. Stepanow, N. Lin, F. Vidal, A. Landa, M. Ruben, J.V. Barth, K. Kern, Nanoletters 5 (2005) 901] in which a square type of ordering of molecules is observed by the formation of hydrogen bonding between a carboxylate (COO) and a benzene ring. The clear difference of the ordered structure on Cu(1 0 0) and Au(1 1 1) surface demonstrates that the absence (presence) of deprotonation of carboxyl group of BDA molecule on Au(1 1 1) (Cu(1 0 0)) switches the straight and square type ordering of BDA molecules.  相似文献

Possible formation of stable Au atomic wire on the hydrogen terminated Si(0 0 1): 3×1 surface is investigated under the density functional formalism. The hydrogen terminated Si(0 0 1): 3×1 surface is patterned in two different ways by removing selective hydrogen atoms from the surface. The adsorption of Au on such surfaces is studied at different sub-monolayer coverages. At 4/9 monolayer (ML) coverage, zigzag continuous Au chains are found to be stable on the patterned hydrogen terminated Si(0 0 1): 3×1 surface. The reason for the stability of the wire structures at 4/9 ML coverage is explained. It is to be noted that beyond 4/9 ML coverage, the additional Au atoms may introduce clusters on the surface. The continuous atomic gold chains on the substrate may be useful for the fabrication of atomic scale devices.  相似文献

Miniaturizing of electronic devices requires that conductive elements maintain advanced electrical characteristics upon reducing their geometrical sizes. For gold, which is valued for its high electrical conductivity and stability against ambient conditions, creation of extra-thin films on silicon is hampered by formation of the quite complex Au/Si interface. In the present work, by forming a Si(1 1 1)5.55 × 5.55-Cu surface reconstruction prior to Au deposition we formed Au films with smoother surface morphology and higher surface conductivity compared to Au film grown on a pristine Si(1 1 1)7 × 7 surface. Scanning tunnelling microscopy and four-point probe measurements were used to characterize the growth mode of the Au film on a Si(1 1 1)5.55 × 5.55-Cu reconstruction at room temperature.  相似文献

High temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy (HT-STS) was used to investigate the electronic structure of Au(1 1 1) at different temperatures in the energy range 0-1 eV below the Fermi level. We concentrated on the influence of temperature on the Shockley surface state (SS) appearing on noble metals surface due to a surface projected bulk bang gap in [1 1 1] direction. The influence of temperature on the projected band gap edge (BE) was also investigated. The experiment was carried out in the temperature range 294-580 K. As the result of the experiment a delicate shift of the SS and the BE in direction of the Fermi level was reported.  相似文献

We have investigated the initial stages of the growth of pentacene thin films on the Au(1 0 0) substrate using synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Results indicate a well-ordered structure with the pentacene molecules adopting a predominantly flat orientation with respect to the substrate for coverages of less than three monolayers. NEXAFS and photoemission data indicates the presence of a second molecular orientation for thicker films, with the introduction of a slight tilting away from planar bonding geometry at higher pentacene coverages. STM images of coverages less than three monolayers indicate a well-ordered pentacene structure allowing for the calculation of pentacene unit cell parameters. The pentacene molecular rows adopt a side-by-side bonding arrangement on the surface. For pentacene deposited at room temperature, step edges were observed to act as nucleation centres for film growth. Annealing of the substrate to 373 K was found to remove excess molecules and improve film quality, but did not otherwise change the bonding geometry of the pentacene with respect to the surface.  相似文献

The adsorption of oxygen and the nanometer-scale faceting induced by oxygen have been studied on Ir(2 1 0). Oxygen is found to chemisorb dissociatively on Ir(2 1 0) at room temperature. The molecular desorption process is complex, as revealed by a detailed kinetic analysis of desorption spectra. Pyramid-shaped facets with {3 1 1} and (1 1 0) orientations are formed on the oxygen-covered Ir(2 1 0) surface when annealed to T?600 K. The surface remains faceted for substrate temperatures T<850 K. For T>850 K, the substrate structure reverts to the oxygen-covered (2 1 0) planar state and does so reversibly, provided that oxygen is not lost due to desorption or via chemical reactions upon which the planar (2 1 0) structure remains. A clean faceted surface was prepared through the use of low temperature surface cleaning methods: using CO oxidation, or reaction of H2 to form H2O, oxygen can be removed from the surface while preserving (“freezing”) the faceted structure. The resulting clean faceted surface remains stable for T<600 K. For temperatures above this value, the surface irreversibly relaxes to the planar state.  相似文献

We have studied by Spot Profile Analysis Low Energy Electron Diffraction (SPA-LEED) the growth of gold particles on the N/Cu(0 0 1) self-organized surface. This template consists of nitrogen islands separated by bare Cu lines and forming a regular 2D array of period 5 nm. When Au is evaporated onto this surface, it mainly grows at the intersections between the Cu lines. The islands organization reproduces then the substrate 2D ordering. However, if the substrate temperature is too low, islands form everywhere. On the contrary, if the substrate temperature is too high, some nucleation sites are empty. By following the intensity of the diffraction satellites during the growth, we have observed that the ordering of the Au particles is optimum when the substrate temperature is between 210 and 290 K. Using both an analytical treatment based on the rate equations and kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations, we have determined the activation energy for the diffusion process and the energy of the traps.  相似文献

Adsorption of 0.5 monolayers (ML) of Sb on the Au(1 1 0) surface resulted in the formation of a c(2 × 2) surface reconstruction. Analysis of surface X-ray diffraction data by a direct method revealed the existence of an ordered substitutional surface alloy, with every other hollow site occupied by Au and Sb atoms. Quantitative conventional χ2 refinement showed a contraction of 0.12 ± 0.03 Å in the spacing of the first Au layer to the second, an expansion of 0.13 ± 0.03 Å in the second-to-third layer distance, and an inward Sb displacement (rumpling) of 0.21 ± 0.04 Å. This surface phase proved to be extremely robust, with the long-range order of this arrangement remaining up to substrate temperatures of 900 K.  相似文献

A theoretical epitaxial growth model with realistic barriers for surface diffusion is investigated by means of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to study the growth modes of metastable (3 3 1) nanofacets on Au and Pt(1 1 0) surfaces. The results show that under experimental atomic fluxes, the (3 3 1) nanofacets grow by 2D nucleation at low temperature in the submonolayer regime. A metastable growth phase diagram that can be useful to experimentalists is presented and looks similar to the one found for the stationary growth of the bcc(0 0 1) surface in the kinetic 6-vertex model.  相似文献

This article reports photoemission and STM studies for the adsorption and dissociation of water on Ce-Au(1 1 1) alloys and CeOx/Au(1 1 1) surfaces. In general, the adsorption of water at 300 K on disordered Ce-Au(1 1 1) alloys led to O-H bond breaking and the formation of Ce(OH)x species. Heating to 500-600 K induced the decomposition or disproportionation of the adsorbed OH groups, with the evolution of H2 and H2O into gas phase and the formation of Ce2O3 islands on the gold substrate. The intrinsic Ce ↔ H2O interactions were explored by depositing Ce atoms on water multilayers supported on Au(1 1 1). After adsorbing Ce on ice layers at 100 K, the admetal was oxidized immediately to yield Ce3+. Heating to room temperature produced finger-like islands of Ce(OH)x on the gold substrate. The hydroxyl groups dissociated upon additional heating to 500-600 K, leaving Ce2O3 particles over the surface. On these systems, water was not able to fully oxidize Ce into CeO2 under UHV conditions. A complete Ce2O3 → CeO2 transformation was seen upon reaction with O2. The particles of CeO2 dispersed on Au(1 1 1) did not interact with water at 300 K or higher temperatures. In this respect, they exhibited the same reactivity as does a periodic CeO2(1 1 1) surface. On the other hand, the Ce2O3/Au(1 1 1) and CeO2−x/Au(1 1 1) surfaces readily dissociated H2O at 300-500 K. These systems showed an interesting reactivity for H2O decomposition. Water decomposed into OH groups on Ce2O3/Au(1 1 1) or CeO2−x/Au(1 1 1) without completely oxidizing Ce3+ into Ce4+. Annealing over 500 K removed the hydroxyl groups leaving behind CeO2−x/Au(1 1 1) surfaces. In other words, the activity of CeOx/Au(1 1 1) for water dissociation can be easily recovered. The behavior of gold-ceria catalysts during the water-gas shift reaction is discussed in light of these results.  相似文献
