Large scale of well‐ordered macroporous π‐conjugated polymer monoliths have been successfully prepared through a new approach using micrometer‐sized naphthalene crystals as templates. The macroporous monoliths of poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and poly(p‐phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) grew along the unidirectional freezing direction inside the template naphthalene crystals which lead to the formation of controlling morphologies and homogeneous diameters. The polymer monoliths show straight and lamella macroporous structures. The diameters of pores and the thickness of pore walls can be controlled by tuning the freezing temperature.

Two novel monovinyl β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) monomers are synthesized. Their chemical compositions are characterized by means of element analysis, NMR and FT‐IR spectroscopy. The results show that the synthesis techniques used are convenient and efficient. Using N‐isopropylacrylamide as a comonomer, two novel linear copolymers can also be synthesized.

Poly(β‐hydroxyalkanoate)s (PHAs) are a class of aliphatic polyesters that can be efficiently synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of β‐lactones. The case of chiral racemic β‐substituted β‐lactones is particularly appealing since these monomers open the way to original tacticities and materials different from those biotechnologically produced. In this overview, after briefly surveying general considerations associated to the ROP of β‐lactones and metal‐based catalysts used in stereoselective ROP of racemic β‐butyrolactone, special emphasis is given to discrete rare earth catalysts that have allowed the preparation of highly syndiotactic poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate)s. Recent developments – such as preparation of stereocontrolled PHAs with pendant structural groups via (co)polymerization of functional β‐substituted β‐lactones, and highly alternating copolymers obtained by ROP of mixtures of enantiomerically pure but different monomers – are also discussed.

Films of an α‐cyclodextrin/poly(ε‐caprolactone) inclusion complex have been successfully prepared and show high transparency and heat resistance in comparison to the pure polymer film. The physical properties, such as transparency, mechanical properties, and thermal stability, of the α‐CD‐PCL‐IC films are found to depend on the α‐cyclodextrin‐to‐polymer stoichiometry.

Well‐defined amphiphilic linear‐dendritic prodrugs (MPEG‐b‐PAMAM‐DOX) are synthesized by conjugating doxorubicin (DOX), to MPEG‐b‐PAMAM through the acid‐labile hydrazone bond. The amphiphilic prodrugs form self‐assembled nanoparticles in deionized water and encapsulate the hydrophobic anticancer drug 10‐hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) with a high drug loading efficiency. Studies on drug release and cellular uptake of the co‐delivery system reveal that both drugs are released in a pH‐dependent manner and effectively taken up by MCF‐7 cells. In vitro methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assays and drug‐induced apoptosis tests demonstrate the HCPT‐loaded nanoparticles suppress cancer cell growth more efficiently than the MPEG‐b‐PAMAM‐DOX prodrugs, free HCPT, and physical mixtures of MPEG‐b‐PAMAM‐DOX and HCPT at equivalent DOX or HCPT doses.

Poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) oligomer containing one adamantyl (AD) and two β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) moieties at the chain terminals, AD‐PNIPAM‐(β‐CD)2, was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and successive click reactions. In aqueous solution, AD‐PNIPAM‐(β‐CD)2 spontaneously forms supramolecular thermoresponsive hyperbranched polymers via molecular recognition between AD and β‐CD moieties. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first report of the construction of supramolecular thermoresponsive hyperbranched polymers from well‐defined polymeric AB2 building units.

Summary: Polypeptide‐shelled poly(propylene imine) dendrimers were realized by ring‐opening polymerization of α‐amino acid N‐carboxyanhydrides, initiated by dendrimers as core molecules. Polypeptides with 2nd generation core were used as model compounds to investigate interior complexes between metal ion and surface‐modified dendrimers. Micro‐calorimetric measurements outlined the formation of approximate 1:1 complexes between CuII and polypeptide‐shelled dendrimers and the influence of polypeptide chain compositions on differential molar heats of complexation.

Summary: Amphiphilic triblock copolymers (PEOxb‐PDMSyb‐PEOx) with different block lengths were synthesized and multi‐morphological complex crew‐cut, star‐like, and short‐chain aggregates were prepared by self‐assembly of the given copolymers. The morphologies and dimensions of the aggregates can be well controlled by variation of the preparation conditions. TEM, SEM, FFR‐TEM, and LLS studies show the resulting morphologies range from LCMs, unilamellar or multilayer vesicles, LCVs, porous spheres to nanorods.

The dual self‐assembling polycondensation of p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) and p‐acetamidobenzoic acid in Therm S 800 was examined at 300 °C. Needle‐like crystals and lath‐like crystals were formed simultaneously through reaction‐induced crystallization of oligomers at a molar ratio of 30–50 mol‐% ABA in the feed. The needle‐like crystals comprised more p‐oxybenzoyl units, whereas the lath‐like ones contained higher amounts of p‐benzamide moieties.

Summary: A novel functionalised poly(1‐vinylpyrrolidin‐2‐one) (PVP) derivative, carrying a pre‐determined amount of 2‐(2‐pyridinyldithio)ethylamine moieties as side substituents, P(VP‐co‐VP‐SS‐Py), has been prepared from carboxylated VP copolymers, in turn obtained by copolymerising 1‐vinylpyrrolidin‐2‐one with 3,3‐di‐(ethoxycarbonyl)‐1‐vinylpyrrolidin‐2‐one in the presence of radical initiators. Using reaction solvents acting in the mean time as chain transfer agents could control its molecular weight. P(VP‐co‐VP‐SS‐Py) proved to be extremely reactive towards exchange reactions with molecules containing mercapto functions, including bioactive peptides. The exchange derivative with reduced glutathione, chosen as a model compound, was easily prepared.

The synthesis of cationic mono‐(6‐O‐(1‐vinylimidazolium))‐ß‐cyclodextrin with toluenesulfonate as the corresponding anion is described. Free‐radical copolymerization of the resulting host–guest complex with N‐isopropylacrylamide or N,N‐diethylacrylamide yielded copolymers showing a temperature‐controlled solubility window in water. The impact of different anionic guests and salt concentrations on solubility behavior was investigated via turbidity measurements.

Summary: A new NLO‐active lambda‐shaped main‐chain polyimide that comprises a two‐dimensional carbazole chromophore was synthesized. This polyimide exhibits high thermal and temporal stability. It can endure temperatures of up to 240 °C for a transient time and maintain a large SH signal at 100 °C for a long time because embedding the two‐dimensional chromophores into the polymer backbone effectively suppresses the randomization of the oriented dipole at high temperatures.

Summary: This contribution describes the graft polymerization of polystyrene (PS) by atom transfer radical polymerization at 50, 60, and 75 °C. Thick PS brushes were grown from initiator‐functionalized PGMA layers on silicon, and constant growth rates provide indirect evidence that the polymerizations were controlled.

Summary: Microwave‐assisted ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid using zinc oxide as a catalyst is investigated. By adding 30 wt.‐% ionic liquid, poly(ε‐caprolactone) with a weight‐average molar mass of 28 500 g · mol−1 is obtained at 85 W for 30 min. The results indicate that the polymerization could be efficiently enhanced in the presence of ionic liquids under microwave irradiation because ionic liquids can effectively absorb microwave energy.

The free volume in thin films of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamid) end‐capped with n‐butyltriocarbonate (nbc‐PNIPAM) is probed with positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). The PALS measurements are performed as function of energy to obtain depth profiles of the free volume of nbc‐PNIPAM films. The range of nbc‐PNIPAM films with thicknesses from 40 to 200 nm is focused. With decreasing film thickness the free volume increases in good agreement with an increase in the maximum swelling capability of the nbc‐PNIPAM films. Thus in thin hydrogel films the sorption and swelling behavior is governed by free volume.

A conjugated polymer containing an electron donating backbone (triphenylamine) and an electron accepting side chain (cyanoacetic acid) with conjugated thiophene units as the linkers has been synthesized. Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are fabricated utilizing this material as the dye sensitizer, resulting a typical power conversion efficiency of 3.39% under AM 1.5 G illumination, which represents the highest efficiency for polymer dye‐sensitized DSSCs reported so far. The results show the good promise of conjugated polymers as sensitizers for DSSC applications.

The effects of temperature and solvent on the β‐phase formation and energy transfer in an Ir(III) complex‐containing polyfluorene were investigated. Efficient energy transfer from polyfluorenes host to Ir complexes guest can be realized at low temperature. The formation of β‐phase was observed both in THF solution at low temperature and as suspended nano‐particles at room temperature. In addition, phosphorescent polymer nanoparticles were prepared successfully and exhibited efficient phosphorescent emission.

The catalytic properties of bis(phenoxy‐imine) Zr and Hf complexes incorporating perfluorophenyl groups with methylaluminoxane were investigated. The fluorinated complexes produced far higher‐molecular‐weight polyethylenes and ethylene/propylene copolymers with increased activities compared with the non‐fluorinated congeners. Moreover, the fluorinated complexes displayed a higher incorporation ability for propylene.
